[android-developers] Creating folders in SD card

2019-11-04 Thread Dan
File permissions.
Likely 0x700 and your app is getting a new Unix UID when reinstalled so it
can't read/write there.

The fact that it works at all is a security issue, as sometimes some other app
is refusing the UID and gets access.

You could let anyone see it with 0x777, but that just exposes the data all the
time instead of to whoever gets the recycled UID.

[android-developers] Using Google Play Books on Studio virtual devices

2017-09-20 Thread Dan Frist
I can't use Google Play Books on Studio's Android emulator. I've tried the
Nexus 5X with 8.0 and 7.1.1 (which is the only thing available with Google
Play). I can get everything installed and run the app, but the pages of the
books are blank. I can even long press on a page and can highlight the
invisible text on the page. I can also use Read Aloud and it will read the
invisible text. I just can't see it. Any ideas?

[android-developers] Android Pay availability?

2016-11-14 Thread Dan Storm
Hi.

Does anyone know of a roadmap for the availability of Android Pay based on
countries?

We've had lots of national tech blogs and news sites promising the arrival
of Android Pay for the past two years or so, but still no sign.

[android-developers] App submission rejected due to copyright infringement

2016-06-15 Thread Dan Hastings
I have created a gaming app that displays information on video games and
integrates with the main website. Each page includes a small 200x150 image
for the game wallpaper on each page for the game. I have submitted the app
and i got rejected on the grounds that "your app contains official images
in the app activity.". This is true, but it is no different to the content
of 100s of other apps. In fact there are already 2 similar apps on the
store that are from independent, non official developers that have similar
content. In fact both of them contain official game images in the
screenshots of the app on the store. There are thousands of video games out
there, it is completely impossible to get permission from all these
developers to use the box art. How is it that these other apps have been
able to get past any copyright infringement issues, yet i seem to be stuck
with some stringent copyright rules that are very unrealistic. As far as i
am aware, thumbnails fall under fair use. The resolution of the images
being used are so small that they have to be considered thumbnails.

I have tried to appeal this using the same argument above, but I cant see
it being successful. Where do i stand with this? Other apps are on the
store doing similar things to my app. All of the images being used are
stored on a web server not within the APK itself. The app file contains no
content other than code. All images and information are pulled from a
server that I maintain. Is this something i could use to get past the
rejection? Is there some other shortcut that i do now know of that other
people are using to get around these copyright issues?

[android-developers] Creating a sphere build of shapes

2016-02-18 Thread Dan Storm
Hi everyone.

So, I'm boldly trying to do something new.
I can make you average newbie app - I made some simple apps displaying some
news from RSS sources, logging into third party services and similar.

Now, I'd like to create a game and I would suspect some OpenGL stuff would
be needed, but I'm not quite sure where to start.

My thoughts are the following; I'd like to create a sphere. The surface of
the sphere is built by a shape (hexagons, for example). When the player
presses this shape it should disappear. The purpose of the game is to
destroy the sphere by destroying the shapes.

How would I go around this?

Any input is appreciated.

[android-developers] Permissions Messages in VR (Google Cardboard Apps)

2016-02-17 Thread Dan M

*We are currently aware of the requirement to display a message asking the
user for permission to access the SDCARD, every time the app boots up.
However, we are currently unsure how best to handle this in regards to
Google Cardboard VR apps. We can’t ask the user for permission from within
the app, as the user would be in VR and presently the dialogue box that
pops up does so in 2D over the top of the VR layer. *

*Any advice you can offer us in how to handle such messages would be
greatly appreciated.*

So, deprecated just means "please don't use this anymore, we are going to

it in the future", it's still implemented up to Android M (but good on you
for planning
for when they no-op it.)

historical data:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/usage/UsageEvents.html

If you need real time, you need to cobble together something that watches
the

http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~zhiyunq/pub/sec14_android_activity_inference.pdf

and do some horrid scan of /proc/ looking to map processes to linux
UID
and map that to package names with the package manager (both of which are
not Android Public APIs so could be shut down via SEAndroid or Knox
policies,
or OEMs just doing something different)

Correction, I see now that that L isn't deprecated but functionality is
no-oped.
The alternate getRunningAppProcesses seems to need a special permission
to look at processes from apps that are not your own

Re: [android-developers] can't install app on android 6.0

If it is the multi-user issue, you don't have to use adb uninstall, the
upper right menu bar in the settings->apps->(select your app) will have an
"uninstall for all users" option that will get it off the device for all
user profiles.

