'Arms For Democracy': Britain More Than Doubled Arms Sales To Musharraf [WWW.STO
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_24406,00050003.htm The Hindustan Times July 22, 2002 -This year the government has approved licences covering the export of a large range of weapons to India and Pakistan, including bombs, torpedoes, rockets, missiles, howitzers and components for military aircraft, according to parliamentary answers given to MPs. UK's arms sale to Pak doubled last year Press Trust of India London, July 20 Britain's arms sales to Pakistan more than doubled last year to 14 million pounds while sales to India, valued at 62.5 million pounds, were similar to the previous year. Although the sales were agreed before the two countries experienced the most dangerous stand-off for years, the details have emerged a day after a joint report by four Commons select committees attacked the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw for the sale of weapons to India and Pakistan during their tense stand off at the border. This year the government has approved licences covering the export of a large range of weapons to India and Pakistan, including bombs, torpedoes, rockets, missiles, howitzers and components for military aircraft, according to parliamentary answers given to MPs. According to the annual Foreign Office Report, the Government also approved the sale of more than 6,000 assault rifles to Nepal whose government faces civil insurgency by Maoists. The report by the foreign affairs, defence, trade and industry and international development committees, accused the Government of adopting a "laissez faire" attitude to granting arms export licences where "anything goes". Responding to the MPs'report, Straw, on a visit to India, yesterday denied that arms sales to India and Pakistan had contributed to escalating tensions between the two. Straw told BBC's The World At One: "The licences issued earlier this year have made no difference whatever to the level of tension across the Line of Control in Kashmir. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Bosnia: Peacekeeping As War Training [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=9565 Task force gives 'em Hellfire in exercise at Bosnia range By Ivana Avramovic, Stars and Stripes European edition, Sunday, July 21, 2002 -The soldiers took a break from peacekeeping to fire anti-tank guided Hellfire missiles, rockets and 50 millimeter rounds. The training is an opportunity for the unit to stay proficient in its wartime missions, said Lt. Col. A. Thomas Ball, commander of Task Force 1-25 out of Hawaii. -We demonstrate that SFOR, despite our reductions, is still a very credible force able to ensure a safe and secure environment here in Bosnia. Our training is, in fact, a demonstration or a show of NATOs resolve in this matter. -The skills that we have the opportunity to train out here will be critical, McAuliffe said. Because the next likely place were going to be sent will have live ordinance going both directions. GLAMOC, Bosnia and Herzegovina U.S. Army aviation troops in Bosnia, while on peacekeeping duty, brushed up on wartime skills last week. The training took place at Glamoc Range during Pacific Resolve II. The soldiers took a break from peacekeeping to fire anti-tank guided Hellfire missiles, rockets and 50 millimeter rounds. The training is an opportunity for the unit to stay proficient in its wartime missions, said Lt. Col. A. Thomas Ball, commander of Task Force 1-25 out of Hawaii. Were doing this while conducting our stability and support operations in Bosnia. Ball said the six-day training at the range southwest of Eagle Base goes hand in hand with peacekeeping. I feel they are not mutually exclusive, he said. In fact, they reinforce each other. We demonstrate that SFOR, despite our reductions, is still a very credible force able to ensure a safe and secure environment here in Bosnia. Our training is, in fact, a demonstration or a show of NATOs resolve in this matter. The practice scenario was developed from actual events of the past. The mission was to rescue personnel and protect a weapons storage site from angry local soldiers who had not been paid for months. Mission accomplished. Conducting the training in Bosnia at Glamoc Range had many benefits for the task force from Hawaii. Training opportunities in Glamoc are as good or better than what I have at home station, Ball said. The range is a five-hour drive from Eagle Base, and it took less effort to move there than from Oahu Island to the Big Island of Hawaii, where the task force normally conducts exercises. All the necessary equipment was airlifted and driven to the range. No ships were needed. My soldiers are already deployed and away from their families, Ball said. If I can conduct this training here before I return to Hawaii, this is a huge benefit. At home, the troops face altitude- and