Well, everyone told me that they wanted 3675, 3685 and 3735 kHz
for AM operating frequencies, so those are what I have made up.

If there is any demand for 3710 and 3725 I suppose I could make
some of those too, but so far there is no interest.

73 - Brian, AF4K

It's 3725. I hear them up here in Wisconsin quite a bit. Some of us have
been hanging out on 3710 too.

During the 'Band Warming Party back on the 15th of December, of last
year (when we were able to -use- the expanded frequencies) a lot of us
down here in the Texas area set up camp on 3.650Mc. I -think- we would
still be there today, were it not for the fact that several of the group
are only General or Advanced class license holders. I can not imagine,
for the life of me, why they don't go to the local VEC and take the

2007-09-12 Thread Ellen Rugowski
Hi Jim,

It's kind of hard to do, with me living in an apartment. I will check my
antenna connection for weathering though. Basically, I'm using the rain gutter
(it's 125-150 feet long, and 3 stories up, facing east west). On 20 above
it performs pretty well (one of the reasons why I've been one of the posters on
AM Fone for working 6 10m AM). On 40 lower - well it depends upon condx.
I've been thinking off and on about getting or building an amp (but if I build
one, I'd need a ready made chassis, I don't have the tools or the place to be
working with metal), so I can make up a bit, for my antenna deficit. But, I
have concerns about amp usage, earning me the Worked All Neighbors award for
my apartment building.

We don't really seem to have much of a 'problem' here, in that regard.
I guess because we're more 's p r e a d - o u t' here in the Southland,
as opposed to everyone being 'allbuncheduptogether' in the north east.
There doesn't seem to be -that- many hams that densely populate the
so-called 'Window' around here. But, I -have- driven in the North East,
and even worked some folks while mobile (Don/K4KYV noteably) while I was
traipsing across Canada, and got a chance to listen to 3.870 ~ 3.890...
back when K1MAN still had a 'legal' license, and was doing his broadcast
thing. I can certainly see why the term 'ghetto' was coined, to
describe 3.870 ~ 3.890Mc.

I'm just glad we don't have that same problem here. The northern Texas,
Oklahoma, Arkansas folk, for the most part, stay up on 3.890... South
Texans hang out on 3.880 and we all seem to get along. The
Southeasterners (that are on AM) tend to gather around 3.885, and those
poor folks in Colorado operate wherever they can. I can't hear 'em in
South Texas (at this time) but I'm sure it won't be long before KD0PD
and the rest of 'em come rolling in again into Texas in the early
morning hours, when winter-time conditions move this far south.

If you are having troubles with a Scout then a 200 watt amp won't do
much more than widen the circle a bit. I say go for it and deal with
the troubles as they occur.

As for an amp, look for a Heath SB 200. Runs real well at the 150 watt
level and is Class B. They can be had for reasonable bucks and there is
no issue of having to find a chassis, case and all the parts.

Re: [AMRadio] Frequency Question

2007-09-12 Thread Larry WA9VRH

Hi Ellen,

Guess I would think a screwdriver on the roof would be un-noticeable to most
but then your landlord has to deal with all the people. Tough spot you are
in. I remember when I bought my first house in Peoria. I put up my 40 foot
self supporting tower and didn't put antenna's on it. Had two people
complain that I was messing up their TV reception. I asked them to come to
the back yard and see this was only a tower.

Then three weeks later I put the TA-33, 5 element 6m beam and a 2 meter
vertical on top. The feed lines were tucked up under the deck and never got
close to the inside of the house. Again a couple of people complained about
my station interfering with their TV. Once again I invited them to the back
yard to see the cables were not inside the house and there we no connectors
on them.

A few weeks later I ran the cables in the house and put connectors on and
operated for probably 16 years before we moved with no complaints. We moved
to the country and when I put up my new 55 foot crank up tower I did the
exact same process. 15 years later I still have not had a complaint except
from my wife when I wipe out the satellite TV. :) Good luck on your
antenna project.

Hi Ellen,

I think I saw a mention you were on the third floor of your apartment
complex. Is that the top floor? Reason I ask is maybe you should think of
using a screwdriver antenna mounted on the roof. I have had excellent
performance using a screwdriver form my Jeep. Just a thought.

 Hi Jim,

So far no troubles. Besides, other than my landlady, nobody else knows
 I'm
operating a ham station (I don't want to deal with the nonsense I dealt
 with
at the University of Wisconsin in the 80s, when the Cryogenics lab

blamed

 us
[W9YT- the ham club station] for every little glitch in their

electronics

sensors [even when we weren't on the air they just knew it was us
 causing
the problems]). So, I operate stealth.

An SB-200 for some oomph - hmmm that's a good idea. I wish I'd thought
about that. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for one as a just in case I
 need
to use it, in the ususal places (swapfests, ePay, etc.). As of now

it'll

be a work in progress (I hit a major cycle of bills, and money is tight

at

 the moment).

 Ellen - AF9J

Well Ellen, I have had that award for many years, back in the early
 70s

it was. Most were nice about it and we cleared the problems. Others
were not so nice and I ignored them as much as possible.

If you are having troubles with a Scout then a 200 watt amp won't do
much more than widen the circle a bit. I say go for it and deal with
 the troubles as they occur.

As for an amp, look for a Heath SB 200. Runs real well at the 150
 watt

level and is Class B. They can be had for reasonable bucks and there

is

no issue of having to find a chassis, case and all the parts.

 Jim/W5JO

  Hi Jim,

It's kind of hard to do, with me living in an apartment.

But, I have concerns about amp usage, earning me the Worked All
Neighbors award for my apartment building.

   Ellen - AF9J

Re: [AMRadio] Frequency Question

2007-09-11 Thread Mike Duke, K5XU
There is a group in Louisiana that meets on 3663 several times a week.

I sometimes hear them finishing up just as I get in from work. They are
generally done by 5 or shortly after. I think they also meet some during the
morning, but I'm not sure when. Some days they are on ssb.

I also hear Louie out of Arkansas, along with some of the same Louisiana
bunch on 7160 around mid afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, but not every
week.

When the 75 meter phone band first expanded, I heard some activity on 3685,
3710, and 3730. However, I have been battling a very noisy power pole
lightning arrester since April, so I really can't address whose where down
there right now.

Hopefully Entergy will make good on their promise to replace the defective
unit soon, and I'll be able to hear beyond my back fence again in time for
the fall season.

Paul/VJB and others have claimed that there's a 'gathering point'
on/about 3.725, but I've yet to hear anyone down there. (and I've
listened, looking for -other- places, m'self)

If I remember, that is the Canadian gathering frequency. It might be
difficult to hear some of the guys until winter gets here.

Re: [AMRadio] Frequency Question

2007-09-11 Thread Bry Carling
A bunch of people agreed to try AM on 3675, 3685 and 3735 kHz.
So I built up a number of crystals for those three spots.

After an initial burst of interst and several folks getting them,
I have not hear much lately. So it was a bit of a bust so far.
You can count on finding at least a few AMers on those
three frequencies though...

I continue to have these other crystals available too:
3615, 3625, 3645, 3655, 3675, 3685 kHz
3686, 3700, 3702, 3703, 3704, 3705, 3716, 3721,
3735, 3739, 3746, 3800, 3805 kHz and a number of others
just above 3800 kHz
