Sorry, I accidently replied to Michael instead of the list. The patch
keeps the ril from crashing, but doesn't make MMI codes work. You can
patch your ril, then just do make again--it will only rebuild the
changed code.

Just to reiterate the point Chris already made, everything released by
the Android on Freerunner distro is under an open source license
(Apache or GPL) which allows distribution. You can inspect the
licenses and build the same binaries from the source at
http://gitorious.org/android-on-freerunner/.

> back to moko and hackable:1 feels good

The differences between Android and other Freerunner distros are the
license (Apache allows closed-source forks) and that closed-source
applications exist on Android. Of course, if you don't like
closed-source apps, you don't have to install any.

Hi Damir,

Thanks for your work so far and welcome back! I wanted to mention
specific places where I know we could use images/icons. I'm probably
missing some, so others should feel free to chime in. On the Google
code site (http://code.google.com/p/android-on-freerunner/), we can
upload our own icon for the upper-left of all the pages. I used the
generic Android Robot to start, but it would be nice to have something
distinctive. I also used the generic robot to replace the Koolu logo
for the boot splash (what you see when you first boot the phone). If
we want to, it's also possible to replace the animated Android logo
you see later in the start-up process. Ideally that graphic should be
480x640, to match the Freerunner's screen resolution. I'm not sure
what the requirements are for animation, but I'll research them if
someone comes up with something animated.

For those who may not know, Android ringtones and sounds are generally
in .ogg format.

I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing your work!

I liked Damir's work as well, and I'm sorry about the negative
outcome. As we discuss names and graphics, I though I'd post this link
that documents Google's requirements around the use of the Android
name and logos: http://www.android.com/branding.html

The green robot is licensed as Creative Commons Attribution, so I
think Damir's logo would be fine. IANAL, but it appears that use of
the work "Android" comes with conditions and the use of "Droid" is not
allowed, so we should take that into consideration as we think about
names and logos.

Select each APN that shows up there, when you get to the details page,

Note that you may want to write down the APN info somewhere, in case

If this works, please let me know and I'll update the FAQ.

As to "why zip", I was lazy and didn't want to build two archives and
figured it was easier for Linux users to deal with zip than for
Windows users to deal with .tar.gz. If someone wants to volunteer to
do packaging, they can override that decision. :-)

This would be very useful, but I don't know to do this yet. I've
created Issue 6

[android-freerunner] Announcement: New Cupcake release for Freerunner

2009-09-19 Thread Jim Ancona
Hi all,

After the discussion that Serdar kicked off last week, I though I'd
try to keep the momentum by getting a cupcake release out and some of
the tools in place to get an active community going around the
project.

So I'm glad to announce a new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner!
It's basically a merge of the Koolu code with Michael Trimarchi's
enhancements and a few bug fixes and cosmetic things I've added. You
can download it at our new Google Code site:

http://android-on-freerunner.googlecode.com/files/android-on-freerunner-cupcake-0.1.zip

Installation instructions are the same as for the recent Koolu betas:

- Unpack the files on to a FAT formatted SD card.
- Insert card into the Freerunner, and boot from NOR menu (hold AUX
key, then power)
- Choose Boot from SD Card (FAT and ext2)

The automated install process should begin. It installs the Qi
bootloader, reboots, the kernel, reboots, then installs the system
image.

*NOTE:* This install process overwrites *everything* on the NAND in
the phone, including the bootloader. If this is not what you would
like to do, please don't install this release! We'd love to have an SD
card installer, if someone would like to contribute it.

The Google Code site includes a bug tracker. We've got a couple bugs
added already. Please add any others you find. The code for the
release is hosted at Gitorious, because Google Code doesn't support
Git. The consensus of the discussions here seemed to be that we should
have our own mailing list, so I've also created one at Google Groups.
The URL to join it is below.

I'd really like this to become a real community project, so please
help by contributing what you can. Not money, but bug reports (or even
better, bug reports with patches), other code, or documentation. We
have a wiki at the Google Code site. Anyone who would like to create
content for it, please contact me and I'll add you to the project.

I hope we can create a vibrant community around Android on Freerunner,
and that you can help!

Jim Ancona

I've mirrored the Koolu repository at Gitorious

merging Michael Trimarchi's work there as well.
I've also created a Google Code project

a wiki, bug tracker and hosting of releases. So I plan to keep code at
Gitorious, with everything else at Google Code.

Watch for a release announcement soon.

Re: [android-freerunner] Donut

2009-09-18 Thread Jim Ancona
Great discussion! I feel like I'm at a disadvantage, trying to respond
during the workday in GMT-4. I know I haven't communicated much since
I announced that I had mirrored Koolu's repo at Gitorious, but I have
been able to do some work amidst the day job and other things.