long-distance-navigations restrictions, and limits on firing Hellfire missiles. This is great training, excellent training, said Lt. Jon Merkel, a Kiowa pilot. We have an ample supply of ammo to execute the mission. The weather is agreeing with us. Everything was accomplished in one day. Though it is unlikely that troops will have to use the Hellfire missiles and rockets while conducting peacekeeping duties in Bosnia, Capt. Dan McAuliffe, the intelligence officer for the task force, said training is crucial. The skills that we have the opportunity to train out here will be critical, McAuliffe said. Because the next likely place were going to be sent will have live ordinance going both directions. Ball was satisfied with the results his aviators showed. I am extremely pleased because I will be bringing back [to Hawaii] an aviation task force thats better trained and more proficient than I brought to Bosnia. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The Pope, the Patriarch and Trotsky [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- http://www.russiajournal.com/weekly/article.shtml?ad=6385 The Pope, the Patriarch and Trotsky By JOE ADAMOV / Moscow mailbag How is Leon Trotsky viewed by Russian historians today? William Kerr, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Leon Trotsky was an excellent public speaker. He took an active part in organizing the Red Army and played a major role in preparing the defence of the country, as well as the victory in the civil war. He had much that Stalin lacked. Trotsky was one of the leaders in the armed uprising in Petrograd. After the Bolsheviks took power, he held several ministerial posts, including chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council. He was uncompromising toward Stalin and the existing regime. Unfortunately, he also went down in history as one of the organizers of labor camps and mass executions. Nevertheless, he was one of the main leaders of the revolution. He believed fanatically in the workers revolution of the world. Trotsky left the world 100 volumes of his works. No one has had as many lies told about him and nobody has been as ruthlessly discredited as Trotsky. Yes, he believed in world communism. But he was never an enemy of the Soviet Union and never bowed to the West. But youve got to understand that the world revolution, like communism, was a myth, a mirage. Will Patriarch Alexii II and Pope John Paul II ever meet? Jason Glavy, Yokohama, Japan Let me ask you a question. Why did the Russian Orthodox Church forbid American preachers from conducting their sermons in Russia, in large indoor stadiums that were packed, with translation that was excellent? They had already been shown on television, but then they were stopped. Why? The Russian Church tells us that in Western Ukraine the Catholic Church persecutes the Orthodox Church. Its churches are taken away, and all decisions are made in favor of the Catholics. The Catholics are accused of expanding into historically Orthodox territory, making it their canonic territory. Then the Vatican decided to raise its apostolic administration in Russia to the level of dioceses in other words, to move it a rung higher. The Catholics also gained Orthodox territory by winning over believers in various material ways. The Orthodox Church said that visits of the Pope to Russia and the former republics must be coordinated with the Russian government. After all, the Vatican is a state, not just a religious center. I may be wrong, but I get the impression the Russian Orthodox Church wants to dominate its territory. I think it would be in the interests of both to come to terms with each other and to become friends. What is the cost of computers in Russia? How many are there? Ray Davey, North Otago, New Zealand. Monitors cost roughly $150. Computers run from $400 to $1,000. Some say we have 4.8 million home computers. We hold 15th place in the world in terms of the number of Internet users. Please explain the Russian custom of name-day celebrations. John Devon, Long Beach, CA, U.S.A. We call the name day an Angels Day. The name of your guardian angel is given to you at your christening. In old Russia, ones Angels Day had more significance than ones birthday. At the beginning of the 20th century, on ones name day, his or her family would polish the parquet floors and prepare many excellent dishes. Women would sew new clothes, bake cakes and buy flowers. Does Russia have the highest percentage of beautiful women? Alex Azar, Toronto, Canada I dont know whether we have the highest percentage of beautiful women. There are beautiful women in many nations. When a beauty competition is held, they dont examine millions of people just the few that want to compete and feel they have a chance of winning. This year, Miss Universe was a Russian woman, 24-year-old police officer Oksana Fedorova. She received $250,000 and the right to study