[android-developers] Coding design pattern consideration

2016-09-08 Thread Abhi
How should we design our code base for Android Apps:

   1. Should we follow traditional web style with proper abstract classes,
   interfaces, different design patterns?
   2. Or Should we try to avoid these as much as possible to get a minimal,
   maintainable code for better performance?

[android-developers] In app billing and trial query.

2013-06-13 Thread Abhi
Hi,
   I am building an application which I wish to upload to the app store as
a paid app. But i would like to post it as a trial app for a set amount of
time. I looked at all the options in the app billing version 3. I have
found a few problems.
1. If I create my app with a non-consumable inapp item then i will not be
able to keep it for a set duration as a trial app(Please let me know if my
assumption is correct).
2. I f I create it via a subscription based model then is there a way I can
make the subscriptions last forever and not yearly?

Any help regarding this will be extremely helpful.

Thanks and Regards,
Abhijeeth Hiliyana

[android-developers] How to extend the preview layout in Google camera to enable the control panel to look transparent in android 4.0

2013-03-12 Thread Abhi
Hi,
I am currently building a custom OS build of android 4.0. One of the
requirements we have is to make the stock google camera look similar to
android 4.2. In android 4.0 the controlPanel present at the bottom has a
black background. I have tried to change the background to transparent but
there is no effect. After some experiments i think the reason for
this is because the GLCanvasImpl does not cover full screen. Is there was i
can modify this functionality of GLCanvasImpl to extend full screen. This
is the first time i working on Android source code so i am not sure if i am
in the right direction. It would be great if someone could let me know if
my assumption is the right one? Or is there an easier way of doing this?
Thanks,
Abhi

Re: [android-developers] Database getting blank in android

2012-08-10 Thread Abhi
Thanks Pedro for your reply.
 I had already put all the checks to open or close the database . The thing
is that this issue is occuring not so often and also it is occuring in
Samsung gi5800 phone. If i intentionally left the app opened for few hours
then it won't come. I just want to confirm that whether this error is in my
code or it is the issue with this phone.

[android-developers] Re: how to deflate/hide(invisible) ViewStub from Menu (onOptionsItemSelected)?

2011-11-04 Thread Abhi
Hi Kostya,

I have a GalleryView in my ViewStub and I dynamically add images to
the Gallery. I would like to control from a menu option, the
visibility of the complete ViewStub view. So basically, when the
ViewStub is up displaying the gallery and I press the menu option, the
whole view gets hidden but the content (i.e. Gallery items) remain in
the stub. On pressing menu option again, the whole view is displayed
again with the gallery items selected earlier.

I don't know what you mean by replacing the stub with and
toggle its contents' visibility. Could you elaborate a little more?

Thanks,

Abhi

[android-developers] how to deflate/hide(invisible) ViewStub from Menu (onOptionsItemSelected)?

2011-11-04 Thread Abhi
I keep getting NullPointerException trying to deflate or make
invisible the ViewStub from my UI. I just wanted to be sure I am doing
it right.

I am inflating my ViewStub in onItemLongClick method of GalleryView by
doing the following:

@Override
public boolean onItemLongClick(AdapterView arg0, View
viu, int arg2,
long arg3) {
Toast.makeText(GalleryView.this, "New item added to
Favorites", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

favsCount++;

   //checking to see if ViewStub is already inflated or
not
if(!stubvis){
stub = (ViewStub) findViewById(R.id.stub1);
stub.inflate();
stubvis = true;
trayUP = true;
}

return true;
}

});

and then in onPrepareOptionsMenu() I am adding the menu item based on
the visibility of ViewStub. If inflated and visible, I create a menu
item to hide it, otherwise, a menu item to show/make visible.

@Override

public boolean onPrepareOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {

menu.clear();

if(trayUP) {

menu.add(0, HIDETRAY, 0, "Hide Favorites Tray");

} else {

menu.add(0, SHOWTRAY, 0, "Show Favorites Tray");

}

return super.onPrepareOptionsMenu(menu);

}
Next, in onOptionsItemSelected(), I am writing the two cases based on
the menu item selection. Case 1 when the tray is not visible, so I
make it visible. Case 2 when it is visible, so I hide it by doing the
following:

@Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {

switch (item.getItemId()) {

case HIDETRAY:

Log.v(TAG, "Hiding Favs Tray");
findViewById(R.id.stub1).setVisibility(View.GONE);
trayUP = false;

case SHOWTRAY:

Log.v(TAG, "Showing Favs Tray");
findViewById(R.id.stub1).setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
trayUP = true;