I have merged Michael's changes from Serdar's repo into my local tree
and have built an image that runs pretty well. I'm using Koolu's
install process (everything installed in the internal memory).
Eventually, I'd like to have a process to install to SD as well. I
need to upload that work to the Gitorious repo
(http://gitorious.org/android-on-freerunner), which I will probably do
in the next 24 hours.

The small amount of testing I've done reveals wifi, GPRS and GPS work.
Receiving calls works immediately after install, without any
sqlite/provisioning flag stuff. Wifi still doesn't work after resume
unless you restart it (or toggle airplane mode).

I have other fixes and enhancements I'd like to do, as I'm sure others
here do as well.

Gitorious provides Git hosting and a wiki, but not much else. I was
thinking of creating an android-on-freerunner project at Google Code
to host a wiki, bug tracker and plus built images. If that works for
others in the community, I'll set that up this weekend as well.

I agree that we should migrate to mailing list that's not hosted by
Koolu. I don't have a strong opinion on using a separate list versus
sharing one of the Openmoko lists. I can see advantages and
disadvantages to each.

No, I haven't heard anything. I have mirrored the Koolu repository
locally and have also created a project on Gitorious to host the code:
http://gitorious.org/android-on-freerunner/. You should be able to
build the Koolu cupcake branch by intializing with:

repo init -u
git://gitorious.org/android-on-freerunner/freerunner_platform_manifest.git
-b cupcake

I'm happy to accept patches, or grant commit privileges to regular
contributors. I'd appreciate suggestions about where we go from here

Whatever you like... :-)

adb is now working for you, so you can do

ADBHOST=192.168.0.202 ./adb shell

if you want a command shell on the phone. ./adb help will give you a
list of other commands.

It sounds like your phone suspended while you were in adb. You can go
into Settings/Applications/Development and check "Stay awake" so that
your phone doesn't sleep while connected to the computer.

In the directory where adb is located...
Make sure it's executable:

You shouldn't need sudo. Make sure you're in the directory where adb
is located and put the './' in front of adb so that it doesn't need to
be in your PATH.

Re: [android-freerunner] which android should i install

2009-08-04 Thread Jim Ancona
I think it will work without a SIM card if it is marked a provisioned.
With 1.5-alpha, try getting a shell with adb, then do:

# sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
SQLite version 3.5.9
Enter ".help" for instructions
sqlite> INSERT INTO secure (name, value) VALUES ('device_provisioned', 1);
sqlite> .exit

I think that may fix it for you. See
http://android.koolu.org/pipermail/android-freerunner-koolu.org/2009-July/001085.html
for more of an explanation.

No, just the img files (including kernel.img). Don't replace the other
kernels in the installer.

The install takes several minutes. If it hasn't completed in 10
minutes or so, I'd probably start over.

Re: [android-freerunner] how to flash customized rootfs successfully?

2009-08-02 Thread Jim Ancona
I think the instructions on the wiki no longer apply since Koolu
changed the install procedure in beta 4.

If you are working from the current Koolu tree, after a build look in
out/target/product/freerunner where you will find kernel.img,
ramdisk.img, system.img and userdata.img. Just copy those four files
over the versions in the Koolu install on your SD card, and reinstall
the same way you installed beta 7. You should now be running your
customized image.

If someone can tell me how to update the kernel ramdis and system
images without overwring the user file system I'd appreciate it. I
hate loosing all my installed apps and settings every time I
reinstall.

[android-freerunner] Build variant and speed

2009-07-30 Thread Jim Ancona
Just for fun, I tried building cupcake setting TARGET_BUILD_VARIANT to
"userdebug" instead of the default "eng". I noticed a few differences:
some apps were missing, adb shell logged me in as a non-root user, but
mostly that many operations seemed much faster. So I investigated a
bit and commented out line 162 of build/core/build.mk:

#ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES += ro.kernel.android.checkjni=1

Then I built again with TARGET_BUILD_VARIANT=eng, and I got the
speed-up without the other changes. Patch attached for anyone else who
wants to give it a try.

Michael, any chance you can set up an internet connection and try
going to one of the Google site that use Gears (Gmail, Calendar, the
new Location service on the home page) and see if you are prompted to

Marcelo, I assume you meant BROWSER=NPAPI. What error did you get when
you didn't set that? Are you using SVN revision 3291? Might
BROWSER=CHROME or BROWSER=WEBKIT be a better choice if you have to
specify one?

No, I didn't specify the browser, but it seemed to build fine without it.

Under Gears Settings I see a list of site where I've enabled Gears.
When I click on one of the sites I can see the permissions I gave that
site and an option to remove it.

Try logging in to Google, then going to Gmail, Calendar or even the
mobile search page. It should prompt you to enable Gears on those
sites.

