[amsat-bb] ISS QSOs through voice or digipeater for LOTW

2011-05-19 Thread Patrick STODDARD (WD9EWK/VA7EWK)
Hi!

Since I haven't seen an answer posted to your question from earlier,
here goes. Yes, QSOs between two stations on the ground through the
ISS is acceptable for LOTW. Use the satellite name "ARISS" for the
ISS, as shown in the LOTW FAQ:

https://p1k.arrl.org/lotw/faq

(all the way at the bottom of the page)

To clarify, I was referring to contacts relayed via ISS either through the
digipeater or the voice repeater.

The most simple and direct thing to do in many aspects of life: Just ask!

And, if a reasonable and respectful request, you usually get what you want.

Just my opinion, of course. I may be wrong.

If you had bothered to read my ENTIRE email, you would've seen that I made
these same points regarding copyrights and recommended that the party go to
both the Google and N2YO websites and make certain that was acceptable.

As it turns out, there are a number of widgets on the N2YO website that are
available and as you state, it's highly likely that N2YO will set you up
with exactly what you are looking for. All you have to do is ask!

That is called "stealing" another's work.

SEND N2YO AN EMAIL - and ask him for what you would like. What is wrong with
doing that?

I had sent him a small donation earlier this year. And he created a CUSTOM

He is approachable. He answers polite email messages. He is a ham. He SHOULD

UNLESS, of course, he plainly states that his works are free to the world,

[amsat-bb] My First Satellite Contacts

2011-05-19 Thread Ted
Ben,

1. if you use HRD Logbook, you need to input the satellite name and indicate
'propagation' as 'satellite' on that tab. Name must be exact name of sat
including hyphen: AO-51 not ao51. Not doing this will not pick up the
contact in LoTW.

2. Always use most current version of HRD. (I think HRD is the best overall
CAT program as it blends all your needs into 1 program - others will
disagree) and the price is right ! (there is a HRD Group on Yahoo Groups
that is helpful or you can look in the HRD forums for an answer)

3. There is a LoTW tab in the current version of HRD Logbook. If you
highlight an entry and click the LoTW tab it will prompt you through the
process. If you have a log page open, you can hold the 'ctrl' key down and
highlight multiple entries. Or you can export your log and upload the entire
log each time. I have been uploading on a weekly basis, usually on a Monday
(after a contest or weekend sat passes)

4. QSL cards are often a budget issue. My personal choice for best quality
and the ability to work with you on your own design is RUSPRINT (Google it)
Darryl will customize the back side of the card for sat contacts (look at
the back of K8YSE's card for example of a layout)

5. It is customary to include SASE. Ask the other guy - look at his QRZ.com
page). The frustration is that not all sat folks will return a card, even
with a SASE, but that is part of the game . Now that LoTW has a VUCC, you
could rely solely on that, but it may not happen in your lifetime depending
on your age.

Good hunting, Ted K7TRK

Hi Nick K5QXJ

AMSAT-NA has much more than approximately 4000 members !
Look at the following message signed from Rick Tejera K7TEJ
AMSAT member 38452

So raise the dues $20 a year and by only year 1 you have appoximately
$769040..a good donation to AMSAT-DL for P3E ! !
Only one HEO satellite would get us several hours of coverage a day
all over the globe or I am wrong ?

Hi Everyone,

I was contacted by a local ham recently who'd like to find a good home
for a sat antenna currently located at their emergency comms site.
The antenna appears to be a M-Squared 149T-CP14 circular polarized
antenna. It has the following measured specs: Boom 118” (9’ 10”),
Driven elements (2): about 37.5”, Reflectors (2): about 39”, Other
Elements – range about 35 to 34”. The spec sheet for this antenna
indicates it has 10.3 dBi gain and a frequency range of 148-150 MHz
(yes, this is outside the 2m ham band).

http://m2inc.com/products/commercial/136r149tcp14.html

It's been at a fixed az/el position on an office bldg roof for a while
but is reportedly in great shape. They don't use the antenna anymore,
so he'd like to know whether anyone in the satellite community would
be interested in this one. Contact me off-list if you're interested
and I'll put you in touch!

Hi Dave, KB5WIA

The above antenna 149T-CP14 has been designed for the ATS
Advance Technological Satellite use into the band 148-150 MHz
and so of no interest for the Amateur Radio Satellites.