in New York. U.S. Army to become law enforcers... [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- [Bye-bye 'liberties' and Hel*-o fascism! ...] Top Stories U.S. Mulls Military's Domestic Role Sun Jul 21, 4:44 PM ET By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland security chief Tom Ridge says the threat of terrorism may force government planners to consider using the military for domestic law enforcement, now largely prohibited by federal law. President[/dictator George W.] Bush has called on Congress to thoroughly review the law that bans the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines from participating in arrests, searches, seizure of evidence and other police-type activity on U.S. soil. The Coast Guard and National Guard troops under the control of state governors are excluded from the Reconstruction-era law, known as the "Posse Comitatus Act." Ridge said Sunday that it "goes against our instincts as a country to empower the military with the ability to arrest [chuckle, chuckle] ," and called the prospect "very unlikely." But he said the government is wise to examine the law. "We need to be talking about military assets, in anticipation of a crisis event [for example, the people demanding the heads of us folks in government and the corporate leaders who've swindled them out of thier life savings]," Ridge said on "Fox News Sunday." "And clearly, if you're talking about using the military [to protect my *ss, your *sses in the media and all the other *sses of the ruling class] , then you should have a discussion about posse comitatus." [As to be expected and in the spirit of double-talk] Two influential Democratic senators agreed with Bush and Ridge that the law ought to be reviewed, but expressed no interest [to openly support Bushel's proposal ] in granting the military new powers to arrest American citizens. Sen. Carl Levin, chairman Senate Armed Services Committee, said posse comitatus "has served us well for a long time." "It's kept the military out of law enforcement, out of arresting people except in the most unusual emergency situations like a riot or after some kind of a disaster where they have to protect against looting," Levin, D-Mich., said on CNN's "Late Edition." However, [now that our rich *sses are on the line, ] he said: "I don't fear looking at it to see whether or not our military can be more helpful in a very supportive and assisting role even than they have been up to now providing equipment, providing training, [protecting our behinds, you know ] those kind of things which do not involve arresting people [wink, wink]." Sen. Joe Biden, [warmonger extrodinaire and] chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he favors expanding the military's role in responding to major catastrophes such as an attack by a weapon of mass destruction [and, of course, the lynching our *sses by the masses]. The law "has to be amended, but we're not talking about general police power," Biden, D-Del., said on "Fox News Sunday." Air Force Gen. Ralph E. Eberhart, who heads the new military command charged with defending American territory [and the rich folks who own most of it], told The New York Times he favors changing the law to grant greater domestic powers to the military to protect against terror attacks . He offered no specific changes he favored [but hinted that whatever would protect him from the prospect of an indefinite stay in prison he would favour] Congress [, perceiving their days to be numbered,] is racing to approve legislation by the end of its session this fall that would make Bush's proposed Department of Homeland Security a reality. In the Senate, a version of the measure by Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman [and Concil of Foreigh Relations high representative] Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., tracks closely with Bush's plan. It also would augment the agency's ability to gather and analyze intelligence from the [fascist] FBI, CIA and others [whose job it is to protect the criminals that run the world]. That bill is to be considered by the Senate committee Wednesday. House Majority Leader Dick Armey said on NBC's "Meet the Press" there was a strong possibility Congress will resolve its differences and send Bush a bill enacting the sweeping government reorganization by Sept. 11. Some lawmakers have expressed concern about rushing decisions on far-reaching changes in the bureaucracy [so as to leave the impression that there are a plurality of interests served in congress] , but Armey [, voicing the actual view of the elite,] said: "It's time to move forward with this. The president's got a good plan ." Bush planned to give [yet] a [nother memorized] speech [this] Monday about his proposed new department and [to] view demonstrations of high-technology devices for combatting terrorism that are being developed at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. --- ANTI-NATO INFORMATION LIST ==^ Thi

