Re: [AMRadio] Ultrasonic feedback
John: If you can hear the squeal, it is not ultrasonic. That would be rare I think. Some tubes and their wiring have been known to oscillate at RF frequencies which may have several carriers. The difference between these carriers may land in the audio frequency spectrum and be amplified by the modulator circuitry. Putting ferrite beads or parasitic chokes in the grids and plates of the tubes will not harm anything and may cure the problem. I have experienced this before. Loose nuts and bolts on the audio transformers or loose laminations are a more likely cause of accoustical feedback. Bad inter-stage bypass capacitors allowing electrical feedback between stages is the first place I would check. (B+ by-pass caps near the preamps/drivers). Good Luck. Anyone who knows Leo Meyerson knows what a gentleman he is and if there had been some concern over the issues mentioned at the time of manufacture of the WRL/Galaxy, they would have been addressed at that time. After all, should anyone be injured by a bad design, that would probably spell the end of the products and no one wanted either of those to happen. Those radios were a product of their times. Re: [AMRadio] Testing a TR Switch
Hello Mike: If your Wattmeter is sensitive enough to show 100mW to 1 Watt and you applied say 100 Watts to the switch and the Wattmeter showed less than 100 mW, I would think that would work to test the BW switch for use with tube type equipment. For a sensitive solid state receiver, I would hope the feedthru would be less than 10 mW. You would need two 50 Ohm loads (or a resonant antenna for the transmitter). The above is exactly how I test my BW/Johnson switch's. Just my opinion. Also, dont forget to connect your Low Pass Filter to the antenna connector of the switch. The switch has been known to produce harmonics. Re: [AMRadio] Re: ribbon cable
Use them as Faraday shields between low Z links. Strip the ends of all wires on one end, tie all of the stripped ends together by placing one wire across all stripped ends and solder them together. Ground the ends that are soldered together, use a short ground wire. ( do not use between links with HV on the links-most PVC wont stand much voltage). Cut the ribbon to size with sharp sizzor's, leave the insulation intact on the non stripped end. Helps prevent top side capacity coupling. Probably not a new idea but makes fabricating the shield in receivers easy. 73, Charlie, K0NG __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] Life in the mid to late '30s
JT: I have no personal experience in 1930's but, I have read each page of my QST mags over and over. I wanted to put together a 1950 style station and I put together lists of common station equipment from the era and generally concluded that there was no one most common pair that stood out. If I added up each type of transmitter and each type of receiver (not necessarily used together) that told me the most popular transmitter and receiver. For the most part (unless you were well heeled) receivers were hand me downs from unknown sources and were almost always older than a companion commercial transmitter. Homebrew transmitters were in the 60-70 % area. My conclusion was to pick whatever you could find from the era and put it together, homebrew or commercial, depending upon your performance expectations. Since my family was not well heeled,I choose low end equipment. I suggest you spend some time with old QST or other books, then make a decision. QST is available on CD from ARRL. Have fun. RE: [AMRadio] Carrier Current Transmission (was WestinghouseTest Meter Unit Type TCT)
Greetings all: I have spent considerable time operating carrier current of various kinds over the years. I studied all of the old QST articles about the subject and duplicated quite a few of the subjects. Most of them were for AM Phone operation. (there was a lot of incidental FM also and FM performed better than AM in the presence of noise, which there was always on the power lines. Carrier current on rails sometimes surprised me when I heard signals other than my buddies on the far end. I used the old Virginian Railroad rails and the tracks were alive with AC and its harmonics. The Virginian ran electric, steam and diesel, all at the same time (1955). Carrier current on telephone lines was also interesting as many lines already had carrier current on the lines so the company could double up on the use of lines et. WE used carrier current at about 560 KHZ on the AC Lines for entertainment at Geiger Field, WN. Callsign was KGF. The FCC was aware of our operation and even issued a License. The transmitter was a brand new AN/ARC-5, real Hi Fi. My main interest in carrier current may be traced to a class I took in Vocational High School (blue collar traing)where we learned the theory and operation of a GE FM transmitter/receiver which used the tracks in a coal mine to communicate instructions. They worked great. I cant remember the rack mounted combiner/switch that was installed between 2 receivers but I do remember it functioned on AVC levels. As I recall, most of the mod-kits were put up by Northern Radio. Re: [AMRadio] low band am
Hi Scott: I for one welcome low power AM ops. We need more of them so we can enjoy AM on a city size lot without being a superpower station. If you have the 6 KHz AM filter with your rig, you should not get a lot of white noise. There are of course better sounding rigs than a 120S but not too many more selective. I have found a low 25 to 50 ft center inverted vee to match low power AM quite well. You probably wont work the moon with such a setup but if you get off the beaten path you can have some fun. 73 good luck. Steve: My TBS-50 has a small link coil mounted near the 807 plate output that screws to two standoffs. The link is connected to an RCA jack where the whip plugged in. This is reflected in the schematic as I recall. I measured about a half watt output at the jack (on 144.400). I ran that output thru a Motorola cavity before connecting to my 13 L beam. Re: [AMRadio] advice on el cheapo elecret mics
