Re: [android-developers] Important question

2016-03-06 Thread Michael Banzon
You can make programs any way you like. Android Studio is the preferred way
- it runs on both Windows, OSX and Linux. I think you'll find it very
difficult to write Android apps using only a browser (I'm assuming that is
what you meant).

I think you should look into the process of actually making the apps before
paying for anything. Making apps for Android doesn't cost money. Testing
them on you device, other devices, emulators etc. doesn't cost money.
Distributing you app through Google Play cost some money though - but that
part is only needed when you are "done".

Re: [android-developers] where does Android Studio put the APK file?

2015-04-28 Thread Michael Banzon
I have located mine in the Project Folderappbuildoutputs folder.

The folder contain two apk-files: app-dedub.apk and
app-debug-unaligned.apk.

On Mon, Apr 27, 2015 at 9:48 PM Jim Graham spooky1...@gmail.com wrote:

 Ok, I give up All of the posts (StackOverflow, etc.) I've found that
 tell me where Android Studio puts the apk file after a Build Project or

 Where, after a successful project build in Android Studio, do I find the
 unsigned apk (in this case, listViewTest.apk) to load onto my various
 Android devices (cp to ~/Dropbox and side-load from each)? This is
 driving me nuts. It does build with no errors, and says the build
 was completed. But where is the apk file it generates? One says it's
 in app/build/outputs/apk/name.apk ... but app/build/outputs/apk doesn't
 even exist, which makes it a bit difficult for the apk to be there.

 Thanks,

Re: [android-developers] AppStore emulation tools?

2014-01-12 Thread Michael Banzon
I don't understand the problem.

Installation usually don't do anything special - I haven't encountered
anything that doesn't happen with adb install as well.

Regarding the permissions - the user is prompted to accept the permissions.
On updates new ones are highlighted. You need only to install a few
applications from Google Play to map all possible scenarios with proper
screen shots etc.

[android-developers] Selected a contact phone number

2013-11-17 Thread Michael Banzon
Hi all,

I am trying to get a contact with a phone number and so far I haven't found
a reliable way to do this. I launch the standard activity for picking a
contact using this snippet:

Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI);
startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_CONTACT_NUMBER);

In my onActivityResult method I do this (from examples from SO etc.):

if (REQUEST_CONTACT_NUMBER == requestCode) {
if (resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK) {
Uri contactData = data.getData();
Cursor c = getContentResolver().query(contactData, null, null, null, null);
if (c.moveToFirst()) {
String id =
c.getString(c.getColumnIndexOrThrow(ContactsContract.Contacts._ID));
String hasPhone =
c.getString(c.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.Contacts.HAS_PHONE_NUMBER));

if (hasPhone.equalsIgnoreCase(1)) {
Cursor phones = getContentResolver().query(
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI, null,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTACT_ID +  =  + id,
null, null);
if (phones.moveToFirst()) {
String number =
phones.getString(phones.getColumnIndex(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.NUMBER));
this.numberEditText.setText(number);
return;
}
}
}
}
Toast.makeText(this, No number, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}

The activity that launches show a lot more contacts than expected - every
person is shown once per phone number or email eg. - many of the contacts
is shown three to five times - and only one of these will result in an
actual phone number being returned. Some contacts even return the email
address!

If I launch the activity using this:

Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
ContactsContract.Contacts.CONTENT_URI);
intent.setType(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_TYPE);
startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_CONTACT_NUMBER);

It seems that every contact is only shown once - and if chosen the contact
picker prompts to select the correct part (phone, email, etc.) - but no
matter what I select nothings actually gets returned - it always toasts
the text No number.

I just need a reliable and simple (to the user) way to pick a contact and
get the phone number into the app - any help or reference for more
information would be much appreciated ;-)

Dear Mohd,

Thank you for your reply.

