[android-developers] Doc to PDF

2008-04-14 Thread Harsh Jain
Hi,
 Apologies for a total unrelated topic. But I am writing my docs in .doc
(msword) and I dont have a PDF converter. If anyone has it and is kind
enough for converting my docs to pdf, please reply me personally.

Thanks a lot,
Harsh

[android-developers] Re: Taking care of proxy Internet access for Dev Challenge?

2008-04-11 Thread Harsh Jain
BUMP. Cant we expect judges to just use -http-proxy flag ? I have not taken
care of proxy issues in my app. Please let us know.

Regards,
harsh

 Is there an offical answer from google regarding this?

 I would rather not have to care about this, since it is difficult to
 test this anyway. I would have to set up a proxy and so on.

 I think I will not handle proxy access in my app and rather add a note
 to my readme file, that my prototype requires direct internet access.

 (Android is beta anyway, so they can't require complete nifty
 outprogrammed solutions anyway - with the next sdk api release we
 would have to make migrations/changes anyway)

 Greetings,
 Joos

[android-developers] Re: Queries on ADC Submission

2008-04-10 Thread Harsh Jain
I would say go ahead, it atleast wouldnt hurt. If your unimplemented ideas
are really cool, that may impress judges.

 Hi,

 I am developing an application on Android with the help of my friend,
 Due to some reasons we started development slight later than we had
 planned, now we are in the mid of development, I am not sure that we
 will be able to submit the application with all features we
 conceptualized.

 So now my questions are

 1) Will it be acceptable if we submit the application in as a
 functional prototype, means application will show the basic concept
 and functionality, but some features might be inactivated. In Product
 specification document we will mention all the Product features.

 2) If Yes for question 1 then when can we submit the second full
 featured version of Application.

 3) If i mention the application features in the document but not
 implemented or might be inactive in prototype, will i get the points
 for those inactive features in terms of innovation.

 For example if I Submit Google map application with
 a. Map Browsing,
 b. Current location Display
 c. Places marking,

 but features like
 e. Share location with a friend,
 f. Traffic
 g. friend location
 are in inactive in menu items.

 Will this kind of Entry be acceptable and application get the marks
 for inactive features also?

 Please guide us on this.

 Thanks
 Abhishek

IMO, you cant. For instance, ContentObservers/Resolvers works only with
android.net.Uri.

Hi,
 I am aware of this. However My framework is an android project, The messy
way is to move all code, manually merge manifest and other xml files. I was
looking for some nice easy way.

 Hi Harsh,

 As long as you have only one Android Project, you can reference other
 java project, and their code will get bundled into the Android project
 when it is built.

 Right click your project in the Package Explorer view, and choose
 Build Path  Configure Build Path...
 Select the Projects tab on the right and then add projects that are
 in your workspace.

[android-developers] Cant created non-interactive ListView

2008-04-02 Thread Harsh Jain
Hi,
 I need to create a list view, which doesnt response to user interactions,
it should be non-clickable, and user should not be able to scroll through
it.
I tried the following
ListView lv = getListView();
lv.setClickable(false);
lv.setFocusable(false);
lv.setDividerHeight(0);
lv.setItemsCanFocus(false);

But I am still able to navigate the list using key pad and am also able to
click through it. I even tried lv.setEnabled(false), which only makes it
grey but i am still able to scroll through it. Please advice.

Regards,
harsh

[android-developers] Re: Cant created non-interactive ListView

2008-04-02 Thread Harsh Jain
I use the list view to display a constantly changing list of items from an
SQL table. Using ListView lets me use the cursor adapters which keep the
view in sync automatically. But I guess I will go with your suggestion as
using a simple view may be more efficient.

harsh

[android-developers] Re: Line separator (between views/controls on activity page)

You can do a ListView.setDivider(Drawable d). or ListView.setDividerHeight.

 Btw Harish, ListView.setDivider sets the divider between individual
 lines within the listview and wouldn't be applicable to a separator
 between a listview and other controls.

[android-developers] Re: Android Developers Challenge!

2008-04-01 Thread Harsh Jain
 http://code.google.com/android/adc_faq.html#kinds

 I have to say, I never understood this particular phrase of the
 competition suggestions: Those poor people will never ever see an
 Android phone. How could it help them? On the contrary, I find this

That's so much away from reality. I have myself lived on a 40$ cell phone
spending less than 5$ monthly for my voice plans. The voice plans in my
country are cheap and cell phones are so common. Having a cool phone is like
a cult. For a poor farmer its like owning a car and they take pride in it.
If android can make a phone more than just a way to communicate, Thats a
great thing.

However, if android is only going to run on iphone-like phones, yes not many
people are going to use it. But I guess a reason to have an open and free
operating system is to make phones affordable.

regards,
harsh

 particular statement a rather tasteless attempt to salve the
 conscience of those who have the money to buy an Android phone

 Or do I understand the statement wrongly? Some example how this could
 be meant or implemented could help to clarify this. How do other
 people understand this statement?

[android-developers] Pooling of Objects in Android

2008-04-01 Thread Harsh Jain
Hi,
 Is there a generic android way of pooling objects ? I typically tend to
reuse objects by avoiding threads and ensuring the access pattern is
synchronous, but in some cases its totally unavoidable, for example in a
Service implementation all methods I have to pass a bulky object as
Message.obj from service to handler.

class BulkyObject {

}

class MyBinder extends MyBinder.Stub {
  public void doOne() {
BulkyObject b1 = new BulkyObject();
b1.setStuff();
sendMessageToHandler(Message.obtain(ACTION, b1));
  }

  public void doTwo() {
BulkyObject b2 = new BulkyObject();
b2.setStuff();
sendMessageToHandler(Message.obtain(ACTION, b2));
  }

}

In this case a lot of new Bulkyobjects are wasted. Any ideas ?

harsh

[android-developers] Re: Handler Design Advice : Which is better ?

2008-03-24 Thread Harsh Jain
Thanks, also I couldnt find this in documentation anywhere, but should you
call msg.recycle() at the end in handleMessage() or the guy who calls
handleMessage does it automatically.

harsh

 It is more efficient to create one Handler that takes care of a bunch
 of events, than separate inner class Runnables for each of them. So I
 would suggest something like this:

  static final int MSG1 = 1;
  static final int MSG2 = 2;

  void do1() {
  }

  void do2() {
  }

  final Handler mHandler = new Handler() {
void handleMessage(Message m) {
  switch (m.what) {
case MSG1: do1(); break;
case MSG2: do2(); break;
  }
}
  }

 In the examples below, if the Handler is only going to do one thing,
 then there is no difference really between it and a Runnable, so I
 would suggest using a Runnable. But ideally you would do something
 like the above, a Handler that does multiple things. And you can
 structure that however you want -- as an anonymous inner class like
 this, as a regular inner class, as a separate class, etc.

  w.r.t andoid which of the two is better..
  a) Implement runnables as inner classes and post it to a handler. Note
 here
  variables can be directly accessed.

  class AService {
   String x, y, z; // packaged scope for efficient access.

   class B implements Runnable {
void run() {
  x = y + z ;// do something with x,y,z
}
}

onCreate() {
 mWorker.handler.postRunnable(new B());
 }

  }

  b) Create a MyHandler extending handler and receive messages and
 translate
  them to the appropriate action.

  class MyHandler extends Handler {
   AService a;
   public MyHandler(AService a) { }

   void action1() {
   a.x = a.y + a.z // Do something with a's inner variables.
   }

  void handleMessage(Message w) {
  action1();
  }

  }

  I guess people know what i mean.