[android-freerunner] Google Gears

2009-07-23 Thread Jim Ancona
I noticed that whwn I build from the cupcake branch, the browser
crashes immediately, because the bad armv5 gears.so is present in
/data/data/com.android.browser/app_plugins/. I don't have this problem
when I install the 1.5 alpha version. Are all the Koolu changes in the
public tree?

In any case, I decided to try to build a good gears.so for Freerunner.
It worked, and I know have GMail and Google Calendar working offline
in the browser!

Here's the procedure I followed:

* Checkout Gears source with SVN:
svn checkout http://gears.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ gears-read-only

* Change into the gears directory:
cd gears-read-only/

* Update the tree to version or the binary on the cupcake branch, 0.5.17.0

With further testing it appears that the wifi doesn't handle loss and
reacquisition of signal very well. It appears to maintain a connection
okay where a strong signal is available, but it doesn't seem to detect
loss of signal, nor does it reacquire a signal when the phone comes

[android-freerunner] Cupcake 1.5-alpha1 issues and impressions

2009-07-21 Thread Jim Ancona
It installed easily. Wifi and GPS work out of the box. I could make
calls. Received calls went directly to voicemail, with a note in the
log: "CallNotifier: rejecting incoming call because device isn't
provisioned", which led me to Cedric's email:

http://www.mail-archive.com/android-freerunner@android.koolu.org/msg00575.html

I was able to fix it by inserting a row in the secure table in settings.db:

# sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
SQLite version 3.5.9
Enter ".help" for instructions
sqlite> INSERT INTO secure (name, value) VALUES ('device_provisioned', 1);

There's discussion and proposed patches to fix the issue here:
http://groups.google.com/group/android-platform/browse_thread/thread/b74b476b41d96ee4/5837e7419b6c819b

Other impressions:
Call volume is still very low.
Wifi seems to stop working from time to time.
GPRS still doesn't work--defining an APN seems to break GSM voice as well
Battery life is still bad, a few hours at best. Apparently the phone
still isn't suspending
The UI is slow, but seems to have gotten faster after a few hours of
use--or maybe I've just gotten used to it :-)

Keep up the good work!

I don't know what's in Michael's tree, but if you're referring to the
keyboard in the current Koolu 1.0 build, it isn't backported from cupcake.
Instead, I made some updates to Rui Castro's earlier work to fit more keys
on the screen and make it work in modal dialogs.

I sent mine almost a month ago, but haven't seen any activity in the

the lack of feedback or evident progress is disappointing. Lately,

This appears to be the result of some interaction between Qi and

You might want to mention which ditro you are running when you experience this.

To clean the SD card, just remove all the files on both partitions (or
reformat). Note that doing this will remove any installed apps or
configuration you have done.

[android-freerunner] Fwd: Openmoko Bug #2235: Monochrome display on resume

2009-03-10 Thread Jim Ancona
I ran into this after installing Qi as part of Marcelo's beta 4
release candidate. I'm not sure if it affected that image, but I
definitely saw it after reflashing with Michael's uImage-v13.bin.

Michael, perhaps you could release a new kernel with the patch. Do
your images still require the kernel keyboard patch, or do you have
Radek's Hardware keyboard in userspace patch applied? If you have the
userspace patch applied, should I be able to user a stock kernel?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: [android-freerunner] Koolu beta 4 and more

2009-03-07 Thread Jim Ancona
The install of the beta4 RC went fine. After reboot the usb interface
was at eth3 for me. GSM does not register for me. See the attached
radio.log. I've tried reseating my SIM card several times.

Wifi sees my WPA AP. I tried to install QAD keyboard to enter the
password, but every time I try to install it with adb, the UI
restarts. See the attached install.log. Despite the
"Couldn't create temp file for downloaded package file." message, the
apk is on the phone in /data/local/tmp. I used Note pad to copy and
paste my password and wifi connected successfully.

Hope you can resolve the GSM problem soon.

Andreas, I'm pretty sure you should NOT be using the patched
freerunner-ril.so with 14.5. A newer version was included with the
filesystem.

I'm running 14.5 as downloaded and GPRS works.

Is there no way to for wifi to automatically scan for the DNS and fill
 it
in. The wifi is pretty much useless in public when you do not know the
 DNS
number. I haven't been able to connect to a open wifi connection in
 public
yet (I'm guessing all routers with atypical dns numbers).

Re: [android-freerunner] USSD Messaging

2009-03-02 Thread Jim Ancona
Just to follow-up on the USSD messaging, I'm seeing radio log messages
like this:

D/AT ( 829): MUX[primary]: AT< +CUSD:
0,"546865206C617374207472616E73616374696F6E20636F737420302E3030205553442E20596F7572206163636F756E742062616C616E63652069732031302E3530205553442E",15

along with a dialog displaying the same hex string. That message decodes to:
"The last transaction cost 0.00 USD. Your account balance is 10.50 USD."