}

return true;
}

I know I am making a silly mistake somewhere. And my mind is too
saturated to think straight at the moment. Need help :(

Thanks,

Ab

[android-developers] display images in galleryview from sqlite database

2011-10-11 Thread Abhi
Hi

I have a sqlite database that has over 2000 low res thumbnails of
pictures. The database itself is over 100MB in size. The project
requires me to have the photos residing in the database instead of the
file path. This is what I would like to do and need help with as this
is my first time dealing with images. I have a horizontal GalleryView
in my App UI that I want to populate with images pulled from this
database dynamically. I don't mind if these images are lazy loaded on
to the gallery view in the background. I read somewhere that I will
have to use an ImageAdapter to bind the images to the UI element
dynamically. I need in understanding how this is done. I have never
used the BaseAdapter class.

Thanks,

AB

[android-developers] Curved Gallery view

2011-09-21 Thread Abhi
Hi all,

I would like to know if it is possible to create a curved gallery view
from the default horizontal one that Android offers? I don't know if
that entails changing the Gallery code in Android framework which I
want to avoid. Is there any other way to make a custom Gallery view
from scratch? Again, how to go about doing that?

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

[android-developers] Gallery View and SQLite database

2011-09-13 Thread Abhi
Hi all,

I have a sqlite database of 100+ low res images saved as Blob data. I
am creating an App that has a GalleryView and I would like to display
the 100+ images from my database in this view. The user can scroll
through the horizontally scrolling list and select the one he wants to
see full screen.

I am using a sample app that takes sample images from 'res/drawable'
folder to display them on the gallery view. I would like to do the
same but pull images from the database instead. Can someone guide me?

Thanks,

AB

displaying the image, so up to that point everything is good.

//result is a byte array which contains the jpeg image

ByteArrayInputStream inputStream = new ByteArrayInputStream(result);
b = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(inputStream);

Log.i(TAG, "Size of bitmap is " + b.getWidth() + " x " +
b.getHeight());

ImageView imageview1 = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.ImageV);
imageview1.setImageBitmap(b);

The exception I am getting is below :

The field type for image column is BLOB. And I have no idea what that
means. I am trying to figure out a way to retreive BLOB data into my
Android application and display it on the screen.

[android-developers] Re: how to retrieve images from a sql database?

2011-08-23 Thread Abhi
@Ibendlin - Yes, SQLite on device is what I meant. Sorry about the
confusion
@Drezden - I somehow don't have that option to add images to
MediaStore, keeping the file path in the SQLite database. I would like
to still try retrieving those images stored in the database before
deciding which way to really go. Anything you could tell me about
doing that?

Thanks,

AB

[android-developers] how to retrieve images from a sql database?

2011-08-22 Thread Abhi
Hi

I have a database of low res images that I am trying to use for one of
my applications. What I would like to do is to retrieve the images one
by one and display them in a slideshow. I was told that images are
stored as byte arrays in sql database. I am new to sql and looking for
some direction on how to do this, what query to put and how to extract
the byte array from the database for further use.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
AB

[android-developers] '-1' error during HTTPS communication.

2011-04-01 Thread ABhi
Hi All,

Below is my problem scenario.

 - My Server is on running on https.
 - Doing connection with ‘HttpURLConnection’ api & already tried
‘HttpClient’ as well earlier but both are showing same issue.
 - Server certificate is ‘Verisign Class
   3’ certificate.
 - Every alternate request sent to
   server, receives ‘-1’ in http
   response code. For e.g. If my first
   request is successful (200 code)
   second request would get (-1) code,
   then again successful & then again
   4th request gets -1 in response.  I’m
   not sure why this -1 code is returned
   & there’s not description on HTTP
   standard site as well.

Any idea how can i get rid off this '-1' response i receive. In which
scenario server returns this code?

I'm posting my sample code below.

--
HttpURLConnection connection;
SSLContext sc = SSLContext.getInstance("TLS");
sc.init(null, new TrustManager[] { new TrustManager() },
new SecureRandom());

HttpsURLConnection.setDefaultSSLSocketFactory(sc.getSocketFactory());
HttpsURLConnection.setDefaultHostnameVerifier(new
MyHostnameVerifier());
connection = (HttpsURLConnection) httpUrl.openConnection();
connection.setRequestMethod("POST");
connection.setRequestProperty("Content-Length", String
.valueOf(requestBinary.length));
connection.setRequestProperty("Content-Type",
"octet/x-application-csam");
connection.setDoInput(true);
connection.setDoOutput(true);
connection.setConnectTimeout(3);
connection.connect();
connection.getOutputStream().write(requestBinary);
int responseCode = connection.getResponseCode();
--

