[Arches] Re: Arches Community Forum launch scheduled for June 1st

2021-05-17 Thread Edmund Lee
Thanks for the shout-out Lindsay! It's been enormous fun to read all the
'Signing posts' here since August 2013 (over 5,400 views :-). Thank you all
for sharing your 'views out the window' in the last 8 years.

I'm looking forward to joining the new Discourse community for Arches. It's
always a bit of a bother having to digitally 'move house' as it were, but
the new Discourse community has some great additional features to help
everyone to share their expertise and to learn from others.

Hope I'll be seeing you all there.

Good to meet you Maritza, and thank you for Signing In. I think this must
be the oldest thread on the Google Group for Arches now ... I see I started
in in March 2013. So lots of expertise to draw on, and good to have your

Hello Antione, and welcome to the Arches project Google group. It must be
fascinating to be involved in such a internationally significant project as
REPERAGE, and to work through how Arches software for recording inventories
at a landscape or area level can be applied to work on a single building
such as Notre-Dame de Paris. Is anyone else using Arches just for a single
building or site?

Hello Hien, and a very warm if belated welcome to the Arches Google Group.
Thanks for Signing In. Here you will find a global network of expertise in
the deployment of Arches, and I trust the community will be able to answer
any questions you have. I've never had the chance to visit New Jersey, but
hope to be able to at some point in the future when we can all travel and
meet in the real world. It looks beautiful and very historic.

Hello all,

It's been a while (2 years!) since this thread went quiet, so I thought the
year end for those of us on the Gregorian calendar might be a good moment
to put out a call for news of live Arches installations around the globe.
Why not share a link to your Arches-based system here and bask in the glory?

Welcome! Many thanks for signing in Pat and sharing your experience and

[Arches] Marking the day - 5 years of open sharing of Arches expertise

2018-08-22 Thread Edmund Lee
Hey everybody,

We reach what feels like an important milestone today - 5 years since the
Arches Project Google group was opened up as a public resource. If you dig
into the message archive you'll see that the group first started up a year
or more before that, following a project meeting hosted by the Getty in LA
in June 2012. But from 22nd August 2013 this group was open up for everyone
with an interest in the Arches software.

It's a day to acknowledge the sharing of expertise, and the attention given
by 400+ members from pretty much every continent (don't think there's an
Arches installation in Antarctica... yet) talking about 600+ different
topics.

I say "Happy Birthday", "Feliz Compleanos", "Eid milad said", "Bon
Anniversaire", "alles Gute zum Geburtstag" Arches experts! ( ...and please
do add your own translation...)

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2018-05-14 Thread Edmund Lee
Many thanks for signing in Kasaqa - we now have a community here of over
400 members from around the world working to improve documentation of
humanity's cultural heritage using the Arches software package. I too am
enjoying the sunshine in Swindon in central southern England, although the
view is rather obscured by scaffolding put up around the 19th century
building I work in.

You are very welcome to the Arches forum Michel! Here you will find many
contacts working with the documentation of sites to help manage their
conservation. Do have a look at the Arches project website for
documentation of the system, and ask any questions you may have here on the

Hi David, and welcome to the Arches community!

It's good to hear that Arches is being adopted at Jersey Heritage. Maybe
you could post a bit more about the particular issues arising with that
installation? I'm sure your experience will be useful to other Arches sites.

The PhD sounds fascinating. Do you see a potential use for Arches in
documenting your research? Animal husbandry sites? Collection
documentation? Prehistoric transhumance routeways?

All the best

Hi Matt, and welcome to the Arches community! It's good to hear from you.
You'll find a mix of deep coding skills and broad heritage expertise here
to help and advise, and to learn from your experience. Could you maybe say
a bit more about what the UDS is used for at Historic England? I see you
also posted about documentation. I'll leave Arches project team folk to
respond to that - there is a lot available, so do ask specific questions if
you need to know more.

