Re: [amsat-bb] ISS and QSL Card Requests
A voice contact with an orbiting astronaut is an extraordinary event. And I have run into a few operators who had no idea that they could apply for and receive a QSL card for their efforts. As always, you can't just answer the question in a direct manner and put the 'Clint twist' on it. How do I know any numbers? I made a phone call to the ARRL manager who has the numbers. Like I always do, I use the best-available information Why would you even care what the percentage is? Was it a life changing event once you got the numbers? So - What, exactly, is the problem posting the procedure to obtain a QSL card from an ISS contact? I don't recall saying there was a problem with posting the QSL procedure. Once again the 'Clint twist' Clint posts an informative, upbeat, factually correct, on-topic post. And those without as good as Rolodex as I possess can't stand it. And in closing you finish it up like a true Narcissist! Dave-KB1PVH ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Re: [amsat-bb] ARISS
Kelley, One of the other problems is all the unattended beacons that are firing away every 30 seconds which make it extremely difficult for people that are at the radio trying to make actual contacts. The only reason I wanted to see a posting of my callsign somewhere was to see that it was indeed working. I think I'll change my unproto to RS0ISS, seems most of the stations I hear have it set that way. 3. I do have my TNC set to PASSALL. I do see a fair amount of packet activity. I'm just not getting anything in the way of a response. I'll just keep at it and see what happens. During the pass, I issue a converse command and send something like Hi from Kelley EN25. If I see another station I send something like Hi W0ABC this is Kelley W0RK. Is this the right format? I assume that trying to connect to another station isn't the right way? Thanks for the very informative response JoAnne. Perhaps I'll see you on the bird. Kelley - WØRK On 6/8/2014 9:21 AM, JoAnne Maenpaa wrote: Hi Kelley, If you are able to copy stations on the 145.825 MHz downlink you have your packet setup working. If you add more antenna you'll find you can copy a pass starting sooner and lasting longer. Otherwise, if you hear with the vertical antenna it is working OK. I use the USA 144.390 MHz APRS beacon frequency for testing my packet receive setups. I'm near Chicago so there is always an APRS brap-brap-brappity-brap around. In rural areas you may need to wait a while. But, if your packet setup works on terrestrial signals it is ready for the ISS. You can do testing without waiting for an ISS pass if you use 144.390. Then tune back up 145.825 and it should be ready. But (there is always a but) ... 1. Getting on the list and/or map at www.ariss.net depends on the downlink also being heard by an earth station setup to SATGATE its received packets. There seem to be fewer SATGATE stations around than in years previously. You don't have to do anything special to get SATGATE'd. Your UNPROTO CQ VIA ARISS (CQ VIA RS0ISS works also) is all you need to do. But there has to be a SATGATE station in range. 2. ARISS has a weaker signal than before. It is still a good signal but in the past their higher power used to make the packet bursts able to be copied on an HT and rubber duck. Nowadays an external antenna is necessary (which you have). The ARISS downlink signal experiences shadowing from the ISS structure. Sometimes this contributes to the weaker downlink which means fewer stations hearing you ... or, SATGATES hearing you. 3. Setting PASSALL to ON helps you copy packets that don't complete the checksum. Many times there is enough information in there for human eyes to pick out. Still, the SATGATES will need to receive the entire packet with checksum to relay you. This is just another technique for troubleshooting. PASSALL is available on the hardware TNC configurations but I haven't found a soundcard packet program which supports it. 4. PCSAT NO-44 can digipeat on 145.825 if it has a good charge from its solar panels. Set your unproto to CQ VIA W3ADO-1. The signal from NO-44 is definitely weaker than the ISS. It often shuts down after a few packets because of power issues. On a good day it is another satellite to add to your list. The packet log and map for NO-44 is at http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi The same lack of SATGATE stations issue also applies here. Sometimes it may be a couple of days until someone makes it through and on rare passes several stations are successful. -- 73 de JoAnne K9JKM k9...@amsat.org Editor, AMSAT Journal ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] G5500/LVB Tracker question
For the second time in three years, the my az rotor on my G5500 has stopped working. I bought it brand new and I'm using an Easy Rotor Controller for an interface. I noticed that when the rotor is swinging around after reaching its stop that every time SatPC32 sends an updated position to it, it will stop for about a second and then start moving again. I'm not sure if this repeated start-stop is causing the problem. Does the LVB Tracker do the same thing? Thanks Dave-KB1PVH Sent from my Verizon Wireless Droid RAZR ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 rotor question
I had this question posted to me, and I can't seem to figure out if it is possible. .I want my rotator to stop at about 85 Deg elevation and not go to 90 , 100 , 110 etc etc but to rotate on its asmith by 180 deg and then start to drop elevation from 85 Deg.. I know that the rotor interface unit, ERC can be limited via it's service tool software, but I wasn't sure how SatPC32 would react to the interface unit limiting it. [amsat-bb] UT1FG QSLs
Has anyone other than KD8KSN had success getting grids confirmed? Back in the end of July I had a couple of successful emails with Yuri's qsl manager giving me details on what to send, I provided a list of all QSOs in an email along with sending a list along with a QSL card and some $ for return postage. It has been four months since sending all the info and nothing, not even a response to my 4 emails asking if info had been received. It would be nice to get those 31 grids confirmed. It's not necessary for a rotor interface to have a big box, display, and control switches. The interface really only needs to contain A/D and D/A converters. All displays and controls can be implemented virtually on the computer's screen. Is there a simple and cheap USB interface for the G-5500 rotor? Something small and simple like FODtrack, but with a USB port? I'm aware of WinRotor USB, but nobody in North America seems to use it. I am having a problem hearing the downlink of any SSB satellites on 440. snip It is 21:10 UTC and I just finished trying to work FO-29 from CN87 (20:59 to 21:17), and again no luck. I sent my call out on 145.950, but nothing back. Checked the ARRL satellite tracking site and it appears I have the correct keps installed. I went outside and checked the bearing of the antenna. Seems ok. FO-29 is currently off. Since it was the only current SSB/CW satellite with a 70cm downlink, we will have to hope that FO-29 can be reactivated in the near future. Otherwise, there's VO-52 with a 2m downlink and AO-7 with its alternating 2m and 10m downlinks if you're trying to work SSB, or you can try for the transponder on ARISSat-1 (70cm up/2m down). If you want to work FM, you have AO-51 as well as AO-27 (afternoon passes only) and SO-50 that are available - all with 70cm downlinks. 73! Jeff, Instead of complaining here on the BB, why don't you email the stations that are doing it and offer some suggestions to improve their operating practices and maybe point them to John K8YSE's website. [amsat-bb] SatPC32 setup
I just added a new computer to the shack and have SatPC32 all set and running fine. My problem is that during setup, I chose 360 degrees for azimuth instead of 450 and can't change it now. When I go into the rotor setup menu, I can change everything else except for the max azimuth. I had this problem before and can't remember how I fixed it.
