[amsat-bb] SAT PC 32 question
Hi Folks, I wish to track two satellites (actually FUNcube and UKube) at the same time. The TLM for one is in cubesats.txt and the other is in tle-new.txt. Is there a way of displaying them both in the main window at the same time? When I select one, the other is automatically removed from the list. I have tired copying the tles for one into the other's file, and this works OK, but it rather tedious! The problem might be resolved when the elements for Ukube are included in the cubesats.txt file, but they will appear as A and B on the main display (bottom right hand corner), whereas I would like to display them both on the map simultaneously. Is there a way of doing this? Thanks for any help 73s Jim G3WM ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] AO-73/FUNcube Operations
Hi Folks, Please note that this weekend AO-73/FUNcube will NOT be switched to permanent transponder mode. There have been several requests for it to remain in auto eclipse mode to support various events associated with YOTA. See http://www.ham-yota.eu/ So it will remain on the following schedule: - Full power beacon when in daylight - Low power beacon, plus transponder when in darkness Have a great weekend 73s Jim G3WGM ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] FUNcube / AO-73 Transponder Availability weekend 26/27 April 2014
Hi Folks, The FUNcube Dev team are holding a working meeting over this weekend. We may need the sat to be in 'Normal' mode (ie full power tlm) for some of the time for testing purposes. [amsat-bb] FUNcube/AO-73 Transponder plans for the future
Hi Folks, Following the 48 hour test last weekend, we have concluded that the battery temp does reduce slightly during full time transponder mode, but only by a degree C or so; it remains within specification. Hence we have decided in future to switch the satellite into 'forced eclipse mode', ie full time transponder and low power beacon at weekends. The aim is to significantly increase the availability of the transponder to radio amateurs. We will continue with this plan until further notice. We plan to switch to full time transponder mode during the first suitable pass over the UK on Friday evenings, normally between 19:30 and 22:30 UTC. If for some reason this is not possible, then the switch will be done on the first suitable pass on Saturday, normally between 09:30 and 12:00 UTC. We plan to switch the full time transponder mode off during a suitable pass on Sunday evenings (UK time), which normally occur between 1930 and 22:30 UTC. Again, if this is not possible the switch off will be made on Monday mornings, approx. 09:30 to 12:00 UTC. Do PLEASE NOTE that this schedule is totally reliant on the availability of command stations, who will do their very best to ensure it is maintained. We will not normally announce successful full time transponder mode on/off commands, but if it proves not possible to make one of them, then we will make a note here and on the FUNcube web site at www.funcube.org.uk/news. So please do enjoy the transponder, and use it any time you hear it on. We are always pleased to hear of your activity, so either leave a comment on the website, or email g3wgm -at- amsat.org. The idea being as JoAnne said, the radio part is proven and provides a platform so they can concentrate on their experiments and build a CubeSat that handily just happens to contain a transponder for hams during, or when they are done with, their experiments. Of course if ITAR restrictions are eased or removed, then AMSAT-NA could collaborate with other countries as well and incorporate their experiments as we are doing with our U.S. partners now. snip Thanks. [amsat-bb] FUNcube/AO-73 Transponder Test - Sat 29 Mar 2014
Hi Folks, Results of last weekend's tests: the transponder was maintained ON for two orbits, and we did not see any noticeable fall in battery temperature. We are therefore proposing to repeat the test next Saturday (29 Mar), but leave the transponder on for a longer period. We will switch it on during the first pass over the UK (approx 10:30 UTC) and switch it off during one of the evening passes over UK, the first of which is at approx 20:00 UTC. We are particularly interested to receive TLM when the satellite is coming out of eclipse (ie when it should be at its coldest temp). So reception from suitablely located stations would be very welcome. If you hear the transponder on, please feel free to use it! 73s Jim G3WGM ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AO-73 / FUNcube Full time Transponder Mode (Amateur Mode) Proposed Test Sat 22 Mar
Hi Folks, On 22 Mar, we will be commanding the satellite into transponder mode for one or two orbits so we can assess the effect of lower power being radiated by the sat on the battery temperature. We expect the sat to be put into full time transponder mode (aka amateur mode) during the first morning pass on Sat 22 Mar over the UK, ie at approximately 0930 UTC. We are aware that the on/off timings for the transponder are not now ideal, due to seasonal changes. In the coming months the situation will get worse such that in June the transponder will only be available for very short periods in the Northern Hemisphere. We are therefore planning to alter the schedule such that the transponder is on continuously at weekends, ie after approx 1900 UTC on Fridays, to Sunday evening. This will give radio amateurs a greater opportunity to use the transponder. Unfortunately