[android-developers] GooglePlayServicesUtil.isGooglePlayServicesAvailable returns SERVICE_INVALID on a stock Samsung Galaxy S6 phone

2016-01-14 Thread Dan Katz
Hi All,

I'm a developer for a company with several apps. We are
using GooglePlayServicesUtil.isGooglePlayServicesAvailable to check if the
device has Google Play services installed regularly on app startup. We've
noticed that from time to time - on Two Samsung Galaxy 6 devices we get
SERVICE_INVALID (9) response from the isGooglePlayServicesAvailable (which
means "The version of the Google Play services installed on this device is
not authentic.").

We are using a old Google Play services lib (3.2.65) due to compatibility
reasons (I know , we should upgrade ASAP, we are working on it).

We are talking about Stock Android devices, fully updated, that no one
changed in any way. We display a msg to the user in case
isGooglePlayServicesAvailable
returns a value other than success, which causes some confusion when it
returns SERVICE_INVALID because the app receives Gcm msgs although it's
"invalid".

Any idea? I posted this question in Stackoverflow.com

as well.

Thanks!

[android-developers] Re: How to Make WebView as Built In Bootstrap , Javascript Resource ?

2016-01-13 Thread Dan
In your app, create a WebViewClient that overrides

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebViewClient.html#shouldInterceptRequest%28android.webkit.WebView,%20java.lang.String%29
or
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebViewClient.html#shouldInterceptRequest%28android.webkit.WebView,%20android.webkit.WebResourceRequest%29

to recognize your .css/.js URL or WebResourceRequest and read them from the
assets directory
(or wherever you locally storing them) and return them. Register that
WebViewClient (with
setWebViewClient) with your WebView before you load your website, and you
should be good to go.

[android-developers] Customize MediaController

I have searched the forums and docs and can not find out how to customize
the MediaController. I have it working for the playback of a streaming

elapsed time, pause and play. However I want to swap out the >> and <<
buttons and replace them with SKIP buttons as well as set the skip amount
15, sec, 30 sec, 60 seconds. Anyone help on pointing me on where to find
this information?

Can someone tell me if this line in the code actually rewrites the image

It would be great to fix the orientation and resize the image before being

[android-developers] Where in code would i resize an image taken using intent?

2015-04-10 Thread Dan Cha
So ive been reading a few posts some using Bitmap.createScaledBitmap, some
using .compress feature and each one i try, never throws an exception or
error, but file never gets resized.

I found this routine, but it doesnt do anything as far as the image taken.
So basically within my app i allow the user to take a pic to attach to the
submission.
When you take the image, it displays a thumbnail on the screen, at this
point the image is already saved to the phones gallery.
I need to resize it (without changing the proportions) to make sure that
the image is no larger than 200px wide or high because once you submit the
form, im uploading the image to our server.

public Bitmap getResizedBitmap(Bitmap bm, int newWidth, int newHeight) {
int width = bm.getWidth();
int height = bm.getHeight();
float scaleWidth = ((float) newWidth) / width;
float scaleHeight = ((float) newHeight) / height;
// CREATE A MATRIX FOR THE MANIPULATION
Matrix matrix = new Matrix();
// RESIZE THE BIT MAP
matrix.postScale(scaleWidth, scaleHeight);

// RECREATE THE NEW BITMAP
Bitmap resizedBitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(bm, 0, 0, width, height, matrix,
false);
return resizedBitmap;}

When the user clicks the image button on the screen, the camera opens and
allows them to take the pic, ive tried to call the above routine within this
event after everything so that i know the file is created and exists.

Here is the event for that:

private ImageButton.OnClickListener takePicture_Button_listener = new
ImageButton.OnClickListener()
{
public void onClick(View v)
{
StrictMode.setThreadPolicy(new StrictMode.ThreadPolicy.Builder()
.detectDiskReads()
.detectDiskWrites()
.detectNetwork()
.penaltyLog()
.build());
// create Intent to take a picture and return control to the
calling application
Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE);

//User fileUri for full path to image taken.
fileUri = getOutputMediaFileUri(MEDIA_TYPE_IMAGE); // create a file
to save the image
fname =
fileUri.toString().substring(fileUri.toString().lastIndexOf(/)+1);
intent.putExtra(MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, fileUri); // set the image
file name

// start the image capture Intent
startActivityForResult(intent, CAPTURE_IMAGE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE);
}
};