[Arches] Re: Resource graph - Related resources for node

2017-01-12 Thread Edmund Lee
Fascinating request Vince, thanks for raising it - I'd be interested to see
how Arches handles this use case as well. It's a common heritage issue -
either competing or equally valid interpretations of a given artefact or
site based on the (always) limited evidence that archaeology provides. From
my recording experience (way back when) a typical problem might be that
aerial photography has identified a site as a crop-mark, but we don't have
any dating evidence (so in the U.K. it could date from anywhere between say
4000 BCE or 2000 CE). It could be an IRON AGE / DEFENDED ENCLOSURE, or it
could equally be a MID TWENTIETH CENTURY / ANTI AIRCRAFT BATTERY (a rather
extreme example, but possible). For a user coming to that record, it would
be helpful to have insight into which authority had suggested which
interpretation.

Re: [Arches] Re: Arches M2M Interface for Metadata Harvesting?

2016-09-30 Thread Edmund Lee
Thanks Adam,

I am, I'll admit, out of my comfort zone here, but is there any mileage in
considering the existing mappings to the CIDOC CRM ontology available at
http://www.cidoc-crm.org/crm_mappings.html ? Does Arches (or could someone
with some Arches development expertise) set things up so that an Arches
database could provide data in another standardised format, if there is an
existing mapping to the CRM to assist them?

Hello Jim, and welcome to the Arches community!

As far as I can tell (though others may correct me - which would be great)
you are the first to mention historic garden recording here. From an
English perspective, of course, gardens are something of an obsession, and
we have a special register of nationally protected heritage just covering
parks and gardens - see
https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/what-is-designation/registered-parks-and-gardens/

Is anyone else working on horticultural heritage? How does Arches cope with
recording assets which are alive... any special data requirements?

Do remember to let us know what you can see out the window Jim!

All good wishes

You are very welcome Basav!

Here you will find a mix of people with interests in both the technical

please ask any questions you may have about the system.

Hi Sara and welcome to the Group!

It's great to be welcoming a new member almost four years to the day after
the meeting, at the Getty in Los Angeles, that set up this group to support
the Arches project. A happy time for all of us who were there to remember.
The group here now has wide ranging expertise in the development,
installation and use of Arches to manage heritage, but I think you are the
first to be able to sign in with a link to an entry in a live Arches
installation recording what you can see out of the window! The first of
many I am sure.

All the best

Welcome to the Arches group Peter! here you will find no less than 311
colleagues from around the world who share your interest and can help
answer questions. So far its mostly on the technical side, and that is very
welcome! but as a heritage management professional rather than an IT
specialist I would also be interested to hear more about the different ways
people approach the broader questions in managing heritage data. But that's
maybe for another discussion thread.

[Arches] Re: Storing related project / contract information

2016-02-17 Thread Edmund Lee
Hi Ali,

In case it helps your thinking, the MIDAS Heritage data standard developed
for United Kingdom datasets covered Heritage Asset Management Activities.
It's available to download at
http://www.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/midas-heritage/
.You'll
find the relevant bit on (pages 45-47), but you might need to skim through
the Introduction to see how this fits in.

MIDAS defines these activities very broadly as

"Activities undertaken to prevent damage to, or promote the survival of,
Heritage Assets."

I hope that proves useful - I know that MIDAS was one of the influences on
Arches ontology development.

CIDOC-CRM = 'interesting + scary'. I agree!

Hi again Ali,

That's an interesting extension to Arches. Perhaps you could say a bit more
about the type of contract and project work you have in mind? Are you
looking to Arches to provide active project management support (e.g.
tracking tasks and schedules for time and cost) or as a more passive
repository of associated documentation? Or both?

