This is old, old stuff. The backstory to is is that it's an *American* device,
not Chinese, and it was done that way to disguise fitting a more modern
capacitor into a vintage amplifier.

I can't remember why they went with 2200μF instead of 6800μF - possibly the guy
that did it felt that 2200μF was adequate. It was over a decade ago when I
first saw it along with the writeup ;-)

Unfortunately, counterfeit parts are flooding the market, especially parts
in limited supply. Some components may be painted and stamped with the
choice of a difficult to obtain component.

I normally do the decapsulating operation in my old

[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat-1 status message

2011-09-05 Thread Greg D.

Given that we have no battery, is there any use for the low and emergency power
modes? Can they be disabled? If the solar panels can provide the minimum
power to keep things alive, even in worst case angles (can they?), then having
the spacecraft act so skittishly is kind of annoying.

[amsat-bb] ARISSatTLM under Wine?

2011-09-05 Thread Greg D.

Has anyone had any success running ARISSatTLM on Linux under Wine?

It seems to install ok (I'm using Crossover Office), but when I launch it I see
the briefest glimpse of a telemetry screen, and then it goes away (exits or
crashes). No log files that I can find for what it didn't like.

If it matters, I'm running OpenSuSE 11.1 / KDE 3.5 on a 3.2 GHz Pentium-4 HT.

Thanks,

Hi Dick!

Thanks for collecting and forwarding data from ARISSat-1.

Emergency mode is entered when the power management software thinks the
battery is dangerously low. It reduces the frequency of telemetry to
one 30 second period every 5 and a half minutes or so, and turns off
unnecessary loads otherwise. Evidence suggests our battery has failed
"open", so the software must have taken a sample when the solar panels
were at a poor angle with respect to the sun.

Hi Nick,
in the last three years ITAMSAT IO-26 has been in MBL mode, that is in safe
minimum telemetry mode.
Following the confirmation from an AMSAT-NA team that the receivers are
still working and a few attempts to reload the high level operational code
(IHT), the spacecraft was returned to this mode.
After 18 years from launch (on the 26th of September 1993) battery, solar
panels and all subsystems seem to be in fair shape. Mike DK3WN has written a
great software to decode the MBL telemetry and all reception reports are
welcome!

[amsat-bb] Satellite Activity Logger being Pulled?

2011-09-05 Thread Ellis Foley

Return Mail to wa1...@yahoo.com
Back In June Bob In NJ. the provider of all the "Logger" pages ( Which I
understand he does out of pocket on his own) said that the Satellite logger
page was not being used enough, and that to save space on the system his was
going to pull it.This is something provided here in the gud old USA. sad to
watch if fall to other entities.Hence the adage "Use it or lose it" my 2 cents
worth. irreguardless of the particulars of the situation,it still remains to be
lost,if not used. My 2 cents worth.

[amsat-bb] Radio hams tune in to space airwaves

2011-09-05 Thread Trevor .
John Heath G7HIA has written an article about amateur radio space
communications for the October edition of the British Interplanetary Society
magazine Spaceflight.

The Spaceflight description says:
"Radio amateurs have always been keen to exploit new means of communication and
John Heath [G7HIA] provides a fascinating insight into how satellite technology
has transformed the world of the radio ham soon after the launch of Sputnik
right up to the present day."

The article covers the FUNcube satellite, ARISSat, GB4FUN and the FUNcube
Dongle SDR.

[amsat-bb] R: IO-26

2011-09-05 Thread Alberto E. Zagni
Hi Nick,
in the last three years ITAMSAT IO-26 has been in MBL mode, that is in safe
minimum telemetry mode.
Mike DK3WN has written a
great software to decode the MBL telemetry and all reception reports are
welcome!