Ive tried to use it here after the previewCapturedImage routine is called and
ive even tried the currently commented out code seen below and neither modify
the file.

protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent
data)
{
if (requestCode == CAPTURE_IMAGE_ACTIVITY_REQUEST_CODE  resultCode ==
RESULT_OK)
{
previewCapturedImage();
//Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(fileUri.getPath());
//getResizedBitmap(bitmap,200,200);
}
else if (resultCode == RESULT_CANCELED)
{
// User cancelled the image capture
Toast.makeText(this, Image Capture Cancelled:\n +
data.getData(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
else
{
// Image capture failed, advise user
Toast.makeText(this, Image Capture Failed:\n +
data.getData(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
}

Where can i properly resize the image, either during or after its taken so that
the actual image stored on the device is within my size requirements and file
size, currently since its not resizing its creating a 4mb file which takes
forever to upload and has some huge dimensions(5213x2988) I just need to make
sure that the full size image is no larger than 200px width or height, it
obvisously needs to keep its proportions, but the max cant be any larger than
200px

[android-developers] Trying to better understand how to add menu's to the pages within my app

2015-04-08 Thread Dan Cha
So within my app currently, we have 3 main pages.

The main home page
A create/submit page
and a view page

Because those pages work off webservice to populate 2 drop downs, i wanted
to create settings/options where the user can manage the data within the
drop down.

So current i have the menu setup in the top left corner of the pages, when
you click that, you get the dropdown menu with a few options..

But something i noticed, is if i chose any item from that menu, and then
chose another menu item and then again another item, only way to get back
to the original window i was on is to hit back x number of times(x being
how ever many menu items i chose to select.

Here is my code to open the new selected menu item:

@Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
Intent intent = new Intent();
switch (item.getItemId())
{
case R.id.action_settings:
intent.setComponent(new ComponentName(ViewInventoryActivity.this,
SettingsActivity.class));
startActivity(intent);
return true;

case R.id.action_about:
intent.setComponent(new
ComponentName(ViewInventoryActivity.this, AboutActivity.class));
startActivity(intent);
return true;
}
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}

What am i doing wrong that i have to hit back so many times to get back to
where i was originally?

[android-developers] Proper way to setup app to notify user(if opt in) when new items are added to database

2015-04-06 Thread Dan Cha
So working on a app that will list inventory items for a few users.. IF the
user opts to be notified, what is the proper way to implement such
notifications?

The app works via a webservice that allows the entry of items and also
returns full list to the user when they select to view.

What would that be considered so i can google the appropriate technique.

thank you

[android-developers] Taking pic from within app and storing is not working 100% of the time

2015-04-04 Thread Dan Cha
When i first implemented the feature in the app, you could take a pic, it
would show the thumbnail within the app and once you submitted the form for
submission, you would see and find the image in your gallery under a folder
for the app.

Now for whatever reason, whenever i take a picture, it doesnt show up or it
doesnt show up instantly like it use to. In some cases the only way to get
it to show up is if i reboot the phone.

Here is what code im using which was samples found online.. (and like i
said, worked great til recently)

Can anyone see what may be the cause?

[android-developers] Best option for uploading image from within app before submitting form data?

2015-04-02 Thread Dan Cha
So im working on a quick and simple app for family members, i need to allow
the upload of a pic to associate with the entry they submit.
So far i have the submission and insert working, but need a solution to
allow the upload of the pic before the submission is actually handled if
the upload works, then allow the submission.

i found a few FTP examples, is that the route to go? if so can i specify
the folder in which to upload the image?

is there other options?

[android-developers] Trying to get the value of the selected spinner item

2015-04-02 Thread Dan Cha
So I have 2 dropdowns in my app, once with list of categories and one with
list of users.
My custom arrayadapter used to bind to the lists contains

id
name

For form submission I need to send the id to the database not the name..
But I cant seem to figure out how to get the value instead of the name.

catid.setName(catid);
catid.setValue(spinCat.getItemAtPosition(spinCat.getSelectedItemPosition()));

This above code that I have now just returns the selected name.

What am I doing wrong?

[android-developers] Sending and receiving SMS within my own app and not show in the built in text app

2015-03-31 Thread Dan Cha
So im working or playing around with sending text/sms from within our app
as well as receiving replies. We will have the app on both ends(sender and
receiver devices)
But right now just prelim testing the messages are sent but they are
showing up as text within the default text app on the phone.