PACE: On Serious Violations of Law in the Case of Mr. Slobodan Milosevic [WWW.ST
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe 27 June 2002 Strasburg Motion for Resolution On Serious Violations of Law in the Case of Mr. Slobodan Milosevic 1. The Assembly expresses concern over the character of the proceedings at The Hague Tribunal for former Yugoslavia in the case of Mr. Milosevic. There is reports of violation of generally accepted norms of law, especially of Mr. Milosevic's human rights and his right to have proper defense. 2. Mr. Milosevic is constantly cut-off during cross-examination of the witnesses, which deprives him of his right to expose false claims of some of the witnesses. He is deprived of sufficient rest, of access to fresh air and of proper facilities to prepare his defense. He is not allowed to see doctors and lawyers of his choice. 3. By combining the indictments over Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia the prosecution gets unacceptable long time to present its case. Thus the accused will be imprisoned for years before he even can start defending himself. 4. Mr. Milosevic is treated as if he has already been convicted. He is being held in a cell and under constant surveillance, his mail is being censored, family visits restricted. There are restrictions on what he can see or hear on radio or television. The right of the general public to obtain objective information on the developments at Mr. Milosevic's trial is infringed by the total news blackout. 5. The Assembly notes that The Hague tribunal is being used as an instrument of interference into the internal affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia rather than as an instrument of justice. This contributes to political destabilization of Yugoslavia when in desperately needs stability to handle its deepening economic and social crisis. 6. The Assembly resolves to send a fact-finding mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to The Hague in order to assess the trial and to report back to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Signed by PACE members Gennady Churkin (Russia), Anatoly Rohansky (Ukraine), Nikolay Shaklein (Russia), Andrei Neguta (Moldavia), Alexander Pysarenko (Ukraine), Boris Oliynik (Ukraine), Ashot Galoyan (Armenia), Valeri Federov (Russia), Gagik Manukyan (Armenia), Rafael Huseynov (Azerbaijan) To join or help this struggle, visit:http://www.sps.org.yu/ (official SPS website)http://www.belgrade-forum.org/ (forum for the world of equals)http://www.icdsm.org/ (the international committee to defend Slobodan Milosevic)http://www.jutarnje.co.yu/ ('morning news' the only Serbian newspaper advocating liberation) --- ANTI-NATO INFORMATION LIST ==^ This email was sent to: archive@jab.org EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://topica.com/u/?a84x2u.bacIlu Or send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] T O P I C A -- Register now to manage your mail! http://www.topica.com/partner/tag02/register ==^
Slobodan Milosevic as a Symbol of Anti-Globalism [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- International Conference "Slobodan Milosevic as a Symbol of Anti-Globalism" 25 June 2002 Held at the International Association of Peace Foundations 10, Prechistenka Str., Moscow, Russia Statement We, participants in the Conference marking the first anniversary of the criminal kidnapping of Slobodan Milosevic on orders of NATO's tribunal in The Hague, declare the following: Events of the past year, particularly developments at the 'trial' of Slobodan Milosevic, have confirmed that the forces of Globalisation are trying to use the mechanisms of international justice to intervene in the internal affairs of any country in the world. Yugoslavia has been turned into a testing ground for all kinds of new military and political technologies directed at subjugating peoples of the world to the power of an illegal, US-based "world government". At first Western-created, Albanian terrorist organizations were used in Kosovo against Yugoslavia. When this attack was defeated, NATO launched open military aggression in gross violation of the UN Charter and other norms of international law. At the same time, they employed their "weapon of law," The Hague 'tribunal,' part of the repressive machinery of the Western world. President Milosevic is not being tried by a tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, set up to impartially investigate the true causes and consequences of the tragedy that has befallen the peoples of the former Yugoslavia. Rather, this is a tribunal against Yugoslavia, set up by the guilty to justify and continue their policies of destruction while blaming and punishing the innocent, Yugoslavia's leader who resisted their illegal intervention. Slobodan Milosevic is being prosecuted because he defeated