I think so. Looking at the newer Bollywood dance songs of the millenium, i feel ARR needs to compete. I think it is the natural order of things.When someone like ARR invents a trend, It gets improved and may even get surpassed. It is like taking someone'a original idea which laid a foundation and improving upoun it till u get the credit for yrself. It musch works like business and commercial industry. [arr] Stuffing songs in period movies.
Guys, we know taht bollywood is incomplete without songs, but then thre are movies without songs. I personally feel MP could have been made without songs...background being necessary. There are films like BLACK that did not have songs in teh movie, yet fared well at audience. Situations are necessary for songs, and we cannot create situations in period or history moviesfact will remain fact. Look at Asoka, where AM tried to push in "Aa tayar ho ja" which affected the film too much. Bereft the non-period like music, wrong situations doesnt really impresses audience. They are more interested in teh flow of the movie than unwanted songs. Films like Lagaan demanded movies, it was more of a common man movie. And nobody's sure whether is was a fact or fiction. No wonder, Mangal is doing well, but situations are to be looked at before introducing songs at some places. Ashok Check out Yahoo! "In cities like Rajkot, Jabalpur and the interiors of Uttar Pradesh, the collection was not more than 40 percent on the day it released. Today's youth are just not interested in such a subject," opined Mirani. "If the film is made at Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million), the distributor could lose upto Rs 20 crores (Rs 200 million)," says a trade analyst who does not wish to be named. However, producer Bobby Bedi claims Mangal Pandey is doing well. He expects sales to go down by 20 percent on weekdays but is hopeful as there is another long weekend coming up, thanks to Raksha Bandhan. "I have already recovered my cost and now I will rake in some profit as well," Bedi says.. Nahta claims the long weekend will not help Mangal Pandey rise. Rahman returns to Tamil roots Shobha Warrier | August 17, 2005 18:30 IST Ah..AahA R Rahman's compositions in Tamil are few and far between. But as the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder. There is no decline in the enthusiasm of the masses when it comes to snapping up a copy of his latest composition; which, in this case, is the music of Ah..Aah, a film starring (and directed by) S J Suryah. The album starts with a bang. Anbe Aauyire, the first track, is sung by Rahman himself. While his voice may not be a purist's cup of tea, there is a charm to the way he belts out songs. After a couple of listens, you will start swaying to the beat almost subconsciously such is the magic that this track weaves. After the exhilaration and heart-pumping action of the first track, the second track is a sea change. It is a slow, melodious, romantic track the kind that one doesn't particularly like the first time around, but which gradually grows on you. In short, a classic filmi duet, sung by Madhusri and Naresh Iyer. Varugiraan is a pacy track, reminiscent of cinema from the 1980s. A track that is great fun to hear, and surely even greater fun to dance to, primarily because of Hariharan's inspired vocals. Chitra accompanies him, but somehow lacks the verve that Hariharan's voice seems to be full of. Ah..AahRahman continues to display fine form even with slow songs, as is demonstrated in the next song. Starting off slowly, it picks up pace and sounds completely haunting, helped along by an eerie quality to Sadhana Sargam's voice. The next track, however, is the biggest letdown in the whole album. In the typically seductive number, Shreya Ghosal exerts her vocal chords to the fullest, trying to sound sexy. It would probably have worked, if it weren't for the fact that one has been immured to songs of this nature, what with them featuring in every other Tamil film. With Maramkothiyae, however, Rahman is back to his splendid best. Another typically peppy number; it gets the listener's feet tapping to the beat in no time at all. This being the last track, it leaves you happy, and eager for another listen. And maybe another after that. On the whole, it may not be Rahman's best ever, but is definitely great in its own right. Mangal Pandey may flop Syed Firdaus Ashraf | August 17, 2005 16:59 IST Aamir Khan's historical epic Mangal Pandey, which released on August 12, is on the verge of being declared a flop. The collections have been sliding downwards since Tuesday. Mangal Pandey was released with over 600 prints worldwide and had a fabulous opening in city multiplexes. Unfortunately, it could not sustain and many theatres are running half-empty. "The collections have dropped by 50 percent from Tuesday and I think the film is a looser," says film trade analyst Komal Nahta. Costing Rs 500 million, Mangal Pandey is the most expensive film of 2005. Special: Showcasing Mangal Pandey There were sky high hopes from the film, as it is Aamir Khan's big- screen comeback after four years. His last two releases Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai were huge hits in 2001. Aamir, being the perfectionist he is, wore his hair long and grew a moustache to look his part. But it seems the effort was in vain. "The subject of the film was not right to click at the box office," says Vinod Mirani, editor, Box Office. "Traditionally, historical films have not worked. Another problem was that the film could not generate patriotic feelings among viewers." Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgan also tried their hand at patriotic films like Swades (2004) and The Legend Of Bhagat Singh (2002). Both sank at the box office. Critics felt Mangal Pandey's music and dialogues were poor. Besides, the first half dragged and youngsters could not relate to the 1857 uprising against the Britishers. "In cities like Rajkot, Jabalpur and the interiors of Uttar Pradesh, the collection was not more than 40 percent on the day it released. Today's youth are just not interested in such a subject," opined Mirani. "If the film is made at Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million), the distributor could lose upto Rs 20 crores (Rs 200 million)," says a trade analyst who does not wish to be named. However, producer Bobby Bedi claims Mangal Pandey is doing well. He expects sales to go down by 20 percent on weekdays but is hopeful as there is another long weekend coming up, thanks to Raksha Bandhan. "I have already recovered my cost and now I will rake in some profit as well," Bedi says.. Nahta claims the long weekend will not help Mangal Pandey rise. "The drop in collections from Tuesday was huge and there was no way the film will recover the money," he says. Yahoo! The tape I saw had nothing...everything was attributed to 2 photographs of the hugging saint. Thats it. Thankfully, they had a 'Vol 115' on the side sleeve and that could be the differentiator since one of the official sites mentions under 'Audio' - 