Thanks in advance

[android-developers] unable to write to sdcard and the permission is not set

2010-12-28 Thread Abhi Rao
Android 2.2 using the emulator
I am unable to read and write sdcard

When I do ls -l after adb shell - this is what I see
# ls -l
ls -l
drwxr-xr-x root system2010-12-27 05:24 asec
drwx-- root root 2010-12-27 05:24 secure
d- system   system2010-12-27 05:24 sdcard
#

Here is how I prepared the SDCARD
- Run mksdcard 8192K C:\android-dev\emu_sdcard\emu_logFile
- Create a new AVD, then assign emu_logFile to it so that when I view
the AVD Details it says C:\android-dev\emu_sdcard\emu_logFile against
the field "SD Card"

In the code, sdDir.canWrite returns false - please note it is not the
exception.

I have added the following to AndroidManifest.xml
**uses-permission
android:name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" **

I have posted this in stackoverflow - I have gone through the postings
related to sdcard and emulator - no success yet!

Please help -

[android-developers] Re: Button State does not toggle automatically!! Help!

2010-08-23 Thread Abhi
Hi Kostya

Ok. Let me explain further. I am changing button state by doing
button.setEnabled(true or false) but, the state that the button is
currently in, won't show up on the screen unless I touch the screen.
That is where I mentioned about button's focus.

So, even though the button is getting disabled through my program by
calling button.setEnabled(false), on the screen, I still see the
button as active and only when I touch the screen, the button is seen
to be in the inactive state (disabled state with grey color).

I hope that solves your confusion?

Thanks,

Abhi

[android-developers] Button State does not toggle automatically!! Help!

2010-08-22 Thread Abhi
Guys,

I am trying to get the button in my layout to have focus as I am
programmatically changing its state. My application is a video player
using VideoView. I am toggling the state of the button based on where
my video is. So basically, I am doing videoview.getCurrentPosition()
and if it is in a certain window, I want to toggle my Button state
(enabled to disabled and vice versa). The layout is LinearLayout and I
have the VideoView and Button layed horizontally. When I first had the
MediaController in my Video, the button would change focus on touching
the videoview (which is when the MediaController would pop up). I
later removed the controller because I didn't want the button state to
change when the user touches the screen. I want it to change
automatically.

I tried all sorts of combinations possible. button.setFocusable(),
button.requestFocus(), button.bringToFront() and so on. But none of
them seem to work.

Is there any way I can make it toggle programatically and without user
intervention through touch? or is it impossible to do it with the
VideoView?

Thanks,

Abhi

[android-developers] Toggle Button state programatically

2010-08-20 Thread Abhi
Hi

I am trying to toggle button state programatically. I want to go
between setEnabled(False) and setEnabled(True) for a given duration. I
have a timer and I want to toggle between these states at regular time
intervals.

I see that the button toggles correctly the first time, for e.g. from
True state to False state, but doesn't go back to True state again
unless I touch the button, which is kinda weird. Can someone help me
on this?

Thanks,

Abhi

[android-developers] Droid Froyo manual update

2010-08-11 Thread Abhi
Hi guys,

I may be posting this question in the wrong forum. But maybe some of
you are facing the same problems as me and might be able to help. I
did the manual Froyo update on my Moto Droid couple of days ago after
following instructions on a reliable forum. However, I have been
having problems like system hangs and video playback not smooth like
before. I wanted to get back to my original 2.1 firmware and wait for
the OTA update instead. Is there any way I can switch back to the old
firmware update of 2.1?

Thanks. I would really appreciate any help on this

[android-developers] Froyo: files picked have prefix 'mnt' before the actual filename... why?

2010-08-11 Thread Abhi
I have a video player application that I am trying to run on my moto
droid with Froyo. When the user picks a particular video file for
playback, the file picked is seen to have a filename with a prefix
'mnt' added to its actual name. This is causing a lot of problems
within my application as I am further using these filenames for other
functions of the app.

anyone knows whats going on?

[android-developers] Problem using android services

2010-07-06 Thread Abhi
Hi,
I am trying to create an application which has a service running
in the background. But i should also be able to re run the service
when i select option(Here it is a check box) from the fore ground. I
am getting Unable to instantiate service error. I have called the
service in my main activity using

Intent periodicService= new Intent();
periodicService.setAction("com.myservice.myservice");
context.stopService(periodicService);
context.startService(periodicService);

where my context is got by using getApplicationContext();

Any help would be welcome.

