Briefly, the Receive/Standby (spst) switch is used to ground the cathode
of the 6AQ5 audio output. (Closed in receive mode) The switch is connected
directly to pin 6 of the accessory socket for remote operation.

Re: [AMRadio] Question about Seller of Viking II's on the

2009-02-04 Thread D. Chester
I have never dealt with that guy, but over the years I have heard little but
negative comments and complaints. He apperantly is a well-known ripoff
artist. One person said they sent him a piece of equipment but somethig
about the deal fell through, so they both agreed that they would cancel the
deal and he would ship it back to the seller. When the unit arrived, the
seller noticed that some of the parts inside the radio had been replaced
with defective ones.

I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole.

Re: [AMRadio] Question about Seller of Viking II's on the Auction site

2009-02-01 Thread J.Hankins

Sorry to be late, but I wanted to offer my two cents worth. My
experience (several purchases) is that he is consistent. He always
portrays his stuff as being much better than it actually is, but you can
usually tell that from his pictures. By and large, what he calls
"collector quality" most everybody else calls "as is". Due to the years
of bad comments, he rarely gets top dollar for his stuff, and there very
often are deals to be had because so many people just don't bid at all.
If you never, ever, take what he says at face value and know what things
are really worth, you may get lucky. If you are looking for high quality
stuff that will work out of the box or with minimal work, stay away!!!

Re: [AMRadio] Question about Seller of Viking II's on the Auctionsite

2009-02-01 Thread Jim Wilhite
Bob, if you can be patient then you will find an example of what you
want most likely from an individual that represents it well. I do
understand the impulse buying and it took me retiring and living on
a fixed income to stop most of the impulses.

Watch ebay, unless you deal with someone who uses their call sign in
the ID, you never know who is behind the trade. The person you have
mentioned has had several different ID's in the past. So watch and
look carefully.

I don't know if you subscribe to the various lists that post for
sale ads or not, but it is a good idea to watch those.

I can only say I sold him a ICOM R 71 and he told me he got it damaged and I
ask him what was wrong he stated it didn't power up and wanted his money
back.
I told him send the receiver back first and let me see the damage or call
UPS and I will start a claim.
The next thing I know the receiver was back with me.
I open the receiver and found that power supply board was not the same one I
had just repaired it was missing parts and broken in half.
The deal was he took my supply out that was working correctly and put his
defective one in.
I am only guessing he had one with more options installed because a week
later he had a R 71 loaded with options and I was out everything.
I filed claim with UPS but the problem was it was not in the original box I
shipped it in also the original box was foamed packed and the box I got back
was smaller and had very few peanuts.
So you folks out that that deal with him good luck.
If he has changed his image, I don't know.
I never let him bid on anything of mine ever again.
And I surley won't bid on anything of his.

It is ok to ask this kind of question is my feelings, you are
discussing a piece of AM equipment. However.and this is
directed to anyone who responds.please refrain from posting
anything that can be considered slander.

I know this will put a damper on the description of some of the
deals he may or may not have been involved in purveying, but no one
here wants to be sued, especially me. You may say if you were
satisfied or not, but please don't call him any names.

I have seen some of the deals he has completed and I definitely
would not buy from him.

Be careful - "radiomart" is often reported to not provide the same unit
as shown in his auction photos. I sometimes bid on his items but do so
with the understanding that I might not get as good a unit as in the
pictures. I therefore only bid quite low and let the deal get away if
the bidding goes higher.

Subject: [AMRadio] Question about Seller of Viking II's on the Auction
site

Hi all,

First off, If this should be posted on AMSWAP, My apologies. I was
unsure.

Ok... I see two Viking II's for sale on that famous auction site. The
seller is Radio-Mart. Am I remembering correctly that there have been
problems with him? I really would love to have Viking II. It was my
first radio when I got licensed. Besides, it would be nice to put on AM.

But... I don't want to shell out all my disability money on a pig in a
poke either...

The auctions end in just over 5 hours... What say you all? Should I go
for it?

Again, if this is not being posted to the proper place, I offer my
deepest apologies.

73, cul...

