Same here. I turned 65 my last, and I am now in my 49th year as a
licensed

 category, though.

Ashtabula Bill got a chuckle about a decade ago when I told him about a
couple of slopbuckets I overheard in conversation and one of them remarked
Ashtabula Bill hasn't died yet?. Looks like they are still having a
long

I am curious about something in the record keeping of the FAA. I
started out in 1958 or maybe 59 as WA6LGT then changed my call to
WA5HLE sometime around 1960-61 when I moved to Texas, at that time it
was required that you change your call if you moved. Then a few years
ago to W5JAI when I became Extra but the records do not show the
WA6LGT portion of my ham career. Maybe it was because I was in the
military in Alaska when I got the license???

2007-11-22 Thread Bob Macklin
When the FCC computerized they did not copy the old paper records to the
computer. They put them all in a warehouse. I sent a request to find my
original 1957 ticket. They told me it would take 3 months to find it and the
wanted to charge me a bunch of money to search the records. They found the
ticket I had in 1967 by looking in an old CallBook! LOL!

In the mis 70's I worked on a system for the Army and Air Force to copy all
the old paper records to microfilm. That's as close as the became to being
computerized.

46 here. I'll be 47 next year. :D

Most of the AMers I know are in the 40s-50s category, with older and
younger bookends.

Methinks they have a bit of a wait ahead. AMers tend to be more active
and will likely outlive many of them.

Im another of the old farts. Will be 67 on 12/13 and got my Novice 11/55.
However Ive also pushed the technology envelope having been on SSB (as well
as CW/AM) as far back as 58. And been part of the first ever ham EME team

I got into AM again in the 1980-85 era with a 4-1000A and sold everything
only to get interested again recently. This time Im concentrating on the
30's and 40's.

I have modern gear for DX chasing right up to microwave, lots of homebrew
for 6M and above. Even a Cleg Zeus Interceptor. Also a vintage SX-115,
HT-32A, NCL-2000 for when the spirit moves me for some mini contest.

Well, I don't *quite* fit that profile. I'll make the 49 year mark, on
the 2nd of December. However, I've been around radio all my life. I
remember the days when rigs such as the Benton Harbor Kilowatt (DX-100),
a TC-7 (I think it was some sort of Collins rig) and a BC-610 were
around here at various stages of my life, growing up.

I didn't get my first ticket until Feb of 1984. Feb of 2008 will start
my 24th year as a licensed ham.

I don't know why I waited so long to get a license. I learned the code
back when I was 8 years old, as a cub-scout. Dad and I built an AM
receiver out of a paper towel tube with copper wire wrapped around it, a
long metal bar to tune across the coil, a (new at the time) galena diode
and a pair of old cans, made out of hard plastic that hurt my ears to
put 'em on. The whole thing was built on a couple of 1x6's, about 12
long. I couldn't get enough of WOAI from a radio set that didn't need
external power (batteries or AC) to operate, now matter HOW much those
ol' hard-plastic 'cans' hurt my ears!

I've been operating AM on the 250TH final since 1986, thanks to
John/W5MEU, Dan/W5BU (both SK) and John/WA5BXO.
Before the big-rig, there was a Ranger and an SX-28 and first off, on AM
was a loaner Swan 350C with some mighty weak sweep-tubes.

My novice rig was a hand-me-down from Dad.. National NCX-3. I coupled
that with the Heathkit Cheyenne MR-1 as an external receiver because the
NCX-3 didn't have a CW 'offset'. Tuning in a station at around the
800cycle area meant that I was zero-beat with the sender. A T/R relay
helped out tremendously.

Ahh.. the good ol' days
(I can hear the ol' pharts now; whipper snapper)
LOL

At least the tradition lives!

Well, I'm not quite as old as some of you old timer jaspers, but I'm
closing on 50 very soon. I was however a late child in my family.
Dad was a WWII vet born in 1917, and both my siblings were much older

Some of my best ham friends are much older than I am, as I seem to
relate to them a lot better, however the downside of that is that many
of them have become silent keys, and losing a friend is not a good
thing, old or not.

Down this way, there are still a couple of AM'ers that come to mind
that are up there in age; Jim/K5BAI who is near 80, and just put a
Gates BC-1H on the air, and Otis/K5SWK who is in his 80's. I have not
heard Otis on the of late however. Jim, who we call the old dawg,
is on daily. The old dawg can probably outrun me when we go to
hamfests as we look for goodies. I never can keep up with him!

Don't let W5JO fool you, as I think he is near 100 last I heard ;)

73 Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Brian / wa5am

RE: [AMRadio] Old-Timer AMers?

I guess I'm one of the younger Old Buzzards. I'm 56, and been licensed
since 1969. Been on AM since I got licensed. Oh, sure I operate
slaw-bukitt, but if I'm on 80 or 40, AM it is, (generally).

This anti-AM attitude is a hold over from CB, where sidebanders disdain AM.
If they're complaining about AM'ers, or insulting them, then you know where
they've come from.

I guess I'm on the bookend only being 38 and getting my ticket in 1984. :)

Most of the AMers I know are in the 40s-50s category, with older and
younger bookends.

Methinks they have a bit of a wait ahead. AMers tend to be more active
and will likely outlive many of them.

Which is also the age group that has a lot of discretionary purchasing
potential, something the League is quite aware of. 20 and 30-somethings
raising kids and making mortgage payments may be less likely to buy
multi-K$ radios...not to mention the fact that AMers are by no means
one-dimensional in their radio-related interests.

Of course, the soothing mellow sound of AM audio has a lot to do with
our expected longevity ;-)

My novice rig was a hand-me-down from Dad.. National NCX-3. I coupled
that with the Heathkit Cheyenne MR-1 as an external receiver because the
NCX-3 didn't have a CW 'offset'. Tuning in a station at around the
800cycle area meant that I was zero-beat with the sender. A T/R relay
 helped out tremendously.

Ummm don't you mean an MR-1 Comanche Geoff? ;) I briefly had a Cheyenne.
It was the MT-1 transmitter companion to the MR-1 Comanche.

So corrected. I knew it was one of the two. There was the Comanche and
the Cheyenne. One was the receiver and the other the screen modulated,
single 6146 final transmitter. The Heathkit 'twins'. Mobile radios.
Had both. The cases were bolted together, one on top of the other.
Still have 'em, in fact. Need to build up a power supply for the
receiver and see if it'll still come to life. The pair have been
dormant for 20+ years. In fact, I think it was when I get the Swan
350C, when I quit using the Comanche.

2007-11-20 Thread Mike Duke, K5XU
Funny, SSB operators were making the same stereotypical statements about AM
operators when I was a new SWL with a borrowed S120 in 1966.

And these guys think they're modern!
