Gary, Just gone through a massive lightening storm here a moment ago so everything was off for a while, yes the caps are Ok, I have actually swapped out the transformer and tried it under a light load, exactly the same, I will be 'hot dipping' this evening see how it is tomorrow, fingers crossed here goes. 73 Max M0GHQ/KJ4ISS - Original Message - From: "Gary" To: "Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service" Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2009 6:48 PM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure? > You say, "latest boatanchor", which mite mean that the transformer is > becoming saturated to much from an over load condition. You say, "latest boatanchor", which mite mean that the transformer is becoming saturated to much from an over load condition. This would cause a rattle. Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure?
Hi, I used to rebuild motors and transformers and the older ones never seemed to keep the laminations tight or bonded. We used to take older ones and put them in an oven for a couple of hours at 150 or so degrees. Then put them submerged in a tank of thinned varnish for about 10 minutes. Pull them out and wipe off the excess varnish and cool overnight. Heating the core seems to invite the thinned varnish to penetrate deeper into the laminations. This always kept the cores quiet. Its a little messy, but works. Good Luck. Mel, --- On Wed, 12/23/09, rbethman wrote: From: rbethman Subject: Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure? Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure?
Bob, No this is in a Drake R-4c, that is why it is a tad irritating, if it was in the '610 it would probably not notice so much, also I have spares for all of them. I have removed it and am going to leave it in a pot of varnish overnight, better not put it in the oven the Turkey might taste a bit odd on the 25th ;-) it will either make no difference or will sort it, all the laminations look tight and it is already varnished maybe there is a small looseness somewhere however the bobbin looks tight enough. it is 30 years old though maybe something has moved over time. 73 Max M0GHQ/KJ4ISS - Original Message - From: "rbethman" To: "Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service" Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2009 5:23 PM Subject: Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure? > Max - Is this your BC-610E? > > If it is, I believe they use open frame transformers. Forgot to mention, if you do set the transformer on rubber feet be sure to electrically ground the frame to the chassis to maintain the integrity of the safety ground just in case of a winding fault. You might remove one of the end bells and try inserting something between the bobbin and the laminations at the end. Maybe that is a mite loose. Re: [AMRadio] transformer rattle - kill or cure?
As a broadcast engineer I have seen (or heard) transformers rattle as you've described. My suggestion would be to let it be, especially if it stops after a while. It sounds to me like it rattles when it's cold and stops after it warms up. Does the noise gradually subside or just quit abruptly? It is annoying to listen to the laminations rattle but it would be even more annoying to try to "fix" one problem and create another. Some transformer windings are spaced apart and spacers may loosen some when they're cool and "tighten up" after they warm up. I used to have one that did that and it really bothered me until I talked to the factory guy and he explained what was happening. Even worse than transformer laminations rattling is hearing a bank of SCRs grunting and groaning. (I'll bet some on this list even know which line of transmitters I'm talking about.)
