Hi David,

Agree with your comments, I am sure many were waiting egarly to hear the
signals from ARRISsat.I think the team must have documented some key
learnings from this which will help during the July launch of the satellite.

 Thanks for the info, the change to https: explains everything. I have just
discovered that I can manually download a compressed file from Space-Track,
extract the text file, and manually update Nova from the text file. Looks
like Celestrack could make that process a lot easier, so I will explore that
next.

 Nova hasn't been upgraded since 2008 ( and it had so many little bugs to
fix !! ) so I'm not going to sit around waiting to see if they put out a new
version.

 Thanks again,

 We are receiving reports that AO-51 appears to be down. Hopefully one

 Eclipses are still getting longer, and the sun angle is getting worse,

 it's that simple...)

 I agree on TV rotors. Its an excellent inexpensive way to get elevation.
The U100/110 is what I use as well and its well suited because you can put
the boom right through the rotor.

 There are some nice pictures of setups using these rotors on this sites:
 http://www.rotorservice.com/press3-alliance.htmlt;- my setup
imitates this one ...
 http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th/
 http://users.wbsnet.org/n0yk/cushcraft.htm
 And there?s a QST article on this in the Dec 1998 issue
 You can even build a controller for computer control but I?m currently
rotating elevation and azimuth manually.

 Hi Marco,

 If you are looking to lash something together (instead of going with a
purpose-built Elevation rotor), I and others have had success with
Television-type rotors that have a through-hole for the mast. Mounted on
their side, they seem to perform very well. Just keep things balanced, and
protected from the weather and they should be happy.

 See:  http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th/

 I used an Alliance U-110. It has performed flawlessly for about 10 years
now.

 Good luck,

[amsat-bb] XW-1 Heard over VU

2009-12-15 Thread Nitin Muttin [VU3TYG]
All,

I heard the beacon of the XW1 during the 16:32 UTC pass on 15th
Dec.VU2BJZ,VU2WMY and VU2GUR also heard the CW beacon. The signals were good
right from AOS to LOS. The CW telemetry said that the beacon RF output power
was 123 mw and the beacon power supply was as 0.65 volts. I used the
telemetry decode application provided by the XW1 team.

Recording of the telemetry signal can be found at
http://vu3tyg.addr.com/XW1/XW1-Beacon.zip and the screen shot of the
decoding application showing the data at
http://vu3tyg.addr.com/XW1/xw-1data.GIF

Date: 09/01/09 07:40 PM

 All,

 The 2009 AMSAT Symposium is rapidly approaching! And we hope you can join
 us..especially given that there are some low-cost airfares out there for
 those of us in the US.

  We have an outstanding venue this year at the Four Points Sheraton at the
 BWI Airport. Your symposium committee recently did a walkthrough of this
 facility. The accommodations and meeting rooms are superb. I do a lot of
 traveling and I must say that the rooms are absolutely beautiful. You
will
 definitely get a substantial bang for your buck (or Euro, etc) at this
 symposium. And planned 40th Anniversary celebratory events will be truly
 memorable.

 And to make things even better, Southwest Airlines has a phenomenal
 Nationwide (US) fall sale. $59-109 one-way airfares are available to BWI
 until Sept 3. And remember, with Southwest, there are no baggage fees.

 So we'd love to see you in quot;Charm Cityquot;-Baltimore Maryland..for
the
 symposium presentations, 40th anniversary celebrations, poster sessions,
and
 BoD meeting.

 And don't forget to submit a symposium paper to Dan Schultz, N8FGV, ASAP!!

[amsat-bb] Re: Indian high-orbit satellite?

2009-08-02 Thread Nitin Muttin [VU3TYG]
All,

Thank you for the appreciative note on our efforts for HAMSAT II and the
development of space technology in our country. We are aware of the
challenges that we face in realising a Amateur Radio satellite in MEO or GTO
orbit and we are making all possible efforts to make this a reality.The team
at AMSAT INDIA is also on the learning curve at this moment hence we would
like to keep it simple until we gain expertise on developing additional
innovative capabilities on payloads. Comments like these and the achivements
of other AMSAT organizations are a motivation factor for us to pursue our
plans for the benefit of the global amateur radio fraternity.

