[amsat-bb] Re: VO-52 Update

2012-03-14 Thread Mani VU2WMY

Hi Domenico,
I'm aware of the difference in the orbit numbers between us and
ISTRAC. In fact the orbit number mentioned by Mr. Parimalarangan is
for our internal reference, which I should have deleted.

You are right, the orbit number is 37095 which we follow. There shall
be no doubt about the date and time, as it is correct and it is March
14th & 14:00 UT.

Thanks for pointing that difference and I appreciate your keen
observation. I update the kep elements all most every day and thanks
for posting the latest keps.

[amsat-bb] Good To Hear VO-52 is Back

2012-03-14 Thread Keith O'Brien
March 14 1437 UTC

Big signal from VO-52 this local morning. The Dutch transponder was very strong
from AOS to LOS at a max elevation of 14 Degrees here in West Central Florida.

I was able to reduce my output to as low as it would go, 2.7 watts SSB,  and
still able to hear myself very well. The CW beacon sounded a little wobbly,
probably from others running higher power.

CW beacon Text : HI HI HI THIS IS VU SAT WITH THE DUTCH MODE UV TRANSPONDER
MADE BY WILLIAM LEIJENAAR 73 DE PE1RAH

Congrats to all those responsible for getting VO-52 back on again. It sound

[amsat-bb] Dutch Transponder on-baord HAMSAT VO-52 'Turned On'

2012-03-14 Thread Mani VU2WMY

Dear Friends,
I take this opportunity to sincerely thank each and every user and
well wishers, who have been following and monitoring closely all those
events and activities that followed since the interruption on 28th
February 2012.

Thanks for all those encouraging and supporting expressions!

The initial telemetry reports indicated all the crucial and critical
parameters to be normal and satisfactory and we do hope 'HAMSAT VO-52'
would be available with much stronger power. The overall spacecraft
health is in 'Excellent Condition' and all that we need to do is to
monitor the transponder parameters.

14:05 UT on 14 March was a moment of great satisfaction and joy to all
of us here in bringing 'HAMSAT VO-52'back to life. It also gives us
great pleasure to note that 'HAMSAT VO-52'from India/ISRO has a earned
a name in the history of 'Amateur Radio Satellites'.

On behalf of everyone, I take this opportunity to sincerely thank
particularly, Mr. Parimalarangan-Operations Director for his hard work
and great efforts besides his exemplary technical competence and
skills exhibited in recovering back 'HAMSAT VO-52'.

Also my sincere thanks to Mission Director Mr. R. Suresh and the
entire 'HAMSAT VO-52' Mission Management and Project teams for all the
support, encouragement and recognition provided to 'Amateur Radio
World'.

My Good wishes to VO-52 and the transponders on-board for a 'Healthy
and Long Life'.

My Good wishes & Greetings, once again to Williams PE1RAH.

Hi Jerry,

Yes, you need a sideband radio. Try 145868 KHz in USB mode .

[amsat-bb] AMSAT Table - Stuart FL Hamfest 3/17

2012-03-14 Thread John Papay

N3YKF and K8YSE will have an AMSAT table
at the Stuart Florida Hamfest on 3/17. Now
that we have VO-52 back we will have more
opportunities to demo satellites. Norm will
be operating his portable station and I will
likely have my Remote Station operating via a
3G Hotspot. Weather predictions are good so
we should have a good turnout. Please give us
a call if you hear us on the birds!

[amsat-bb] VO-52 loud and clear on orbit Nr 37097 over Europe

2012-03-14 Thread i8cvs
Hi All,

The VO-52 Dutch transponder was working very well on the ascending
orbit Nr 37097 with max elevation of about 30° from my JN70ES

Recorded the whole orbit on magnetic tape with recorder REVOX-A77

Worked only IW6OVD and IZ8JHD and made a long chat with those
Ham friends.

My uplink power was 30 watt on a 10 turns Helix antenna RHCP

No other SSB stations were available on the passband because
probably they were not informed about the recovery of VO-52

At the end of the orbit at 2° elevation only two stations were active
from Russia.

The transponder modulation is OK and very linear even if a
comparative report with the Indian transponder can be available
only in the next few days.