there is no way of automating this schedule, so its maintenance will rely on the availability of command stations. Before implementing this schedule, it is necessary that we characterise the effect of maintaining transponder mode for long periods of time. We expect that the space craft will be slightly colder than when transmitting at full power, as the heat generated inside the spacecraft by the PA will be less. We are concerned that this lowering of the temperature may bring the battery temp lower than is advisable. Its specification is that it should not be charged if its temperature is below -5 degs, or some damage might be done to the battery. Currently the minimum temperature we see that the battery reaches is approximately -2 degs. If you notice that the transponder is open on 22 Mar, please feel free to use it. Please note that we have learnt from experience that commanding the sat is not an exact science, and that not all commands sent are received by the satellite, probably due to interference. We will announce on AMSAT-BB and on the FUNcube web site (www.funcube.org.uk) the progress of our tests. We would be very grateful if as many listening stations as possible receive the TLM and forward it to the warehouse on Sat 22 Mar. Thank you. 73s Jim, G3WGM ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] AMSAT-UK Colloquium - 2010 31 July - 1 Aug 2010
Hi Folks, This is just to let you know well in advance the dates of the 2010 AMSAT-UK Colloquium. It will be held over the weekend 30 Jul - 1 Aug 2010. The location will be the same as in 2009, ie the Holiday Inn, Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom. (quite close to the University of Surrey) In 2009 there were a significant number of delegates arriving early on Friday, so we are planning to have some form of activity then (even if just social!), also probably in the early evening a 'beginners session'. Details to follow. Meanwhile, please put the dates in your diaries! 73 Jim G3WGM Hon Sec AMSAT-UK ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? [amsat-bb] Use of ICOM 910 for AO-51 L-Band BBS Uplink?
Hi Folks, I would be interested to know if anyone is using an ICOM 910 with the L-Band module for Ao-51 uplink on the BBS? (The optional L-Band unit for the 910 runs 10 watts according to the book). I am particularly interested to know what type/gain of antenna I would need to get a reliable up link. I am planning to use about 20 metres of Ecoflex 10, which will introduce a loss of something like 3 Dbs. I know that the LBand/Digital up link is currently off, just gettting ready for the next 'on' period! 73s Jim G3WGM ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] Re: Lets Fix ISS, Replace ARISS
Miles, It is a shame that the public aren't allowed at the meetings (I've attended before, and they are most interesting). I'm not sure of the reason, but I think that your conclusion that the 'AMSAT Corporation' by which I assume you mean AMSAT-NA wishes to monopolise ARISS may not be true. It was the original ISS partner countries in USA, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada who set up ARISS. I cant remember how many votes each of these ARISS partners are entitled to, but certainly the USA doesnt get a majority vote. (But I acknowledge does a great deal, along with Russia, of the work). At the ARISS-i meetings I've attended, I recall that the delegates from the ISS partner Nations (USA, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada) were the ones votong on the proposals In Europe the member societies of ARRIS-EU are AMSAT-Belgium AMSAT-CT Portugal AMSAT-France AMSAT-Italy AMSAT-SM Sweden AMSAT-UK ARI Italy DARC Germany MARL Malta PZK Poland RAL Lebanon REF-Union France REP Portugal RSGB UK UBA Belgium USKA Switzerland You can see that there are as many National Amateur Radio Societies, as there are AMSAT's. The only way to correct the problem and fix the Amateur Radio educational program is to completely reorganization the current ARISS hardware structure. Under the new ARISS Closed Door policy, only selected members from AMSAT-NA are allowed to participate. This new policy has turned the once open ARISS into a closed door Monopoly controlled by the AMSAT Corporation. Based on the current actions of ARISS and their very poor performance with in-flight hardware I would like to propose a complete reorganization of the ARISS hardware process. Please review the enclosed information. I look forward to discussing the proposal with you are your earliest opportunity. Sincerely G. Best regards 73 Gaston Bertels, ON4WF ARISS Chairman ARISS Reorganization Proposal By Miles Mann June 17, 2009 Rev 1.01 What is ARISS? The goal of ARISS was to create an organization to select, control and coordinate Amateur Radio projects designed for the International Space Station (ISS). The ARISS program would then assist the 16 countries (Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil, USA, member nations of ESA, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), which are supporting the ISS to help choose the best educational Amateur Radio projects for ISS. Each county would have delegate-voting privileges on ARISS and project selection activities. Summary: When Dave Larsen and Miles Mann (MAREX) helped form ARISS in August 1996, one of our goals was to keep Space open for the public and not turn the ISS, into a monopoly controlled by the AMSAT Corporation. We were partially successful. Unfortunately most of the ARISS voting delegation came from AMSAT Corporation representatives from different counties and a few other radio clubs. The newly formed ARISS agreed to allow competing clubs to submit proposals. The MAREX team helped create ARISS, however since the majority of people present were from the AMSAT Corporation, MAREX was not allowed to have any voting privileges. Prior to 2009, ARISS would say that its meetings were open to the public and other clubs were welcome to observer. In 2009 ARISS changed its open

