Re: [arch-general] This is the "arch"-general list - Was Burning From Command Line
Hi, Joerg does has few odd things maybe because he is wrong or we are wrong but either way; we shouldn't be rude to him.he is the reason we have working cd/dvd burning support on Linux. AFAIK, he is working on cdrtools since 1995, much before I was knew what OSS was. he gave us his full source code & efforts for benefit for community much like other free software devs. lets give him credit for that. Also the truth is one person cannot be responsible for 50+threads. other people are replying to as well, so should be Joerg be blamed alone? if you want to ban, he should not be only one. Regarding licensing, I don't understand much( I am no lawyer) but from users perspective things are pretty good in Arch. default package is cdrkit which should be good enough for most users. if anyone faces any problem, he can always get original cdrtools from AUR. the real problem is with other big distros but that discussion is outside the scope of this mailing list. @Joerg schily I would suggest you spend your time more productively. if you feel/believe cdrkit fork is in conflict with the Copyright law & cannot be distributed legally. Please feel free to take legal action. your current strategy is clearing not working. if you can't take legal action due to some reason, its best to accept the current situation and move on with doing better things which are good use of your sharp mind. Wishing you success with whatever you choose to do. Regards, Gaurish Sharma www.gaurishsharma.com

[arch-general] [OT] ArchLinux on uncyclopedia
Hi, Sharing ArchLinux's article on uncyclopedia[1]. Its awefully funny. I almost fell from my chair laughing. Here is a small part of it: "The almighty Judd has succeeded in making Archlinux the only Linux distribution which combines all the worst features Slackware and Gentoo have to offer. Archlinux is mighty fast, only runing on computers with a certain leetness factor (codenamed 686+), and features a package manager with an extremely funny name: pacman. When used with a large pill, Pacman is also a very valuable tool for devouring ghosts." Re: [arch-general] [Device Auto-mounting] HAL, KDE4.4 and tight default permissions
Hi, Idea was for quick and dirty data sharing. example, my friend brings portable hdd & I need to copy project files into that removable volume. I can't do that without being root, since the removeable device changes everything(I have lot of friends), putting entry in fstab is also not a solution. so I have to resort to opening dolphin in super user mode as a workaround.
[arch-general] [Device Auto-mounting] HAL, KDE4.4 and tight default permissions
Hello, I have a small problem with default permissions of Automounted Removable Devices. Whenever I mount it via KDE4.4's Auto-mounter. it sets all files to be owned by root. $ ls -la /media/Backup/ total 24 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 10 16:07 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Feb 10 17:30 .. drwx-- 2 root root 16384 Feb 10 16:07 lost+found I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in /etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got $ cat /etc/mtab /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid, nodev, uhelper=hal 0 0 $ cat /etc/proc /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This means I can't write/modify anything as a normal user. mounting manually every-time I need to transfer few files is annoying.HAL mounts drives by default only for root user. [1] hal 0.5.14-1 [2] qt 4.6.1-1 [3] kernel26 2.6.32.8-1 I was wondering how to change this behavior and so by default normal users could read-write into auto-mounted partitions. Re: [arch-general] Syncing the mirrors
Hi, I suggest using A Download Redirector and Metalink Generator like mirror brain(http://mirrorbrain.org/) to reduce work load on main ArchLinux Server. Also, we should have few other official mirrors apart from al.org from which mirrors of rest of the world would sync. essentially spreading out the work over couple of servers hence increasing the overall updating speed. We have to keep in mind that arch is a rolling release distro so mirror should update more frequently(like once in a day). Regards, Gaurish Sharma

[arch-general] how to Map shortcut keys in KDE4.3 to lunch custom Applications?
Hi All, I am using KDE 4.3 Desktop on Archlinux 64bit. I have query regarding Custom keyboard shortcuts. I have few extra hotkeys on my keyboard(Microsoft Basic wired Keyboard 500). They keys have already mapped and few of them work too. "Play" does play/pause in amarok. However few keys do not work. I want to map these these to do some actions. like I want the calc hotkey to launch a application speedcrunch. I think this has something to with Khotkeys configration, But I haven't been able to figure out how exactly to configure khotkeys due to lack of documentation. So I need your help, How to map Custom Keyboard Shortcuts to launch custom Application on KDE4.3? Regards, Gaurish Sharma www.gaurishsharma.com
