[amsat-bb] Mystery bird, RS30 Yubilieiny system and beacon decode

2009-09-19 Thread andy thomas
For a summary of information on RS-30 Yubileiny please see my pages at:

http://sites.google.com/site/andythomasorg/amateur-satellites/rs-30-yubileiny

or follow the links to this page from

http://www.andythomas.eu

This refers to original material from Kaluga anticpating a beacon frequency of
435.353 which was not used last year. Obviously it's switchable.

I have not checked the keps for RS30 for some time but I remember they were
hard to find. Are we sure the mystery bird isn't RS-30?

[amsat-bb] No working keps for rs-30?

2009-09-19 Thread andy thomas
I can't get any working keps for rs-30 into satpc32, it just crashes after what
looks like an iterative calculation that doesn't work.

This is true for the RS-30 keps today at:

http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/keps/current/nasabare.txt

and for the YUBILEINY keps (same satellite) just uploaded onto the bb.

I assume that either there is something fundamentally wrong with the keps from
whatever source, or that the orbit falls outside that scanned by satpc32.

any thoughts, guys?

Modify the celestrak.sqf file and add the line below
http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/tle-new.txt
Save it and go to 'update keps' and klick on that link and chose update.
That chose the tle-new.txt in the satelite menu and add the satellites you
want.

I always wondered what they had on RS-27 - Baumanetz-175 - which was lost in

Hi All,

Just for curiosity I would like to know why the AMSAT WSR-Weekly Satellite

including AO40 while long time ago the Keps for AO40 has been removed
from the AMSAT Orbital Elements for OSCAR Satellites sent from WA5QDG

There is someone that time to time is listening for a possible AO40

All of that information is available to you, just in 2 separate locations.
The sat name, launch date, frequency/mode, and keps are all at the
amsat.orgwebsite, and the activity can be found at
oscar.dcarr.org. As far as getting the information updated on these sites
with the new satellite, you must remember that they are both volunteer run,
and the updates have to fit in the schedule of the volunteers who run the
sites.

[amsat-bb] A432-20T AXIAL RADIATION???

2009-09-19 Thread Luc Leblanc

I want to thank's Glenn AA5PK who provide me with the antenna manual. When
reading it i discover something new "axial radiation" the
matching line can be made for LHCP and RHCP using RG-59 and RG-58 combination
for delay/matching lines and two RG-59 for delay/matching
lines to produce this "axial radiation"? Is this gives both horizontal and
vertical polarization at the same time? If it's the case it's
could be a way to counteract the polarization change eg; having to manually
rotate the antenna. Just note they don't called it
"polarization" but "axial radiation"

Google give me a lot of return but all related to helical, helix antenna as
this one:

http://books.google.ca/books?id=J4YcUA-rxJoC&pg=PA128&lpg=PA128&dq=antenna+axial+radiation&source=bl&ots=JtTANyGfs-
&sig=KS6GlYQASby8PGijm8DRZ5TefDQ&hl=en&ei=kpW0Stu7FdPelAeo96zvDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10#v=onepage&q=antenna%20axial%20radia
tion&f=false

That's what i like in the hamfest you always stumble on odd things this antenna
matching harness is made for axial radiation just hope they
are not harmful like the gamma rays on humans :)

[amsat-bb] ITAR sucks

2009-09-19 Thread Bob McGwier
I am sure no American firm participated.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/26/world/asia/26rocket.html?ref=space

We are shooting ourselves right in the derrière with ITAR. I am also
certain White House is much too preoccupied with other things to deal
with it.

As proof that ITAR has completely outlived its usefulness, I give this
example:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/science/space/30india.html?ref=space

India, denied access to nearly all of our space technology here in the
US and even put on denied access lists, simply goes around us and helps
other nations build technical capabilities and then orbits the moon with
a probe. Our involvement? Continued shooting our industries and
technical status in the derrière.

Hi Luc,VE2DWE

Two RG-59 are to produce only the matching between two 50 ohm antennas in
parallel and a 50 ohm feed line but not delay is generated so that the axial
radiation is a linearly polarized wave.