It seems that the code you provided query to get the name and phone number

As a side note: Please don't use catch with the Exception master class. And
e.printStackTrace() won't do much on (standard) Android ;-)

I get around 20 of these messages each day from a handful senders. It seems
they are 'rotating' company/e-mail/name and I seriously doubt it will have
any impact reporting it as the service they provide is easily
copied/continued under a different name/brand.

As far as I can tell Google is working hard to limit the possible impact
the use of these services could cause on the Google Play store (ratings,

Re: [android-developers] Re: Should SQLiteDatabases be limited to 2Gig?

2013-09-19 Thread Michael Banzon
Sorry for turning the discussion in another direction but I have to
ask out of curiosity: What kind of data do you have in the database to
make it 2GB or above?

On Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 7:09 PM, Nathan nathan.d.mel...@gmail.com wrote:
 Also interested in any other reasons I might be getting
 SQLiteDiskIOException disk I/O error (code 1802) at random times in the

 After thinking this was a real breakthrough, I heard back from people saying
 that their database was less than 1 GB anyway. This could be not a real
 problem, or it could be just one of many problems.

 Data from the (singleton) SQliteDatabase can be read from multiple threads,
 but from my best understanding of SQLiteDatabases, reads and writes will
 simply block until they get access.

Re: [android-developers] Re: android can we get current time ?

2013-09-05 Thread Michael Banzon
This depends very much on what is meant by current time. Although my
first reply was a bit short and non-explaining I do stand by it.

If by current time we mean the actual time of day according to
solar/planetary movement - then no - there is no way to be sure what time
it is. The usefulness of this answer depends very much on the reason for
the question. In the old days of program demos etc. for PCs code would be
constructed to allow a demo to run for a day/week/month which would be
broken if the user changed the system clock eg. In the same way a program
on Android relying on the system clock would be pretty messed up when the
user adjust it.

I totally agree that for short time measuring purposes like you describe
using other internal time measurements would be possible.

Re: [android-developers] Android push notification server for enterprise

2013-09-01 Thread Michael Banzon
You need to define what you mean by push.

There are generally two ways that push can be achieved:
1 - Having a open connection that the server can push messages on
2 - Having the client constantly polling the server for messages

afaik the reason we can use Googles servers for push is that the Google
services library/app and/or Gmail/Google Calendar/etc. is in constant
contact with the server(s) and therefore able to get additional messages
for our applications (which would limit the resources needed to receive
push messages in general because many applications are suddenly utilising
a single connection).

It would be very easy for you to implement a background service that polls
a server that you control and therefore achieve the push functionality
without using Googles or any other third party servers. An alternative
solution (for devices that are on a global network and therefore can
utilise the GCM) is to fire empty messages at clients using GCM and then
have the client fetch the actual message from the private server.

Re: [android-developers] Re: close on minimise application

2013-08-16 Thread Michael Banzon
There isn't a way to distinguish the two - unless you specifically start
the other/next activity from within the activity in question.

Please do look into the application service method. You can add methods on
the application service to perform login and logout (possibly with a
timeout) using the onCreate/onPause/onResume eg. methods of your other
activities.

 It is not right.

 take mbanzon's idea - each activity will need to request the password
 if needed.
 You can do it easily by extending an activity with code that handles
 that, then having all the needed activities inherit from it.

 No crashes, just... behaving oddly, and only on 5% of the devices. The code

 the way that the code is being generated. I haven't figured it out yet, but
 I'm digging into things with apktool and I'm seeing a lot of differences
 with the generated classes from the same class files, which I find strange
 because the Proguard config that I'm feeding in is the same. Unfortunately,
 I have to go back to manual builds with Eclipse for now due to this issue.

 Does anyone else have any similar experiences or insight into this? Are
 the Eclipse / Gradle builds using different build tools behind the scenes
 which could lead to differences in the generated code and cause some files
 to be mis-generated? Thank you!

 function/method to check if a given string is an URL? If it is, any
 documentation?

