Re: [AMRadio] test

2004-06-10 Thread Jim Wilhite
Hi Mike:

Well not quite. Have a DX 100 up and running right now. Am waiting for
some shelves to arrive before I complete the installation.

The tower has yet to be put up for permanent antennas on 75 meters/40
meters, but that will come soon. I am waiting for the guy who built the
house to come out and help me choose a location for the base. It is a self
supporting thing with a 3x3x4 ft. base and I have rock under part of the
foundation.

I am ready for the King though. There are times others have trouble hearing
me. Looking forward to having it on.

The reason for the test is that sometime back I posted to the board and it
was rejected for some reason. They have installed new filters and the
header on my message was rejected. I contacted Brian about it and he was
looking into it. I just wanted to see if he found the trouble. I thought
so and sure enough it is. Good to hear from you.

Re: [AMRadio] Test?

2005-07-06 Thread Bob Macklin
Clay,

I am not hearing the 3870 group anymore. I don't hear much on 75/80 anymore
either. But I do get some of the RTTY guys on 3615 on a regular bassis.

I have been hoping to see some AM on 7290. I am hoping to get my DX-60 on
line in the next month.

I am retired and parts acquisition takes a back seat to rent and food. but
this month I will have enough discressionary money to get the connectors and
other parts I need.

I am in a valley that runs N/S. On 80M I only have a N/S path. Alaska &

well not really for hf i am in a fairly good area. but for VHF it sucks.. i
am really in a black hole or better a black V. if you will look at the maps
over the years all VHF signals from EU most of the time go down the east
coast following the mountain range that runs north and south out of new
England. they also follow the Ohio river valley area hitting cincin and
Louisville . very few times do i get to hear and when i do hear everyone
else gets a s9 + and if i can get thru i get an s5. running 100 watts an 5
eles at 70 ft.

oh well back to the black V of KY.

>From: "Tom Chesek" We are not doing tests today, only quizzes to prepare for tests.

According to what I have monitored on 75m, the way you are supposed to do
tests over the air is to (1) connect the crappiest sounding microphone you
can find, (2) put your transmitter in SSB mode, (3) turn your audio up as
high as it will go, way past the point of distortion, turn on your leenyar,
making sure the blower noise comes through loudly enough to make the meter
read at least half-scale, then (4) tranmit, yelling into the microphone:
"Audio - audio -audio - uuudio"

You can be assured that another SSB op will come back to you and tell you
what a good sounding signal you have. :-)

Occasionally between the words "audio" you whistle then repeat ad

have been on the air for 5 mins. He never said anything after he
finished.

That's only immediately after the "audio-audio" test. And it's "Howbouddat

"Ghost-talking" eh?

Now that's the exact term I've heard slopbucketeers accuse me of, when I
would be in an AM QSO that happened to fall near their dead-air frequency,
and they could hear me but not the other station in my QSO.

Don, where do you think I heard this term? And where do you think
those slopbucketeers got it? I'd be willing to venture that over 80%
of the jerks, lids, troublemakers and miscreants who give us a hard
time for running AM, are ex-CB'ers. And as you well know, CB'ers, ex
or other wise (freebanders in particular), disdain the use of AM as
being unworthy of true radio operators. Only kids, drive-time
suburbanites and losers use AM. Every "professional" radio operator
knows that!

The original anti-AM element in amateur radio probably go all the way back
to the days before CB.

Those were the first converts, the true-believers, who jumped on the SSB
bandwagon when it was being heavily promoted during the 50's. During that
era, nearly every ham magazine, radio club, national radio organisation,
etc. became a propaganda agent for SSB. From the beginning there was some
conflict between users of the two modes, but they seem to get along pretty
well until the early 60's, when the cheap transceivers like Swans, Galaxies,
Heathkit "Hotwater" rigs, and others, came on the market. "Sideband for the
masses" ...and a wide open market for a new product! Up till then, the
only way to get on SSB was to spend a considerable sum of money on Collins
or Central Electronics gear, or else build your own. Many of the wannabe
slopbucketeers had neither the financial resources to buy a commercial rig,
nor the knowledge, expertise and test equipment necessary to build a SSB
rig. Once those cheap rigs hit the market, the floodgates were opened and
that was when the great AM/SSB wars erupted in the mid-60's. A legacy of
this conflict that still persists to this day throughout ham radio is the
deliberate interference and jamming that became commonplace during that era.

