Subject: live ham radio webcast

We are 24 hours away from our live dayton hamvention broadcast.  Help us spread
the word to

anyone interested.?

This will be our 10 th year to broadcast Dayton Hamvention . Our viewers have
grown to

about 50,000 in over 150 countries during the last Hamvention broadcast.
Hamvention is May 20-22 but we actually go live  TOMORROW at 1300 UTC Wed May
16th as we

pull out of our driveway and broadcast the 550 mile drive live.
The video site is http://w5kub.com and we are on 365 days a year when not
broadcasting a

live ham event. Over the years we have had special guests on the broadcasts.

We have over $8000 in prizes to give out again this year to lucky viewers.
Some of our

prizes are weather stations, Heil headsets, Comet CAA-500 antenna analyzers,
AlphaAmp watt

meters, D-star radios, yasue HTs, TenTec desk mics, G5RV antennas, and much
more.  After

hamvention, we will be broadcasting our 550 mile trip back to Memphis on Sunday
afternoon.

We have installed a new Ka Band internet satellite uplink this year in our
fleamarket space

so we will be broadcasting High Def video this year. This is a first for us.

Log into the chat room and talk directly to us, ask questions to those we are
interviewing

or just chat with each other.

Dayton Hamvention is Fri, Sat, Sun May 18,18,20

we also will broadcast the 550 mile drive (10 Hours) from Memphis, Tn to Dayton
Ohio

Wednesday may 16

We will be setting up our fleamarket space and the satellite uplink on Thursday
May 17 and

will broadcast that.

We will start giving out prizes on Wed morning.

go to http://w5kub.com for all the fun

also join us on our facebook broadcast page at

[amsat-bb] Learning about AMSAT in Dayton

2012-05-15 Thread Steve May
I have been interested in AMSAT operation for awhile but have not even
began to put together a station for satellite work. I will be attending the
Dayton Hamvention this weekend, and in doing so I am hoping to learn enough
about satellite work to get on the air over the next few weeks.

With the large collection of AMSAT experts in Dayton, my question is what
the group would recommend to a newcomer to try to get out of Dayton in
learning some satellite basics. Should I make sure to go to the forum? Are
there going to be demonstrations on software and station setup? Should I
mainly try to make in-person resource contacts?

Mainly, where should I focus my efforts this weekend? I am hoping to learn
as much as possible and hope to finally get involved in satellite
operations in the next few months.

Thanks in advance,

Steve, W5IEM

[amsat-bb] Re: Learning about AMSAT in Dayton

2012-05-15 Thread Stephen E. Belter
Steve,

My recommendation is that you attend at least one of the satellite demos for an
FM satellite (AO-27 or SO-50) *and* an analog satellite (AO-7, FO-29, or
VO-52). The techniques and contacts are different for FM and SSB; you will
learn from both types of contacts. Note that the ISS and HO-68 passes will be
listening only, and won't involve 2-way QSOs. Take the time to talk with
Keith, Roger and Mark who will be running the demonstrations just outside of
the entrance to the Ball Arena.

I would also encourage you to attend the AMSAT Forum, but if your primary goal
is to learn about assembling a station and operating the sats, the
demonstrations are your best starting point.

I'd also suggest you buy a copy of Gould's revised Getting Started with Amateur
Satellites book. It will be for sale at the AMSAT booth and is a great source
of information for those questions you forget to ask at the demos. There will
also be demonstrations of SatPC32 and MacDoppler at the AMSAT booth, so you can
see how the tracking software works.

Here is the tentative schedule for the AMSAT demonstrations at Dayton this year:

[amsat-bb] L band uplink frequencies

2012-05-15 Thread g0mrf

Hi all.

I am trying to determine an FM uplink frequency in L band which is suitable for
most countries.

As I understand it, 1269 is the traditional frequency of choice, but with
Galileo now being deployed and some local EIRP restrictions here in Europe,
that may no longer be the best choice.

In searching the AMSAT archive I saw several messages about the P3E 'galileo
alternative' at 1260 and a message saying that there is an EIRP limit in
Germany below 1263MHz. - Is that still accurate? The final suggestion from
those posts was 1263.520

Ultimately some frequency agility to avoid radars etc may be needed, but as
with all projects, a starting point is needed. Any thoughts?

