Yep, that's what it does. After pressing the F button, press the
appropriate mode button to change what you want. Just tried it on my

I am making an assumption, that may not be the case. I am assuming that
there is a protected location closer to the tower. For example the
tower is next to the garage and the shack is in the house. If that is
the case, what I would do is run the remote control PC at the remote
location, and control it over your LAN with a remote desktop program
such as VNC (http://www.realvnc.com/). That does make the assumption
that you have an extra PC floating around, but for most of us the
question is not IF we have one, but rather which of of the several
should I use... It also assumes that you have a house LAN - although if
you don't, most PCs these days have a network connection already built
in so it would be easy to implement.

(I only have experience with Mirage), they pretty much have gone down

I can only go by mine as a reference. It has OSCAR printed above and
slightly to the right of the large A of WAS. The number is #285 and
dated 30 July 2001. I somehow doubt that it has gone from 285 to 53,981

I guess that would be if you had the slightest interest in digital
satellite operation. Personally I have absolutely ZERO interest in
digital satellite operation, only very little in the single channel FM
birds, a lot more in linear LEO birds, and even more in linear HEO
birds. For the most part, I don't care about DXing, but actually being
able to talk to someone for more than a few minutes is rather nice. I
will admit that I was happy to get Africa confirmed to complete my
Satellite Worked All Continents a few years ago - only to have the ARRL
lose the cards.

I guess that depends on what you are trying to look with. I use Nova
for windows and it will tell how old the keps are for the selected

The 3rd line shows the age of the keps. Yes, those really are 3 1/2
years old...

If you look at a TLE file, the epoch time is the 3rd element in a 2
digit year followed by the 3 digits before the decimal and a bunch after
the decimal point. So in the TLE below, the epoch time was 32.75507474
days into 2006.

Jacob,
They will work, but understand that you will be dealing with a VERY
WEAK signal. In my opinion, not the best for a starter antenna. An
experienced operator who knows what they are getting into, and is
willing (or desiring) the extra challenge can do fine with them. I have
used a set of those loops for mobile operations, but I also have
thousands of satellite QSOs in my log, and I know what I can and cannot
do with them.

I had custom QSL cards printed for satellite operating. You can see
pictures at the URL below. On the satellite card, the box right below
the middle C of my callsign is "Satellite and mode". I printed the
satellite and operating mode - for example: FO-20 V / U. The next box
was the operating mode - for example: SSB. I made no attempt to print
the exact frequency - especially since it changed throughout the contact
(I spent most of my time on the linear birds).

Remember that there are USB over Cat-5 devices that can carry USB much
farther than a native USB. We are using a bunch of them at work. We're
only trying to get about 75 cable feet, but they are supposed to work
much farther than that.

That certainly would not work well here in the USA. That spectrum is

I have not been satellite active for several years (mostly because of no

was fairly new when I stopped operating satellite, but at that time the
general comment from those that were using LOTW was that particularly
for satellite operations, LOTW was such a pain to use, and really did
not support satellite ops without putting in incorrect data (it did not
understand our cross band operation or that there are actually more than
one satellite in use). Maybe someone who is using it currently can
advise if works better for satellite operations now. One of these days
I will get back on the birds, but I do have several thousand satellite
QSOs that I could log from years back if there were really any reason to
do so.

Same here. I stopped using my amsat.org address about a decade ago because it
was so badly spammed. It is still a valid address but it forwards to a
separate address on my mail server. I check it every few days. These days,
most of the spam is in Chinese.

Only reason I keep it at all is because that is the address used on several
very old references that I did and I get E-Mail regarding those now and then.

An interesting idea for getting around the spammers... Almost any of the
autoresponders do block most of the spam, but some legit users will also get
blocked.
