Re: [arch-general] Help with pm-suspend

Hello All,

I'm seeing a strange issue when I suspend my system. If I suspend
using either the command:

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower
/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend

or running pm-suspend as root, the system will shutdown and go into
suspend mode like it should.

But if I execute either of these commands again, it doesn't suspend.
What I found is that after suspending the first time I can see that
/usr/sbin/pm-suspend is still active. After killing this process I
am then able to suspend again.

Any ideas on what's going on here? Why would the suspend process still
be running after resuming from suspend?

Thanks,

Randy
.

I have the same issue. Did post about it while back.
I started disabling modules at boot-up and found that if I remove
bluetooth my issue goes away.

Assuming something does not unload cleanly at the first suspend.

Ok, some more debugging.

WTF??? This is a 2 year old bug in pm-utils. OpenSUSE 11.3 fixed that in
1.3.0. Please see if this fix gets rid of the log error:

Hmm, 75modules should print something like done or fail. What do you mean
by stopped working? What configuration do you have in /etc/pm/config.d/*?

Wouldn't know, I have never had problems with suspend-to-RAM on this
Vostro 1700 and Arch.

My /etc/pm/config.d contains one file, modules
with contents:
SUSPEND_MODULES=uhci_hcd ehci_hcd
I think I placed it there years ago after installing pm-utils

I think the problems started with Kernel 3.3

Also have laptop_mode installed.

Some more info on your setup is required.
1. Window manager? Browser used?

XFCE, Chromium, build from extras. Firefox has the same issues.

2. Which Nvidia Card and Driver used?

NVIDIA 7950 GT, driver 290.10.

3. Driver config?

Everything default, didn't change a thing.

That is strange. I have KDE4 will effects (wife likes them ;) and it
works fine.

Long shot, but try adding:

  Option Composite Enable

I don't think I can solve the problem with anything like this. The
weirdest thing is that some videos work great, but most don't,

Anyway, I'm on html5 for the time being, it's not perfect, but it's ok.

Phoronix is just really unprofessional and unreliable as a media
outlet. They constantly post information that is first of all,
absolutely atrociously, sometimes incomprehensibly written, and
secondly often inaccurate and misrepresentative. They also use amateur
reporting practices and lack standards, as we see with their Steam

Obviously this does not necessarily reflect directly on their
software, but I think it's wise to take anything from Phoronix with a

Thanks for the clarification.

I have no opinion towards them, but just want to add that the their test
suite mostly just run other tests (as x11perf or gtkperf) and report the
results in a structured way. So I do not think they have actually
written any benchmarks (I think?)

I see there are some discussions going on the nvidia, KDE and arch
forums about the performance of KDE 4.4 and latest nvidia driver, no
results yet as I can see.
My current setup with 190.53 works fast and snappy (no special xorg

I resisted upgrading nvidia. Now with the latest kernel update I cannot
keep the 190.53 driver.
Anyone have a solution for performance tweaking the latest KDE and

Hi,
you can upgrade to nvidia 195.36 as the issue has been fixed.from the
changelog[1]

* Fixed a performance regression with non-antialiased text in KDE4.

I saw that, but some discussions on the NVIDIA forums suggests that that
was not the problem.

I will update and see; can go back to Compiz if KWin is unusable.

I have updated to 195.36.15-2. And many things got quite worse.
I have no idea where to search for details or find out why it is going
sooo slow in some programs. But it happened.

I can't use an older driver because of kernel. And so I have to live
with worse performance until next driver update.

For Example: I play Tibia. normaly I got a Framerate of at least 50 fps
and much more. Now it stucks on 15fps. And so are some other programs.
But, like I allready told, I have no idea how to debug more about this
thing.

Another one: I also have in mind that glxgears, started without
parameters on default size, gets me around 45000 fps and now it has
abouot 15000 fps.

Baumi

I did an update and it was not that bad - small performance hit - but
not big enough to go back to Compiz.
Wow, 45000fps, what card are you using? I get 1800fps with my 8600M GT
and Kwin effects enabled, my Dell is getting old!

Yes, this volume was created a year ago or so, and broke last week
after boost + encfs upgrade. Downgrading to the versions I mentioned
before made things work again. This is the header of my .encfs file:

Nope, must be doing some else wrong.

is a long thread on our forum about that:

Yes, the thread suggests a patch that is a workaround for some

To get all apps to use it set a pcm.!default

Personally, I find using pulseaudio to manage it (moving streams etc)
to be much easier. BT headsets run out of battery, if that happens you
have to manually change .asoundrc and perhaps restart sound-generating
apps, if you're not using a sound server such as pulseaudio.

If you want to read up on the different sound components, just do a
google search. There's tons of articles out there, some very good,
mostly a bit crap. Lennart Pottering (dev for Pulse) has a
particularly good one I recall. Most on Arch wouldn't like his
conclusions though.

That's what I thought, thanks, will try Pulseaudio (thou I have been
warned by others).
So am I right in understanding that in a perfect world, all programs
will support Pulseaudio (config and mixing) and in-tern it will use ALSA
to do the lowlevel hardware side? (thus Pulseaudio will replace all the
other sound servers and layers out there)

Are you sure they aren't for amarok and amarok2 respectively?

update date doesn't matter for svn/cvs/git packages, they usually
check out the last revision at the time you build the package.

[arch-general] KDE, Bluetooth and Wifi

2009-05-27 Thread Manne Merak
So, I am new here, just installed ArchLinux on my work laptop. Had some
issues with getting X and KDE4 up, but all fine now.
KDE4 is different, I can see why some people dislike it - still needs
that polished feeling that 3.5 had, but hey that will come with time.
My biggest concern at the moment is Bluetooth mouse and Wifi.
KBluetooth looses my mouse, randomly, and there is no KNetworkManager
(well a finished one) at the moment.

So my question, what does the ArchLinux KDE community use for Bluetooth
and Wifi management.
(I can fiddle round with bluez and wpa_supplicant config files, but
would rather use some higher level config util)

From my experience, kbluetooth4 is rather useless (many bugs, no
features, virtually no active development). I've been using blueman
recently, which does all I need. My mouse works great with bluez and
automatically connects (all I had to do is set it to trusted in the
blueman device manager).
I sometimes have the problem that the mouse stops working, but then I
simply switch it off, wait for a while and switch it on again, but
this hasn't happened in a while now.

About networkmanager, I always disliked it very much and don't know
what KDE users do about it nowadays.

Using blueman I found that the bluetooth module was not responding as it
should (kbluetoothd just started with no error, and kbluetooth tools
just gave dbus errors!).
So it seems that the bluetooth modules does not survive a
suspend-to-RAM, will have to place bluetooth and btusb modules in reload
list for suspend.
So has development on Kbluetooth stopped? I cant find any clarity on
this on the KDE-apps page.