We shall keep you all updated on the progress.

 Bruce. I was impressed as well (and have been for sometime reading the
newsletter...and having been in India off and on over the last 10 years in
aviation related matters).

 The folks there (both on a ham radio basis and some other things) seem to
recall a lesson we have forgotten here...keep it simple ...you dont see any
gee whiz stuff on their birds...just solid transponders. Indian aerospace
seems to be a pleasant mix of quot;Russianquot; practicality and American
perfection...at least so far

 gt; The AMSAT India newsletter has some great news: their proposal for
 gt; Hamsat II requests that ISRO provide an elliptical or MEO orbit!
 gt; Moreover, they're also asking for space on a geosynchronous bird. I
 gt; suppose the latter would not necessarily benefit those of us in North
 gt; America, but it would provide a fine emergency service to Asian
 gt; regions and provide a pioneering example for other AMSAT groups.

[amsat-bb] Re: [amsatindia] Re: [VUHams] VU2MKP Silent Key

2009-06-09 Thread Nitin Muttin [VU3TYG]

It is sad and shocking to know that Robert is no more. I remember meeting
him many times and will continue to remember him as a humble and fine human
being. He was a life member of AMSAT INDIA and has advised and shared his
inputs during the design of VO-52. He was also one of the early VU station
on the AO-40 and other satellites.

Photograph of Robert in his shack can be viewed by visiting

May his soul rest in peace.

 It is a shocking and a very sad news. It is a bit difficult for me to
 accept that OT Robert is no more with us. He was truly an inspiring,
 humble and a fine human being. His technical knowledge is par with
 excellence. Rather, it is difficult to express in words about him. We
 really lost a man with a strong determination and a man who stood as
 an inspiration to us forever. I along with my family and club members
 express our Heart felt condolences to the bereaved family. May his
 Soul Rest in Peace. We miss you Robert.

 gt; I have just got the very sad news from VU2RCR Chandru, that our
friend
 gt; Robert Kohli VU2MKP became a silent key in Bangalore just a few
minutes
 ago
 gt; in a hospital where he had been admitted a few days ago.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; For those of us fortunate people who knew Robert, he was a truly
 gt; remarkable individual who in spite of his disabilities managed to do
many
 gt; things we would be happy to just attempt. He was an example of what
can be
 gt; done in spite of such severe handicaps.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; Being paralyzed from the neck down, he could only use his head and
mouth
 to
 gt; control his motorized wheel chair and it was a common sight for him
to
 drive
 gt; around the streets of Bangalore, visiting friends, going to
restaurants
 and
 gt; even shopping for radio components for his radio projects.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; He was an avid radio amateur, controlling the radio and associated
 gt; equipment, all with plastic rods held in his mouth. He operated the
 computer
 gt; also in this fashion and even made computer drawings on antenna
designs
 etc
 gt; which he shared with friends- my satellite antennae were home brewed
from
 gt; drawings he sent me.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; He was a keen DXer and had friends all over the world, on HF and
 satellites
 gt; also. When AO 40 was operational he made several hundreds of
contacts.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; Robert was Life member of ARSI and took an active part in all
activities.
 He
 gt; attended several ham fests and knew many, many hams all over VU and
the
 gt; rest of the world.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; He had recently constructed a home for himself in Bangalore in which
the
 gt; shack was on the first floor and had made a ramp from the ground
floor to
 gt; use his wheel chair to go to the first floor, so keen was he on
amateur
 gt; radio.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; Ham radio has lost a great operator who guided many hams and was a
source
 gt; of inspiration to many of us.
 gt;
 gt;
 gt;
 gt; - we will miss you Robert.
