Re: [arch-general] Thinkpad 770 - Init exists but couldn't execute it (error -26)
Just an update, I got the RAM changed with the brand new sticks, but the problem persisted. Seems to be an issue with systemd-based distros, because I managed to get Devuan, FreeBSD and Slackware booted, while modern Debian crashed on me with the same result as Arch. Not sure if downloading a new ISO for Arch would help at all by this point, will probably end up using Devuan or FreeBSD on this machine. Not sure if I should bugreport this either. Alright, I'll tackle those one-by-one. It's a Pentium II, i686-compatible. I've seen multiple reports of various distros working a-okay on it, including Arch. Might consider swapping it out for something better later on. Haven't tried other distros yet. Guus Snijders <gsnijd...@gmail.com> wrote: > Probably a stupid question, but have you checked the integrity of the > disc? I thought about it and it passed fine before. I ran it again and it returned full of errors on every land, so looks like it is indeed a failing memory. I guess I'll order some new DIMMs and see how it goes. I get the CD splash screen, I hit enter to boot, cue the subject title. FWIW parcellite is a nice clipboard. I suppose I should have elaborated on that setup, but yes, pretty much. I use nitrogen for the wallpaper, I do without a dedicated file manager, Dired and GNU coreutils do it for me, but my wife has a similar setup using pcmanfm. udev/systemd take care of mounting things. clipit is my choice of a clipboard manager. -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against HTML e-mail /\- against proprietary attachments pgpD7Ckw2x9zL.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Re: [arch-general] [OT?] Which is most future-proof desktop environment?

If using standalone window-managers is an option, I've been happy with Stump WM for almost five years now. Runs on even my slowest machines, has great Emacs integration, Emacs-style keybindings are amazing and allow me a very fluent workflow. Also gives me all the screen real-estate possible, keybinds pretty much eliminate the need for desktop icons or a panel and I think it's crucial when most of the time you work on an 11-inch screen. You can still bring the panel up if you ever need access to, say, a dock. Lack of extremely active development doesn't bother me, there is nothing that really needs to be added and if there is something you can easily add it yourself, real-time. -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against HTML e-mail /\- against proprietary attachments pgpLW9LVYf8ii.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature

I've had a system collecting dust for over a year (I was off in a different country) and I managed to update without any problems by doing the above, so worry not. For a more fool-proof thing, it's always possible to make a staged-update script working from the Archive. -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against HTML e-mail /\- against proprietary attachments pgptgpRyeYhT_.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Re: [arch-general] cups 1.6.1 doesn't detect usb printer
I abandoned samsung unified driver and switched to splix. I tried to add the printer via web and command line interface . Neither recognize the printer? Re: [arch-general] cups 1.6.1 doesn't detect usb printer
Hi, I'm stuck with resolving my printer issue. Maybe someone here can help me out. Long story: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148474 Short version: I reinstalled cups, removed all leftover files in /etc, /usr which wasn't owned any package. Samsung unified driver got replaced with splix-svn 307. Now cups doesn't see my usb printer. On a laptop with clean cups install it works. (snip) The troubles CUPS updates always cause have bugged me so much I had it blacklisted. What exactly have you tried to install the printer? system-config-printer? Web interface? Samsung installers? -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org - against proprietary attachments
Re: [arch-general] CUPS not recognizing the printer
Not sure if this is related, but after my update this morning I am getting this message in my CUPS configuration. Searched the web and only found bug report entry on the Ubuntu forms. Not sure of a solution yet. *The PPD version (5.2.7) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.8. * Not exactly what I had, but it simply looks like your PPD's outdated. Have you tried fetching a more recent PPD and pointing CUPS to it? I managed to get my printer working right after installing it in a Debian machine without a failure. As I plugged it back to my Arch and ran hp-setup it suddenly got recognized, but hp-setup kept failing. Installing via the CUPS webinterface helped, the Test Page is fine. -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org - against proprietary attachments
[arch-general] CUPS not recognizing the printer
Greetings all, I have an HP LaserJet M1132 hooked via a USB port. It worked quite fine until my recent -Syu, where it suddenly stopped working. Since I had hplip upgraded, I assumed I have to reinstall the printer, so I removed it via the CUPS webinterface and right now I can't seem to get it installed again! Both CUPS and hp-setup fail to see it, however lsusb, dmesg and usb-devices clearly show it's there. The device node permissions are fine too. usblp is blacklisted, but I tried the installation after probing it, which didn't help. lpinfo -v stopped showing anything about USB. It doesn't seem that -Syu has something to do with it, since downgrading all the packages I've upgraded didn't help, I'm thinking this has something to do with the libusb - libusbx transition earlier. Also tried the suggested solution to the same problem from here with no luck: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1119424#p1119424 Anyone can help? -- Serge Hooge () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org - against proprietary attachments
