[android-developers] Connecting to USB-Serial Converter in Android
I am attempting to connect to a serial device from a Android tablet, via USB-Serial Converter. In order to interface with this particular serial device, a linux library must be used as an interface. This library takes an integer as an argument, and tries to connect to the device at the following location : /dev/ttySx, where x is the arguement. If 2 is provided to the library, it will look for the device at /dev/ttyS2. Very simple. When I connect the device to Ubuntu, there's is one simple extra step for this device to work with the USB-Serial convert. The converter is exposed at the location /dev/ttyUSB1. I just need to create a simple soft-link with the serial port pattern (etc ln -s /dev/ttyUSV1 /dev/ttyS99). It works perfectly. Now the problem arises for Android. The converter is seen at /dev/bus/usb/01/01. I never seen this convention in other project. The question is how can I direct the I/O from /dev/ttySX to /dev/bus/usb/01/01 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] how to inject non-english characters
I am programming on a remote control app. One of the tasks I am facing is injecting characters. The code I am currently using looks like this: Instrumentation instr = new Instrumentation(); String str=a; // basically the same like calling instr.sendStringSync(str); char[] chars = str.toCharArray(); KeyCharacterMap keyCharacterMap = KeyCharacterMap.load(KeyCharacterMap.VIRTUAL_KEYBOARD); KeyEvent[] keyEvents = m_KeyCharacterMap.getEvents(chars); if (keyEvents != null) { for (KeyEvent kev : keyEvents) { instr.sendKeySync(kev); } } That works perfectly on english characters (The characters show up in EditText boxes). However, if I am trying to inject e.g. korean characters, this fails. The function getEvents returns null, even when I have configured korean language and keyboard. I know there is another mehtod for injecting strings directly: KeyEvent event = new KeyEvent(SystemClock.uptimeMillis(), str, 0, 0); instr.sendKeySync(event); This is not working either - no characters shown in EditText boxes, and onKeyMultiple() is not called either in my test activity. This is strange since dispatchKeyEvent() with the same event works in my test activity: KeyEvent event = new KeyEvent(SystemClock.uptimeMillis(), str, 0, 0); dispatchKeyEvent(event); I believe injecting the string directly is the correct way. However, using instrumentation it looks like the event is discarded somewhere in Android. The reason why I am not using dispatchKeyEvent is that I have to inject events no matter which activity is in front, even it is not my own activity. I think that is not possible using dispatchKeyEvent, is it? Using Instrumentation this is possible. At least with english characters. (My app is signed with the platform key and I've got the permission INJECT_EVENTS). How am I supposed to inject non-english characters? Any ideas? I ran out of ideas :( Best Regards, Hardy Kahl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Problem with hashing speed
Hi guys, I am designing an Android application for a school project which requires me to do chain hashing and i have realised that the SHA256 hashing method works really slow on my Android devices compared to an old PC. I tried it on Nexus one using ice cream sandwhich, Nexus S and HTC Incredible S using gingerbread. Below is my implementation of the hash. Had tried with MD5 and SHA1 too and the speed is still slow. Is there something wrong with my implementation, is there anyway to speed up the hashing? public static String SHA256(String toHash) { try { md = MessageDigest.getInstance(SHA-256); } catch (NoSuchAlgorithmException ex) { } md.update(toHash.getBytes()); byte byteData[] = md.digest(); sb = new StringBuilder(byteData.length * 2); for (byte b : byteData) { sb.append(HEX_CHARS[(b 0xF0) 4]); sb.append(HEX_CHARS[b 0x0F]); } return sb.toString(); } Thank in advance! [android-developers] Bluetooth HDP Sample Code won't run on emulator
Recently, sample code for the Bluetooth HDP Demo has been made available at: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothHDP/index.html However, when attempting to Run this program using the emulator, an error message appears on the emulator display, reading, Unfortunately, HDP Sample has stopped. When referring to the LogCat, a short list of errors are listed (all of which are under the AndroidRuntime Tag). I am currently utilizing Android 4.0.3 (API 15), the most recent update as of this hour, and have not modified the origianl sample code in any way. I have not yet tested this code on an actual Android device to compare functionality; nonetheless, I do not find any reason the emulator version would not work. If you are an individual who has run this demo successfully on the emulator, I will try changing machines and reattempt the process. Am I mistaken that this code can ONLY run on an actual device? Re: [android-developers] Confirmation when mail has been sent
