The commercials were on carts like these and they used the Gates carousels. They were a maintenance headache for sure. When the engineer took down the main transmitter for maintenance he also had to do a lot of head and capstan cleaning. They used a non audible tone to control everything and sometimes there would be a musical note that would last long enough to fire the next sequence leading to two sound tracks at the same time. Even today with the compute control, I hear that happen. It was mesmerizing to watch that thing in action. Two complete systems, one for operation and one for back up. Many of us who have been involved online with these things (AM-specific) for, say - over a decade now, have seen this approach before. We've seen the results, how pointless it is, and how the 'new list' still needs to copy the old list when they have a real question. We don't understand why anyone would bother with such an exercise in futility, since together we are strongest. Not that it isn't your God-given right to do so, because we support freedom too. As Jim pointed out, this is nothing new. Consider it our good-natured way of pointing it out. BTW - I just posted some grainy shots of my BC transmitter over on 'fone, having finally gotten it powered up a few months back. These two resources are, to me, the ideal: the email list for a less-structured QSO type of format, often with a rapid turnaround on questions (many folks tend to be online for email, not logged into the site), and the AMfone site for the more granular sections, ability to post and view photos, schematics, and so on as well as the wealth of information covered by both. Almost like having a book to refer to when you can't ask a question. Even the little bit over overlap through duplication is handy, it's helped me see things in once place I had missed in the other. I can never thank Brian and Gary enough for putting this all together years ago from their initial individual efforts. Hope that adds some clarity, Mark. Re: [AMRadio] open wire line
Regarding home made spacers. If you run the feed wire on the outside of the spacer and the tie wire through the hole it will be be much easier to replace a damaged spacer. To keep the spreader in place, drill holes in the strips then run the wire through the holes then cut short pieces of wire and wrap one side of the spreader then across it to the other side and wrap, then solder. Here's another idea, FWIW. W7FG makes dipoles out of 16 ga. stranded wire and PVC pipe insulators and mine seems to be holding up well after a couple of years. Gary's got some pretty good pictures here: http://www.w7fg.net/ladder/ladder.htmlHe makes a V-shaped entrance to a round hole through the pipe that secures the wire. The wire snaps-in place, and stays put under all weather conditions, yet can be moved or adjusted as needed. 73 Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body. __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

I had juat learned the code and really wasn;t solid at 5WPM, but my dad was going to Atlanta on business and I asked if I could go along and take the test. I lived in Asheville, NC at that time and Atlanta was the nearest examining point unless one wanted to go to a quarterly examing point, the closest being Knoxville, TN. I had just missed one there. In any event, I went into the exam room and they started sending code and I started copying. I was doing really well until I made a fatal mistake. I looked up and there, glaring at me through coke bottle thick glasses was the examinar. He was about 5 feet tall and had a moustache and of course those glasses! I froze solid and could not copy another letter. I"ll never forget those words he said after he checked my paper. "Come back and see me in 30 days!" I did and the next time I passed with flying colors, copying all 5 minutes solid without a single miss. [AMRadio] 820D-1 Correction
1969 fellows...sorry about typo Bob
[AMRadio] FS Collins 820D-1, KW AM Xmtr
Due to the time and space involved, I have decide not to convert this beautiful transmitter. It is an original owner unit built by Collins in 1869 in 1969. All original documentation from the factory and installation is included. Very large 8 1/2 X 11 notebook with all pages in plastic protectors. The Collins 820D-1 uses a pair of 5-500's modulated by a pair of the same. The transmitter is solid state up to the final and modulators. Most users converted the transmitter to use 4-400's by simply changing the filament transformers. I have the new transformer designed for this transmitter. The transmitter comes with a remote control panel for operation from the operators position. The transmitter is designed to be placed flush against a wall. Everything is serviced from the front. It is 23 inches deep, 41 inches wide and 69 inches tall. Complete manual with very large extra schmatics. A spare audio driver card and extra exciter unit is included. All iron is original and has been removed and taged for easy handling. The transmitter is located near Tallahassee, Fl just off I-10. The transmitter can be moved in a standard size pickup. Help will be provided for loading. The transmitter can be delivered within a 200-300 mile area. Priced at $1200.00 and I will consider a trade or partial trade.
