Re: [AMRadio] $80,000 stereo amplifiers
Barrie, As a bit of an audio nut myself I have thought about several easy ways to build a BIG TUBE amp up. While the more interesting and exotic tubes would be fun, you are right in the difficulty of obtaining output iron reasonable. But, there are several US transformer custom shops who will build to spec using normal materials at probably the same cost of an equivalent Mod transformer. After all, the only difference really, is the output imp. Two choices, SE which requires unballanced DC current in the primary, or PP which doesn't. An option is to use tubes that will give the desired power while keeping with a plate voltage below 1kv. Most of the 120 + watt class of audio amps run 700+ plate @ 400+ ma thru the output so relatively normal transformers are available from Hammond, ETC. I am personally thinking of putting up a pair of 813s in triode connection to a 120 watt Dynaco output. Have to do the matching math yet but there are other tubes in that 800 series that will work. Heck, Altec had one using 811s or 812s. Really no more difficult to build than a Mod deck. Re: [AMRadio] $80,000 stereo amplifiers
Would those be the ones that have tubes with gold-plated pins? I always thought it was funny that Radio Shack sold tubes with gold plated pins. Almost no one else felt there was a need to gold plate them. It might have helped a little bit in a very few cases. __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Re: [AMRadio] $80,000 stereo amplifiers
All Crazy prices aside - you must admit these amps are sure wonderful on the eyes ;) I still plan on building my own stereo amp with a couple of Sventlana 811-10 tubes. It will cost me 1/1000th the cost of that 304TL unit, but hopefully provide as nice a visual show. Heck that's why we like the big BC transmitters with the windows. Re: [AMRadio] $80,000 stereo amplifiers
Don: I've had a desire to build an audio amp using an old Eimac tube, the 100TL, behind a window, would be the best looking. I'm an audio nut, so I've mentioned this idea on a couple of audio forums, but the hand-wound transformers, using pure silver wire, wound at midnight, while facing exactly north, in the Bavarian forest, kind of scared me away. I know there would be problems using a high-voltage, low-current tube such as the 100TL, but I'd like to try it anyway. Any suggestions from the group? 73, Barrie, W7ALW All Crazy prices aside - you must admit these amps are sure wonderful on the eyes ;) I still plan on building my own stereo amp with a couple of Sventlana 811-10 tubes.