Vince: If your electret contains the FET follower inside, the typical source impedence of the FET is about 1.5K to 3.0K Ohms. I usually AC couple the output (with say a 1 uF cap observe polarity carefully) to a 5 to 10K load. Usually anything from a 1.5 V battery to a 6 V battery or well filtered supply will work (I usually put a few K Ohms in series with the supply. If your supply lines are long, it is best to put a 1 uF cap and a .01 uF cap across the electret supply input and ground. They do love to hum so shield well. Re: [AMRadio] Heath tubes
Alan: I have a friend whose HR-10B does the same thing. A new tube may not fix the problem. We have speculated that the voltage regulator for the converter tube might not be stable enough or changeing the gain control setting may cause the load to the HF oscillator to shift which would indicate the need for a buffer between oscillator and mixer. Re: [AMRadio] TS430 as VFO
The transverter socket has nothing to do with the output relay switching. There is another socket for external switching (such as a linear) but be careful if you have 120 VAC relays, they should be keyed with another relay in between the two connections. On second thought, maybe the attenuator is a better idea, that way you dont have to mess with the transverter socket. Wish I was there to help, it would be easier. Re: [AMRadio] TS430 as VFO
Hello Jack: My TS-430 works OK as a VFO. You should make a 5 to 10 Watt attenuator to insure that the output is terminated correctly. A better way is to use the Transverter jack (socket) on the back of the 430. The output level is only 50 mW and is 50 Ohms. The transverter output may not drive your transmitter without using say a 1:9 autotransformer or L network between the transverter out and the Tx input. Older tube rigs have Hi Z crystal input around 47 K or so and you need to match that somehow. At least with the attenuator method you will have no trouble getting the required 5-7 V RMS for the transmitter input. Good luck and be sure you are in CW mode (no Mics!!) 73, Charlie, K0NG __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net

Quoting Jim Candela [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Bob Wrote: Of course I have not pursued a whip installation. It would seem to be a useless endeavor as the 160, 80, 40, and 20 meter bands are normally of horizontal polarization. I see no logic in operating in cross polarization, and making communications more difficult than necessary. Hi Bob, I enjoyed your BC-610 thread. It makes me wish I had obtained one back when I had several chances. I recall a story from Dave, W6PSS when he was moving his three 610's in a trailer, and was involved in a bad traffic accident. He was OK, but the 610's did not fare well. Now about that polarization issue you mentioned. I had long in depth conversations with the late Ozona Bob, W5PYT concerning this. What I recall is that when receiving skip at HF, the polarization is constantly changing, and the QSB you experience is in part due to that. The other part is vector addition subtraction from picking up the same signal from different paths, phase, and time delay. Bob figured that if he transmitted circular polarization this would in effect reduce QSB at the receiving end. I recall he had huge diagonally mounted turnstile dipoles mounted nearly a football field high (the top). At my QTH (Austin), he was always on the S-meter peg, and NO QSB. That was a distance of 250 miles, day and night. I myself would be hesitant to put up a 80 meter vertical because my buddies close in within Texas would have trouble hearing me if they were beyond groundwave distance, and before the first hop distance. Now how does KC9VF get out so well? Doesn't he have a vertical dipole on 80 meters? For skip reception, it seems that the transmitted polarization, isn't a big issue, but more of a angle of radiation issue. Yeah, like dont assume the current meter is correct either !! Like Dale sez, dont trust nuthin. DE K0NG .. Quoting Radio Station KW1I [EMAIL PROTECTED]: What load are you using? Are you sure it is in the range that the DX60 will load into? Have you checked the screen voltage? Has the DX-60 ever worked since it was built? RE: [AMRadio] The zeal to eliminate AM mode on the amateur bands.
Good one Dave ! I like some of the wideband sound but without a compandor or a carrier, it just aint the same nor will it ever be AM. AM is AM. 73 DE Charlie, K0NG. Quoting Dave Harmon [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Probably because they want more spectrum to run their wideband SSB rigs that they think sounds as good as AM. Mark: Yet another opinion... Some of these AM haters are very much like the big car drivers in high school who would haul around a gaggle of guys who would laugh at a practical good mileage car and make fun of the operator. Same mentalitydumb and dummmber. (no.. I couldnt afford a car). Also, I think some of the folks are just plain jelous (sp), They cant build AM or maintain or operate it but they shore can buy leenears. Re: [AMRadio] Power ratings
Your statement sounds pretty close to me. For instance, I set my TS-430S carrier level for about 1/3 of full carrier (Ip)capability, then adjust the mic gain control until it sounds OK on my monitor or to a live contact. Do not use a compressor at all. IMHO. Good luck. 73 K0NG . Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I thought I understood these things, But I have confused me little self. I need some clear thinking here.