So even though our app sent the message a copy shows up in the default text
app as sent.

I have this in the manifest
receiver android:name=.SMSBReceiver
intent-filter android:priority=999
action
android:name=android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED /
/intent-filter
/receiver

But as soon as the message is sent, its received in the default app. How
can we configure or code our app to send and receive within itself and not
affect the other text app?

Basically we want to contain the text within the app, anything initiated
within the app is only to show up in the app and no other sms app on the
devices.

Is this possible? We dont want copies of the text also showing up in the
users default text app.

thank you

Now with that said, if someone sends a actually text from outside the app,
then it should end up where it normally does for the user.

Hopefully that makes sense.

thank you

[android-developers] Using the picasso image loader within custom adapter and works for only the first image, what am i doing wrong?

2015-03-25 Thread Dan Cha
So after more testing and playing around i was able to figure out where to
place the code, since it would work with the URL returned from the web
service.

Placed it within my adapter, but it only loads the first image for the
first record. From the examples ive found online, i believe it to be within
the view logic in the adapter, but not sure and not sure where to change it.

Here is the entire adapter and what works for the first image/record only,
the rest never show up a image, no matter how long i leave the app open.

Can anyone tell me if you see anything wrong with how i implemented the
image loader?

[android-developers] Unfortunately App has stopped is the error im getting and not sure why, all breakpoints make it thru no problem and then the message.

So i moved these lines to onPostExecute and it loads my page with the
appropriate number of rows, but nothing is populated.
In the items there are the 26 rows that should be returned, and now the
page loads 26 rows but no data is seen on the page.

[android-developers] Looking for good example / code tutorial on adding a function in my app to take pic and save/upload it to server within my app.

2015-03-17 Thread Dan Cha
So im working on a personal app that i can take a pic, provide a few bits
of data and save all the information to my DB and upload the image taken to
the server.

i found this information:
http://developer.android.com/training/camera/photobasics.html

After reading thru this page, if i understood correctly, i will HAVE to
save the image first to the device then i can upload it?

i was hoping to accomplish something similar to the take picture option
when you have a MMS that you are sending a picture.
Within the MMS app, you can click the paperclip image, select take
picture take it, confirm you want to attach and it does so and sends when
you hit send.
I mean it does seem to save that picture anyway to the device, but id like
to accomplish the same thing, where its all done within my app.

Is there another site or tutorial that would have something similar?

Is this the best way to accomplish this task?

Android Studio doesn't provide the option to install for an individual user

[android-developers] Looking to see if adding the ability to swipe left to right is possible with our current app we are creating

2014-09-25 Thread Dan Cha
We have a app that we are working on that once you login to the app, you
have a few buttons you can choose from, once you select one, it displays a
listview with a custom adapter layout of all the records available.
You can then click on any of the records and are taken to a detail page
where you can view the full details for that record. Currently if you want
to chose another record you have to go back to the list and pick.
We would like to keep that, but also see if its possible to allow the user
to swipe left or right to scroll thru all the detail pages for the other
records..

is something like that possible?

[android-developers] How to make buttons within horizontal scrollview the width of the screen

2014-09-19 Thread Dan Cha

I have following layout, I would like to make it so that my 3 buttons each
display individually on the page.
Basically since I only have 3 buttons I would like it so when I select /
click one, that button is centered and expands the width of the page
then the other buttons show slightly so the user understands that there is
more to see if they scroll ..

I found this example online of how mine looks, but would like to see if its
possible to make it as described.

[android-developers] Double ID error when sending a value to web service via KSAOP

2014-09-17 Thread Dan Cha
If I get the value from my list select item on the previous page which is
stored in the extras, like this, I DO get the correct value, but as soon as
it makes it to the line where the .Call is made, it throws the exception
SoapObject request = new SoapObject(WSDL_TARGET_NAMESPACE,METHOD_NAME);
SoapSerializationEnvelope envelope = new
SoapSerializationEnvelope(SoapEnvelope.VER11);

PropertyInfo reqid = new PropertyInfo();

Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras();
if(extras != null)
{
 valReqid = extras.getString(reqid);
 sesCookie = extras.getString(mSessionHeader);
}
reqid.setName(id);
reqid.setValue(valReqid);

request.addProperty(reqid);

envelope.dotNet = true;
envelope.setOutputSoapObject(request);

