[amsat-bb] Re: FT-817 charge?

2010-06-25 Thread Dave-K7DAA
Bob:

Quick answer in case you haven't been able to download a manual:

- Press the "F" function key.
- Turn the selector dial on the lower left until you see "CHG" on the
left-hand side of the menu.
- Tap the "A" key briefly to turn on the charger function (there will
be an arrow by it: >CHG
- Turn the radio off--this is important! The charger only works when
the radio is off.
- If you were successful, you'll see the TX/RX light turn orange, and
you'll see a timer countdown on the display.

- To cancel the charge function prematurely, just go the the "CHG"
function again on the display and tap the "A" key.

73 and happy Field Day,

Dave - K7DAA

In any case, googling "ft-817 manual" is bound to give results. I've
found Google handy for locating both user and service manuals.

[amsat-bb] Finally my first HO-68 contacts

2010-06-25 Thread Patrick Farcon
I had to share for the excitement was wonderful. I am usually unable to work
many satellite passes of any kind during the week but by chance on the train
ride home from work I noticed an 81 degree pass of HO-68 at its peak
elevation this evening. I had tried before to make contacts on this
satellite unsuccessfully and so far I have only tried FM. But with this pass
so close to overhead I looked up what mode HO-68 would be in and in fact it
was to be in FM mode at that time. So for the first time I decided to try a
pass of a satellite at night and was overwhelmed to hear such clear signals.
Receiving others was easier than getting the proper az/el combinations for
uplink. Listening to my downlink helped immensely. I was absolutely floored
that my first contact on HO-68 was YV1RDX from Venezuella. About 20 mins
later and a few confirmed contacts I was so thrilled to have finally done it
that I rushed to download the recording before the batteries that were low
could possibly run out. I have only been working the satellites since about
April or so and especially since antenna restrictions limit my activities. I
am so hooked on this facet of the hobby and I can¹t believe it took about 17
years to get started! It really doesn¹t in fact take much...just two HT, an
Arrow II antenna, a compass, a watch, and a digital recorder. Thanks to all
that I made contact with and hope to see you all on the satellites soon!

I believe the manual is available as a downloadable file on Yaesu's website.
Check page 11 for details on setting up the radio for charging.

Once you get the hang of finding your own signal, it's a delight to use the
FT 817. I have two of them and I prefer the linear transponder birds over
the FM repeaters.

The FT-817 appears to be a popular rig among satellite users of the fm
birds. As they a all mode rigs I wonder how well they would work for a
linear transponder set up? Rigs for that use are a little hard to come by.
I am hoping to move in that direction some time. However it kind of needs to
be portable as I am surrounded by trees at my house.

Must say now that I got the hang of working LEO's I am having fun no.

OK, thanks! For the time it was on last night, it was working well without
needing that PL tone. There were only 5 or 6 stations on that 0310 UTC
pass, and all were able to get through and make QSOs while I was able
to hear the strong downlink.

Have you heard anything about a schedule for the weekend?

The Sumbandila team asked that we only request passes while the satellite is

[amsat-bb] AMSAT-UK Colloquium, Guildford, Surrey, UK - 31 July - 1 AUG 2010

2010-06-25 Thread Jim List
The 2010 Colloquium will follow the same format as last year, and will be
held again at the Holiday Inn in Guildford.

The formal programme will be held on Sat and Sun 31st Jul and 1st Aug. The
presentations will start on Sat 31st Jul at 10am in the Clandon suite (same
room as last year).

Last year, quite a few delegates arrived on Friday afternoon/evening and we
held an impromptu social gathering away from the hotel. We plan to do the
same this year, and also hold a beginners session on Friday afternoon,
probably starting at approx 4pm.

All the 'normal' events will be there, eg Saturday night Gala dinner, AMSAT
Shop, GB4FUN, auction, raffle, etc, etc.

All bookings and payments MUST BE MADE direct to the hotel, and you are
advised to book early, as the hotel will only reserve accommodation for us
for a limited period. The prices are the same as last year, ie £128, which
includes attendance at the presentations, overnight accommodation on Sat
night, the Sat Gala dinner, breakfast on Sunday morning, and unlimited tea
and coffee during the two days.

There is also a two day package, same as above, but with accommodation on
Friday night and breakfast on Sat morning in addition. The cost of this
package is £193. If you do not wish to stay overnight in the hotel, the
there is a day package for £25 per day (£10 on Friday). Cost of Gala dinner
on Sat on its own, £20. B and B for Sunday night £75. (None of the above
packages/prices include lunch).

All bookings and payments must be made with the hotel. Please contact Emily
Morris in the Business Centre on +44 (0) 1483 784437 emily.mor...@ihg.com.

We are in the process of putting together the programme, and Dave Johnson,
G4DPZ, has kindly agreed to do this again this year. Please consider
contributing a presentation or some form of demonstration, etc. Dave can be
contacted at dave.john...@blackpepper.co.ukthis e-mail address is being
protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

This next Colloquium will be our 25th, so please support this event, and
help us celebrate our 25th anniversary! For those who can remember that far
back, it seems a long time since Harrow School, where, I think, the first
one was held?? Anyone got any photographs of early events? It would be great
to have some on show at this year's event? Please email me if you can
contribute.

You can keep up to date with the latest arrangements and news, by checking
http://www.uk.amsat.org/content/view/704/283/

I, and the rest of the AMSAT-UK committee, look forward to seeing you there.