So I'd say you're just almost done.

Re: [android-freerunner] Can anyone has tested gprs?

2009-03-02 Thread Jim Ancona
Yes, that's what I did.

BTW, one issue I noticed with the new freerunnner-v14.5.jffs2.
Michael's blog post announcing v14.4 says "power button press more > 2
secs go to suspend". That works for me in 14.5. The problem is that it
breaks the Home button functionality, which was mapped to the same
action.

Michael, could we get a > 1 sec pres of Aux mapped to Home?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: [android-freerunner] Can anyone has tested gprs?

2009-03-02 Thread Jim Ancona
GPRS is working for me too! Great job, Michael and Sean!

I'm also seeing occasional dialogs pop up with a long hexadecimal
string as the message. I captured this message in the radio log, which
seems to contain the same hex string:

D/AT ( 829): MUX[primary]: AT< +CUSD:
0,"546865206C617374207472616E73616374696F6E20636F737420302E3030205553442E20596F7572206163636F756E742062616C616E63652069732031302E3530205553442E",15

I'm guessing this is related to the USSD messaging. My account is
prepaid, and on other phones I receive various usage messages, but I
have seen them on the Freerunner up until now.

Re: [android-freerunner] Can anyone has tested gprs?

2009-02-27 Thread Jim Ancona
Here's an interesting log capture. I'm using FS 14.3,
freerunner-ril.so dated February 27 09 16:12:10 and kernel v13. I
switched from have my carrier (AT&T) selected to automatic selection
and got the trace below. Based on the "Error creating PPP options
file: /data/misc/ppp/options.gprs." message near the end, I added the
following line to init.rc and tried again:

mkdir /data/misc/ppp 0771 radio system

I then rebooted and tried again. The log is below. No error creating
PPP options file, but still no connection.

Any suggestions?

Jim

Michael,

I'm downloading your v15 image and I'll give it a try. I found this
page useful in setting up the APN for GPRS access, but you will need
to Google for the setting for your carrier:

I like Marco's proposed key mapping.

This is great work, since it should allow us to use a totally stock
Openmoko kernel for Android.

Re: [android-freerunner] force usb charge via shell commands from application - permissions

2009-01-27 Thread Jim Ancona
Rather than System.exec(), how about using something like (warning:
untested code!):

FileWriter fw = new
FileWriter("/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/pcf50633-mbc/force_usb_limit_dangerous");
try {
  fw.write("500");
  fw.flush();
} finally {
  fw.close();
}

As long as other has write permission to
/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/pcf50633-mbc/force_usb_limit_dangerous,
you should be all set. So in init.rc, you'd need something like:

chmod 666
/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/pcf50633-mbc/force_usb_limit_dangerous

Re: [android-freerunner] Android Image Releases and Repository...

2009-01-23 Thread Jim Ancona
Brian,

Sounds like a good plan. So far, it's been hard to know what people
are working on, what code is being changed, what needs testing, etc. A
lot of people are doing different things and it's possible that their
contributions will be lost or work duplicated. This list, and the
changes you outline in your email should help a lot.

A few suggestions:

Communication: Can we try to concentrate discussion about development,
patches, testing, etc. on this list? The committers (you, Marcelo,
anyone else?) could help by discussing what you're working on here.
(My open source experience is in the Apache world where there's a
cultural norm against doing any substantive discussion off-list.)
Perhaps people could submit patches here, or at least CC: this list
along with the patches address.

More frequent commits: To me, frequent commits are more important than
frequent builds. This is because I can build myself, and I'd rather
just "repo sync" than apply patches all over the place, then worry
about merges when they finally get committed. I realize that others'
mileage may vary :-)

Is there any way to get a feed of git commits? The RSS/Atom feed at
git.koolu.com seems to only show merges from the Google tree. Even
though I can see your commits when browsing, I don't see them in the
feed.

More frequent kernel merges: I understand that you probably have
concerns about stability, but my experience with running a patched
andy-tracking kernel is pretty good. The do seem to be fixing a number
of worthwhile bugs these days, and I think it would make help to have
the merged kernel available so that userspace could adapt and benefit
from changes they make. BTW, is there any reason your changes can't be
pushed back upstream, so that we could build an Android kernel by
simply changing some config settings?

Some sort of road map and/or to-do list: I'd like to contribute to the
project. I'm a skilled Java developer with some experience with the
Android SDK. My C skills are a bit rusty, I'm still getting the hang
of git and repo, but I do have a working build environment and I can
troubleshoot problems. I'd love to have a list of tasks, preferably
one that indicates which items you and Koolu are planning on tackling
first, so that I can avoid those and concentrate on ones where I might
be of help and am less likely to duplicate effort.

Again, thanks for your efforts so far and I look forward to
contributing in some way going forward. I look forward to hearing more
from you soon.