HttpTransportSE httpTransport = new HttpTransportSE(URL);

try
{
 ListHeaderProperty reqHeaders = new LinkedListHeaderProperty();
 reqHeaders.add(new HeaderProperty(Cookie, sesCookie));
 httpTransport.call(SOAP_ACTION, envelope,
(ListHeaderProperty)reqHeaders);

If change the valReqid to an int instead, it always returns 0, but of
course it makes it past the .call but then cant find the properties because
there is nothing returned.
If it helps or matters, the web service returns a struct

Re: [android-developers] return object or listobject

2014-08-05 Thread Dan
I'm guessing your colleague felt that something where a response
of 0 things to operate on is not an error condition it is easier to
deal with a 0 entry list, for example:

public int getFooTotalValue() {
int fooTotal = 0;
ListFoo fooList = getFooList();
for (Foo afoo : fooList ) {
 fooTotal += afoo.getValue();
}
return fooTotal;
}

Handles the 0 length case without any checks. (Works nice for
totals, or do an operation on a foo loops, not so well for average,
or search for mean/median type loops.) It's nice in that it doesn't
make assumptions about what the List consuming code considers
an acceptable response. If you are prescient and know that every
possible consumer of the getFooList() result MUST have at least
one entry or it's an exceptional condition, I suppose you could go
with the NPE check, but I tend to feel that in isolation

if (!fooList.isEmpty()) {
}

gives me more information than

if (fooList != null) {
}

or the even more compact

if (fooList) {
}

As the isEmpty() case I know the list was set up correctly and I didn't
process fooList because there were no foo, where the !=null case could
be some initialization issue with foo (in the case of reading a file to
fill foo, I might want fooList = null for error condition of no/improperly
formatted file, empty list for read the file and found no foo.)

 Which is better to implement for the method:
 1. Is it better to have the method return an object.
 2. Or return ListObject where the single object is added to the array
 list.

 because, we can check for list.isEmpty() which is better than
 object!=null. not sure which one is better.

[android-developers] Is it possible to track mileage with the GPS on the phone?

I'm looking to better track my own personal mileage on my truck.. so was
looking into the GPS module and seems it may be possible, but wanted to ask
before spending to much time building something that will never work.
since this is going to be for my personal usage, it is going to be a simple
app that ill turn on when in the truck and have it track my miles for the
day and so on..

I know sounds like a pain to have to turn it on and off but since this is a
work that can be part of our daily routine to log everything, turn on app
and so on..

any links to good source would be great if this is possible..

[android-developers] Is it possible to access text messages to back up as they are received?

2013-12-11 Thread Dan Cha
Im not using any 3rd party app for my text, but I do use one to back up my
text before I delete them, so im wondering if there is a way I can build a
app for myself to access my text, when I send or receive a text, the
message is backed up and within a certain period of time its removed from
my phone.

Ive seen similar apps, but being im a developer, rather make my own and
learn in the process.

[android-developers] How to access the call history to delete based on variable

2013-12-06 Thread Dan Cha
Im sure there are plenty of apps out there that you can install to manage
your calls and that's great.
Im just looking to create my own app catered to my needs (wants) without
all the extra stuff.
And being a developer, I rather attempt it myself.

So what im trying to do is the following:

Since I have the standard app that stores the call history, in order to
delete the logs is do a complete delete or select each one and delete one
at a time. I have no option to select multiples.

So I would like to build an app, either outside of the phone log / history
that displays the same list with check boxes to do a multiple select.. OR
create something I can just filter based on caller and delete that way..

Can the call log be accessed and how?

thank you

[android-developers] Re: android proguard is not working for the that is activated by the reflection?

2013-09-27 Thread Dan
Look for proguard-project.txt in your android project directory (with the
AndroidManifest.xml
and various other .properites files.)

Pick one of the keywords to avoid having classes/members mangled by
proguard to
protect whatever you are calling/want called back:

http://proguard.sourceforge.net/index.html#manual/examples.html

proguard will re-name everything it can, and will do (what it thinks is)
dead code
removal (which it can only guess at what outside code might want to run in
your
code, and often gets it wrong.) The -keep options in the configuration
file will
tell proguard not to obfuscate the name or remove the code (if it thinks
it's unused.)

[android-developers] Is it possible to create an app that displays image gallery from a website?

2013-05-28 Thread Dan Cha
So im trying to build an app for my sisters photography business. Currently
she offers her clients a Sessions area on her site that the client can
login to after they have their photos taken.
This login is available to them for 2week periods where they can review the
photos and order what they want.