'Cassettes' that they've more than 100 albums. But the site does not have any list you can choose from. My guess is that they're all called the same...'Loka samastha sukino bhavanthu'! Lemme try to get a CD version of it if possible and rip the particular track. Meanwhile could someone check with the Man himself about this curious association of his? In addition to a stint at The Royal Shakespeare Company, TV appearances have included Cambridge Spies, Perfect Strangers and The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall. He made his movie debut in Sally Potter's Orlando in 1992 and since then has appeared in Onegin opposite Ralph Fiennes, in Possession with Gwyneth Paltrow and then became the Bond baddie in Die Another Day. His latest role sees him play a British army officer alongside Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in The Rising - Ballad of Mangal Pandey, an epic musical about the Indian mutiny of 1857. For someone with a background in British theatre and television, it's quite a brave move acting in a Bollywood film. What made you accept the project? It happened really the same way as any other job happens. I got sent The Rising script by my agent, read it, and loved it. I then met with the director Ketan Mehta, auditioned on tape, and a month later he came back and offered it to me. I then met Aamir Khan who approved me. Next I waited nine months for the thing to get made. At one point I thought it wasn't going to happen. My American agent thought I was insane. I had just had the Bond film released and I knew I wanted to do something completely different and more challenging. I didn't want to end up playing baddies for the rest of my life, which was what Hollywood seemed to be offering at that time. Are you glad it did happen? God yeah! For me it was a real experience. To make a film in India, work with Indian actors and filmmakers, and to experience the culture was extraordinary. The fact it was a historical film about the British in India and what happened there was a real eye opener. I went to public school and grew up with a sense of Empire even in the 70s and 80s, and this gave me a different perspective. The idea of us, the British, being some sort of benign, educating force suddenly seemed to be a load of rubbish. It was a company running a country. I mean how twisted was that? It made me quite ashamed of our history. Tell us more about your character Captain William Gordon. Gordon is a complex moral character. He's seen as a working Scot and a captain but that's as far as he's going to go in the military hierarchy. There's also a sense of him being an outsider looking in and beginning to question what the British East Indian Company is all about through his friendship with Indian infantryman Mangal Pandey. Just like Mangal Pandey was a real life historical figure, there was a Scottish captain named William Gordon who during the mutiny went over to the other side and fought against the British. He ended up dying on the walls of Delhi fighting against his own army. What message is The Rising trying to convey? What's important about this film is that it's showing what happened in India. The veracity of whether there was any pig or cow fat on the kartoos (gun cartridges) is irrelevant (the Indian sepoys were forced to go against their religion and bite the casings of the cartridges, which later triggered the mutiny). What is relevant is that it shows that the British basically took over a country for commercial reasons and then rode rough shod over their belief system and culture. I think the Brits should look at it and say Christ, thousands of Indians and British died in the mutiny and its something we need to understand. What kind of research did you do have to do for your role? I had to go away and read a lot around the subject of the Indian mutiny of 1857, which I really enjoyed. I love doing projects that are educating as well. It's up to the script writer and director to get the historical facts as right as possible, but as an actor I needed to know what it would have been like to be a soldier during that time, what my daily routine would have been, and just a sense of what we were doing in India at the time. Although 70 per cent of The Rising is in English, there's a fair amount of spoken Hindi. How did you cope having to learn a new language? I learned tracts of Hindi and Urdu for my role. But the fact that I'm playing a Scottish officer who would have spoken the language with a bad accent certainly helped! Did the fact that The Rising is a Bollywood film fascinate or frighten you? It was something that kind of made me nervous in the beginning. When I read the script and really liked it, the casting director, who was a huge fan of Aamir's, told me to watch Lagaan to give me a sense of what his work and Indian films are like. I was just blown away by it. I have to say I was very disappointed by the English actors in it as the Indians were damn good. I thought the Brits were a bit weak but think it was down to the way the characters were written. How did you get on with your Bollywood

Mangal Pandey broke even on the first day Mid-day Reports suggest that Mangal Pandey The Rising has taken a drop from the fifth day (yesterday). But facts and collection figures prove otherwise. The film is creating BO history of sorts in USA, UK and Australia. Every detail planned Mangal Pandey was made at an approx cost of 35 crore. Says producer Bobby Bedi, The way I do my films, I dont lose money on them. When the film is made at such a high cost, everything is calculated right down to the last detail to ensure that it doesnt turn out to be a loss-making venture. We broke even on the first day of the release with the large minimum guarantee deal with our distributors in India, TV and overseas deals. How much profit the film will make, we will know soon. Unsure about overflow According to Bedi, the collection figures for the first week in India stand to amount to a whopping, eight to ten crore. It might run for a fewer number of weeks but we shouldve made our money by then. Says Sahdev Ghei, Vice-President, Distribution, Yash Raj Films, Mangal Pandey grossed 58 lakh alone in Mumbai on the 1st day. I am yet to get the all-India figures, but on the first day it opened to 95 100 per cent collections for the first four days. Whether this will translate into an overflow for the producer, we will know in the following weeks. The tactic nowadays is to flood the market with as many prints as possible to get in maximum people into the theatres and we did this. Cashing in on weekends The reason for a drop in the collection on tuesday, says Taran Adarsh, is because, Its the first working day after four days of holiday. All over the world, collections drop after the weekend. Its a normal trend Bedi has a plan for that, We will give schools concessions on the morning and daily shows. This Friday is Raksha Bandhan and Saturday is Parsi New Year. So again, it will be a long weekend, and well capitalize on it. I postponed my film from June to August to capture this time period.