[android-developers] Re: Loading from a compiled xml file

2010-06-30 Thread ABhi
I'm not sure if i understand the question correctly. My need is
slightly different for dynamic screen generation.

Hi All,

I'm dealing with a problem you guys might not have faced earlier.

I'm having a use-case in my Android application where the actual
screen that i want to show to user is not stored in any layout file of
my application. The layout of the of the screen is designed by server
in this case, based on selection made by user on first screen.

Let me elaborate here,
1st Screen : List of check box with different biller names. (Imagine
i've selected 2 billers from this screen)

2nd Screen : (The screen that server has decided how it should look
like)
* Header,
* 1st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 1st Biller TextBox
* Image (a Separator image)
* 2st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 2st Biller TextBox.
* Here there can be a checbox/radio/another TextBox anything.
* Image (a Separator image)
* Button (to submit above form back to server)

I hope makes some sense in what i'm planning to design.

-
The current issues i'm dealing with are as below.
1). How to draw this dynamic widgets?
2). How to fetch user Inputs from this dynamically created widgets?

Thanks in advance.
Regards
Abhishek

[android-developers] Dynamic loading of complete layout file.

2010-06-30 Thread ABhi

2nd Screen : (The screen that server has decided how it should look
like)
* Header,
* 1st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 1st Biller TextBox
* Image (a Separator image)
* 2st Biller name (Label)
* Amount for 2st Biller TextBox.
* Here there can be a checbox/radio/another TextBox anything.
* Image (a Separator image)
* Button (to submit above form back to server)

I hope makes some sense in what i'm planning to design.

-
The current issues i'm dealing with are as below.
1). How to draw this dynamic widgets?
2). How to fetch user Inputs from this dynamically created widgets?

Thanks in advance.
Regards
Abhishek

[android-developers] automatically turn on application

2010-06-09 Thread Abhi
Can I kick start my application automatically based on accelerometer
data from a "no app running" state? For e.g. if the phone is subjected
to strong vibrations, the application turns on. In other words, how
can I read accelerometer w/o really having an application do it?

Thanks,
Abhi

Hey Sean

Thanks for the link. But that's using VideoView and I am using
MediaPlayer instead. I already have a player using VideoView but am
having issues with it, so I decided to switch over to MediaPlayer. I
have a player running so far but no auto Media Controller (like the

[android-developers] Re: Is it possible to keep an authtoken stored for an Account private?

Are you storing the authoken as part of the userData in the Account?
If so, anyone can access that. Perhaps you need to find a different
method to store your authtoken. You could look at creating your own
database using a Cursor or use SharedPreferences.

[android-developers] VideoView and MediaPlayer

2010-05-28 Thread Abhi
Hello,

I am trying to find out what's an equivalent to the release() method
of MediaPlayer in VideoView?

I am running out of memory coz I think I am not calling a release()
method on all my Media Player resources. I have a number of instances
of VideoView and I want to make sure I give up resources everytime a
new instance is called.

Any help?

Thanks

[android-developers] Pushing up views above soft keyboard

2010-05-20 Thread abhi
hi,

I am trying to push up the views in my activity whenever a soft
keyboard comes up. I have been partially successful in this, except
that certain views remain hidden behind the soft keyboard.

My XML looks like the below. I am specifying the last RelativeLayout
RL3 containing buttons with the attribute:
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" so that they stay above the
soft keyboard when it comes up. However. the scrollview SV1 which is
above the last RelativeLayout RL3 is not scrolling up completely and
so a part of the scroll view remains hidden behind the soft keyboard.
I have tried to set paddingBottom=70px but that still does not make
the scroll view go up. Any ideas why this is happening?

[android-developers] Installing apps on Zoom 2

HI

I have the TI Zoom 2 kit that I want to install some of my
applications to. But I don't know how to make it run on my Windows
environment with Eclipse and the Android SDK, just like how we develop
on any other Android phone/device.

Does anyone here know how to do this? Or if someone can point me to a
user manual for Zoom 2 & Android that will be great too.

Thanks,

Abhi

// after orientation change, get the value
final Object obj = getLastNonConfigurationInstance();
if (null != obj) {
val = (boolean)obj;

  //This is working the first time init() called. But second time its

[android-developers] Java Help, Replace first line of text file!

2010-05-10 Thread Abhi
Hi,

I am looking for a way to replace the first line of a file. Until now,
I was using BufferedReader to read the contents of the file into and
then going through each line and look for the one I want to replace.
This caused some memory issues as a large file with large data would
slow things down on the phone. So I moved the line to be the first
line of the file and all I want to do is whenever there is a need,
replace the contents of first line with something else without caring
about the rest of the file.