> Is this gives both horizontal and vertical polarization at the same time?

The horizontal and vertical polarizations are both present but they are
two components that combines each the other to generate a resultant wich
is 1.41 greater in amplitude and this combination of two components and one
resultant at the same time is called axial radiation.
If you mount the elements in X configuration the above resultant can be
a vector horizontal or vertical depending on how you have oriented the arms
of the gamma match.
If you mount the elements in a + configuration the above resultant can be
a vector at 45° or 135° depending on how you have oriented the arms of
the gamma match.
Following the schematic diagram in the manual for axial radiation you get
at the same time a vertical and a horizontal components while the resultant
as per Pitagora theorem is oriented at 45°

> If it's the case it's could be a way to counteract the polarization change
> eg; having to manually rotate the antenna. Just note they don't called it
> "polarization" but "axial radiation"

In the axial radiation the maximum radiated power lies in the resultant
vector wich is the amplitude of a componenent vector multiplied by 1.41

In conclusion the axial radiation is a way to get at the same time two
crossed linear polarization components with a resultant linear radiation
in between shifted by 45° or 135° wich amplitude is 1.41 time greater.

[amsat-bb] G5500 Question

2009-09-19 Thread Randy
Thanks for everyones replies to my questions.
Have another. The azimuth meter shows an area from
360 deg to 90 Degress. Mine seems to be spot on at
180 degrees and 90 degrees, assume its good at other
Settings, however, it does not go all the way to the 90 degrees
Past 360, only to 45 degrees.. Is there something I could have
Don't wrong setting it up?

Oh .. Other question was .. Well confirming.. That I should
Balance the weight on the elevation rotor so its even weight loading?

Hi Luc, VE2DWE

When we refere to helical antennas the radiation is called axial mode of
radiation and can be obtained if the circunference of a turn in ranging from
0.8 to 1.5 wavelenght with a pitch angle between each turns of 12°
In this case the helix antenna radiates from the reflector in a direction
long the boom.
With different circunferences and pich angles the helix antenna radiates in
a direction perpendicular to the boom and this is called normal mode of
radiation.

Read ANTENNAS by John Kraus edition 1950 chapter-7 the helical antennas
Sec.7-13 page 206

By the way the above radiation has nothig to do with the axial radiation of
your A432-20T

[amsat-bb] Re: ITAR sucks

2009-09-19 Thread Rocky Jones

A very good friend of mine was on a Russian submarine a few years ago for a
missile launch (they have a setup with submarine launched missiles to put
satellites in orbit).

The Russians let him take pictures every where in the "control
room"...including the Garmin GPS receivers.

With what the last administration let the PRC get away with in the name of
making the Dreamliner...ITAR is a big joke.

[amsat-bb] WD9EWK from DM23vx/DM24va today

2009-09-19 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Hi!

This was a good day out in western Arizona. I worked 6 different
passes from the DM23/DM24 grid boundary (two on each of the 3 FM
satellites), scouted out another location closer to the Colorado
River still in Arizona for this grid boundary, and logged a total
of 60 QSOs with stations from central Mexico to western Canada and
all across the USA.

The spot I stopped at was approximately 11 miles/17.7km southeast
of Parker AZ, north of the intersection of Arizona routes 72 and
95 in La Paz County. The coordinates are 34 0.00 N 114 12.925 W
(this should work for Google Earth or Google Maps). I had parked
away from those two state highways on the side of the paved road
running north across railroad tracks to a dead end, thinking I
would be out of the way and not attract attention from the law
enforcement. After my recent experience at DM31 near the Mexican
border 2 weekends ago (a couple of encounters with US Border Patrol
agents), I should not have been surprised to see a state trooper
pay me a visit this afternoon.