Same issue , just the difference is intent type, (intent.setType(application/*), because im sending email with attachments (pdf or zip). But my problem is with the attachment. The Intent.EXTRA_STREAM read from sdcard but after sending the mail i want to delete it from sdcard. So i used startActivityForResult and onActivityResult i delete that file from sdcard. Everything works well except the received mail has no attachment(not even the file name with 0 size). Think the sending process done by some other thread rather than a UI thread. and the deletion task is done from the UI thread even before the sending process is complete. [android-developers] pause/resume videoview on clicking it
Hi all, I am having a video, which I am playing in videoview. Now, it is initially started playing. After that, while it is playing, I want to click it and pause it on that, and similarly I want to resume it on clicking it again. I initially used onClickListener on videoView, which didn't work. Later, I realized onTouchListener is helpful, so I used that. It somewhat helped me. Now, I am able to pause it on first click, but after when I reclick it, it shows strange behaviour. Its being played when my mouse is pressed, and as soon as I release the key, it is again paused. The code I am using is as follows: public class Play_video extends Activity{ private VideoView video; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); getWindow().setFormat(PixelFormat.TRANSLUCENT); setContentView(R.layout.play_video); File clip=new File(/sdcard/my.mp4); if (clip.exists()) { video=(VideoView)findViewById(R.id.myvideoview); video.setVideoPath(clip.getAbsolutePath()); video.start(); video.requestFocus(); Log.d(videoview, before click); video.setOnTouchListener(new OnTouchListener() { public boolean onTouch(View v, MotionEvent event) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub if(video.isPlaying()) { Log.d(video,is playing); video.pause(); } else { video.start(); Log.d(video,is paused); } return true; } }); } } } Please direct me where I am wrong, and what should I do to achieve this. Re: [android-developers] Connecting to USB-Serial Converter in Android

[android-developers] instrumenting the android device to log method invocations
Hello Guys, I was thinking that since the Android stack is an open source, is there any possibility to modify the virtual machine that runs the apps to log the method invocations. I am after the call sequence that application performs. I am wondering where I can find a document for instrumenting? [android-developers] Re: How to handle dismiss of DialogFragment (support lib) while app is in background
I already have a solid way to handle if the activity is stopped. What I'm struggling with is how to handle if the activity is paused due to being in the background. If the Activity is paused, then calling Android Compatibility Package's (ACP) DialogFragment.dismiss() triggers an InvalidStateException. In that same paused state, if I call Activity.dismissDialog(int), the framework correctly handles the dismissal without causing an exception. If I were using true DialogFragments (not from the ACP), I could use dismissAllowingStateLoss() and I believe it would be fine. However, since I'm using ACP, there is no dismissAllowingStateLoss(). There is more detail on the Stack Exchange post for this issue, which remains open: stack exchangehttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/10760809/how-can-you-handle-dismissing-a-dialogfragment-compatibility-lib-upon-completi/10761170#10761170 . [android-developers] Re: Looper is null in HandlerThread
Well, the error message is for sharedWorkerThread and the code is sharedPrioThread and I admit I've never actually done exactly this, however I strongly suspect that this is the Android-ended-your-process issue. When Android sees more than a certain number of processes running in background (14 on my ICS Galaxy) it starts killing them off. They are restarted in new processes as needed. The new process will need its state re-initialized. ...note, btw, that calls to quit() don't have anything to do with the value of the field (I presume) sharedPrioThread. Why are you lazily initializing the field? I have to say that, one of the best things that is coming from the Java communities' interactions with Android is that they may, finally, quite lazily initializing everything. It makes programs more complex and it is only rarely useful. if sharedPrioThread were static final initialized at creation, I don't think you'd have the problem. G. Re: [android-developers] Re: keys not being issued on android 4.0