What i'd like to try to do is make an app that mimics that setup. So is it
possible to create an app, that can login to the site, and display the
gallery on the phone(as long as they have internet access) so they dont
have to be on a pc?

If so, can any one point me to some good samples or tutorials on how to
accomplish?

thanks/

[android-developers] Create an app to store a list of values locally on the phone/device

2013-05-22 Thread Dan Cha
Ive looked around and found only a few apps kinda close to what im trying
to do and few good examples on how to successfully setup SQL lite or
whatever database to tie to the app to store the values on the phone/device.

What im trying to make is a very simple app for now that is just a long
list of entries so that my daughter can reference it as she needs.

So for this first version i want to setup a local db that will be stored
with the app on the phone/device.
Setup a simple entry form with 1 or 2 fields, submit and now you have a
list.

Maybe give the ability to search or sort the list as it will grow into over
hundred entries.

Can anyone offer a good site or online example of setting up such a app,
not looking for someont to do it, just a sample site that shows how to link
a db to your app so that values can be stored.

thank you

 We have enabled the root permissions to Mobile phone and created APK using

It would help if you could provide the error you are facing.

 Please let me know how to resolve this. Thanks for your support.

 Also please let me how to cross compile my applications in android and try

[android-developers] How to redesign this basic page to be a little more??

2013-05-04 Thread Dan Cha
Right now i have a very simple page, that has a ScrollView with a TextView
within it to display results that are returned by my webservice.

I have all the code posted here in another Thread for another issue:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=enfromgroups#!topic/android-developers/ubmVCCW8nZI

I can post here, but figured for now ill just link to it.

Anyway, the returned results from the webservice are within a SoapObject
response = (SoapObject)envelope.bodyIn;
Then i loop thru and build a StringBuilder with the results to make it
readable.

But that is not very nice, so id like to know what route to take in order
to populate say maybe a grid or something to have it little easier to read
and manage
, maybe allowing for paging so that they arent scrolling forever once alot
of records are in the database.

thanks,

[android-developers] Proper way to request an email or whatever data at first load of the app

2013-05-01 Thread Dan Cha
I have an app, that ive been working on from time to time. And now that its
more stable, im working on improvements and changes to help make it better.
So one of those things is to request an email address to use when pulling
up history data, which would be specific to the individual using the app.

I dont want to automatically gather the email, as they may not want to use
that for the purpose of the app, so would rather present a popup or
something
that prompts them before they can use the app to supply a email, then from
that point forward, when data is submitted that email is passed along in
the insert
and now the history data would be displayed for only them.

Currently, since this was just a test app and working thru making it
better, if you chose to view history, you will see ALL submitted data for
anyone.

Can someone offer suggestion on what i need to focus on like a certain
method to accomplish this, or maybe provide liinks to sites that may show
exactly what im asking about.

thank you

[android-developers] Please help.. Noob... Android Emulator sucks

2013-04-29 Thread Dan
So the android emulator is a complete dog. I would say it's a good 2
minutes before
it's done loading up and sometimes when I go to close it down, it just
stops responding.

I then found out about the Intel Atom (x86) approach and somehow that's
frickin worse!!?!?!
Sometimes it doesn't even load beyond the window frame.

Can someone please help me with some suggestions?

I run a Mac Mini with Mac OSX 10.7.5, 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB Ram.

Using Eclipse, downloaded most recent SDK from Android Developer site,
installed the Intel X86 etc.

Any help would be appreciated as Im completely frustrated at the lack of
direction from Android themselves.

Thanks guys

I'm at a loss to understand how you could read that to mean the OPs intent

Perhaps you are being intentionally thick headed (in an attempt to maintain
your misunderstanding of something that seems clear to me.)There are
alternate definitions in that list. Look up something like a didactic
class, they
don't have to provide a moral lesson, and the adjective doesn't have to be
derogatory, e.g.:

http://depts.washington.edu/pulmcc/education/medstudent/

Somehow I don't think a didactic lecture on the respiratory system would
match your misreading of the definition that limits it's use to things such
as Pilgrim's Promise.

If you choose to convert code across platforms with the intent to learn (and
doing so gives you lots of ways to learn vs. the standard go google it
answer),
the exercise can be didactic. Why the original author wrote the code has no
effect how it's used to learn.

I suspect the OP is more clever than I am for recognizing your linguistic
baiting for what it was vs. my attempt to enlighten you. I'll leave you to
your torturous misuse of the language and misguided nit picking.

