3 devices with ICS ( HTC Desire / HTC One X / Asus Transformer )
and none of them seem to do it. Probably something obvious I'm doing
wrong.

Is that new in JB? All I can manage to do is turn off the screen or

The Market teams are weird. They should really use your browser
setting for language.

Try

[android-developers] Android Design - List action button

2012-02-01 Thread Peter Sinnott
Currently I am using long clicks and an alert dialog to allow users to
select actions that can be performed on an item in a list view.
I would like to replace this with an action button as this seems to be
suggested practice going forward.

Does the sdk provide a drawable for this type of button? I don't see
anything that matches the guideline.

I have 2.3.5 on my HTC Desire. In the web market it is marked as

app in search results but again that could just be the Markets awesome
search facility.

I have 23 others , 2 nexus ones and 3 droids. There are I think half a
dozen Android phones called droid and that is an awful lot of phones
tagged other. From a practical point of view I wouldn't consider the
device to be reported. The error reporting was nice when it arrived
but after a couple of months you get over it and realise how much
better it could easily be.

[android-developers] Re: ListView items

2011-08-20 Thread Peter Sinnott
Sure it is.

The adaptor has all the items. The view has the visible items.
If you want to do something with the visible items you can use the
view.
If you want to do something with all the items you can use the
adaptor.
If the adaptor doesn't have enough information to know the state of
the checkbox you may have problems but you will when the list scrolls
anyway.

AsyncTask was introduced in api level 3. Any chance your apps minimum
sdk level is below that?
Probably not but sometime it is the obvious things that cause the most
trouble.

It would nice if the developer console error page had the Android
version and device in it.

[android-developers] Re: Asus Eee Pad not supported by my app due to manifest settings when nothing is incompatible

It would be helpful if you mentioned the app in question.

I checked all your apps and they are all compatible with my

None of them are compatible with my phone (HTC Desire).

The apps apk tab has info used for filtering (api level, supported
screens, features, opengl) so maybe something is mentioned there.

Do trends even matter? My 3.0 installs have declined by 70%. I guess
that could be real but it seems a little strange that I have exactly
zero 3.1 or 3.2 installs. Is Google hiding that data or do other

Seems a little silly to have 2 different bug trackers.
Giving the impression that the public tracker is ignored defeats the
point of having one.

Market questions don't usually get an official response here but I
guess it is as good a place as any. I would have thought / hoped you
had better support options.

Does anyone know if "Don’t worry, you won’t be creating a duplicate,
the apps are exactly the same and the updated version will simply
replace your existing one." is true? I have always thought preloaded
apps updated via the market used up twice the space since you can
uninstall updates and go back to firmware version.

Maybe Google have blacklisted him and he will get booted as soon as

The TOC would work a lot better if people knew how it was being

Alternatively Google can randomly pick developers that are violating

The other devs violating the TOC in the same way will continue on

[android-developers] Re: Announcing: The Android Developers Union

2011-03-02 Thread Peter Sinnott
Granted spamming people not directly involved with the Market isn't
going to do much to
improve the situation but some people are prone to taking useless
action over doing nothing.
Ideally there would be some way for developers to have meaningful
interaction with Google
about the market instead of continually being forced to wonder what
the Market team are
currently up to in their lunar base on the dark side of the moon. Does
anyone know if content ratings will ever be used for anything???

This thread should probably be moved to Android Discuss if that is
possible since that is a more appropriate group
but nobody from Google will ever make a meaningful response to it
their either.

2011-02-28 Thread Peter Sinnott
How helpful.

A lot of websites say to use ACTION_SEND but I found ACTION_SENDTO
works better.

Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SENDTO);
emailIntent.setData(Uri.parse("mailto:a...@b.com";));
emailIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, "A
Subject" );

[android-developers] Multi select dialog preference has white text on white background in 1.6

2011-01-31 Thread Peter Sinnott
I am trying to create a multi select dialog preference but I have run
into a problem related to the bug referenced
in http://osdir.com/ml/AndroidBeginners/2009-02/msg00537.html . Does
anyone know an easy non invasive way to change the text to black? The
post says the bug was fixed in 1.5 so this may be a slightly different
bug that wasn't fixed till 2.0.

[android-developers] Install to sd and alarms

2010-09-24 Thread Peter Sinnott
I am thinking of adding install to sd support to my app but it seems
sd and the alarms manager do not mix well.
So far I have tried receiving ACTION_MEDIA_MOUNTED intents so I can
reregister my alarms but the intent is never fired. Is there any easy
hook I can use to register alarms when my app becomes available after
the sd card is remounted?

My app isn't very large but I think users will appreciate any internal
memory I free up since Android phones don't seem to have very much of
it.

[android-developers] Re: Is anyone's active install % dropping like a rock lately?

2010-09-18 Thread Peter Sinnott
Received this update this morning :

Hello,

We'd like to give you an update on this issue. We've previously stated
that some application updates are incorrectly being counted as pure
uninstalls rather than updates, causing the active installs metric to
drop. We have now identified the root cause, and are working on a fix
that we hope to release next week. However, due to the nature of the
interaction between the Market client and our reporting
infrastructure, it may take up to several weeks for your metrics in
the Developer Console to return to normal. Again, we apologize for any
inconvenience, and will keep you posted on our progress.

Thank you for your continued patience.

[android-developers] Re: Is anyone's active install % dropping like a rock lately?

2010-09-10 Thread Peter Sinnott
My active install percent has been dropping since the 25th of August.
Bit of a bummer since it had been rising more or less consistently as
new versions were released and I was hoping this was reflecting the
increasing quality of my app. I had a strange and unsettling
experience today that may be relevant.

I was checking for updates in the market and there was one for
AppBrain. I started downloading the update and left the market. I was
notified the download (or maybe the install) failed so I re-entered
the market. The market thought the download was still in progress so I
cancelled it. After cancellation the market no longer thought AppBrain
was installed but it was still on the phone as far as I could tell. I
rebooted but that changed nothing. I installed it again via the
market. During the install the market seemed to know AppBrain was
installed (as if it was installed outside the market e.g via adb).

In short, market place goes nuts and forgets the app is installed.
User has app but never gets updates and possibly is removed from
active installs.
I was on the bus home from work so this (as with all user reports)
recollection may not be 100% accurate but it is a possible
explanation.

Thanks,
Peter

[android-developers] Re: Dynamically load jar files in android runtime?

I think under the hood android does not support java bytecode. Instead
it uses dex files which I presume contain bytecode for the Dalvik
virtual machine. Possibly you can compile your jar to a dex file and
load that dynamically.
