Re: [AMRadio] Average OP Age
Both Bob and Geoff are correct. we are all getting older. i have 6 transmitters setting in the shop waiting for me to get them going. but work for the past 20 yrs has kept me out of the shop. now at 60.5 yrs i am not working but the past six months has had me catching up on things the xyl wanted done or needed done at home. well that list is now down to 3 items so the work shop got cleaned out so i could get to the benchs last week. now i need to decide what tx's i want to keep and get up an running and which ones i want to pass along to another restorer. like most on this list i took my test in front of the FCC in 62 . took me 3 months after school each day studying. i am a pack rat hi hi also. that helps so i have lots of parts along the two 14ft walls of the shop. yes bob i still have my Heath kit HV probe and my shorting stick two items i would never let go of. Geoff is correct about the tests. they teach nothing this day and time. i taught theory for 15yrs for the local club but fewer and fewer wanted anything but a tech lis. so i gave up as more and more just wanted to memorize the answers to the tests. Maybe the answer is here on the Internet for the new kids? maybe we should start some kind of theory class here a refresher for us old farts and a learning chance for those who might like to build. who knows maybe out there somewhere is a kid that has the bug but just does not know where to start. i know i read every email on this reflector and have found that i had forgotten a lot more then i thought i had. thanks to you guys i have had my mind restarted hi hi.. i know there are a lot of us out there hoarding parts that someone needs to start or finish that project. maybe we should start asking if anyone needs this or that and maybe i want to build this but how do i start anyone have any ideals ?. i for one want to build a tuner for a open wire feed ant. have the caps coils and R F amp meter just need to figure out what type of tuner i need to build. i am going to put together an off center fed dipole for 160/80mts and i want a good tuner for it that will handle my Globe Champion 350A or my Valiants. anyway think you guys for keeping our minds alive and working. Re: [AMRadio] Average OP Age
Hi Bob, Yeah, I sure do remember the FCC examiners. I took all my exams except the extra at the FCC offices. I'll never forget my first experience with my Novice ticket. I had juat learned the code and really wasn;t solid at 5WPM, but my dad was going to Atlanta on business and I asked if I could go along and take the test. I lived in Asheville, NC at that time and Atlanta was the nearest examining point unless one wanted to go to a quarterly examing point, the closest being Knoxville, TN. I had just missed one there. In any event, I went into the exam room and they started sending code and I started copying. I was doing really well until I made a fatal mistake. I looked up and there, glaring at me through coke bottle thick glasses was the examinar. He was about 5 feet tall and had a moustache and of course those glasses! I froze solid and could not copy another letter. Ill never forget those words he said after he checked my paper. Come back and see me in 30 days! I did and the next time I passed with flying colors, copying all 5 minutes solid without a single miss. This time I didn't look at him until I was finished, but when he checked my copy, he smiled at me! Re: [AMRadio] Average OP Age
Hi Bob, I don't remember the lady, but I sure will never forget Mr Cline. He was a piece of work! I went back to see him about 6 months later when I took my General. Passed the code again, missing only 2 letters out of the whole 5 minutes and also missed 2 on the written. Not too shabby. My Advanced is a bit of a story. I had injured my back at work and was off for nearly 6 months. I was determined to accomplish something during that period so I deided to take a swat at the Advanced. It was the last day they gave exams at the Baltimore field office b4 the VE program went into effect. I walked into the exam room and they started sending code. I didn't need it for the Advanced since I already had credit for 13 WPM from my General, but I decided to copy it anyway. AAfter the test was finished, I asked the examiner what the CW was all about. He told me that it was the Radio Telegraph First exam with 25WPM code groups. I asked if he would mind checking my copy just for laughs. I had only missed one group out of the 5 minute run! I asked if I could possibly get credit for the Extra code test and take a swipe at the Extra written. He said no, that the extra code had to be 20 WPM Plain text. RATS! At least I passed the Advanced written. 73, John, W4AWM ** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

I just hope we encourage some younger folks (like the 20 something who checked in) by not only trying to interest them in AM, but also giving them the kind of deals that got us started. There's nothing wrong with returning the favor of the cheap dx-100, ranger, or art-13 starter rigs so many of us enjoyed back in the day thanks to an OM willing to pass along a bargain to keep AM on the air. I'm 56, haven't been without an AM rig since 1967... latest project...bc-610I... this has been a GREAT thread... From some of the questions I see posted by newbys on several Ham forums I have to wonder how they ever passed the test. Depends on the meter movement. A FS=1mA meter movement is 1000 ohms per volt. So, in order to measure kV, the series shunt is 1Megohm per 1000v. Therefore, if your DC volt meter reads 0 ~ 5, then 5Megohms would measure 5,000VDC at full scale. I think, though, you're asking more along the lines of who, of the 'todays ham' crowd even posses the knowledge of how to build a meter shunt and I've got to agree. Have you -seen- a test, recently? I got licensed in Feb of 1984, by two general class license holders. That was before the VE program. In September of that following year, was the last time the FCC came to San Antonio to administer tests. The VE program was -very- close behind (3 months or so, as I recall). 10 years after that, I helped out in the VE program, and Oh My Goodness!! The CW test is 'MULTIPLE GUESS'? I'm *LESS* concerned about the calculations, *OR* building the shunt. I have *MUCH* more concern for the youngster when it comes to *making* the High Voltage Probe! What clue does he have about insulation thickness? What about creapage distance? Heathkit used to make and sell a 20KVDC HV probe. Has anyone priced a new one lately? Go ahead - take your 1KV VTVM and poke around a 3KV or 4KV power supply - heck, even 2KV?!?!?! Somebody is *going* to get seriously hurt! Run a pair of 813s @ 2KV. Okay, whom is going to do what measurements? THIS IS what *WE* are losing with *US* getting older! I'm a young pup at 57! Bob - N0DGN Geoff/W5OMR wrote: Depends on the meter movement. All my homebrew stuff uses radio shack meters and home made shunts. To calibrate them, I use a variac and a dmm and get the meters to read the same up to 1000 volts (what the DMM does). I been looking at the extra class test, I can homebrew a station and an antenna, but cant pass that test, lots of stuff about modes I never heard of, digital stuff, satellite stuff, vhf stuff, etc. YUK! That was always a point of contention of mine... Why would I *CARE* what the % of blanking is of black on a video screen on ATV, or SSTV? and, Rules about TV via ham radio confuse me... if Video (ATV) is only on UHF (and above) why do you have to be an Extra to operate ATV, when the band is open to Technicians and up? I memorized those parts of the test/question pool long enough to pass, and to hell with the why's... I learned about j+/- stuff. Don't remember it, but I remember I studied that part of it, for a month, trying to understand more of the 'why' in figuring antenna calculations. -- -Geoff/W5OMR __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

That reminds me of something I read a while back that I thought was interesting. It explained how the Technician class license was originally intended for radio and electronic experimenters. A problem arose in that some Techs were communicating with each other on the air for conversations sake. Some in the Ham community thought that should be illegal. I guess the communicators won. :) I guess it was like Geoff was saying even back then. More members - more $$$. Kent/KX5KW On Monday 23 July 2007 02:09:38 pm Jim Wilhite wrote: You are right Brett.
