[AMRadio] Re: Getting on the Air - May 2008 QST
There's a difference in articles published in the club's magazine, QST, when they're written by subscribers compared to articles that are written by club staff at the ARRL. The difference is that the articles carrying a staff byline represent official League policy to some degree. All other views are those of outsiders -- those outside the political environment in Newington. So, regardless of the $65/page the club magazine might pay for outside freelance articles about AM, vintage gear, homebrewing, or the category we favor here on this reflector, the value of that story does not carry the same weight as the implied endorsement reflected in an article on AM presented by a League staffer. That's just the way it is. And it's why you won't see anything positive written by them, about AM. It's not their prevailing mood to accommodate us. Ask me if you need detailed proof. --Paul/VJB Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Let's not forget that there are appliance operators on AM, as well. Barrie of course you're correct, but that takes us away from the point of concern, where someone at a publishing house is trying to dissuade people from working on or crafting their own gear. Watch for type acceptance next. No user serviceable parts inside. I welcome appliance operators to AM, where they will remain exposed on a regular basis to the encouraging, knowledgeable base of information and discussion among the rest of us. --Paul/VJB Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Re: [AMRadio] Re: Getting on the Air - May 2008 QST
In today's amateur world, the operator's interest can be the use of the AM mode versus using vintage equipment that helped developed the AM mode. I would suspect, there are many amateurs who have no interest in stepping back in time with receivers that required lots of knob manipulation or with transmitters that required peak/dip/load/switch/pray/etc. several times just to QSY around the bands. Their interest is communicating with quick and non-cumbersome type operations. The appliance provides this flexibility. When I'm in a hurry to get on the air, the appliance is a blessing while the old stuff sits there warming up, warming up, warming up. I have a Yeasu Ft 847. It has no provision for an AM filter. On AM, I can not distinguish between 3.880 and 3.885. That must be the AM transmitter fault. I think most of the problems is poor designed receivers. Earlier on this reflector, we saw some anonymous League person's pronouncement about the footprint a wholesome AM signal should occupy. The judgment of that person was not established through experience or a reference to someone who has such experience. Both of these examples should help convince people not to look to the ARRL to represent our part of the hobby. They don't get it, and/or deliberately go out of their way to cast us negatively. --Paul/VJB Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Re: [AMRadio] Re: Getting on the Air - May 2008 QST
About the May 2008 QST text . . . If things keep going the way they are, the ARRL Handbook and its accompanying CD might very well degenerate into a catalog. Go to a given chapter and instead of finding text and explanatory material you will instead find a listing of manufacturers, telephone numbers, addresses and the like. This would save an enormous amount of paper. The treehuggers would be happy. But I have a hunch that is not the way it will go. I would instead hope that we merely have an opinion by a few (misguided and perhaps incompetent) souls who are out of step with the real ham radio fellows. I put in a lot of work on Chapter 12 of the 2008 ARRL HB and I doubt it would have been accepted if the real long-term goal of the ARRL was to get folks to switch to store-bought stuff. I think we have a hobby with an extremely broad spectrum of members,. from plug-n-play up to designers of state-of-the-art stuff. But as Paul / VJB nicely stated, it is wrong to encourage buying when so much more fun can be had by building. - Jim WB6BLD __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
Re: [AMRadio] Re: Getting on the Air - May 2008 QST
IMHOP,tube type QRP rigs could be a good way to start learning. Volunteer AM type instructors can teach the theory and safety aspects. Theory is theory no matter what the power level and when conditions warrant, throw on the amps, starting with 807, 811 and 810 etc. Along with theory, operating instructions should be taught. My local club does a great job of helping newbies get their license but apparently the spark to get on the air is only planted for the 2 Meter FM daily net and then for less than an hour. Where are the Extra phone operators the FCC thought needed more frequencies?? I don't get it; something doesn't compute - the author of the subject article, Joel, W1ZR, sometimes checks in to the AWA AM net on Sunday afternoons on 3837Kc/s, on AM, and using a boatanchor station. I've considered him one of the good guys. I have not read the article, as I haven't received QST since early 2000. 73, -Larry/NE1S __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