Just to confirm your double check of the definition matches what
other folks might be using:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/didactic

Reading and converting someone else's source between 2 platforms

what is used on the two platforms.I think that fits for intended to

[android-developers] (Need Advice) Getting started creating 3d live wallpapers

2013-04-22 Thread dan
Hello Everyone,

I'm thinking about starting to develop live wallpapers for Android platform
and I need a point in the right direction to start. I'm interested in
making live wallpapers using 3d assets, like the game engines I'm used to
working in and producing for.

Example: http://www.livewallpapers.org/forest-hd-8813/

From what I have been able to dig up on my own googling there are some code
tutorials I can follow to set up the file structure I need to mount the
wallpaper and view it in the SDK however I don't see more details on how to
work in a 3d environment.

I'm used to engines like Unreal, Unity, and Hammer where I'm importing
exported 3d files, setting up shaders, and applying textures then running.

Any advice is very much appreciated, thank you!

 Anyone encountered this issue?

Real devices sleep* (shut down the application processor and only wake
up for alarms or on request by the radio processor.) To confirm that the
sleep is the issue, plug the device into USB and check the developer
option to keep the screen on while charging and see if your calls still
happen every 20 seconds (if it's still arbitrary, you have some other
bug.)

Read up on wake locks and alarms if you need to wake it from that sleep.

Note that battery use while awake is close to rate of use for talk time
(full to empty) and while asleep is close to standby, so keeping it awake
will drain the battery much sooner.

* note that the term sleep is overloaded and I only use it because there
isn't a preferred term for when the processor shuts down when you don't
hold a partial wake lock (vs when the screen goes blank but the processor
still gets cycles.) My use isn't related to any language sleep function
but intended to describe large periods of time where the application
processor
doesn't get cycles to do things because the OS has shut things down and
no wake locks or partial wake locks are being held.

 In

  is used most.

  And keeping track means that you need to poll that data in regular
 intervals
  (once an hour or something like that). You should use AlarmManager for
 that

I'd actually suggest listeners for Intent.ACTION_SCREEN_OFF and
Intent.ACTION_SCREEN_ON so you don't wake the device from deep
sleep and only register the alarm when the screen is on.

The biggest battery cost is going from the radio processor only on mode
to application processor + screen running (that's why you have a so/so
number for talk time and a big number for standby) and if you can avoid
pulling the device from standby (and letting other things grab cycles as
well)
that's a much bigger optimization than grabbing fewer cycles when
the device is already awake and will have a similar use pattern to reading
the
logcat (which would have happened only while the application processor
was awake) vs. an every hour alarm that might wake the device 6 to 10
times a night to record that the user isn't doing anything.

 An app only has access to its own logs in the latest version of Android,

that would allow people
to avoid hacks, maybe an* *extension/analog to:

[android-developers] The new CellInfo API

2013-01-28 Thread Dan
I saw:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/CellInfo.html

and thought that having the signal strength tower ID and in use and
neighboring
towers all in one callback would be nice to have. I wrote a test program
to see
if I could get this CellInfoGsm on a Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4. Snippet of
test
code follows:

@Override
public void onCreate() {
// Notification to not get killed
Log.d(CellInfoTest,Service onCreate);
mNotification = buildNotification();
startForeground(5,mNotification);

((NotificationManager)getSystemService(NOTIFICATION_SERVICE)).notify(5,mNotification);
mListener = new PhoneStateListener() {
public void onCellInfoChanged(ListCellInfo c) {
Log.d(CellInfoTest,onCellInfoChanged
called);
dumpCellInfoList(c);
}
public void onCellLocationChanged(CellLocation c) {
Log.d(CellInfoTest,onCellLocationChanged
called);

dumpCellLocation(c);
}
};
myTm =
(TelephonyManager)getSystemService(Context.TELEPHONY_SERVICE);

}

private void dumpCellInfoList(ListCellInfo c) {
try {
for (int i = 0; i  c.size(); i++) {

Log.d(CellInfoTest,dumpInfoLocation:+c.get(i).toString());
}
} catch (java.lang.NullPointerException e) {
Log.d(CellInfoTest,Null pointer for CellInfo);
}
}

private void dumpCellLocation(CellLocation c) {
try {

Log.d(CellInfoTest,dumpCellLocation:+c.toString());
} catch (java.lang.NullPointerException e) {
Log.d(CellInfoTest,Null pointer for
CellLocation);
}
}

