Only WE WISH is moving fast toward earth. Its trace is very similar
to ARISSat-1.
Time line of ARISSat-1 aligns to the five CubeSats deployment date.

[amsat-bb] Five CubeSats altitude

2012-10-28 Thread Masahiro Arai

I'm ploting altitude of five CubeSats which were deployed from ISS.
The results is interesting. First deployment satellites are lower
altitude than laters. I guess this is related to initial velocity at
deployment.

First Deployment
deployment order: #1 WE WISH, #2 RAIKO
  altitude: WE WISH RAIKO

Second Deployment
  deployment order: #1 TechEdSat, #2 F1, #3 FITSAT-1
  altitude: TechEdSat F1 FITSAT-1

I'm also ploating ARISSat-1 on the same chart as its time line align
to the five CubeSats deployment date. The chart shows five CubeSats
have large decay rate than ARISSat-1.

You can see the chart on the following URL.

Thank you for development of ARISSatTLM program.

folder for Windows XP. This is the problem. Japanse Windows XP has no
Dsektop folder! Yes, there is desktop folder on Japanse Windows XP,
but the name is different. It's in Japanse! I made Desktop folder
before install ARISSatTLM V0.50 then ARISSatTLM works fine. I'm not
sure on the Windows 7 or another language Windows.

It may difficult to make Desktop folder for those unfamiliar with
computeres. Would you solve this problem? Change the folder, make
Desktop folder if no existence, or another way...

[amsat-bb] new ISS small satellite deployment system by JAXA

2011-03-08 Thread Masahiro Arai

JAXA announced new ISS small satellite deployment system. The
deployment use Kibo's airlock and robot arm. Kibo is the Japanese
Experiment Module (JEM).

The satelltes deliver to ISS in cushoning bag by supply ship Progress
or HTV. The satellites are equiped on the deployment feature. The
deployment feature is put overboard through the airlock. The robot arm
grabs the deployment feature, set the position and deploy the
satellites.
The deployed satellites reenter about 100 days.

Now, JAXA put out a call for Japanse satellites to demonstrate this
new system. The satellite is 1U, 2U or 3U CubeSat. Total size is 4U.
Tow to four satellites will be selected (eg 1U+3U, 1Ux2+2U, 1Ux4).

Here is the demonstration plan
  May 2011: satellites selection
May 2012: deliver satellites to JAXA
Sep 2012 or later: deployment using the new system

The new system will relax vibration test condition compared to rocket
launch. This will be good news for satellite manufactures.
The new deployment system will make much satellite launch chances.

The press release material is on the JAXA's web site. Sorry, it's in
Japanse.

Thank you for the comment, Mark and Alex.

Next solar eclipse will be seen at 4th Jan, 2011. AO-51 will see the
eclipse near India.

I have recorded the simulation to a video and you can watch it on

I couldn't find any 3d model of AO-51 so I used a model of AO-7 - sorry
for that. Also note that I used TLEs from today to generate orbital
data for Celestia so the time and may not be scientifically accurate.

If you want to run the simulation for yourself, watch from other
angles, etc., you can get Celestia for free from
http://shatters.net/celestia/
You'll need to add the data files for AO-51 in the extras folder;
you can use mine to begin with. There is a .zip file here:

You'll also find the H.264 encoded video there that you are free to

 Hello Masahiro,

Thank you for your message! You have made a great observation, and I
think you are exactly right about the cause of the observed glitches
in the telemetry. Usually at this point in its orbit we would observe
AO-51 charging its batteries at a steady rate from fully illuminated
 panels.

From what I've read from page 43 here:
 http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEpubs/2010/TP214171a.pdf the eclipse
was from 18:15 to 20:52 UTC.Look also at the areas experiencing
 eclipse.

Please be aware that the clock on AO-51 runs fast. It is now about
3 minutes fast, so look at telemetry timestamped from about 18:18
 until 20:55 UTC.

Since the duration of the solar eclipse was 2 hrs 39 min (or 159 mins)
and AO-51 orbits every 100 minutes or so, it could have been affected
 two times.

I've plotted some of the telemetry collected from that period
(telemetry from 1800-2130utc) and posted it here:
 http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/telemetry/ao51/2010WOD/July2010/Wd071100_1800to2130utc_solar_eclipse.xls

If there is a station or two there with excellent L band uplink capabilities
who would like to relay the audio for us, we can do it. Email the ao51-modes

[amsat-bb] Solar Eclipse 22nd July

2009-07-15 Thread Masahiro Arai

Solar eclipse is visible at Asia and Pacific on 22nd July. Very
limited area is able to see total solar eclipse.
Many amateur satellites pass above the solar eclipse area. Electric
power generated by solar cells will show very interesting behavior
under solar eclipse. How about collecting telemetry and ploting solar
cell power condition? Temperature may also show interesting look.

I checked the telemetry transmitting satellite orbit around Japan. The
following satellites pass above solar eclipse area.
  COMPASS-1, FO-29, CO-66, CO-58, DO-64, STARS, PRISM, SOHLA-1, AO-27,
  NO-44
There is something to be said for DO-64 condition. Will DO-64 stop
transmitting telemetry under the solar eclipse?
If AO-27 store telemetry as WOD, WOD shows complete solar eclipse
condition.

Let's try to collect telemtry under solar eclipse!
