I will be conducting an ARRL Teachers Institute at Mississippi State
University from December 19-22. The afternoon of Dec 20 (with the 21st as a
backup) I will be covering using space-borne systems in the classroom. A
major part of that unit is demonstrating ham satellite contacts, and I could
use your help. If you could give a listen for us on the AO27 pass that (I
think.I'll confirm once I am at the location and test things out) will go
over EM42 on Dec 20th at around 1435 EST and give a shout-out to the
teachers. I will be using the call W1AW/5 for the pass. If you'd like a
QSL for the contact, send an e-mail to me and I'll make sure you get one.

If you would like to see what else is covered during the Teachers Institute,
check it out at:
http://www.arrl.org/teachers-institute-on-wireless-technology.

The satellite demonstrations are always an eye-opening experience for the
teachers, and the TI demonstrations would not be possible without your
support and patience.

It is with a heavy heart I report that AO-51 has ceased transmission and is not
responding to commands. The last telemetry data indicated that the third of six
batteries was approaching failure to short, and observations indicate the
voltage from three cells is insufficient to power the UHF transmitters. The IHU
may continue to be operative. Initial tests with the S band transmitter were
also not positive, although more attempts are in order. We have tried leaving
the satellite in an expected state where if voltages climb high enough, the
435.150 transmitter may possibly be heard.

The command team will regularly attempt communications with the satellite over
the coming months (and years). There is always the possibility that a cell will
open and we could once again talk to our friend while illuminated. Thanks to
all who helped fund, design, build, launch, command, and operate AO-51. It's 7
year mission has been extraordinary. Please support AMSAT's Fox-1 project, and
other AMSAT projects worldwide with your time and money.

Last night KP4WK and myself (KP4TR) listened to Arissat when overhead in Puerto
Rico last night. In our case we both live in Florida and was out of reach at
that time, but we each own a remotely operated stations at our parents home.
This gives us the advantage of listening and maybe working arissat when outside
our reach over the Atlantic.

My remote radio in San Juan has a computer with SSTV capability so on the
weekend ill try to capture some images as it flies over puerto rico.

Thanks to everyone for all of your responses. It looks like I have

I just finished giving my "How to Work Amateur Satellites with Low Power"
presentation to a classroom in Southern Illinois.

Club president Gregg Sperling, KB9E, contacted me a few weeks ago, asking if I
could speak at the March meeting of his Southern Illinois University Amateur
Radio Club in Carbondale, IL.

NO - I didn't use up my wife's frequent flyer miles. We did it via Skype. Audio
AND video.

I prepared a .pdf file ahead of time, tailored to the club (I always have a
couple club-related trivia questions ... and always have the club's grid square
id'd in the program) - and emailed it ahead of time to the tech guy. All slides
were numbered, so we could stay in sync. The club used a computer/projector to
show the slideshow, and I was able to see and hear the classroom attendees -
and they could see and hear me - via Skype.

Skype is almost "full duplex," so I could hear comments and questions ... and I
could see when a hand raised up for a question. It really worked out well!

So, presenters: I guess we are no longer limited to "hundred mile radii"
restrictions for our shows! It wasn't as effective as actually going to a site,
demo'ing a FM bird, THEN presenting. But it sure got the word out to a club
that I couldn't physically get to!

We had a great time!

Subject: [amsat-bb] Milliwatt 2-way contact

Hey everyone,

During the 2045-2046 UTC portion of the AO-27 pass over the western U.S.
yesterday (11 November), Sawson (KG6NUB) and I completed a two-way contact with
handheld stations. Each of us transmitted 50mW (.05-watt) out. Sawson used a
Kenwood TH-D7 with an Arrow, and I used a Yaesu VX-7R with an Elk. Including
the published, nominal transmitter power of AO-27 (500mW), our "power budget"
for the contact was 600mW, or .6-watt.

We didn't use a specially scheduled QRP pair of frequencies to complete the
contact. We were in the middle of all the other stations working the pass, and
were able to complete a 2-way contact using milliwatt power. I am grateful to
know and work so many truly good operators on the satellites.. They try to give
others some space, and it's because of their collective approach that many
passes still are good for milliwatt power.

I especially hope our friends with AMSAT-South Africa will note and pass along
this information in advance of their Activity Weekend, which is coming up in a
couple of days. Their goal is to stimulate interest in and activity on all of
the amateur satellites among South African amateurs. Our FM satellites are
definitely reachable with handheld stations - even those running 1/10 the power
of the satellite itself.

73 to all,

Tim - N3TL