By the time Incentive Licensing had been in effect for a year or two, AM had
all but disappeared from the air. The few of us who stayed on AM were
harassed and heckled as could be expected for anyone who refuses to go along
with the crowd, plus the SSB warriors thought they had won, and it was an
extreme thorn in their side whenever they heard the few remaining AM
stations on the air.

AM started coming back in the early 70's, only a few years after it
supposedly had died, and now AM has been "coming back" for about 35 years,
longer that it had ever been "dead" in the first place, and for almost as
long as it was ever used by amateur radio operators before its
officially-declared "death" in the late 60's.

So, some of the anti-AM crowd we hear to-day are old timers, veterans of the
60's AM vs. SSB wars, although many of those are now SK, and others have
mellowed out in their old age, some of whom have actually returned to AM..

But you are correct, most of the remaining disdain for AM that you witness
to-day originally probably has its roots in the 11m crowd.

night.
I never heard so much intolerance, they hate contests, they hate AM, they
hate blacks, they hate the government, they seem to hate everything, and go
on about it at length.
Daytime on 80 meters, normal people seem to be on, but at night, I often
hear only the southern hate nets.

If you listen at night, you would think the US is filled with ex cb, ex KKK,
people who live in trailers and hate almost everything, talking about
revolution.

I am surprised that any AM operation is possible on 80 meters at night with
so many people like that on at the same time.

That's a big reason why I do almost exclusively CW. AM will wait
until I get my Dad's (W5JHJ SK) Globe Champ 350 going here at my

abilities of the tertiary syphilitic cretins that hang out on the 75

I am getting really bothered by the people I hear
on ssb on 80 meters at
night.
I never heard so much intolerance, they hate
contests, they hate AM, they
hate blacks, they hate the government, they seem
to hate everything, and go
on about it at length.
Daytime on 80 meters, normal people seem to be on,
but at night, I often
hear only the southern hate nets.

If you listen at night, you would think the US is
filled with ex cb, ex KKK,
people who live in trailers and hate almost
everything, talking about
revolution.

I am surprised that any AM operation is possible
on 80 meters at night with
so many people like that on at the same time.

Re: [AMRadio] TEST

2009-02-07 Thread Barrie Smith
We've got a heap of them (I said a heap) here in the pacific northwest, on
75M. It's somewhat less of a problem on 160M, but still there.

I'm speaking on deliberate interference.

It's not new.
That was the primery reason for building the (soon to be rebuilt) push-pull
450TL rig back in the middle 1990s.

This problem is not new, nor is it restricted to a particular region.

We can fight it. We can win a battle, but we cannot win the war. There are
too many of them!

Re: [AMRadio] TEST

2009-02-07 Thread Brett Gazdzinski
I have recently built a K2, and have been jumping around the bands, then I
got an Alpha Delta dx-lb-plus, which does 160 to 10 meters, you can tune it
to have a low swr on all the bands, its narrow on 160 and 80, but it works
well otherwise,
I can hear many signals on 160, some are very strong, I never managed that
before.
Unfortunately, I doubt I could get on, I would likely get into things in the
neighborhood, so I don't operate AM at night generally.

This antenna seems to be able to take a fair amount of power, so far it has
handled the legal limit on AM without problems, and I did tests at twice
that.
Its 100 feet long, which is short for 80, very short for 160, but seems to
work very well on receive at least.

If you adjust it, you can do away with the tuner if you operate at the low
swr points.

I only have 100 feet between trees, away from power lines, so this antenna
seems to be the best bet if you want to jump around bands.
The K2 is in the den (its very small) so I can listen to CW and ssb (and AM
using ssb) while the wife watches TV.

In listening to ssb at night, I have noticed what the ssb guys are talking
about, and sorry to say, almost all the hate is from 4 land, not to say ALL
people in 4 land are the same, or that the same feelings don't exist in
other places, but what I hear is ALL coming from 4 land.