I left Phoenix around 9am (1600 UTC), and had lots of time to make
the drive out to that spot. Instead of taking a direct route to
there, which would have taken about 2.5 hours, I went a little
further west and drove through the Colorado River Indian Reservation
along the east side of the Colorado River. There was another spot
on the DM23/DM24 boundary I could have worked from, without returning
to where I stopped last year and worked from this boundary. After
stopping for fuel and lunch, I went out to the spot I wanted to work
from. It took a few minutes to get the GPS reading to show 34
degrees North, but once that was done I waited for the first AO-27
pass at 2051 UTC.

The first AO-27 pass to the east is usually a good one to work
stations all over North America. It was a good one once again,
except for a brief interruption. I was able to work the first
2 minutes or so, before an Arizona state trooper stopped by and
asked if I was having car problems. Apparently someone driving
along one of those two state highways called the highway patrol
to report my "breakdown". Once I told the trooper I didn't have
a breakdown and that I was working the radio away from civilization
out there, he drove away - and I resumed working stations. A
total of 16 stations were worked in about 6 of the 7 minutes on
that pass.

Before the second AO-27 pass, I drove back to Parker to get some
snacks and take pictures at the Colorado River. The western AO-27
pass at 2232 UTC brought 6 more QSOs. Unfortunately, this pass was
interrupted by an Echolink node somewhere in the western US using
145.850 MHz as its frequency. I never heard the node ID itself,
but did hear one call of the station using the node. I have my
recording from this pass and the others I worked out there, so I
can go back and get the call I heard and hope that the ham has an
e-mail address. Maybe that ham will tell me which Echolink node
he was using at that time.

A few minutes after that AO-27 pass, I had a shallow northeastern
SO-50 pass at 2252 UTC, with a maximum elevation of 6 degrees. I
worked 7 stations in 5 minutes on that pass, a nice surprise. Then
I had the first of the AO-51 passes at 2333 UTC, a 12-degree pass
to the east. Fifteen QSOs logged, with stations in Mexico and all
over the US.

The last two passes, an SO-50 pass at 0028 UTC followed by an
AO-51 pass at 0111 UTC, had 8 QSOs each. By the time the AO-51
pass wrapped up, I disassembled my station and drove back home.
For a trip that I didn't give a lot of advance notice about,
and having worked from DM23/DM24 last year, this turned out to
be a good day. I know I worked some calls for the first time
today, and hopefully there will be a second QSO with them when
I'm operating in or around Phoenix in the near future.

If anyone wants a QSL card for a QSO - or QSOs - made with
WD9EWK out in DM23/DM24, please e-mail me directly with the
details of each QSO. If you're in the log, I'll send you a
card. No need to send me a QSL card or SASE. I will need
to make new QSL cards for this stop, since my previous trip
to the DM23/DM24 boundary was in California. I hope to do
that in the coming week.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and worked me from out there
in western Arizona. 73!

[amsat-bb] satellite demonstration on Monday (21 September) evening

2009-09-19 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Hi!

On Monday evening, 21 September 2009, I will give an on-air
demonstration on AO-51's 145.920/435.300 MHz transponder for
the Tri-City Amateur Radio Association of Goodyear AZ before
their monthly meeting. I will use the pass that starts at
6.29pm MST (0129 UTC Tuesday) for the demonstration, operating
as WD9EWK.

To help make this demonstration a success, the club moved
their meeting location to a different location with a better
view of the western sky - the City of Goodyear building at
145th Avenue and Van Buren Street. This building is south
of the I-10 freeway, west of Litchfield Road (I-10 exit 128)
in grid DM33. After the demonstration, the club will have
its monthly meeting starting around 7.30pm. During the
meeting, I will give a presentation related to satellite
operating and AMSAT.

If you are able to work that AO-51 pass Monday evening, please
feel free to call me and be a part of the demonstration. Thanks
in advance, and 73!

Are these RF modules classified as ITAR or as Dual Use ?
If they are Dual Use, the EAR De Minimis rule applies, which means that
if the price of the components is less than 10% of the total price of
the payload, no export licences are required for the Mini-Circuits US
manufacturer.
