RE: [ARIE-L] Consequences of eliminating Ariel

2012-07-30 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
I responded to Don's query a week or so ago, but have a couple of other
observations. Like Brenda says below, we will continue to use Ariel as long as
it works. Joe Ellison's observation was pertinent about BRI only using Ariel.
We request a lot from BRI so that is another reason to hold on to Ariel.

We just started using Article Exchange today and really like it. We dumped
standalone Odyssey the other day because of address book issues; also, it lacks
features we want. Our volume of traffic doesn't really warrant going into
Illiad. So, we will send articles through Article Exchange to libraries that
are not on Ariel. I've found that it's not quite as labor intensive to use
Article Exchange when you have the ILL request up in WCRS instead of sending to
an email address through Ariel. You can send the article and update to SHIPPED
right there in WCRS, rather than email through Ariel and then go to WCRS to
update to SHIPPED.

We use RapidILL to send and receive and have found that it is well worth the
price for the ease of processing requests e.g., you don't have to update to
RECEIVED anywhere, and the fast turnaround in receiving articles. I submitted
maybe 10 articles in the late morning today and by mid-afternoon we had
received half of them at least.
All of this is so interesting, weighing options and features and scenarios.
Thanks so much to OCLC for their marvelous work in developing products such as
Article Exchange. When Ariel goes, AE will probably be IT!

As long as Ariel runs smoothly, we'll continue to use it. However, we do use
ILLiad/Odyssey. Should Ariel ever develop issues, we'll stop using it, but as
long as it's running ok, I don't see any reason to stop.

Hello:

I posed the question on the ILL-L Listserv of the consequences of eliminating
Ariel as a document delivery option for our institution (COX) and would
appreciate any feedback from people on this listserv.

Are others also considering abandoning Ariel? Most importantly, would losing
Ariel be detrimental as a borrowing library if you no longer had the option to
receive documents through Ariel? Would email or Odyssey be an acceptable
substitute?

The majority of the people that responded on the ILL-L Listserv indicated that
they had eliminated Ariel and replaced it with, among others, OCLC Article
Exchange, Odyssey (ILLiad or Standalone), and Rapid.

Please feel free to email me directly or reply to the list and thank you for
your time.

RE: [ARIE-L] All three vs. either/or (was RE: Ariel alternative)

2011-08-18 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
I'm learning a lot from this discussion and second Christy's comments below,
particularly her comment about Ariel being a "working" product. When I saw all
of the messages in my inbox today from the ILL list from folks dropping Ariel,
I thought, as I have several times in the past, what's going on? Why are
people having so much trouble with Ariel? We couldn't live without it: we use
Patron Delivery and send articles securely and directly to our institution's
patrons' email addresses and to other libraries' email addresses. The only
issue can be file size sometimes, but we've found a workaround in Ariel by
using Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, to reduce file sizes--since, if
the size of the article is too large to send to email we can't save it on a
flash from Ariel and then use MyMorph to change it from a PDF to a TIFF. I've
been able to take a 68,000KB file and reduce it to 1,500KB. We can keep the
delivery queue for several weeks in case someone needs something sent again.
We've been lucky, it seems, that we have never had any serious problems with
Ariel. Whenever I've had to contact support, also no problem. We are on XP
and have 4.1.1.

We also use Odyssey standalone for importing articles and sending and to
receive. The scan function we could never get to work very well.

We also have a separate email address to receive articles directly from other
libraries. We check that several times a day.

We have yet to use Article Exchange, but I'm glad to know it's there as another
alternative to explore. I can understand that many libraries that don't have
Ariel or Odyssey find it very useful.

Nothing really concrete to contribute here.

We use Ariel, Odyssey, Article Exchange and email to send requests and we're
happy to receive requests in any of those ways as well.

Like Tom, we use Ariel because it gives us the ability to post documents to
a server for our patrons to view, so at this point, to eliminate Ariel
completely would leave us without a secure way to deliver articles
electronically to our users (a HUGE step backwards as far as service goes.)

Also, I would hesitate to drop a working product (keyword WORKING!) that
other libraries still use since our patrons prefer receiving desktop
delivery of their requests and I want to give lenders as many options as
possible to get articles to us in that manner.

2010-11-16 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen

We have been running Ariel and stand-alone Odyssey on the same computer for two
or three years now without any problem. We keep them both open and just
minimize one when working with the other. One problem can arise: If you are
scanning into Odyssey (we don't do this because it is cumbersome), you should
close Ariel first because the scanner with Ariel seems to grab everything and
will mess you up. If you are scanning into Ariel and have Odyssey open, there
is no problem.

[ARIE-L] ARIEL AND MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

2010-02-22 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
Our campus moved to Microsoft Outlook as its email system about a year ago.
For a long time there were no problems with students receiving PDFs through
Ariel. Then this past fall, transmissions starting going to students' Junk
Mail. So far, this semester has been a nightmare. The student email system
will be down for a few days, then it is up. Ariel transmissions will come back
to me Undeliverable. Things will go through to some students to their Junk
Mail, then a few days later they won't get through to these same students. I
deal with our IT people but no real solution. We are on RapidILL so we get
many articles in a matter of hours, but so what if I can't get the articles to
the students?

Has anyone else had similar problems with Microsoft Outlook and Ariel? If you
have, how did you solve them, or did you?

Thanks.