@Override
public int onStartCommand(Intent i, int flags, int startid){
Log.d(CellInfoTest,Service onStartCommand);
myTm.listen(mListener,
PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CELL_INFO +
PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CELL_LOCATION);
return START_STICKY;
}

I've also included

 uses-sdk  android:minSdkVersion=17 /
 uses-permission android:name=android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION/

in the manifest to be sure I was on an updated phone that supported the API
and could see
the cell location information. I gathered the adb logcat output and
toggled the airplane mode
a few times to see what got called back. I'm seeing:

01-25 19:04:31.516 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): Starting service
01-25 19:04:31.526 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): Service onCreate
01-25 19:04:31.526 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): Service onStartCommand
01-25 19:04:31.536 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellLocationChanged called
01-25 19:04:31.536 D/CellInfoTest( 7999):

01-25 19:04:31.536 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellInfoChanged called
01-25 19:04:31.536 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): Null pointer for CellInfo
01-25 19:04:58.935 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellLocationChanged called
01-25 19:04:58.935 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): dumpCellLocation:[10989,-1,418]
01-25 19:04:59.826 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellLocationChanged called
01-25 19:04:59.826 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): dumpCellLocation:[-1,-1,-1]
01-25 19:04:59.956 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellLocationChanged called
01-25 19:04:59.966 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): dumpCellLocation:[-1,-1,0]
01-25 19:05:00.857 D/CellInfoTest( 7999): onCellLocationChanged called
01-25 19:05:00.857 D/CellInfoTest( 7999):
dumpCellLocation:[10989,194036662,418]

which looks like as soon as I register I get a callback, but the CellInfo
is null (which
I think is very odd, as it should at least contain the location/strength of
the cell that
is currently connected and dumped by dumpCellLocation) each of the
callbacks that
follow happen with the airplane mode toggle an only for
onCellLocationChanged.

My questions are:

Is there a flaw in my code that I am missing?
Is there a permission that I need to get the onCellInfoChanged callback to
happen?
If my code looks good, who do I look to to ask why the Galaxy Nexus and
Nexus 4
both fail to make the callbacks (is there a CTS case update that needs to
happen,
or should I file a bug against the android code?)

[android-developers] untracked pid exited

2012-10-05 Thread Dan McLeran
I am running Android ICS 4.0.3 on a Blaze phone platform. I built rsync

[android-developers] Re: untracked pid exited

2012-10-05 Thread Dan McLeran
I was able to get around this by changing my command string to include su
-c (i.e. su -c ./rsync ..).

Not sure if this is a good solution or not though.

I am pretty sure that's not right.

http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gccint/Configure-Terms.html

build - arch of machine compiling the gcc tools
host - arch of machine that will run the compiler to make things
target - arch of the machine that will run the code the compiler makes

If I'm building the ndk from the google AOSP project on an x86 linux
machine for a windows machine to build .so files that go on an arm

build - linux x86
host - win32
target - armeabi

If I only download the ndk, you won't care about the build system
somebody used to compile only the host (will it run on my dev

there some special action that should be taken to make it so the public

for some reason.)

[android-developers] TTS when recieve call

in the oncreate function i call:

  tm.listen(mPhoneListener, PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE);

here is he implementation of the phonestatelistener:

private PhoneStateListener mPhoneListener = new
PhoneStateListener() {

  @SuppressLint(SdCardPath)
public void onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) {

   try {
switch (state) {
case TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING:

 Toast.makeText(HandsFree.this, CALL RING, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

 startService(new Intent(HandsFree.this,TTS.class));

public static class TTS extends Service implements

private TextToSpeech mTts;
private String spokenText=hello;

@Override

[android-developers] Detect eth0 Plugged In

2012-09-25 Thread Dan McLeran
What's the best way to detect the eth0 cable plugged in? I don't really
want to monitor via some kind of bash script or something. Is there an
event listener or something which I can use?

[android-developers] Re: Accelerometer range

2012-09-18 Thread Dan Reznik
Ted I would love to switch the range on my galaxy s3 to +/- 4 or 8g. The
chip used by the S3 appears to be the SMB380

Have you had any luck on this matter over the last year?

Dan

 I am writing an app that uses accelerometer. After some testings I
 noticed that the range of values that the app shows is -2g to 2g.
 http://www.bosch-sensortec.com/content/ ... Rev1.3.pdf states that the
 range can be switched. How do I switch it to 4g?