Signal strength: CW Beacon is very clear without chirps and signals
linearity on the passband seems to be comparable with that of the
Indian Transponder

The best polarization in 2 meters downlink is LHCP as with
experienced with the Indian Transponder.(same antennas)

The lession learned (in my opinion) from AMSAT-India and ISRO is
the following one:

"If you want a satellite to communicate it should be simple
and have only one mode of operation and redundant trasponders".

Critical report: ISRO and AMSAT-India should have more than
only one control station.

Congratulations to ISRO, to AMSAT-India and to William PE1RAH

[amsat-bb] VO52 work great

2012-03-14 Thread Eugenio Piluso
Hi All,
during the last orbit (37097) over the Europe I have QSO with i8CVS and iZ7HZR.
The signal in downlink are very strong S6-8. As RX front end I use an SSB
electronic transverter LT2S and 4+4 RHCP yagi (home made). For the uplink 6+6
LHCP yagi (home made) and 50W.
I completely agree with the comments of the i8cvs about the Amsat-India and
ISRO lesson.

Thank you again to the Indian dear friend

[amsat-bb] Interfacing Signal Link to FT726

2012-03-14 Thread Steven O'Neal

All,

I have a FT726 that I would like to interface to a Signal Link external Sound
card. I'd rather avoid the mic jack/stereo out connectors and wire direct into
the radio.

Does anyone have a link to where someone has done the deed and or can email me
instructions off list.

Thanks

[amsat-bb] Isabel Island, Grid DL71 March 16-21 on Satellites

2012-03-14 Thread JoAnne Maenpaa
Hello Everyone,

I noticed that this DXpedition would be halfway over if we waited for the
weekend ANS news cycle:

+ A team of 10 operators, from the Aguas-Calientes Amateur Radio
Club will activate Isabel Island, grid DL71, using the callsign
XF1AA. The planned dates are March 16-21. Ismael, XE1AY, is one
of the operators and is active on the satellites. If you should
hear Ismael on the birds, please give him the air time to work
as many as he can. (OPDX Bulletin 1050 & K8YSE)

[amsat-bb] Space@VT

2012-03-14 Thread Robert McGwier
Our new Space at Virginia Tech building is really going up fast and should
be open by June. I have really been taken aback (pleasantly surprised) by
how much investment Virginia and Virginia Tech is putting into Space
engineering and science. This facility is 20,000 square feet /1800 sq.
meter, clean rooms, and my student Zach Leffke (KJ4QLP) has constructed a
functional ground station, built GnuRadio apps to demodulate telemetry,
runs the facility remotely, send video, audio, and telemetry decodings to
remote locations. He demonstrated this capability at the Wireless
Innovation Forum last fall to our sponsor who was wowed.

The new facility ground station will be built out starting this summer
after the building opens (again, work done by Zach and other students).

http://www.space.vt.edu/shows the building (for now) and the following
link shows the current faculty affiliates and their interests

http://www.space.vt.edu/people/index.html

Troy Henderson and I have a dynamics and constellation modeling student we
share. Bailey, Henderson, Fish, Earle, and I have funded satellite
construction on the same launcher with AMSAT Fox and others proposed.

We are having fun down here in the Appalachian mountains!

[amsat-bb] Re: Dutch Transponder on-baord HAMSAT VO-52 'Turned On'

2012-03-14 Thread Greg D

Hi Mani,

Congratulations on the recovery of VO-52; it's great to have our friend
back.

I am curious if ISRO will be issuing some sort of report on what
happened. I understand that they will have limits on what they can say,
but if there is something the satellite community can learn from this,
it would be good to not miss the opportunity.

Dear HAMSAT VO-52 users,
The commands to 'Turn On' the transponder # 2 (Dutch transponder, made
by Williams PE1RAH) on-board HAMSAT VO-52 was successfully sent during

The sent commands were successfully received, acknowledged and
confirmed by the telemetry. Subsequently, the transponder # 2 is now
'ON' and Williams CW message beacon was heard again after a gap of
approximately 6 years & 4 months.

The beacon signal was heard loud and strong here at Bangalore.