the attempts of the West to suppress Yugoslavia's commitment to freedom and independence. This creates a chilling precedent. Dozens of countries have already been proclaimed "supporters of terrorism". They may also become victims of aggression, and their leaders might be tomorrow's war criminals. Slobodan Milosevic fought against terrorism, but he is condemned today by those who fostered ethnic conflict and launched terrorist organizations with the purpose of establishing a "New World Order ". For the second time in the last 60 years the world faces aggression aimed at global domination. It is a new version of Nazism. Just as the Nazis persecuted Dimitrov in 1933, now NATO tries to condemn the leader of resistance to neo-Nazi ideology and practice. False "witnesses" are routinely called by this court which psychologically and physically tortures Slobodan Milosevic. Deprived of proper facilities to prepare, he is compelled to participate in endless sessions, day-in and day-out, so that he is also deprived of proper rest. Shocked by Slobodan Milosevic's power and persuasiveness, the Western countries have launched a conspiracy of silence, taking the 'trial' off television. All this confirms the utter failure of their 'tribunal' to justify their accusations against Slobodan Milosevic. The issue here is not merely the defense of an individual. This false 'tribunal' destroys the UN's authority and the very system of international law. Therefore, by defending Slobodan Milosevic we assert the rights of all peoples to national dignity and national sovereignty. We are convinced that our struggle will the enjoy growing support of honest people worldwide. The Conference notes with satisfaction that the campaign demanding the liquidation of the shameful Hague 'tribunal' is intensifying. For instance, the State Duma of the Russian Federation has repeatedly adopted resolutions condemning its activity. The Conference calls on the international public to apply pressure on the governments of the UN Security Council member states that illegally created The Hague 'tribunal' so that this body, which discredits the very idea of international justice, may be shut down. We support proposals to start an international petition campaign demanding the 'tribunal' be abolished. We call on a broad range of public organizations to take part in the struggle in defense of Slobodan Milosevic, as it is an integral part of the struggle for peace, freedom and independence of the peoples, against evil globalisation. We demand the immediate release of Slobodan Milosevic! We are going to continue this struggle until he walks free. The truth is on our side! We are confident of a victory! On behalf of the Participants. Greek Colonial Servants Dance For Uncle Sam [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- :http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/world/1502896 [Just as the pro-NATO elites in Athens collaborated in the war against Yugoslavia and helped the CIA and Turkish intelligence kidnap Kurdish Workers Party leader Abdullah Ocalan. And the reward for the Greek people? US-backed Turkish violations of Greek air space in the Aegean and 5,000 more Turkish troops pouring into Cyprus. And as for the so-called November 17 'terrorists,' any guesses as to who has been pulling the strings on this shadowy organization?] July 21, 2002, 11:08AM Greece police arrest 2 more alleged terrorists Associated Press ATHENS, Greece -- Police have arrested two more alleged November 17 terrorists, and said today one was believed to be a hit man in four assassinations -- including those of a U.S. Air Force sergeant and a British brigadier. Police now have a total of nine suspects in custody, including an alleged leader of the November 17 group, which carried out bombings, assassinations and robberies with impunity for 27 years. They are still searching for other November 17 members, believed to number a few dozen. A magistrate today began arraigning three of the first suspected November 17 terrorists, arrested after police made their first ever breakthrough against the group following a botched bombing on June 29. They include two brothers who confessed to nine of the 23 killings attributed to November 17, and family friend charged with a bombing and robbery. Another brother, injured in the failed bombing, remains hospitalized under police guard. Authorities believe they are now close to dismantling a group which eluded Greek, American and British authorities since 1975, when it appeared with the killing of the CIA station chief in Athens, Richard Welch. The arrests came as the Sunday edition of the Eleftherotypia newspaper reported that November 17 had been planning to attack a convoy of NATO peacekeepers heading from the northern port of Thessaloniki to Macedonia and Kosovo. NATO uses Thessaloniki as a logistical base for its peacekeeping operations. Police identified the