 Make yourself familiar with regular expressions and try to evaluate the
 input string for matching known URL address patterns. The problem here is,
 that your pattern matching must not be strict. So you also need to allow
 input like

 www.domain.com
 domain.com

 without http(s) protocol prefix which will be the most likely user input.
 Unfortunately that is a malformed URL and you need to auto-complete it so it
 gets valid:

 www.domain.com -- http://www.domain.com/

 Everything that does not match your URL pattern should be treated as
 search query. You could pass on that query to Google or whatever search
 engine of your choice.

 I have managed to add a search box on my form by using the menu xml which

 I was wondering if there was an easy way to do websearch (if the entered
 term is not a webresource) or to display the webpage if the search term is
 correct ... rather like how the native browser does it on android.

 Thank you.

Re: [android-developers] Control temperature in software

2013-08-01 Thread Michael Banzon
Are you talking about deviced overheating from running apps using the
standard SDK/API? (no root) I am not sure I have encountered such
problems - but _warm_ devices and _rebooting_ devices are not
uncommon.

Out of curiosity - how big a problem is this? Any specific numbers or
devices it is limited to? I am tempted to say that it clearly should
be a device maker problem - but hardware updates are a bit tricky to
deploy ;-)

 Questions: Can an application disable specific sensors (not the same as stop

 temperature sensor, and external temperature sensor for user applications?

 All other crazy/wacky thoughts are welcomed, with the proviso that they can
 be coded.

 Thanks.

Re: [android-developers] Can't always get unique identifier

2013-07-24 Thread Michael Banzon

 But it seems now, that a handful of users, notably those using T-mobile,
 have phones that will not yield the above ID.

 So I was wondering whether there was some other unique identifier
 I could use, or failing that, would like to here suggestions on
 generating an identifier that would (almost?) never be a duplicate.

 I was thinking of using the time to the millisecond that the app was first
 run, plus some random digits. Still, I thought that there might be a more
 standard
 practice or library for this.

 Thanks!

Re: [android-developers] Run http server in android

It is quite possible - but:

Another alternative is to set up a local wireless network containing a

networking and the right software. By doing this you can connect
through the proxy running on the computer and debug communication in a
bit more (IMHO) convenient way.

 I can see that the apahce libraries only contain objects that allow you to
 create requests and handle responses but not how i can create a mini http
 server.

Re: [android-developers] How to get phone current location

2013-06-19 Thread Michael Banzon
(language issues aside)

No. If the only thing you have is a phone number - there is no way for
you (not a network operator/NSA) to know the location. Please do
consider that the location of a phone number implies a great deal of
things that isn't really that smart. First thing that comes to mind is
call forwarding when phones are turned off - along with virtual
numbers/PBX.

If you want to make an Android app that uses the built in GPS and/or
location services: Yes - it is very much possible. You should be able
to find (almost) everything you need with the link I provided.
Searching for android location services example using your favourite
search engine should also give you plenty of stuff to work with.

Re: [android-developers] How to generate unique Random Numbers between 1 to 9

2013-06-19 Thread Michael Banzon
First: This isn't really a question related to Android development.

Second: Random unique numbers between 1 and 9 (including both
extremes) is a set of 9 numbers (I really hope that we are talking
about integers and not real/floating point numbers).

Third: If you request a unique sequence of numbers 1 to 9 it can't be
random as it would include a check for uniqueness that would remove
some degree of randomness.

Re: [android-developers] How to generate unique Random Numbers between 1 to 9

2013-06-19 Thread Michael Banzon
My point was simply that if you want me to select a random number, but
hands me of list of numbers I'm not allowed to pick, it can't really
be random. If you limit the length of the number (this is programming
- there is always a limit) there is a maximum of how many random
numbers I can give you ;-)

 OP: you could pull out a statistics book and read about random events,
 how to generate them using coins, etc... But the easiest way is to
 generate a random number, add it to the list if it's not already in
 the list, etc... The uniformity argument works based on the invariant
 that at each stage the next number you choose to fix the rest of
 your choices is random, hence the distribution remains random.

