  Dear Friends,

With heavy heart, I sadly convey, that our little angel ‘HAMSAT VO-52’
would no more be able to offer her services to the ‘Amateur Radio
Fraternity. HAMSAT VO-52 succumbed in Space on 11th July 2014, while she
was on her 49,675th orbit, due to the failure of on-board lithium ion
batteries that have met their end of life.

Although her desires were to be at work with other systems and
sub-systems working normal as per the latest telemetry received, the
on-board computer recurring to ‘Reset’ mode due to the failure of batteries
is preventing her to do so. Hence, it is decided not to expect any more
meaningful and reliable services from HAMSAT VO-52.

Since 11th July, every best possible effort has been put in by the
spacecraft controllers here in ISTRAC Bangalore to revive her back to life
and to help her with work load, so she won’t be swamped when she returns,
but with no luck. Though it is hard, the HAMSAT VO-52 designers and
controllers insist that the time has come to let the little angel free in
space to go drifting on her own from their care and custody.

Thus, today 21st July 2014, ISRO have decommissioned 'HAMSAT-VO52'
 officially.

We all here in ISRO do definitely hope that ‘HAMSAT VO-52’ worked
tirelessly and was a good friend to the ‘Amateur Radio Fraternity’ around
the World. We are sure that HAMSAT was loved by all who worked through her.
Though, we are deeply saddened by the loss of HAMSAT VO-52, but she will
never be forgotten and far from our hearts, minds and memories.

HAMSAT VO-52 will always be remembered by all of us here in ISRO as one
of the greatest satellites of ours.

Dear ‘HAMSAT’, looking at the sky, we all say ‘Good Bye’ to you. You’ll
be greatly missed. Rest in Peace.

Pasted below is the message from Mr. R. Suresh, Mission Director:

HAMSAT, the first small satellite by ISRO has been Decommissioned after
nearly a decade of service to the World Ham community.

A true masterpiece among small satellites, designed for one year mission
life, but exceeded all expectations by serving for almost 10 years. A truly
autonomous satellite, with “Zero maintenance“ in terms of Mission
operations, it provided a springboard to test many new concepts such as
BMU. LI-ion based power system, automatic Spin rate control and Auto SAOC
for maintaining the Satellite attitude without any ground commanding.

HAMSAT known as “OSCAR-52” among the Amateur HAM operators has been
very popular because of its high sensitivity receiver and strong
transmitter. Indian Radio Amateurs on many occasions conveyed to us that
they have been greatly honored to share the adulations showered on ISRO and
INDIA by the International Radio Amateur for gifting this wonderful
 satellite HAMSAT.

I take this opportunity to applaud the HAMSAT teams at ISAC, ISTRAC and

Hi,

AMSAT can open a Project at KICKSTARTER in technology tag.
https://www.kickstarter.com/discover/categories/technology

I saw a lot of project getting 300, 400% more than originally goal. Some of
then looks like a stupid idea, but that´s no matter they get the found´s,
and what make no sense for me can be a good deal to others :)

Already donated via PAYPAL today, but in my opinion would be great if
AMSAT-NA use this way also to get founds for the project!

Please think about it, I believe that donations don´t need to come only
from amateur radio satellite operators, but also from everyone who likes
electronics, science and technology.

Ah, because launches are scarce and expensive, and (re)developing even

It's great to have universities looking to partner, but what do they

one flying soon, so that we can learn how well they work and apply those

We already know how well they'll work because we've done the same thing

how we could accomplish so much more with our (currently) limited

I noticed that after the last Dnepr launch, it's upper stage was raised
to an apogee of 1454 km, putting it in a 1454 km x 609 km orbit with a
97.9 degree inclination, in order to avoid collision with any of the 37
 satellites it released.

There are, however, no legally binding requirements regarding debris
 mitigation.

International agreement requires that objects in orbits lower than 2000 km
must exit that region within 25 years after end of mission. Objects in
 orbits
above 2000 km can remain there for longer than 25 years in a disposal
 orbit,
but only a few missions have the excess propulsion capacity to reach that
orbit. Some US Government missions have disposed of upper stages to a
 higher
orbit to avoid the need to issue a Notice to Airmen concerning the falling
debris hazard. At least one polar orbiting weather satellite launch sent
 the
upper stage on an Earth escape trajectory for disposal.

