[android-beginners] Re: Basic Layout
its hard to figure out without looking at your XML content. my guess is that you are using the "fill_parent" value for the layout_width of your linear layouts and the ImageView. replace this by "wrap_content" or alternatively specify the exact width in pixels that you want each of the 3 linear layouts to be. you will also have to use the same value on the ImageView. [android-beginners] Re: Is learning Java directly on the Android possible or a good idea?
Coming from a C/C++ background with some experience in other higher level languages (ActionScript, C#, Python, etc.) I found skipping the Java tutorials and going strait to the Android tutorials wasn't a problem. There were some parts where I had to Google Java questions, but for me (with my background) figuring out whether my question was a Java question or an Android question wasn't that hard. However, for someone with less overall programming experience and/or less experience working with different languages figuring out the difference between an Android question and a Java question may be more difficult. [android-beginners] Why does android.opengl.matrix use floating point instad of fixed point?
I noticed that the android.opengl.matrix class uses floating point numbers for everything and as far as I can tell there isn't a fixed point equivalent. However, elsewhere (ie: sample project) it's mentioned that fixed point is faster since android devices are likely to not have an FPU. Also, OpenGL ES has fixed point versions of every function I've looked at thus far, so I'm assuming you could write most of your program with fixed point only. So, why does android.opengl.matrix use floating point if it's known to be slow and has a faster alternative? I could understand if there was another Matrix class that used fixed point, but from what I can tell there isn't. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Beginners" group. What's going on? What's going on is the implementation of java.lang.Thread is adding the object to a ThreadGroup when the object is first created. However, the ThreadGroup.remove() call is only made from inside the VM when a thread exits. Since the thread is never started, it's never removed from the ThreadGroup, and you're leaking TestThread objects. [android-beginners] Blocking Access from phone
Hi, My Android based HTC Magic recently died (hardware fault) and I am unable to power on the device. I am getting it swapped for a new one today, however in the event that my provider repairs the device and puts it back into circulation I would like to block that particular device from accessing my account. The obvious answer is to change my password, however I was wondering if there was any other way to do this? [android-beginners] Using ContextMenu
In application I am working on I have this Activity with lots of TextViews (actually instances of a class I have extended from teh textView) in a LinearLayout.I wish to let the users long-click on any of the TextView and have an option of deleting / editing it. I have overriden the Activity's onCreateContextMenu method to super.onCreateContextMenu(theMenu, v, menuInfo); theMenu.add (ContextMenu.NONE, EVENT_VIEW_CONTEXT_MENU_ID, ContextMenu.NONE, R.string.eventview_viewevent); theMenu.add (ContextMenu.NONE, EVENT_DELETE_CONTEXT_MENU_ID, ContextMenu.NONE, R.string.eventview_deleteevent); I've also called registerContextmenu on the LinearLayout and overridden the onContextItemSelected method. When I run the application and long click on the TextView I get a context menu but on executing the action the application crashes. Apparently theItem.getMenuInfo() is null. How do I get it working? Specifically how do I know which View triggered the the onContextItemSelected event from inside the handler? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Beginners" group. [android-beginners] Where are the Email application settings stored?

[android-beginners] Basic Layout
Why has it got to be s difficult? For a week now I’ve been reading and playing around with code and have still not found the answer I want a simple 3 column layout, with images going from bottom to top in each. [android-beginners] Getting the signal strength for the Wifi Connection
Hi! I'm building an application that uses the signal strength for the WIFI and get some strange results from the emulator. I'm always getting the value -200 from the method WifiInfo::getRssi. The workflow I use is getting the WifiManager when starting up the Activity using Context::getSystemService. Then every time I need the signal strength I get a WifiInfo from the WifiManager using the method getConnectionInfo and finally get the strength using getRssi from the WifiInfo. Is this the expected behavior from the emulator? I currently don't have a phone to test it on and I'm not sure whether the problem is in my code or the fact that the emulator doesn't support this feature. /David --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Beginners" group. [android-beginners] Re: Is learning Java directly on the Android possible or a good idea?
I agree with the others that you should learn some Java on the PC before diving into Android. Everything you need is in the JDK and Notepad. After that, you might find you need to go back and look up a few things that are not so basic. Depends on how far you go with Android, but just reading through their samples in the SDK you will need to understand interfaces, generics, and constructors. Head First Java is a good book however it might be a little long if you are anxious to get going with Android. Take a look at Java Demystified which is much shorter and also very good. Good luck! I'm not aware of a graphical map of any of the currently released Android phones, although I only did a quick search for G1 images. You can find the keycodes here: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.html The actual position of these keys will depend on the phone, but you could compare them against images of the phones you are planning to target. I'm not sure what a "compound view" is, exactly. You can inflate the other layouts yourself and use TabHost.TabContentFactory to return the inflated layout for use in your TabSpec. Or, you can use in the layout with your tabs to inject the contents of other layouts: http://www.curious-creature.org/2009/02/25/android-layout-trick-2-include-to-reuse/ -- Mark Murphy (a Commons Guy) http://commonsware.com | http://twitter.com/commonsguy Android Development Wiki: http://wiki.andmob.org --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Beginners" group. [android-beginners] Re: Help: canvas.drawLine(p1.x, p1.y, p2.x, p2.y, paint);
The canvas needs something to draw onto. However, in your case you might be better served adding your code to the draw method in HelloItemizedOverlay. That method has a canvas passed to it which will already by correctly set up.