Re: [android-developers] Is it possible to create an app that displays image gallery from a website?

2013-05-28 Thread Michael Banzon
In my honest opinion: You should try and build a website that is more
phone/tablet friendly instead. If you Google responsive html css or
some combination you should be able to find enough resources to get
the project moving. Unless the users/clients of the photo business is
returning and often required to go through the review process I can't
really see why they would want to install a dedicated app on their
phone/tablet. Even if they are returning having a device friendly
website should be a big gain. If the site is build using modern
techniques it should simply be a matter changing the stylesheet.

That being said - it is very much possible to build an app that
require the user to login to view content delivered from a website and
let the user interact with that content in a user-specific manner. You
could watch the presentation from I/O of Google Volley
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhv8l9F44qo) for a quick recap on such
applications.

 What i'd like to try to do is make an app that mimics that setup. So is it
 possible to create an app, that can login to the site, and display the
 gallery on the phone(as long as they have internet access) so they dont have

 If so, can any one point me to some good samples or tutorials on how to

Re: [android-developers] ORM library

2013-05-09 Thread Michael Banzon
I have looked at quite a few ORM libs but have always decided to go
without them.

I think that ORMs works a lot better in dynamic language environments
like PHP and Ruby. That is just my personal opinion - they might work
just fine.

Secondly my main concern when writing apps for Android is the overall
device power consumption that my apps inflict. I have absolutely no
empirical data to support the following statement - but my general
conception is that computing and I/O is very expensive and should be
avoided at all costs. It is also my thought that ORM libs doesn't help
me do as little (especially I/O) as possible.

So - the main reason I have chosen to go without any ORM lib so far is
that weighing the complexity and maintenance of the domain model
against the hand writing and optimizing of SQL clearly favours the
hand-written approach. This is clearly because of a very limited
domain and deeper apps with data only slightly more complex might
benefit greatly from using an ORM lib without taking any significant
performance or battery consumption impact.

The ORM library I have been most pleased with (as far as I remember)
is OrmLite: http://ormlite.com/sqlite_java_android_orm.shtml

If you gather any experience please share - it would be interesting to
hear about cases where using an ORM library saves the day ;-)

On Thu, May 9, 2013 at 2:14 PM, Ryan Bateman secretd...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all,

 querying across object relationships (i.e. get me all users with photos
 should ideally, under the hood, be running one SQLite query).

 Any thoughts or experience appreciated.

Re: [android-developers] download

2013-04-02 Thread Michael Banzon
Yes - in denmark ;-)

Cel-tower connections here have very mixed quality! Two similar phones
(S3) on the same network and even connected to the same tower ID
sometimes gives totally different results. The feeling is that the
networks haven't really been able to follow the smartphone adoption
rate - so whenever too many connections share a single tower
everything goes to hell.

The downloads from Google Play seem to be somewhat unrelated - I have
experienced very slow downloads from the store even on wifi
connections. This must be a Google-issue - and I suppose it makes
sense to throttle bandwith worldwide a bit - though sometimes it just
seem silly ;-)

 I'm pretty sure most of us in the U.S. could download that in under a minute

 is, there is no way to upload changes to the app if I have to fix something.
 Say I upload an apk with version number 1. Google requires that I increase
 the apk number with every upload, so I have to increase the number to 2 to
 change the code, and version 3 to change it again. I may go through
 numerous iterations of development getting the final code in place...but
 none of these are actual new releases, the app isn't even published yet! I
 want the first published version to be version 1, regardless of any initial
 testing and there doesn't seem to be any way to do this. If I delete the
 apk from the app description in the hopes of wiping out the version numbers
 so I can upload an apk with version 1, the ENTIRE app profile is destroyed
 and I have to create a new one from scratch, including the required
 screenshot uploads and other tedium unrelated to testing. This imposes a
 tremendous burden on the debugging process.