It would seem that the Dnepr orbit is still too low to satisfy the
 international requirement.

In the case of amateur transponder satellites they can be assumed to have
 an
operation lifetime of 40+ years (think OSCAR-7), as I recall debris
 mitigation
suggests re-entry within 25 years of the end of mission. For amateur
 transponder
satellites this might imply 65 years in orbit.

NASA is considering a revision to this policy to specify a total lifetime
 in
LEO of no more than 30 years regardless of mission lifetime.

Other interesting facts from Scott Hull's July 1 colloquium at NASA Goddard
 include:

 1. There are about 22,000 objects larger than 10 centimeters in the NORAD
database, an estimated 500,000 objects between 1 and 10 centimeters which
 are
too small to track, and millions of objects less than one centimeter. The
Chinese Fengyun 1C disintegration in 2007 produced about 2850 trackable
 pieces
of debris. The new S-band space fence will be capable of tracking objects
larger than 5 centimeters when it becomes operational in 2018.

 2. There are about 4000 dead satellites on orbit, and about 1000 active
 satellites.

 3. The debris population has peaks at 750, 900 and 1400 km. You would have
 to
go to Saturn to find a worse debris environment than that of a 750 km Low
Earth Orbit. Science missions can be difficult when you live in a
 minefield.

 4. Most spacecraft disintegrations are caused by battery and pressure
 vessel
explosions. Nickel hydrogen batteries are most susceptible to explosion but
NiCd and lithium ion batteries can also explode. A lithium ion battery must
NEVER be recharged after it has been fully drained. Rocket bodies left in
 GTO
are subject to explosion when the perigee height dips low enough to begin
atmospheric heating, which can cause remaining fuel in the tanks to
 explode.
Modern mission design requires that batteries be disconnected from solar
arrays and fully discharged and pressure tanks vented to space at the end
 of
 the satellite mission.

 5. Space is still pretty big. We have been lucky so far. Statistics predict
another eight or nine major collisions in the next 40 years with just the
 current population of debris.

 6. The movie Gravity did have a science adviser, and they did get a few
things right, namely that there were no loud sounds when the debris struck
 the
shuttle, and objects with lower area to mass ratio arrived first.
 Nevertheless
most NASA folks still consider the movie to be a comedy. If you have the
 DVD
there is an additional 20 minute documentary video about orbital debris on
 the
 disk.

Lituanicasat-1 was on for the 1755utc pass over Ohio today. N1PCE
was the only station heard and worked. It's at 310km now so it won't
be up for much longer. Work it while you can.

The next pass starts for EN91 at 1928utc and goes through the middle
of the US. The footprint is not very big but if you are in it, you'll be
able to work it. It fades as it spins but the rate is fairly fast so you
can easily make qso's on it.

Make sure you have the latest keps as they are changing rapidly as the
 bird slows down.

The stuck PTT while running SSTV on ISS has been a known issue since the vox
box was first connected to the TM-D700 in the year 2005. The ISS crew soon
discovered the stuck VOX transmitter issue.
One ISS crewmember left the radio running all night sending SSTV images. The
next morning the radio was excessively hot and would not respond to button
commands until after the radio was “power cycled”.

The Ariss vox box does not have any RF filtering inside the device. The
devices was originally designed to run on its own 9-Volt battery. At the
last minute, it was modified to extract power from the TM-D700. The Ariss vox
box gets its power from the D700 via a special modification to the D700
 transceiver.
The unfiltered power is full of RF energy when the D700 starts transmitting.
The RF energy causes the VOX PTT circuit to get stuck in a transmitting mode
until the Watch dog timer in the D700 times-out and forces the radio back to
 receiving mode.

Marexmg, the organization that supplied the Marex SpaceCam1 SSTV software for
ISS has recommended to ARISS several times to replace the ARISS vox box with
 a stable USB vox box.
ARISS has repeatedly ignored any attempt to correct the problem.

[amsat-bb] Nice video on amateur satellite and supporting space science

2009-10-07 Thread Fabiano Moser
Re- sending.