I have been suggested different ways to do this, StringBuilder,
RandomAccessFile but I am looking for a neat example for any of the
above solutions or any other solution.

Please help

Thanks,

Abhi

[android-developers] Default buffer size used in BufferedReader constructor. It would be better to be explicit if an 8k-char buffer is required!

2010-05-06 Thread Abhi
Hi

The above error occurs when I do the following.

I have a text file with multiple lines of data. Within my application
I come across the need to replace a line from the file with a new one.
I am using BufferedReader with a fixed size (50k) to read the file
into as below:

FileReader input_redo = new FileReader(redo);
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(input_redo);

  String line = "", oldtext = "";

 while((line = reader.readLine()) != null)
 {
 oldtext += line + "\r\n";
 }
 reader.close();
 String newtext = oldtext.replaceAll("Hello how are you", "Have I
met you before?");

 FileWriter writer = new FileWriter("/sdcard/data/replace.txt");
 writer.write(newtext);
 writer.close();

Could anyone please help me out with this error? I know the device is
running out of memory bcoz of the buffer size or something but don't
know a work around for this. Please help

[android-developers] Re: VideoView path problem

2010-05-04 Thread Abhi
Aman,

Do this to let user pick a video

Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK);
i.setType("video/*");
startActivityForResult(i, PICK_VIDEO);

and in onActivityResult look for the request code 'PICK_VIDEO' and
pass along the URI of the selected video to another activity this way:

Uri data = intent.getData();

if (data != null) {

Intent i = new Intent(this, YourVideoPlayer.class);
i.setData(data);
startActivity(i);

}

Hope that helps

Abhi

[android-developers] Switching video files dynamically

2010-04-27 Thread Abhi
HI

I am trying to switch between two video files dynamically, but as soon
as I set the path for the second video file during playback of the
first, the app either hangs or force closes. This is what I am doing

if(mVideoView.getCurrentPosition()>2000)  //switch to other video
after 2 secs.
{

mVideoView.pause();
mVideoView.stopPlayback();

mVideoView.setVideoPath("/sdcard/Videos/Test.mp4");
//set path for new video
mVideoView.start();

mVideoView.requestFocus();

}

Am I missing something?

[android-developers] Insert animation between video playback?

2010-04-27 Thread Abhi
Hello

I am not sure if this makes any sense. But what I really want to do is
to insert some animation snippets (1-2 secs) in between my Video
playback to try and give the users a transitional effect while
watching videos. My questions really is whether I can do this while
the videoview is running the video:

mVideoView.pause();
mVideoView.setVideoPath("location of a short animation clip");
mVideoView.start();

. 1-2 secs of animation playback on the same view

mVideoView.setVideoPath("location of original video");
mVideoView.seekTo("where I paused");
mVideoView.start();

Am I shooting in the dark or is this something I can spend time
trying?

Thanks,

Abhi

2010-04-23 Thread Abhi
I see the .mp4 video as having a frame rate of 30fps and resolution
640 x 480. Is that an issue?

Also, I don't see the mp4 when I call list of all videos from within
my application by

Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK);
i.setType("video/*");
startActivityForResult(i, PICK_VIDEO);

The only ones that show up are the .3gp video files located on my
sdcard.

done wonderful job by having both horizontal and vertical scrolling
for the TextView.

Hope it helps you.

Abhishek

[android-developers] Re: how to determine length of a video programmatically?

2010-03-26 Thread Abhi
I am using VideoView and I tried using getDuration() this way

* defined VideoView mVideoView earlier in the code..

mVideoView.setVideoPath(getDataSource(path));
long duration = mVideoView.getDuration();
mVideoView.start();

This returns a -1 when I try reading 'duration'

[android-developers] Video player

2010-03-25 Thread Abhi
Hi,

I want to create a better video picker for my player. What I am doing
today is

startActivityForResult( new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
android.provider.MediaStore.Video.Media.INTERNAL_CONTENT_URI),PICK_VIDEO);

but this brings up a basic list view. What I am trying to get is
something with thumbnails to make it easier to surf through the list
and pick the one he needs.

Any suggestions?

[android-developers] Wireshark not showing HTTP packets for emulator

Hi,

I'm trying to use wireshark to capture some HTTP packets exchanged
between the emulator and a website. However, even though I can see the
web content on the emulator browser, wireshark does not display any
HTTP packets exchanged between the emulator and the website. Why is
this?