Best wishes

I would second this (+1) as a valuable additional feature for Arches. While
personally I'm very much on the Open Information side, there are sites
which need to be managed (and receorded in systems such as Arches) without

[Arches] Re: CIPA 2015: Invitation to submit papers on inventories Arches workshop

2015-01-06 Thread Edmund Lee
Happy New Year all,

It occurs to me that these conferences and presentations would also be an
opportunity to gather some worked examples and use case studies on the
application of Arches for use in future versions of the software
documentation, particularly that aimed at end users.

Any thoughts on that?

All good wishes

Ed

Hi Lucy,

Welcome Lucy! that sounds like a facsinating project, and an amazing place
to work. Do feel free to post more about your project as it develops - I'm
sure we will all be envious.

Shame about the view of the pyramids.. I was going to* insist* that you
post a photo :-). But what you can see sounds beautiful too.

Just an update on the view from my window... There is now a new block of
apartments built on the site of the Engineering shed at the Great Western
Railway site at Swindon in the UK which rather obscures my view of the 19th
century industrial architecture. But I can still just see the roof of the
Pattern Store (now a pizza restaurant)

I am working in New Cairo, Egypt on the Campus of the American University

I would like to say that I can see the Great Pyramids from my window but I
cannot. However, I can see some beautiful modern Islamic architecture, palm
 trees and lots of sand!

2014-08-26 Thread Edmund Lee
Hello Prakhar, and welcome to the Arches project forum!

Many thanks for sharing your experience with us, and for your enthusiasm
for the work we are doing here.

Other members of the forum will be able to suggest areas that you can
assist with. I just wanted to say 'hi' and invite you to share a bit more
about where you are working, what inspires you about heritage, and maybe
what you can see out the window :-). Our 'Sigining In' thread for the forum
is at
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/archesproject/K8LGizXh1a0/TAIyXMYmwgUJ so
have a look at what others have posted there, and, if you would like to,
add your own post.

All good wishes

Re: [Arches] Arches documentation has a new home!

2014-08-05 Thread Edmund Lee
Hi Yiannis, Arches folks,

I have three days personal development leave available this year which I'd
be happy to use on reworking (or starting reworking) the User Guide, if
that would help, and its not too late? I've no experience with Pandoc (but
that would be the 'development' bit :-). Not sure how far I could get, and
the timing may need to be flexible, but happy to make a start on it. Let me
know.

Any other volunteers out there who wuuld like to collaborate on this? e.g.
One thing I think the User Guide could benefit from is some use case
stories from the growing number of folk using Arches for real...

All the best

Ed

We only have the Installation Guide up on ReadTheDocs, thanks to Alexei.
One of these days I'll learn reStructuredText and I'll transfer the User
Guide there too (or I'll learn to code and I'll create a Markdown to
reStructuredText converter, but that might take a little longer). If anyone
else would like to take that on, please reply to this thread!

Maybe the open source Pandoc converter can already do this? Worth a
 look...

 Best,

A very much delayed 'hello' to Daniel, and also 'Hello and Welcome' to
Joon, Carlo, Jyoti, Walter, Tom and Alban who have also joined us on Arches
while I was on a long and much enjoyed vacation, and an even longer period
of catching up on other stuff.

We now have just under 200 members on the group - a whole conference hall
full! and an amazing collection of technical and heritage talent.

If you haven't had a chance to, do so, do check out the project web page at
http://archesproject.org/, the installation and user guides at
http://archesproject.org/documentation/ or the developers page and links to
the code source at http://archesproject.org/development/

Do also please feel welcome to reply to this thread if you would like to
tell us all a bit about your interests in Arches, where you work, and the
crucial 3rd question 'What can you see out the window'

Looking forward to hearung from you,

Ed

This online group was initially set up for the project team, and has just

How about we all share a bit of background, just like we would if we were
meeting in the real world? If that sounds good to you, reply to this thread
and share with the group some or all of the following:

- what is your interest in Arches?

- where in the world are you working?

and, just to make it a bit more fun,

- what can you see out of the window? Is there any heritage in your
view?

I look forward to getting to know everyone a bit better!