RE: [ARIE-L] Ariel and HP Scanjet 5590

2009-10-23 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen

We use the HP Scanjet 5590 and encountered the same problem--with our ADF.
Flatbed scanning was not affected. I don't think it's limited to just this
model scanner. According to other people on this list a few months ago, the
problem is probably caused by Microsoft automatic updates that mess up the
registry on your computer. Our IT person downloaded RegScrupXP on the
computer, ran it, and then everything worked fine--until the next Microsoft
automatic updates occurred. So, when we find that the ADF doesn't work, we run
RegScrubXP, which cleans up the registry and then the ADF runs fine. You can
leave a shortcut to RegScrubXP on your desktop so when you need to run it, it
is quickly available.

Interestingly, one day I found that the ADF was not working. I ran RegScrubXP.
It only found one error, but after that the ADF worked OK. That proved to me
that the Microsoft automatic updates were the culprit because updates had
occurred the previous evening.

You can get RegScrubXP free from the following address:
http://majorgeeks.com/Lexun_RegScrubXP_d2048.html#.

Also, if you have Odyssey on the same computer, you need to close Ariel when
you are scanning with Odyssey. When you are scanning with Ariel, there
shouldn't be a problem. At least we don't encounter any problems scanning with
Ariel and having Odyssey open. I was told that Ariel holds on to the scanner
when you have both Ariel and Odyssey open and try to scan with Odyssey.

I would be interested to know if this solves your problem.

We have been using Ariel 4.1 (the newest version) on a Windows XP machine
with HP Scanjet 5590 for over a year. In the last few weeks we've started
having some issues. In particular, frequently the computer does not
recognize the scanner. When the computer does recognize the scanner, it
will scan one page and then freezes. After the first page, if you click
Scan in
Ariel it reinserts the already scanned page rather than scanning a new
document. If we click More and use the HP scanning interface, we can get it
to scan but that's a tad inconvenient.

Our technology guys keep trying to say it must be something with ARIEL to
which I respond I don't think so. Hence I come to my Ariel colleagues to
see if anyone else is using this particular scanner and if anyone has any
input on what might be going on with our scanner.

[ARIE-L] RE: Scanner issues

2009-08-18 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
Cathy,

I don't know if this is your problem or not, but we had the same problem with
our HP scanjet 5590 only scanning one page on the Automatic Document Feeder
before crashing Ariel. Out IT person used RegScrub XP to clean up the registry
on the computer and reinstalled the scanner. That solved the problem, until an
automatic update from Microsoft Windows came through and again we couldn't use
the ADF for more than on page. Fortunately, the IT person left RegScrub XP on
the desktop, so when these Windows automatic updates come through and I test
the ADF and it won't work, I run RegScrub XP to clean up the registry and then
the ADF works fine. I used the ADF a while ago and it scanned several pages
successfully.

If you also have Odyssey on any of your computers, be sure you close it before
you scan in Ariel, and vice versa, just to be sure the scanner doesn't get
messed up.

There are several exchanges on this issue in this list's archives.

We setup a SF server and have 8 separate ariel stations in operation in

However, we have only 1 of these stations who’s scanner operates as it did and
is expected to function.
That is an HP Scanjet 7650 that can scan multiple pages.
The other scanners we have are:
HP Scanjet 8250 that scans 1 page and intermittently crashes ariel – so that
scanner is set to scan outside of the ariel app and imported into ariel.
HP Scanjet 550c that scans 1 page at a time – have to hit scan to scan each

HP Scanjet 8270 that scans 1 page at a time – have to hit scan to scan each

Fujitsu 5650 that scans multiple pages just fine but will not scan duplex which
it did before.

Has anyone experienced these issues and/or resolved them without purchasing a
new scanner?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

[ARIE-L] LINE 174 ERROR

2009-07-27 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
Dear Ariel 4.1.1. users,

Recently we have acquired the problem of not being able to send more than one
page through the Automatic Document Feeder on our HP ScanJet 5590. A scan of
one page goes through, but a scan of more than one page ends up with a
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library window that tells us that Assertion
failed! .Line 174, etc.

In looking through the list Archives, I found that some other people (see
February 2009) have had the same problem that one person said was probably
caused by service pack updates to Windows XP that mess up the registry on the
computer.

I have tried going into Start, Run, regedit on my computer but don't really
know what to look for. Through Google I found that there is software available
such as RegCure Registry Scan, Optimizer Easy, Reg Too, etc., that all say
"free download" but what this does is scan your computer for errors but, of
course, you have to buy the software to correct the errors.

Has anyone that has encountered this problem found a solution? Thanks.

[ARIE-L] ARIEL EMAIL

2008-11-07 Thread Breedlove, W Stephen
We have been having trouble getting PDFs we send through Ariel email to various
institutions' email addresses. Our IT department has been trying to find where
the problem may be at our end. We get the notices in our Ariel mail folder
from Mail Delivery Subsystem that tell about permanent fatal
errors, Host unknown, etc. Has anyone out there had a similar problem? The
email addresses we use are the addresses that libraries put in their constant
data on their OCLC requests. Could it be that these institutions have some
kind of block on emails with attachments getting into their networks? People
I have talked to at some of these libraries say they are supposed to be able to
receive attachments. When I forward these transmissions to my personal email
address and then forward them to the same addresses, the emails with
attachments get to their destinations, usually. The odd thing is that we can
send a PDF through Ariel email to a gmail address and it gets to the person's
email box, but not to a .edu or .gov. I've checked our Ariel settings and
can't find anything that seems out of order. Any suggestions? Thanks.
