Hey all thanks for the greetings.

Ken, I'm just using a home stereo system (CD player, tape deck, etc)

RE: [AMRadio] RCA BTA-1R1

2006-04-21 Thread esieb
What were the major problems/issues that you delt with in getting the rig on
160? I have one of those (actually a BTA1R3) and it's "son" a BTA1S. The
BTA1S is a bit smaller, and resides in an actual 6' 7" rack; exact same rig,
though.

RE: [AMRadio] D104 mic element testing

2006-04-18 Thread esieb
It's a piezo element, so don't put any voltage on it, i.e. from a VOM.
Best tested with a scope or amplifier. I personally use a Rad Shack
self-contained battery run amp to test audio devices.

OK, how do you test a D104 mic element to see if is bad?

Unfortunately (or apparently so) the prescribed bandwidth would be overly
restrictive to AM if strictly enforced. On the lower HF bands, the only
mode definition is 6 kHz maximum, with no subbands. Period.

But I have never heard of a Canadian AM'er being cited for a signal of
excessive bandwidth from his otherwise properly operated transmitter.

And you never will, Don. Our regulators aren't too concerned about any
excessively wide AM'ers; there are so few of us. A 6khz BW requires a 3 khz
max response in the audio chain. Most guys up here are about 4 khz
response. So long as we don't bother anyone. the IC don't care, so long as
we employ proper engineering standards, and don't splatter. Personally,
when required, I use a Bailey Engineering 3.5 kc brick wall filter.

Indeed! I was a mere SWL in 1966, when I heard Fred talking to Bill, W3DUQ
and others (WA1EKV, today K1KW). He ran "Upside-down-tube-modulation" which
was a form of tunable Doherty modulation. He ran 20KW of audio, on a 1 KW
carrier! Talk about enhanced DSB! Anyway, he was loud at my QTH. I have
some correspondence between him and Hoisy Hoisington, W4CJL. If I have time
I may put up that correspondence on my web-space.

y'all got to remember that when ten is open, 5 watts can work the world.

About five years ago, or so, I worked a VK on 28.4 Mhz with a QRP rig
running about 7W PEP, from my mobile (running a Larson NMO-34 with 60"
whip). That little rig is a portable. handie-talkie-style rig, that runs
AM, FM, and SSB, and nominally operates the entire 10M band.It tunes
similarly to a 2510. There is a mod to put it on CB (actually 26 - 30
Mhz), but who cares about that. It cost me $149.95 (US) and was a
bargain.

RE: [AMRadio] need help

2005-10-19 Thread esieb
I'd have used an MFJ 259B to actually measure the input Z. Alternatively,
you can always use a small tuner to "tune" the input. I do that anyway
with my Drake L4B, (use a small MFJ mobile tuner with meter).

4-400's, eh? Nice amp! If your plate voltage is high enough, you ought to
get serious power out of that baby!

From: Edward B Richards <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

I want to drive a linear amplifier with a rice box that requires a 50 ohm
load.
The linear amp uses an input to a 170 ohm, 80 watt swamping resistor to
ground, then

through a .001 mfd capacitor, then through a VHF parasitic suppressor
consisting of 4 turns of wire around a 47 ohm resistor, to the grids of
a pair of parallel connected 4-400A tubes.

What I need to know is the impedance of the input. Is it close to 50 ohms
or do I need to use a matching network between the rice box and the
linear amplifier.