Many thanks

[amsat-bb] Re: Learning about AMSAT in Dayton

2012-05-15 Thread Mark L. Hammond
Amen to this, Steve (both Steves actually ;) )

This year, we have a clear focus on trying to get youth and first time
operators ON THE AIR. We want you to come to the microphone and make
a contact!!Between passes, there is plenty of time for equipment
review, discussions, inspections, etc.The SSB and FM birds are
quite different, but once you have the gear up and running, the
transition is pretty straight forward.

Thanks to Keith and Roger, I understand we'll have differing levels of
equipment again (from very portable/simple, to stuff more complex
resembling a fixed station with computer control of radio, etc.) So
check it out!

Come out and get your feet wet (well, figuratively. We are hoping for
no rain :0 ) Bring the kids...or grab some on the way...hi hi.

See you later this week!

2012-05-15 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Steve,

The answer to your questions is YES. For starting out, as Drew suggested,
see as many passes worked in the demo area as you can. Likewise, at the
AMSAT booth you can pick up some good intro books, and talk about software,
hardware, etc with experienced operators. If everybody seems too busy to
talk, swing back around in a few minutes. The Forum is oriented toward "big
picture" issues rather than operational nuts and volts. You can get an idea
how things are now, and how they will be different in a few years.

[amsat-bb] Harbor Freight Items

2012-05-15 Thread Clint Bradford
Two items on the Harbor freight weekly newspaper ad jumped out at me today ...

The first is one of those "jump starter" batteries in a plastic case with
handle, jumper cables, meter, et al. This one is probably a 10-12AH sealed lead
acid one. Its case is not "sonic welded" - so we can get inside and "improve"
the panel with whatever jacks we want (grin). Here's the instruction manual for
more description - $33.99 this week ...

http://manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/38000-38999/38391.pdf

The second item is a "mechanic's roller seat." I can see my 12V marine battery
on its bottom platform ... a mounted radio or two on the top (might replace
that "padded seat" with a simple piece of shelving), and have a "rolling" cart
for a portable setup. On sale for $17.99 this week.

[amsat-bb] Satellite Solar Power (indoors)

2012-05-15 Thread Bob Bruninga
You would be amazed at how little power a solar panel gets in the classroom or
the lab.

I measure it. It is one half of one percent of full sun (0.5%). Practically
nothing. Here are two examples:

1) We have a flight unit of the original TRANSIT satellite in our sun lit
wall-of-glass lobby. It has about 8000 1 inch square solar cells. We built a
small "packet" link and a small SSTV camera so we could command it and watch
when refreshments were being served in the lobby. Even with all those solar
cells, and full indoor lighting and indirect window lighting, the power
available is only about 0.1 watt. We had to back off and only have it come on
when there was full sun on the arrays in the late afternoon, all the other time
there was no power to run it. Even with the eight 1'x6'solar panels.

2) Laugh at this one and BUYER BEWARE! check out www.solaroadtechnologies.com.
They claim "Their products are undoubtedly the best solar/storage products
available." They are located in Towson, Maryland. And complete hogwash. They
sell you solar panels for your desk and your cubical to collect free energy
from the office lighting. Yes, not even enough to light a single LED. 0.5% of
outdoor sun is nothing.

Modern day adage: Just because there is light, and just because it spins, does
not mean there is any useful power!

This is precisely why the WA8SME CubeSat simulators run off alkaline batteries!

Here is a video demonstrating a feature I hoped to turn into a

it would be quite useful when giving demos.

The video is HD and looks best viewed full screen in 720p.

[amsat-bb] Kindle pass predictions

2012-05-15 Thread JHBRTOO
Hi Gang,
Has anyone been successful getting the AMSAT predictions on their Kindle?
Mine may be one of the first and as such the inner workings may be too
"experimental" but i do get some really funky results- the pass page comes up,
looks genuine, but a lot of the data is really off the wall- like the times
are from some grid on Mars or ??

W2RS was apparently successful but don't know if his is a later version of
the Kindle

Any help anyone

Thanks in advance