Re: [AMRadio] Question about Seller of Viking II's on the Auctionsite

2009-02-01 Thread Bob Macklin
Radio-Mart is one of the worst crooks on eBay. If you are smart you will not
bid on his auctions.

A few years ago I bought a Heath HM-15 from him. I got it for the minimum
$10 bid. The unit I received was not the unit he had the photo of. The one I
received had a broken meter. And it was not damaged in the mail.

He used to post retaliatory feedback against buyers that gave him negative
feedback. He can't do that anymore.

But he current feedback score you see is not his total negative feedback. It
is only for the last 12 months. You have to look deep to see how bad he
really is.

Bob.. you'll hear many horror stories about Martyn, but personallly, I
have bought several items from him through the years and have no
complaints at all. I always got exactly what he described. I am likely
in the minority, but that's my experience.

[AMRadio] Question for K4KYV

2006-09-03 Thread Donald Chester

I am not Don, but since he hasn't answered, I remember he found a filter at
some surplus place in the Washington, D.C area back several years ago.
Seems
like the cutoff was 3400 Hz on the nose. Not a very expensive part then,
but

IIRC fron his post of this last year, there are unobtainum now.
Joe W4AAB

That is correct. I found the filter in 1973. I have seen ones similar to
it, but always with a different cutoff frequency.

But I think there are circuits available today for simple solid state active
filters that would be just as good.

I preceed the filter with a pre-emphasis circuit that begins a presence rise
at about 800~, and steadily rises up to about 8 dB at 3000~, and then cuts
off sharply at 3400~.

Two microphones are used, in phase and mixed together. An electrovoice
dynamic with crapped out high frequency response is used with a D-104, using
a homebrew two-channel audio mixer with the pre-emphasis curve on the D-104.

I paid only a few bucks for that filter in Washington DC. If I had known
how good it was, I would have bought every one they had. I think they had
about half a dozen in stock.

I have a second filter with about a 5000~ cutoff, much more gradual, that in
switchable with the 3400~ one. I use it when the band is less crowded and
the other person can open up the selectivity.

My old Tandberg portable radio uses the ferrite up to 5 mhz then the
telescoping vert. above that.
Having a directional antenna for 75 mtrs is real nice unless there's
a noise source in the same direction as the desired signal and for
directionally different QSOs the radio must be turned to match up with
the incoming direction. IE, 90 degrees to copy Ohio and MD in
round-table.
I have often thought that a large remotely rotatable ferrite based loop
on the roof or attic would be real nice for those "difficult" times.

Excellent! Thanks for all the info guys!

Re: [AMRadio] Question about ferrite rods

2006-06-16 Thread Bob Bruhns
Hi Conor,

A ferrite rod antenna should be perpendicular to
the oncoming signal wavefront, and also
perpendicular to its electrical field (or parallel
to its magnetic field). Because you would
ordinarily be close to the ground with a loopstick
radio, signals will tend to be vertically
polarized at the loopstick - so for most signals
the ferrite rod would be horizontal, and
perpendicular to the incoming signal.

If you "null" a signal by rotating the rod to
point toward the signal, you may find that the
best null is obtained with the rod tilted slightly
upward toward the transmitter. This is because
the signal wavefront tilts slightly toward the
earth.

Loops and loopsticks can be used to null
interfering stations to hear weaker signnals on or
close to the strong station's frequency. Skywave
peaks and nulls are less precise than groundwave -
nulls and peaks vary as skywave paths vary and
fade, especially at shorter wavelengths, I think.
But with groundwave, the behavior of a loopstick
is fairly precise.

There is something about paramagnetic materials
that attracts magnetic flux and concentrates it in
the material, and such magnetic material will also
increases the inductance of windings around it, so
the coils do not have to be as large as they would
be in air. This is why ferrite loopsticks are
used - a very small antenna can be effective.
Ferrite is useful up to the megahertz range, and
some ferrites are even useful to UHF and beyond.

[AMRadio] Question about ferrite rods

2006-06-16 Thread Conor Farrell

Hi all,

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm wondering how the
directionality of a ferrite rod works. Basically, how do I point it to
a source? Should the radio wave propagation direction be parallel or
perpendicular to the ferrite rod?
