Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I am purposely sending this to the list so others see how I feel about the situation. I am one of the sellers that use this reflector. About once a month I post an ad for tubes or parts or equipment. I try to comply with the rules but being human and old, I forget because this reflector is different from the others I subscribe to. The other reflectors go only to the person posting the message when you hit reply . You have to hit reply all to post it to the reflector. Only this reflector does it go to the list when you hit reply. It is a nuisance and pain in the a-- to have to cut and paste when a simple hit of reply should accomplish what you want. I will be happy to unsubscribe if you so indicate. There are a lot more reflectors to sell on, not to mention Ebay. Many of the folks here have gotten used to the current set up, but it will still happen over time as new folks come to the list used to the more standard way. Well, not a good day for me, I guess Some of you should remember when we DID change the config of the list where a simple reply (not reply all) would go to the sender and NOT the list. Everyone complained for about a week or more about that, so I put it back the way it was. That was about 2 years or more ago. What I can do folks??? I make it one way and people complain, I make it another way, and I still get it. How hard is it for someone to simply embed their email address in their for sale ads so someone can just click on it to buy and item ??? My email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], and that took me less than 5 seconds to type in this posting.. Go figure... That's all we/I ask.. I do the best I can with ALL of this. I get complaints in personal email about all the excessive quoting in replies, the buyers saying I'll take this or that, and a lot of other crap. I don't get paid for any of this, and I try to appease all the best I can. I guess the question now is who is it I need to appease. 10 years with this has maybe taken my toll, so if any of you think or want to deal with what I do on a nearly daily basis, let me know. 73 Brian / wa5am __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

If you've just cleared out a bunch of email from other lists or groups and then respond to something here, it's an easy mistake to make. I still screw up now and then, but have gotten better at it over the years. The approach here is to force a reply to the entire list assuming that everyone should see it, and with that comes the inevitable fact that it's gonna force a number of replies here that you don't want to see or even have no relevance. Still, it has to be pretty frustrating to have just put out recent announcements about this (along with regular reminders) only to have it happen again, and again. It's been this way as long as I can remember, back into the 90s. We have 'quiet' spells, then it seems like a torrent of replies to the list that were meant to be private. I'm wondering how many are new or infrequent posters? If I lived closer Brian, I'd come over for a visit to do the math with you, equipped with appropriate arithmetic-enhancing beverage. Brian, Personally, I think you're doing a hell of a good job. To have organization and any degree of sanity you must have rules and they must be followed. You can't please everyone and I think you have found a happy median that is not too difficult to follow. Of course, there will always be the occasional slip, I've sure made my share. RE: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I normally don't like to get involved in this kind of thing but will put in my 2 cents this time. I have to agree that it would be much simpler to have the reflector set up with the reply to and reply to all to work like most all other reflectors are set up. That, in my opinion, would solve most of the problems. I think this was debated long ago and it was decided that both replies should go to the reflector so that the list doesn't miss anything. Well this is what happens. Most people try to do the right thing, but don't realize at the time what will happen. I think the warnings about don't reply to ads on the list about equal the number of violations. So that doesn't save much archive space either. Concerning extra stuff getting on the list with these replies, It seems to me that there is much more junk on the list about bashing the ARRL or something else that seems to go on and on, compared to a few replies to for sale items. Of course maybe that is what this list is destined for rather than good AM discussions. I about wear out the delete key with this junk and have come close to unsubscribing from the list many times. The for sale replies are small compared to the rest of the junk posts. 73 Gary K4FMX -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:amradio- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Edward B Richards Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 10:49 AM To: amradio@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST} I am purposely sending this to the list so others see how I feel about the situation. Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
The choice to make the default reply to the AMRadio mailing list the list itself was the right way to go. It maximizes responses to the whole list, rather than to individuals, and encourages discussion. Other mailing lists which have other goals might chose to do it the other way. I certainly hope we don't modify the list configuration (which impacts everyone) for the sake of a few people who can't operate their email programs. Various systems, and various senders of email, define the Reply-to address in different ways. It is always up to *you* to make sure your message is going to the right place. Double-checking to whom your email is addressed is an important part of using email! To much trouble to cut and paste an address or two? Baloney. Inconvinient to glance up at the TO addresses before you hit send? Baloney. If either of those are too much trouble, don't try running vintage gear that you have to manually tune up. It'll be too much trouble. So be it if some people slip and the list get's the response to a for sale post; kaka happens. If the for sale posts are nixed, then the majority will pay for the crimes of the few. Brian, make a decision and stick with it -- you're doing a great job. Expect people to slip up from time to time. Ban those that flaunt the list's rules on a consistent basis. I don't complain about you sending an hole e-mail to say the word THANKS. if people were perfect the world would be boring. To make one person happy everybody else needs to suffer. Re: [AMRadio] {ADMIN NOTICE TO SELLERS AND BUYERS ON THIS LIST}
I've never really seen this as a problem. It doesn't bother me in the least that some replies to ads are posted to the whole group. Since that is default reply to method, it's going to happen. I have to sort through about 800 emails a day, so a few more, one way or the other, just doesn't matter. If you're going to make a policy, then put the responsibility on the sellers to post adequate notice about replying off-reflector. If one of them won't follow the rules, then ban them from selling on the reflector. Don't penalize everyone for the transgressions of a few. As far as buyer replies go, just assume that some won't read every word in the ad, some will forget by the time they hit send, and some will just hit send to fast. No big deal. This thread has already generated more traffic than ad responses in recent history. Or maybe I just noticed them more because of the yelling (capital letters) in the subject line. 73, Clay W7CE __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Rick wrote: Brian, Personally, I think you're doing a hell of a good job. To have organization and any degree of sanity you must have rules and they must be followed. You can't please everyone and I think you have found a happy median that is not too difficult to follow. Of course, there will always be the occasional slip, I've sure made my share. I say, keep up the good work and we should all try a little harder to accommodate the rules of the reflector. If I can interject my 2 millicents in here... Those rules that apply to this reflector, show as links in every message. Unfortunately, far too often, those said message footers are reproduced [multiple times] in non-trimmed and complete message quoting replies. Links to those rules are great, but I get the feeling that a lot of people don't click on them, because 'they' (mostly readers, and not posters) because they would rather get to the 'meat' they came to the site for. With that in mind, posting said rules here, -on-the-list-, probably once a month, would go a long way to dispelling any questions and/or translations of said rules. -- 73 = Best Regards, -Geoff/W5OMR (home again) __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
