Re: [AMRadio] Photos of Damaged Mod Iron
Gary, I apologize for drawing any bad press your way over this. My intention was to show that even when things are packed well, as evidenced by the blueboard foam in the photos cut to fit the iron, double layers of white foam sheeting, and double boxing, it can still get trashed by some idiot. Despite what the pictures clearly show or you and I know firsthand, it doesn't surprise me that a self-appointed expert would know better and dispute the obvious. Everyone I've talked with who has done business with you has been satisfied with the result. Of the one or two issues I've heard where something wasn't just so, you made it right immediately and folks were happy. I've never had any item damaged enough in shipping to say so, and I've received plenty of packages - heavy and otherwise - packed less competently than the mod iron. These include a 100 lb RCA receiver shipped from Colorado, equally heavy Hallicrafters R-649A shipped from Chicago, and 75kg of WWII aircraft radio gear shipped from Australia loosely wrapped in bubble wrap and newspaper. None of it came through damaged, muchless like this. You can destroy any packaging material and any package if you beat on it hard enough. I look forward to getting this matter sorted out with FedEx and returning the transformer to its intended use. You do excellent work, I'm glad you offer this service to the radio community. ~ Todd On 8/28/07, Gary <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Yes, I call it packing. Very fine, Gary. I was only talking in generalities, of course. Everyone has the right to air his/her opinions. If you run another ad in the Collins Journal, please let me know as we did before. I am in the process of putting together the July/August issue. It will be one of the best. I received a transformer back from him a few months ago that weighed in the 20 pound range and it was packed the same as this one and made it without a scratch. The shipper is at fault here, no doubt about it. Thanks, Rick. Having received transformers from Gary, you speak from a position of experience and knowledge, rather than from lack of. For the late-arrivals, I'll summarize: All the packing in the world won't protect your package from bad handling. Not average, typical, day-to-day handling. BAD handling. I've heard people piss and moan for years about UPS being awful. I've never had anything trashed by them, not even remotely close to this. That doesn't mean others haven't. Good packaging will *usually* protect your precious cargo, but not always. Even if 99% of the handlers are good workers who take pride in there work, you still have the one percenters who don't. Ship enough things, you will eventually find one of them. And as I mentioned in my previous post (pay attention this time, Dr Dave), the packaging looks bad because it is TRASHED, pulverized, etc. If you think the packing is the issue, maybe someone can explain why the wooden base it was bolted to is in 7-8 pieces? Sorta shoots that 'poor packing' statement to hell, eh? 3/4" solid wood, destroyed. From a bumpy ride for a 40 lb. parcel in a packed trailer down the interstate? Yeah, right. We're not talking one point of impact here, a dent in an otherwise-clean box, or such. The entire package was trashed. It looked more like a ball than a box. The ends were damaged through two layers of cardboard, two layers of foam board. Holes worn through where it was dragged or slid along the floor. The sides weren't harmed beyond the studs being bent. Yet the same packaging was used throughout. Seems the only problem here is that I have no idea what I'm talking about, despite having the transformer and packaging in my possession. Good to know we have an expert or two available, though. Anyhow, I don't regret sharing my misfortune with the group. If it saves a piece of iron or old radio because someone picks it up instead of having it shipped, it's a good thing. You can count on your excellent packing skills and sometimes we have no choice. But the law of averages will catch up with you, eventually. Re: [AMRadio] Photos of Damaged Mod Iron
This discussion with UPS or whatever is worthy of the trash box. It seems that every so often, the same folks get on their hobby horse and start a thread about shipping. I often wonder how Yaesu, Kenwood, MFJ, etc. can send their products to their happy owners without damage. It's all in the packing. When Collins Radio Company shipped their 516F-2 power supply in their cabinet, they used block of wood wedged inside the cabinet. I advise anyone shipping a 516F-2 to use the same technique or else ship separately. Incidentally, these blocks of plywood were discussed in an early issue of the Collins Journal. The shipper is at fault here, no doubt > about it. If you can pick it up, do so. ~ Todd, KA1KAQ __ AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

That's getting close to flaming a member of our group without any real evidence. I've had my share of items destroyed by UPS in particular. There is absolutely no need for this sort of handling. I have actually witnessed UPS terminal workers getting so "pissed" that a box was so heavy, they will see how far they can toss it. I figure that in this day in time, Fed-Ex is likely learning some bad habits from UPS. Use DHL guys. Right now it's the only way to ship this stuff. I disagree. The package was only 40 pounds and the packing looked more than adequate. It was double boxed with solid foam between the two boxes and between the transformer and the inner box. It was bolted to a sturdy piece of wood that would allow for no movement inside the box, which was shattered from the abuse. The way this package was treated it would have been damaged if it had been in a solid wooden box. I've done business with Gary and his packing is excellent. I received a transformer back from him a few months ago that weighed in the 20 pound range and it was packed the same as this one and made it without a scratch.