Er, that device doesn't have a physical keyboard, does it? If it doesn't have a physical keyboard, you would never ever have seen any such keys in onKeyPreIme()... because it has to be the IME that generates those keys and that of course is not going to come before the IME. Further, unless you are putting your focused view into the special legacy text input mode, none of those characters would be delivered as key events at all, they would be provided to the InputConnection through its API. And do the same for all other countries where my apps are sold? Can we expect that Google will send complete reports to the tax authorities in all countries about all taxes collected by our apps? If this is true, I shall consider stop selling my apps on the Google Play Store. Or may be limit the sale of my apps to countries which will give me a minimum of tax related problems. Such as only sell apps to the US, where there (hopefully) will be no sales tax on my apps. I am neither capable of - nor interested in - keeping track of apps sold - and tax collected - for every country. I hope that Google will have to reconsider this. How can I get that back? What you describe, *is* the Debug window. Make sure your app is marked debuggable in the manifest. In the Devices window, make sure your device is selected. Thanks, debuggable was off for some reason. The debug window is still the same, but now logcat shows a backtrace in debug mode as well as run mode, and I can click on lines there to edit the offending code. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] SoundPool error Unable to load sample: (null)
Hi there, I am facing an Unable to load sample: (null) error with the SoundPool, while trying to load a sample (not surprising, yeah?). I have discarded all common flaws that should raise that kind of error, so the file does exists (I can see it there), the file is readable (assets manager seems to read it with no problem), and the file is not corrupt (I can reproduce it with a wav player without problems). So I do not know what could be the cause of this error. Here is the code snippet: try { AssetFileDescriptor assetDescriptor = assets.openFd(filename); int soundId = soundPool.load(assetDescriptor, 0); return new AndroidSound(soundPool, soundId); } catch (IOException e) { throw new RuntimeException(Couldn't load sound ' + filename + '); } assets is an AssetManager instance, and it loads pretty well other samples in the same directory. It does not raises an IOException, so it is pretty clear that the file is there and it is readable, but when executing the soundPool.load line, it complains with the error Unable to load sample: (null). Any ideas? Thanks a million, -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] notifyDataSetChanged() Timing of Events on UI Thread
I'm subclassing BaseAdapter to simply serve up images for a GridView based on internal data. The main UI allows the user to drag these images 'off' the grid. The drag image is a separate ImageView vying for Z order with the grid in their parent layout. Whenever I reposition the drag image using layout(), it automatically comes to the top and looks as you'd expect. When the user first clicks the grid and I've worked out which list position is under the pointer, I am calling a method on the adapter to change the underlying data to reflect the image having 'gone' from that position. I thus use notifyDataSetChanged() to flag to the UI that it needs to refresh from the adapter. All of this and the dragging mechanism works absolutely fine, with just one tiny glitch - it seems that notifyDataSetChanged() (or the GridView, which I assume is an observer) waits for the UI thread to become free before it actually refreshes the grid - which makes perfect sense. The problem is, that seems to bring the grid back to the top of the Z order, popping my drag image to the back. If you click the grid and leave the pointer in that position for a moment, the image appears to completely disappear until you move the pointer and the correct Z order is re-established with the drag image on top. What is the best way to either * Be notified that the grid was actually refreshed so that I can manually re-establish the Z order without waiting for pointer movement, * Or schedule a call to bringToFront() so that it also goes on the end of the UI's queue, thus happening after the grid has been refreshed I.e., m_overlayImage.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); // Drag image first becomes visible. m_adapter.setData(gridRowIndex, gridColIndex, 0); == Calls notifyDataSetChanged(). m_overlayImage.bringToFront(); == Can I delay this until the UI thread is free? * Or a third option? Is there such a thing as stay-on-top semantics for a view, or some sort of overlay view with transparency such as desktop Java's GlassPane that I could add the drag image view to instead? I can't find anything that looks promising in the docs... so far. Thanks in advance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group.
