Re: [AMRadio] Old-Timer AMers?
I am curious about something in the record keeping of the FAA. I started out in 1958 or maybe 59 as WA6LGT then changed my call to WA5HLE sometime around 1960-61 when I moved to Texas, at that time it was required that you change your call if you moved. Then a few years ago to W5JAI when I became Extra but the records do not show the WA6LGT portion of my ham career. Maybe it was because I was in the military in Alaska when I got the license??? Re: [AMRadio] Old-Timer AMers?
When the FCC computerized they did not copy the old paper records to the computer. They put them all in a warehouse. I sent a request to find my original 1957 ticket. They told me it would take 3 months to find it and the wanted to charge me a bunch of money to search the records. They found the ticket I had in 1967 by looking in an old CallBook! LOL! In the mis 70's I worked on a system for the Army and Air Force to copy all the old paper records to microfilm. That's as close as the became to being computerized. I'll make the 49 year mark, on the 2nd of December. However, I've been around radio all my life. I remember the days when rigs such as the Benton Harbor Kilowatt (DX-100), a TC-7 (I think it was some sort of Collins rig) and a BC-610 were around here at various stages of my life, growing up. I didn't get my first ticket until Feb of 1984. Feb of 2008 will start my 24th year as a licensed ham. I don't know why I waited so long to get a license. I learned the code back when I was 8 years old, as a cub-scout. Dad and I built an AM receiver out of a paper towel tube with copper wire wrapped around it, a long metal bar to tune across the coil, a (new at the time) galena diode and a pair of old cans, made out of hard plastic that hurt my ears to put 'em on. The whole thing was built on a couple of 1x6's, about 12 long. I couldn't get enough of WOAI from a radio set that didn't need external power (batteries or AC) to operate, now matter HOW much those ol' hard-plastic 'cans' hurt my ears! I've been operating AM on the 250TH final since 1986, thanks to John/W5MEU, Dan/W5BU (both SK) and John/WA5BXO. Before the big-rig, there was a Ranger and an SX-28 and first off, on AM was a loaner Swan 350C with some mighty weak sweep-tubes. My novice rig was a hand-me-down from Dad.. National NCX-3. I coupled that with the Heathkit Cheyenne MR-1 as an external receiver because the NCX-3 didn't have a CW 'offset'. Tuning in a station at around the 800cycle area meant that I was zero-beat with the sender. A T/R relay helped out tremendously. Ahh.. the good ol' days (I can hear the ol' pharts now; whipper snapper) LOL At least the tradition lives! -- Driving your AM Rig without a scope, is like driving your car at night, without headlights. Congratulations Steve you have made it to the cellar where I live. Jim/W5JO Well, I'm not quite as old as some of you old timer jaspers, but I'm closing on 50 very soon. I was however a late child in my family. Dad was a WWII vet born in 1917, and both my siblings were much older than me. Gave me a lot of values of that era when I was growing up. Some of my best ham friends are much older than I am, as I seem to relate to them a lot better, however the downside of that is that many of them have become silent keys, and losing a friend is not a good thing, old or not. Down this way, there are still a couple of AM'ers that come to mind that are up there in age; Jim/K5BAI who is near 80, and just put a Gates BC-1H on the air, and Otis/K5SWK who is in his 80's. I have not heard Otis on the of late however. Jim, who we call the old dawg, is on daily. The old dawg can probably outrun me when we go to hamfests as we look for goodies. Ummm don't you mean an MR-1 Comanche Geoff? ;) I briefly had a Cheyenne. It was the MT-1 transmitter companion to the MR-1 Comanche. 73, Ellen - AF9J __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

Ummm don't you mean an MR-1 Comanche Geoff? ;) I briefly had a Cheyenne. It was the MT-1 transmitter companion to the MR-1 Comanche. So corrected. I knew it was one of the two. There was the Comanche and the Cheyenne. One was the receiver and the other the screen modulated, single 6146 final transmitter. The Heathkit 'twins'. Mobile radios. Had both. The cases were bolted together, one on top of the other. Still have 'em, in fact. Need to build up a power supply for the receiver and see if it'll still come to life. The pair have been dormant for 20+ years. In fact, I think it was when I get the Swan 350C, when I quit using the Comanche. -- Driving your AM Rig without a scope, is like driving your car at night, without headlights. [AMRadio] Old-Timer AMers?
Funny, SSB operators were making the same stereotypical statements about AM operators when I was a new SWL with a borrowed S120 in 1966. And these guys think they're modern!