160 meters seems much nicer, I wonder why.
Has 160 been in very good shape lately, or is it the antenna?
I used to try listening using other antenna's and all I ever heard weak
signals and lots of static...
W1AW was 50 over on 160 last night, and I just heard some AM guys on 1880
that were 40 over, no noise, no trash, nice!
I have also heard people from all over the country!

[AMRadio] Test Equipment Recommendation

2004-08-23 Thread Bill Pancake
Would appreciate a recommendation as to make and model of a VTVM that will come
with an rf probe that is suitable for using when working on boatanchor gear. I
just need an idea of what to look for. Thanks, Bill, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Last -flurry- I saw around here, was Jim's request for the

It has been quite Mike and most everywhere. Dog days of
summer has descended here and I am having to cut dead trees
before winter.

Static has been horrible for a long time. We had a month of
rain in this part of the country which precluded operating
the radio too.

talk about a nice pair of big jugs and not talking tubes...hi hi...That

H,
I thought you may have got the same message as I did about a week ago
referencing too many bounce messages. If I didn't go to the QTH.com website
within in X.X time, I would have been permanently deleted from the list.

RE: [AMRadio] Test, Dayton

2008-05-19 Thread D. Chester

Hay Rick...Everyone seems to be at Dayton or wherever. Really not much
traffic...

Bob W1PE

I just got back from Dayton. This was the first one I had been able to
attend since 2003. Attendance was way down, compared to what I remember
about 10 years ago. You could actually walk through the corridors in the
flea market without having to elbow your way through the crowd. Not the
usual amount of Daytonmobiles to bump into your ankles or run over your
feet, but there were many empty flea market spaces. Even inside, while it
was threatening rain, it was easy to navigate through the display areas. I
spent a grand total of about 30 minutes inside, except for the AM Forum on
Friday and the FCC Forum on Saturday. The rest of the time I spent outside,
with an occasional break at the Pub. Despite the predicted chance of rain
all 3 days, and thickening clouds at midday on Saturday, the weather
cooperated and it was sunny most of the time with comfortable temperature; I
didn't see any rain the entire weekend. I didn't go back Sunday morning,
but the sky was blue when we left Dayton.

Despite the low turnout, this was one of the best flea markets and
gatherings I had seen in years. I saw many AM transmitters like Rangers and
Valiants. Several rack mounted AM transmitters in various degrees of
completeness. A lot of parts and vintage/antique stuff. Probably at least
as much of that kind of stuff as SSB transceivers and leenyars. Very
little computer scrap.

I didn't come back with a tremendous lot, but if this had been 20 years ago,
the car would have been loaded and dragging the ground. I am much more
selective about what I pick up these days, since I already have one or more
of many of the more desirable items I ran across, but limited space for more
stuff.

I ran into a lot of people this time whom I have talked to over the air, but
didn't remember ever meeting in person.

At the FCC forum, the subject of Winlink came up in the Q-A discussion at
the end, and what I found interesting was that one of the speakers made a
comment about how the FCC regulates emission types, not protocol, and went
on to say that AM, FM, SSB, CW, etc were all legal modes, and then continued
the discussion regarding digital stuff. Note that he mentioned AM first on
his list. Something else that I found encouraging was his comment that
"there isn't much going" on right now in the rulemaking department. It
looks like amateur radio in general, and AM in particular, are pretty much
flying under the radar at the FCC for the moment.

I was a little disappointed at the turnout at the Saturday evening AM
get-together at the Marion's Pizza. Many of those I had run into during the
day and who said they planned to come, didn't show up. We did manage to
fill a couple of tables, but they were separated. Apparently another group
of people already had the side room nailed down.

[AMRadio] Test please ignore

2008-06-15 Thread Bob Bruno - K2KI
Ok. you didn't ignore this message. So, I will tell you why I am sending
it...

Past two days I have seen ZERO mails from any of the QTH lists. I
finally saw a reply in boatanchors to a topic that I never have seen.
Leads me to believe that there is a problem with the routing between the
list server and my email server. So... I am sending this test out to see
if it returns home.

Oh BTW... I also sent one to the test forum.
