Hello Akshay and welcome to the Arches project forum!

Thank you for sharing this information about your background, skills and
interests. You will find on this group many colleagues working around the world
in specialist technical fields, both in programming and in heritage. Do use
this group to ask questions and explore your ideas further, and to suggest
ideas and fixes for problems that other members post about.

There’s much more information on the project website, for example at
http://archesproject.org/development/ . Do have a look around.

The view from your window sounds beautiful – calm and peaceful.

Thank you again,

Hello,

I am Akshay Upadhyay, pursuing Master degree(M.Tech) in Spatial Information
Technology from DAVV university, India, Madhya Pradesh(state) and am fascinated
by GIS and MAPs working, as it is said “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

I have an experience working with Shapefile, Kml, GeoJSON, QGIS and with other
GIS tools. Please see the link of my project i.e Shapefile to SVG
Maphttp://www.cprogramto.com/svgmap/, which reads shapefile information i.e
from shp and dbf file and converts and display the same as an SVG vector Map.

 * what is your interest in Arches?
--- Arches project being an open source, comes up with an unique idea to
bring Heritage inventory and management system digitally where we need
to deal with location and its attribute values properly. Widely used Shapefile
is one of the non topological gis vector file. As I have a good
experience dealing with shapefile byte by byte, i want to accomplish and work
for Workflow for Uploading GIS Shapefiles project by joining in through the
Google Summer of Code.

 * where in the world are you working?
--- INDIA,
   Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

 * what can you see out of the window? Is there any heritage in your view?
--- I am seeing a garden, with a small temple placed in center of it where i
can hear and feel temple bell sound.

Looking forward to have a good time here.

[Arches] We are now in GSoC Student Application period.

2014-03-10 Thread Karl Fogel
Just so everyone knows:

We are now in the Google Summer of Code student application period,
which ends March 21st at 19:00 UTC. See the GSoC 2014 home page:

  https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2014

When they're ready, students should apply using the mechanism described
in the FAQ:

https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2014/help_page

For example, see the questions How does a student apply? and What
should a student proposal look like?. The FAQ also has answers to
other common questions, such as whether two students' individual
applications to work on the same idea could be accepted (yes), or
whether a student can submit multiple different proposals (also yes).

I see many students here already interacting with the project's
developers to figure out their proposals -- that is great, and is
exactly how this is supposed to work. Please continue doing that :-).
There's no need to rush an application; the deadline is still eleven
days away.

And by the way, Arches developers: it is still okay to come up with new
ideas. The Ideas List does not need to be static. If recent
discussions lead you to think of some new potential GSoC projects,
that's fine. Post them to the mailing list and hone them. In fact,
it's not even essential that they ever get on the Ideas List web page,
though of course we'd try to put them up there for reference soon. In
any case, a student can still apply to work on such an idea even before
it is on the Ideas List page -- their application can just refer to the
mailing list thread where the idea is being discussed.

Best,
-Karl

[Arches] Django Suit for Admin UI Improvement

Hi,

For the Admin UI Improvement, I'm just wondering is it alright if we use
something like Django Suit http://djangosuit.com/? It will certainly
expedite the improvement.

However, it is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial

whether that's something we would want to have in Arches.

[Arches] Proposal guidelines for GSoC participants

2014-03-10 Thread Alexei Peters

Here are some general things we're looking for in a proposal.

   1. The participant should provide a brief summary of their background
   and qualifications
   2. The participant needs to demonstrate that they have a good
understanding of the project they are interested in working on
   3. The participant's proposed solution should be clear and concise. The
participant is welcome to provide code samples or mockups as needed to help
   define your solution.

Note: anyone considering working with someone else on a project should keep
in mind that we may only be allotted one participant to work with. If that
happens it will make it difficult or impossible to be selected to
participate in the Arches GSoC project this year.

Hi Utsav,
I really appreciate your enthusiasm for the Arches project, unfortunately
I'm not quite sure I understand your proposal clearly. Earlier it sounded
like you wanted to add a new prehistoric monument, but we're not really
looking to collect data as part of the GSoC. Our focus is on improving the
code base with additional functionality.

Re: [Arches] GSoC 2014 - Application Logging

2014-03-10 Thread Alexei Peters
Hi Rakshit,
To quickly answer your questions:
1. If you feel like the Application Logging project is too small you are
free to combine it with something else. Feel free to propose what you
think is achievable.
2. You can provide a self structured proposal. You can find some basic
guidelines here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/archesproject/6YJWRRy3iQM
3. You can provide code or pseudo-code. Whatever you think demonstrates
your solution best.

working on research projects since around 3 years now and I have been the

My research has been primarily in the field of ICT4D and I design the

development experience along with system architecture design.
Professionally, I have worked as a Database Administrator for the past 1.5
year. My job completes this month and I'll be completely available for GSoC
 this summer.

Working in ICT4D, I've particularly enjoyed the application of ICT systems
in almost any field. I got to know about Arches project through the
organization list this year only. I really liked the work in this project
and was glad to know something like this exists. Regarding my GSoC
application, given my interests, knowledge and experience, project titled
Application Logging seems very good. As mentioned on the site, at present
there is very little logging in Arches. I think I can improve it a lot over
this summer. I am most comfortable with Python for programming and I have
good Django development experience. Rest everything I can learn before
project start. I'll be applying for this project at GSoC 2014. There are
few things I would want to discuss before preparing my final proposal.

1.

As per the mentors, will Application logging project alone suffice for
the expected size from a GSoC project? If not, then I'll try to link two
related projects.
2.

Am I expected to submit a structured Use-case in some specific format
for the proposal or I can provide a self-structured detailed proposal?
3.

Do I have to provide some initial code describing a small module of my
expected implementation or explained procedures will do?

It'd be really helpful if I could get some assistance on these doubts
and proceed with proposal preparation. My profile and projects can be seen

school’s robotics team. Now that I am in college, I am looking to continue
pursuing both my passions for progress while examining the past. I learned
about Arches through Google's Summer of Code and I am interested in working
on the import and export improvements project. Outside my window is a
quintessential New England town, which actually has one of the highest
concentrations of colonial homes and the largest continuous town green in
all of New England.

Meanwhile, when you mention uploading data, what kind of data do your refer
to, please?

I am wondering to incorporate the social media data of users to Arches. I
am currently working on representing and analyzing the location-based
social media data in GIS. I think the data which users generated in
different social media, e.g., Facebook, can be good sources, because:

   - Facebook has huge users
   - People provide extensive information on Facebook, including semantic
   comments, spatial locations and photos
   - Some data has a standard format to export/ import, e.g., open graph

It is also possible to connect the Facebook account for Arches. I have
established a website to extract the locations of posts for Facebook users:
http://geosocialevents.appspot.com/, and wish this can be helpful to enrich
the database and attract more users for Arches.
