[AMRadio] Thanks for SB-200 advice

2008-06-11 Thread John Lawson

Many thanks to everyone who chimed in on the SB-200.

The unit coming to me has a power supply problem, and I think I'll do a
few of the more 'popular' mods while I'm sorting that out.

Seems it'll be a good fit for the way I'm operating AM these days

[AMRadio] Thanks, Sorry for the Delay

2007-09-17 Thread Todd, KA1KAQ
Had a family emergency to deal with over the last week which kept me
out of town and away from the list until this past weekend. Just
wanted to say thank you to Brian for the 'appointment' to AMbassador,
and to the hearty welcome extended to Gary and I.

I've been a big fan of the online AM resources for the last decade
plus, especially this list, the AM Window, AM Classifieds, and AMfone.
Not sure how long I've been on this list, but as a point of reference
it was back before we changed to a different format/server as I
offered to help translate the archives at that time.

So I've been here for a while, around the block a few times, and am
happy to do whatever I can to help out. I credit the group online as
much as listening to the receiver at home with finally getting me back
on the air and active last year. It was just to difficult to sit by
and read about all the fun I was missing! It's been just about a year
since I worked Jim W5JO for my then-furthest AM contact ever.

Here's to a great group, and many more years of cooperation and
enjoyment in keeping AM alive, active, and moving forward into the
future.

You know, Todd... your new 'position' requires you to travel (at your
expense) to several AM'ers around the country, now. Snapping pictures,
and recording audio samples so that we might all enjoy through this
wonderous venue call 'The Internet' now falls into your capable hands.

So, when can I schedule your visit to South Texas? AM'ers of note here
would be W5KGZ/Perry (BC-610), AD5HR/Jon (homebrew p-p 807's mod'ed by
p-p 807's, 100% homebrew), The Hamshack of John/WA5BXO-BJ/WB5PKD
(homebrew p-p 250TH mod'ed by (4) 813's p-p parallel), WD5JKO/Jim
(highly modified Central Electronics Lab 20A/8877 combo), and of course,

no trip to South Texas would be complete without a visit to the shack of

K5SWK (100% homebrewed 833 x p-p 833's). *MAYBE* we could go visit
Steve/K5LTK and his homebrewed 100w exciter and homebrewed 4-1000 rig,
modulated by push-pull 813's.

AFTER YOU GET HERE, I'd be happy to show you around. Just plan on a
couple of weeks travel time between these noteable shacks.

;-)

Kidding, of course (kinda) but if you -ever- do get the chance to spend
some time down here, I'd be happy to show you around.

Heehee... You got that right Bob! North Texas might sink before long.

Todd You were here near the beginning if you remember the big
conversion of the list to qth.net. We lost about 3 years of messages
from 1997 to about 2000 or so, mostly my fault due to ignorance of how
to go about the deal. I don't even remember who it was we used then,
but they would not reply to a single email about getting the archives.
The service became so bad that I had no choice but leave the 3 years
worth of emails and make the transition.

Yep, everytime I see the name 'BELTON' posted, I get envious. Been
hearing about that 'fest for years, more recently the one Brian was
discussing on the mountain top also. Went to Hamcation in Orlando in
2005, but got there on the wrong day. Been to Gaithersburg FARfest
once, got there late also because of a stubborn RA-1000. The local
stuff is nice bcause it's close and easy, but traveling around is a
lot of fun.

You can bet that once I get moved and settled (and build a baby to
keep the wife busy), I'll be making it a point to get over that way.
I've actually met radio folks out in the Portland/Vancouver area,
Florida, Maryland, and around New England. It's always enjoyable to
put faces with names/voices, and see what goodies they're hiding in
their radio room.

The Icom made the trip. The only thing I see wrong with it is the
programming software I have for it can read from it, but not write to it...
It looks like it programs, then gives me a Clone Error... That is odd!

Oh Well! It works great and I thank you very much.

I am able to talk into a repeater that is 40+ miles away with it. My antenna
is a homebrew J-Pole for 2 Meters in my Attic.. Single story house!

Gotta love Icom..

Thanks and I hope your sales get you what you need, I'll be watching for
anything else I can't live without!

Take care,

Bow

2006-10-31 Thread Alan Beck

Hi,

I am looking for NOS to keep as a batch for my HR-10 Heath RX.

2 of 6EA8
sourced 6X4 already
6BZ6
6EA6
6BJ7
6BE8

I would love to have a few NE-2's to replace my burnt out one in my VFO
as I think it allows radiation to aid in spot operation, right now it is
very weak.

If someone wishes to correct me on that one, I would graciously accept.

Alan

[AMRadio] Thanks for Tuner Advice!

2006-08-18 Thread John Lawson

The majority of folks seem to like the Palstar products an awful lot
and there were a few Ten-Tec plugs, too.

I think I'll end up with the 2 or 3 KW model of one or the other - just
have to do some more investigating - I'm mostly concerned with the ability
to handle continuous power into a widely-varying antenna impedance.

And as I said, eventually I'll put together an automatically-controlled
unit that will tune the feedpoint of the antenna and still present a
fairly constant impedance to the feedline... and be able to pass a 'real'
kilowatt in the process. I've got the big roller inductors for that,
finding capacitors is next, then the sensors, stepper motors, and
controls, etc just no time right now for such a project.

Thanks again to all who gave their opinions and advice!

Cheers

Compared to this either of those are wimps :-)

Now, THAT is a real man's tuner!

Perfect match for the transmitter that has a tube with handles!

Thanks to all for your suggestions and guidance. Great thread for
getting help. Hope to talk on the air at some point with all. I gotta
believe that AM is making a comeback. SSB has gotten a bit boring. Too
bad AM cannot get the respect it deserves and the frequencies to go with
it. Thanks again.

Looking forward to hearing you on the air, Dick. There's a group
of us 5-landers on 3.885 EARLY in the mornings (from 4 to 6am)
and then the 'later morning' crew fires up around 8am, on 3.880.

There are some other guys that might be 100 to 200 miles closer
to ya, on 3.890 that you could give a listen to. Or, you could
go homestead a new frequency some/anywhere else in the phone
band. Seems there's a 'waste land' down below 3.850. QSO's are
few and far between and mostly SSB, but I've known some AM to
occur on 3.840, 3.820, and even 3.760. The point is, we don't
-have- to be limited to 3.870~3.890. SSB is just another version
of AM 'Phone operation, and therefore is permitted anywhere
'phone operations are allowed.

Thanks to all who responded to the lightning information. I have passed this
on to my brother, and hopefully he will
use some of this to prevent another hit.

2004-01-16 Thread B. Morgan Sherrod
Thanks to all those who replied, and gave your opinions on how the list should
be kept. It IS good to hear so many want
to keep it as-is, and I go along with that thought 100 percent.

Unfortunately, there is no way with the mailman software at this time to
simply purge posts coming from an invalid
account (at least I'm not yet aware of a way). I have to tend to them, or the
notice emails from the software come
about every 6 hours saying There a so and so number of posts you need to tend
to In the Winter months, I get at
least 20 a day. In the past, I have seen some 40 or more.

Geoff; the message you got is another problem. I can't change it. Apparently
it is a generic message for all the
QSL.NET list's. I personally liked majordomo and it's interface a lot more
than I do the mailman software.

We will keep things as they are on this list, and by the way, I would never
change anything without consulting first
with our fine member base.

Thanks again es 73 All.