Hi Folks, I just want to say thanks to all the folks who helped me with this. I'm now back up and running with the CAT interface from SATPC32 to my ICOM 910H. In case anyone is wondering; I am pretty certain that what happened is that Celestrak altered the format of their kep files (maybe a couple of months ago, or more), and in particular, changed the format of the sats name. I found I had to change FO-29 to JAS-2 (FO-29) in the Doppler.sql file. The moral of this story is if your CAT interface stops working, check that you doppler.sql file has excatly the same sat name as in the keps file. (I think what confused me, and thats getting easier and easier as the years go by, is that FO-29 appeared in the keps file in brackets.) !! Hi All, In my experience, you dont have to listen to the output channal of a repeater, while transmitting to its input, ie you dont have to hear your own signals coming back through the repeater. BUT you do (ideally) when working through a satellite. Again im my experience, such a radio as Greg has described is called a half duplex one. The big advantage of using a full duplex radio for satellites is that you can check if you are being rebroadcast by the satellite or not, without relying on others to tell you. AMSAT 2009 COLLOQUIUM- URGENT UPDATE Earlier this year AMSAT-UK announced its intention to hold its Annual Colloquium in 2009 at the University of Manchester over the weekend of July 24-26th. Unfortunately it has not proved possible to produce a programme including the food and accommodation at rates that would match or be more economic than those of previous years. Therefore, to ensure the best possible event for the largest number of visitors the venue has been changed to the Holiday Inn Hotel at Guildford - this is very close to the Surrey University where the event has been held previously. The 2009 AMSAT Colloquium will now commence at 10am on Saturday July 25th and close at approximately 4pm on the Sunday. Accommodation will be available, at special rates, on the Saturday evening and also on the Friday and Sunday. The new venue will enable visitors to attend at a significantly lower cost than last year and experience greatly improved accommodation. The two days will be filled with presentations covering all the latest amateur satellite happenings and developments. The new GB4FUN trailer will also be in attendance and available to demonstrate satellite operations. An informal social gathering is planned for those who are able to arrive on the Friday evening. [amsat-bb] Re: Question
And dont forget the antennas on the sattelite. They cant necessarily be optimal. A directional antenna needs a platform, the orientation of which is known and controlled. To do this is space is not trivial; vbarious mechanism exist, gravity gradient boom, megnetostorquing, spinning wheels. Its also expensive and adds complication to the satellitte. Some amateur sats have been stablised, and have used directional antennas successfully, eg AO-40, AO-13, but not only were these costly to build and launch, they also required considerable ground control efforet (globally) to ensure their solar cells we never parrallel to the suns rays. (If that happens, no power=death of the sat). 73 Jim G3WGM -Original Message- From: amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org [mailto:amsat-bb-boun...@amsat.org]on Behalf Of James Duffey Sent: 06 May 2009 03:17 To: d...@mynatt.biz Cc: Amsat BB Subject: [amsat-bb] Re: Question Well more power means more solar cells and bigger batteries. The number of solar cells that one can fit on the outside of a satellite depends on the size of the satellite. More solar cells means a bigger spacecraft or deployable cells. There is a limit to the size of deployable panels and added complexity risks the mission if they should fail. Bigger spacecraft cost more to build and launch. The size of the solar panels determines the battery size. Ideally you want a battery that can be fully charged by the solar cells while in sunlight and maintain its charge to a useful level in eclipse. Bigger batteries weigh more and weight pretty much determines how much a satellite costs, particularly the launch costs. So it pretty much boils down to optimizing the solar panel/battery combination with the size of the spacecraft and the mass lift capability available to us on a launcher. I am not sure what you mean by extraordinary measures to receive, or what satellite you are trying to receive, but the requirements to receive many satellites is modest. Low loss feedline, helps, as do directional antennas and preamps, but these are all available with modest effort, either through building them yourself or purchasing them. - Duffey Okay, time for my stupid question of the week. Why are our sats so low powered? Why don't we have better batteries, solar power systems, or generators? Seems our sats are so low powered they require extraordinary measures to receive.
