[amsat-bb] Re: Three towers at NASA launch site

2011-06-11 Thread Jeff Yanko
Here's something to think about. All through the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo
and Space shuttle programs (most of the space shuttle program) there was
never additional or off pad lightning protection. The support structure was
the lightning rod and with many points of contact with the wet sandy soil
near the ocean. That part of Florida is the lightning capital of the world
and they knew what protection was required. Now you have to ask yourself,
after 50 years of placing man and unmanned spacecraft into orbit, why the
additional lightning protection when we're cutting back on launches?

Our manned program will be out of service for at least 10 years and unmanned
will only be a handful or just a bit more per year.

[amsat-bb] Club outing

2011-06-11 Thread P.H.
The Mid-Ulster amateur radio club will be (hopefully) active today on
several satellites including SSB between the hours of 10am and 5pm
with the callsign MN0VFW/p operating from the historic ex RAF Long
Kesh (1941-1971) and ex HMP Maze site, just outside Lisburn in Co
Antrim, Northern Ireland

Information including QSL info on QRZ.com

This will be the first time the club has operated satellite /p and
probably the only time this historic site will be activated.

If you hear us, please give us a call :-)

[amsat-bb] Pass predictor on amsat.org

2011-06-11 Thread Helmuth Kump
A huge "thank you" to whoever turbocharged the pass predictor on
amsat.org's web site, which I depend on for pass information.

Requesting the next 50 passes of a given sat used to take about 20
seconds to process. Now it returns in about one second!

To the person(s) responsible for this upgrade: great job, and thank you!

Congratulations to Chris, KC0YBM, for achieving his
Satellite VUCC Award #215!

I had my first contact with Chris back in April 2009.
Since that time he has given me 6 more new grids and operated
from many others. Chris didn't have a portable setup to take
on the road so he purchased an inverter so he could run his
120vac radio in the car! This is a great example of ham
ingenuity; find a way to get it done, no matter what roadblocks
appear in front of you.

Again, congratulations Chris. I hope to work you in many more
new grids in the future!

The AMSAT.ORG computer has been upgraded and moved to a new location (still on
the UCSD campus). The new location required that a new IP address be assigned.
The transition should theoretically be seamless, but some users may have
trouble until their network's DNS servers take notice of the update.

Unless your network admin has done something unusual, any problems should clear
up by themselves within a few days at most.

Please report any ongoing problems to me (kb...@amsat.org or p...@mustbeart.com
if the problem prevents email from getting through to amsat.org).

2011-06-11 Thread Stan, W1LE
Hello Will,

I would consider re-tapping to the next size larger with a SAE thread,
then add SAE machine screws or..
solder directly to the stripped terminal after removing the metric
machine screw.

I infrequently use these terminals, rather I have a short pigtail with a
connector.

ARISSat-1 Reception Challenge

ARISSat-1 is scheduled for deployment from the ISS in July. It has a
composite VHF downlink that will easily fit into the FUNcube Dongle
receive spectrum. The telemetry is 1000 bps BPSK and can, of course,
also be received with a normal SSB 2 metre receiver.

The expected signal levels from ARISSat should be similar to those we
expect from FUNcube itself (and also eventually from UKube) and the
team are keen to discover what will be the minimum and best type of
antennas for schools to use with a FCD. Therefore user experience with
the ARISSat signals will be very valuable in making this determination.

To encourage everyone to receive ARISSat signals we are offering a FUN
reward for listeners!

There are a number of categories for this challenge including:

1. The first FCD user, from each continent, who can post a spectrum
recording of the received signal together with evidence of decoding
the data using the ARISSat software and of sending it to the ARISSat
data warehouse.

2. The first non-FCD user, from each continent, who can provide evidence
of having decoded the signals and of sending it to the ARISSat data
warehouse.

3. The listener, using a FCD or not, who can demonstrate satisfactory
reception of the telemetry in the same ways as described above,
using
the "smallest" possible receive antenna. The actual closing date for
this part of the challenge will be announced later.

4. All other entrants who can demonstrate that they have been having
FUN!

Please submit your "entries", including your location, station details
(including FCD serial number where applicable), postal address and
reports
to g0aukamsat.org.
