[amsat-bb] New AO7 world distance record

2012-07-02 Thread Bill Dzurilla
I am pleased to report that Wyatt AC0RA and I broke the AO7 world record today
with a GPS-measured 7849km QSO between JN88 and EN31 at 0955Z. Recordings of
the 40 second QSO will be posted to my web page, see www.qsl.net/nz5n (I tried
to attach but it seems attachments not allowed on this board).

Wyatt did all the hard work by waking up at 3am, driving to a hill an hour away
from his home, setting up his station, and working me before sunrise.  It
appears that an even longer distance is attainable, and Wyatt is looking for a
suitable place from which we can try before I leave Slovakia in mid-July.

My working conditions are an FT847, 2 x 10 element yagi on 2m with SP2000
preamp, and an 8 element yagi for 70cm.

Feel free to email me for a sked.

2012-07-02 Thread Bob Bruninga
>> I have tried ... but I don't see any response from the ISS...

> It's temporarily on 437.550
> You also have to use a path like: ARISS,SGATE,WIDE2-2

That path adds 14 extra bytes to a packet almost doubling the length and
therefore cutting throughput in half by doubling congestion. The only path
necessary is simply VIA ARISS.

In most countries there are numerous IGates listening to the downlink and
making sure the packets get to www.ariss.net and APRS.FI without the added
path baggage.

Some have suggested adding the SGATE,WIDE2-2 on the end to force these
packets from the SPACE frequency 145.825 over to the national APRS channel,
but there they just collide with terrestrial traffic. I personally don't
see the benefit considering the 50% overhead cost on the very precious
145.825 space freq.

Real rovers and portables can appreciate Paul's situation. I just
wrapped up logging efforts for my last ten days on the road. It is
amazing the various conditions in terrain, weather, and even the hams
on a pass that makes /R and /P such a thrill. Sometimes pushing the
"rover" envelope not only gives out rare grid squares, it is a test of
skill, and sometimes record-setting!

[amsat-bb] Teachers' Institute 2--Space in the Classroom

2012-07-02 Thread Matt Severin
Hi all,

Next week, July 9-12, I will be instructing the ARRL Teachers' Institute
2 in Dayton, OH. We'll have 8 teachers learning how to set up and operate
ground stations that they will be able to take back to their schools to use
in their classrooms. Support from ARRL ETP donors, the Dayton Amateur
Radio Association, and Yaesu have made this endeavor possible.

We will be operating from about 1200 utc to 2000 utc each day, give or take
a few hours. Our primary amateur radio satellites will be AO27, SO50,
FO29, and VO52, plus we will try to capture data and telemetry from the
many cubesats currently operating. Hopefully you'll have a moment to say
hello and work a few of the teachers in my group.

[amsat-bb] U-110 Rotor Setup

2012-07-02 Thread Joel Black
I am looking for an old article regarding the use of two U-110 rotors
for satellite operations.

I have gone through all my old references and cannot find what I'm
looking for.

Basically, it was a setup using two U-110's (or it could have been two
U-100's). The homemade controller used either toggle or rocker switches
and had a digital readout of AZ/EL using DVOM's. As far as I remember,
it was all manual. I remember seeing this in the back of some
publication, but I cannot find it.

Does anyone have any inkling of and idea what I'm talking about?

Sorry I didn't make my DE K2E 13 colonies' sked earlier today. I had an
audio out failure with my TS-B2000. We worked a VO-52 pass this morning with
Elizabeth kb3wsw/K2M and had no problems. When we tried to work the pass' in
DE we had no normal audio output from the Kenwood with the external speaker
or headphones. Odd thing is that the HF side of the radio's audio remained
normal. I tried pre amp in or out ATT was off, everything stupid seemed to
be in order. We will be home here in NJ working as K2I, and might be able to
try and work some DE passes on Wednesday on the way back to PA. The B2000 is
going on the bench tomorrow AM, we shall see...

[amsat-bb] Re: U-110 Rotor Setup

2012-07-02 Thread Andy Kellner
Joel,
I am not sure if thats exactly what u are looking for, but here is some
material which might help you further. The setup is not strictly for 2 x u110
rotors, but can be adapted for other
simple non-feedback rotors (radio shack etc.) as well.:

Original idea, setup and software from K8DAV: http://www.k8dav.com/u100_info.htm

KC2PCR's implementation with 2 U 110 rotors:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHTEHUlqilk

I took K8DAV's software and extended it a bit, so it works fine over the
parallel port (with no basic stamp controller) and a Radio Shack rotor for AZ
and a homebrew rotor for EL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-nBYvPYOy4

Some pictures: http://evolution2enterprises.com/sat/sat.html

Feel free to email me if you have questions.

Cheers,
Andy - VK4HHH

Subject: [amsat-bb] U-110 Rotor Setup

I am looking for an old article regarding the use of two U-110 rotors for
satellite operations.

I have gone through all my old references and cannot find what I'm looking for.

Basically, it was a setup using two U-110's (or it could have been two
U-100's).  The homemade controller used either toggle or rocker switches and
had a digital readout of AZ/EL using DVOM's.  As far as I remember, it was all
manual.  I remember seeing this in the back of some publication, but I cannot
find it.

Does anyone have any inkling of and idea what I'm talking about?

Joel - W4JBB

2012-07-02 Thread Greg Dolkas
I'm pretty sure this isn't the article you were thinking of, but I made my
own Az/El rotor from a U-110 and a regular Ham-type rotor, with a Basic
Stamp-based controller. Has both manual and automatic modes. See the
pictures and links to the design documentation at the top of:

Good luck,

[amsat-bb] CO6CBF/p EL93

2012-07-02 Thread Hector, CO6CBF

Hi all,

I know it is short notice!

Tomorrow morning, I will be in a work trip to Matanzas province in EL93. I
will try to operate on the 1828z AO-27 pass and if I find a place with a
decent horizon view, I will try on the 2009z pass also.

If anyone need this grid confirmed, please drop me an email and I will look
for you.

73!

Hector, CO6CBF