Take time to watch!
Good Job Henk !

73 Fabiano

 Hello all,

In case you didn't see the announcement about a video produced by Henk,
below is the link. It is a really nice video showing amateur radio
contribution to space science. I plan on using this video when I give
presentations to high school students. I also plan on showing it to my
bosses so I
can get more science missions made available to the amateur radio
community.
These two satellites have been a learning experience. There are some
things I will want to do differently. I enjoyed getting reports from you and
working with you. I want to do it again and it looks like it may happen. We
have another science experiment in proposal and are starting to get some
funding. The mission will be to map the radiation environment in real
time. The trick will be to get the potentially large amount of data down.
9600 baud may not be fast enough. I will try to work something out to stay
within the common amateur radio gear. I may have to switch to KISS mode for
 more compact data.

Also, if anyone has captured any audio, hold on to it. I know one of the
experiments was to try out FX.25. This is an experimental protocol that
wraps forward error correction data around the standard AX.25 packet. This
method allows standard TNCs and software to decode error free packets
while allowing FX.25 decoders to recover AX.25 packets with a few bit
errors. We tried getting the FX.25 software completed but time constraints
have been the issue. Last Friday, we were able to test the FX.25 decoder on
some audio files and were able to recover corrupted packets. Our small
sample showed up to 50% recovery rate. We will be processing more audio
files. Our next step is to make the code available. It runs on linux only.
Our first problem was trying to get access to the raw data stream before any
AX.25 decoder. We were able to find where to tap the raw bit stream in
the soundmodem software and pipe it to our FX.25 decoder program. We will
write up some
documentation and release the software in the next couple weeks. You can
try running your audio files through the software and see if you see any
improvements.

So, next question. How many people are running linux for their ground
station? How many would be interested? We are thinking for the next
satellite to develop a telemetry protocol with forward error correction that
will greatly improve packet decoding. We will target FM modulation since
that
is easier to track and capture. Since we only know how to program in
linux, we would target that platform. Anyone wanting to port to Windows or
Mac is welcomed to our code.

 Ivan

[amsat-bb] Re: AO-7 Mode A

2009-10-02 Thread Fabiano Moser
Hello Pirajá,

AO-7 is fantastic satellite (also also the crew in the sat is
fantastic!...hihi).

I don´t have yet antena for 10m and my dipole to 20m could not hear nothing.

I must find a solution to join AO-7 in MODE A.

Best regards,

 Hello All,

Yesterday, when the AO-7 has radically changed the mode B to mode A, I
noticed that the amount of QSO in mode A increased significantly, we see
in the log of the AO-7. The signals are stronger at 29.450 MHz. Now the
night, I heard stations of PY5LF, PY4ZBZ and especially Joe, K3SZH with
signal 5 / 7 at the end of the orbit, in SSB. Is a wonderful sign in mode
 A. I use a antenna 40 meters of wire and a 3 element yagi. I would like to
invite the users of AO-7 to take this chance that the satellite is giving us
to keep the QSO in mode A, I do not know how long it will last this
 facility.

[amsat-bb] Re: LVB

2009-07-11 Thread Fabiano Moser
Hello Myles,

I have one LVB tracker interface under Yaesu G5500 rotator, is not installed
outside yet, what I have idea to do this weekend, but i can tell you I have
made 1 week tests inside home and I liked very much the precision and
performance under NOVA for Windows.

Easy, no external DC supply needed, and very simple to program and setting
up. LCD show me azimuth and alevation where antena is and where she goes.

I can take photos and sent you this evening.

[amsat-bb] How you do DOPPLER correction in Linear Transponders?

2009-07-02 Thread Fabiano Moser
Dear friends,

We know that some Satellite Operators use diferent system to doppler
control.

For Linear Transponder
1) Adjust uplink and downlink automatic by CAT? (Not always woks, some times
I´m up or down from the computer adjust)
2) Adjust uplink and downlink manual
3) Keep Uplink fixed and adjust only the Downlink frequency.

What is the more indicate method to use?
FT-847 have knob to adjust Uplink without change downlink VFO, and I´m using
it to keep my voice in downlink at same downlink much I can.

But I know some operators use fixed uplink.

How you do?