two men arrested in northern Greece late Saturday as Iraklis Kostaris and Costas Karatsolis, both 36-year-old real estate agents who are close friends. Police spokesman Lefteris Ekonomou said Kostaris denied involvement, but evidence and statements by others in custody implicate him in several of the group's attacks between 1988 and 2000. They include the killings of Air Force Sgt. Ronald O. Stewart in March 1991 and of British defense attache Brig. Stephen Saunders in June 2000. Kostaris has also been implicated in two attempted murders and a string of armed robberies. He allegedly recruited Karatsolis into November 17, Ekonomou said. Karatsolis has confessed to carrying out three armed robberies and participating in the theft of dozens of anti-tank rockets from an army base in central Greece in 1989, Ekonomou said. Undergoing arraignment Sunday were Christodoulos Xiros, 44, who police say has confessed to nine killings, including those of Stewart and U.S. defense attache Capt. William Nordeen. His brother Vassilis, 30, has confessed to two assassinations, including Saunders -- November 17's last victim -- and a string of other attacks and robberies, police said. Both have been charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, bombing attacks, armed robbery and forming a criminal organization. They face life in prison. Greece does not have the death penalty. Vassilis Xiros' friend Dionissis Georgiadis, 26, has confessed to participating in a bombing and a robbery, according to police. Of the others in custody, Alexandros Giotopoulos, 58, is believed to be a leading member and founder of the group. He denies being involved, but has been charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. He is to be arraigned Wednesday along with Vassilis Tzortzatos, 48, who has confessed to taking part in killing eight Greeks and in seven attempted murders. Another Xiros brother, 40-year-old Savas, remains under police guard in hospital after being injured in the botched June 29 bombing. His injury provided the clues which helped unravel November 17, leading police to weapons caches and hide-outs. Savas Xiros has not yet been officially arrested or charged, but he is believed to have also been one of the group's executioners. Authorities are also holding Theologos Psaradelis, 59, who has confessed to an armed robbery and is charged with participating in one more. Ekonomou repeated a police appeal for any information leading to the arrest of 44-year-old beekeeper Dimitris Koufodinas, who had been living with Savas Xiros' former wife, Angeliki Sotiropoulou. He is believed to be a key November 17 hit man. Both Sotiropoulou and Savas Xiros' current girlfriend, a Spanish makeup artist, have been questioned and released. __ Do You
Georgia: Dissension In Ranks Of US Colonial Troops [WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK]
HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --- http://www.gazeta.ru July 21, 2002 Georgian elite troops quit in protest at slow army reform More than 100 elite Georgian combat troops have quit the army over military reforms supported by the United States, a senior military official said on Friday. Georgia is trying to modernise a disgruntled, often mutinous military that has been defeated in two separatist wars since independence from Soviet rule. Many officers are known to be unhappy at what they see as the slow pace of change. Washington has thrown men and money behind the project as part of its war on terrorism. Acting chief of Georgia's land forces Nikolai Dzhanzhgava, among those who resigned, said 102 troops and officers had quit. "This is neither a protest nor a revolt. We have left our weapons in the armoury," Dzhanzhgava told Rustavi-2 television. "We are leaving because we cannot perform our duties in such conditions while the so-called construction of a new Georgian army is proceeding." The troops belonged to the army's rapid reaction force and the commando battalion. Both units are part of the U.S.-sponsored programme, but Dzhanzhgava said the men had no objection to Washington's involvement. U.S. army Green Beret instructors arrived in Georgia in May as part of a 21-month modernisation programme that will cost $64 million four times Georgia's annual defence budget. Washington wants to help eradicate potential threats from Muslim radicals believed to have links with the al Qaeda network and operating in the rugged Pankisi Gorge, which borders the separatist Russian region of Chechnya. Georgian Defence Minister David Tevzadze told reporters he did not have complete information about the incident, but described Dzhanzhgava's actions as "inappropriate". President Eduard Shevardnadze, who launched the reforms, personally negotiated an end to the most spectacular army mutiny in May last year when 400 men walked out of their barracks after being denied pay for 14 months. //Reuters __ Do You Yahoo!?