 Is there any way to do what I am trying to accomplish here? I am at a loss.

 Thank you.

Re: [android-developers] Problem loading some web pages on some devices

2012-11-30 Thread Michael Banzon
Is there anything special on the pages? Javascript or embedded elements -
some fancy transitions e.g. in CSS?

I'm thinking that the renderer is preventing some advanced stuff on pages
loaded from internet instead of local - where it is trusted.

A possible workaround would be to load the pages yourself and display them
in the way that works?

 do this:

 webview.loadUrl(file:///sdcard/page.html);

 then it works just fine!

 Why on earth it would work when locally yet not work when loaded from the
 Internet I do not know.

 Anyone run into this before and if so, how did you get around it?

Re: [android-developers] hi friends

2012-11-21 Thread Michael Banzon
First: I'm betting that you won't find anyone willing to give you a
complete solution to this very vague problem. If you can ask a more
specific question based on a real problem - not easily solvable by
searching google etc. - people will be more likely to provide you with
useful help.

Second: You really need to consider that the security in your application
is based on server communication. Several issues come to mind, including
connection issues and the fact that it seems that the app contains the
secured information which isn't quite good practice (for issues like
preventing large downloads etc. you could provide a decryption key).

Re: [android-developers] Android Browser plug in

Please note that Android native browser is a very broad definition.
The hardware vendors and/or Android distributers are free to

There is also very big differences between the versions actually
included in commercial products. Even among new products released
roughly at the same time I spot some key differences.

The custom url scheme is actually why I asked what the purpose was.

The ability to match an url is also a possibility (like the YouTube

Re: [android-developers] Datagram Socket android game

2012-09-20 Thread Michael Banzon
Usually multi player games are a whole category (there are numerous
books out there on the subject).

Spending on what questions you might have - from hardcore game
(theory) design to graphics and network programming it might be a good
idea to pickup such a book to get a good basic feel of the subject.

To partially/vaguely answer your question: Network based multiplayer
game clients would interact through the local network using sockets
(various types available) and through the internet using sockets
communicating with a server (implemented by you or third party). The
trend these days seem to be to include these two options along with a
multiplayer-through-bluetooth option - but depending on your current
experience and/or skill set I would recommend that you focus on one
way of communicating - my personal preferences would be direct socket
communication on a local network - but others might have a different
take on this.

Re: [android-developers] Insert data using SQLite Database with Insert + Where Clause after already entered data in next colums!

2012-07-26 Thread Michael Banzon
As Mark writes the syntax is not valid. You should use update.
Please refer to the SQLite documentation for specific syntax questions
- to the best of my knowledge the official documentation of standard
SQLite also covers the features available on Android:

Yes - it is enough data to do the math.

I vaguely remember stuff like this from pre grad school vector

results.

 This has nothing to do with Android. Use Google to find a help on doing the

Re: [android-developers] GooglePlayStore

2012-07-04 Thread Michael Banzon
Depending on what your app is and who you made it for - you can
distribute it using mail and/or direct download. This will need
special configuration on the devices to allow running your app.

If you wish to distribute your app to a few (more local) devices you
could simply connect the devices to the computer and start running the
app directly on the devices (like when debugging on a real device).

 Ok, sure.
 I actually needed the answer within sometime when I asked the question.
 I was given the url and was told to parse specific things in that within a
 particular period of time. Thats why, asked the question hurrily (without
 giving much specification).

 Well, so sorry for providing vague information about my problem.

Re: [android-developers] Different layouts for different groups in a Expandable ListView

What have you tried?

I'm guessing you can just do as listed in almost every UI example:
- Inflate the UI resource for the list item
- Resolve elements in the inflated view
- Assign listeners as you want

You might want to look into ViewFlipper.

It lets you add some views/elements and switch between them - using
buttons if you like.

 Fragment
 2) One field per Activity and next/back buttons until the form is
 completed
 3) Table layout (like excel) for displaying results of those inputs
 4) none of the above?
