[arr] Re: Aa Aah - A Flop Show
Friends, I've seen Ah Aah yesterday at Mayajaal and I felt those Good songs were wasted with bad picturisation. On top of that S.J Suryah dance movements were pathetic. Especially for "Mayilirageh", I simply cant sit and watch it on screen, Too good melody has been destroyed by Suryah. Throughout the movie SJ's acting is not acceptable at all. Also he's unchanged with the criticism as a Pervert. First half of the movie is full of Double meaning or direct dialogues. So better to see with friends than watching it with family (even though SJS has mentioned in an interview that this movie is for the age group of 6 to 60). But still there are some +ve things in the movie 1. Santhanam's cameo on comedy 2. Nila - new actress is so cute and almost looks like Simran even in the body language. (SJS too mention in a dialogue "she is Half simran") 3. Urvasi - SJ scene 4. All songs are fantastic if you close your eyes and just listen. Over all its a OKAY kind of movie! Could have done better! [arr] Re: Melbourne Concert - '3D effects' review + other misc. details
Just read through some bits of what I wrote and realised that perhaps I was unfairly critical of the 3D effects. Let me just say that overall the 3D effects were quite good. I would much rather have the 3D format kept than just some random lighting at the background. For a first time effort by ARR's team, the 3D effects definitely had its share of excellent moments and will surely get better. Watchout for the Fanaa and Ghanan 3D effects, they were definitely outstanding!! [arr] Re: Ah Aah movie
SJS has done it again! Smut passed off as entertainment. It's not bad, though I felt New was better - the first half was terrific though. And despite the several dialogue mutes, the audience seemed to know what's being said and were having a hearty laugh. This film is STRICTLY for adults. SJS knows how to picturise Rahman's music. Thazhuvudu Nazhuvudu was the highlight, with the rest being superb to good. The use of graphics is cheesy, but in the context of the movie, rather fun. Great way to reduce the budget. The background score was just stunning - a very international flavour! I could watch the movie again just for this. I do wish he would release a score CD - it's one of the best I've heard in a Tamil film, and IMHO, was better than AE/Yuva. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Kunal Rajan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi guys, > > Ah Aah released and the movie is running to packed houses everywhere. > The general audience response is that the movie is average. but i > liked the movie a lot. everybody has worked hard in the movie. [arr] Melbourne Concert - '3D effects' review + other misc. details
Melbourne Concert - '3D effects' review + other misc. details The heavily promoted '3D concert' opened with a bang during the opening number 'Fanaa'. As ARR rendered the song, we could see several 'star wars' like special effects on the large screen through our 3D glasses. It started off with a fly over view of the 'Earth' (similar to the view from the Space Shuttles') and then a fly over across some other planet (cant remember exactly), then finally we had some star wars like space crafts flying all over the screen. It looked nice on screen. The 3D effects used for the 'Ghanan Ghanan' Lagaan piece was also very apt - rain clouds moving on screen, rain pouring down, the dry desert, etc. It was nice. The 3D theme for Thee Thee (Thiruda Thiruda) was a pair of fish quickly swimming under water. The speed of the fish's swim tried to match the pace of the song. It was not brilliant, but good enough. The 3D effects on screen for the other songs were average to poor. There was just some random patterns on screen which didn't really look 3D so no one bothered to wear the 3D glasses for most part of the show. To summarise, the 3D effects were nice for the opening number 'Fanaa' (I liked the solar system fly-over kind of effects, but not the Star Wars X-Wings flying around), the 'Ghanan Ghanan' Rain Clouds 3D theme was very nice, Thee Thee had decent 3D effects, but the rest of the performances did not have matching 3D effects which was a disappointment. If you keep in mind that it's a new attempt by ARR, then you'll enjoy it, but dont go in with very high hopes for 3D effects. Other Misc. Details === Film Director Shankar was present at the concert. He was sitting in the VIP area and AR Rahman mentioned to the crowd that Shankar had come down to Melbourne to watch his concert for the first time. The all time concert favourite, 'Dil Se Re', was not sung by ARR ! I thought this song would definitely be performed but it wasn't! Instead, ARR sang numbers from Ah Aah, Yuva, Bombay & Swades. All the singers were very much 'in key'. Alka rendered Saanwariya and O Re Chori perfectly, as did Sadhna, Hariharan, Chitra, etc for their numbers. They were almost flawless! AR Rahman sang Aararai Kodi (Ah Aah) extremely well, his vocals were also very good in Fanaa, Kabhi Neem Neem (Yuva), Kehna Hi Kya(Bombay) and Humma Humma. The only strong that AR Rahman sounded off-key was in 'Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera', it was good but didn't quite match up to the recorded version. 'O Re Chori' (Lagaan) was performed as an 'unplugged' version, with ARR on the piano and Alka Yagnik signing the main chorus in minor variations. Since there were no other backing instruments other than ARR's piano, the song's beautiful melody stood out along with Alka's amazing vocal skills. 'Hariharan' was simply amazing in his 'unplugged' rendition of 'Nila Kaigirathu' from Indhira. Sadhan Sargman was also great with her unplugged 'Udhaya Udhaya' (the melody came out very well). When ARR perfomed the poverty athem, someone in the crowd came out with the great idea of using the backlight on their mobile phone to wave as if it were a candle. It didn't take long before the whole crowd were waving their mobile phones (with the backlights on) and it looked beautiful ! Do try this out when you attend the concert!! AR Rahman's band was fairly small (I remember his LA concert had a very large band of performers), but still the band pulled out an amazing performance. Kailash Kher performed all of Sukhwinders Singh's usual numbers (Chaiyya Chaiyaa, Chinamma Chilakamma, etc). Kailash was a suitable replacement and measured up very well. Chitra did a great job with Jiya Jale and it was comparable to Lata's great rendition of the number! Udit's replacement was some member from the chorus (not sure of his name, possibly a new singer), he was good in his renditions of Aahista Aahista, Yuh Hi Chala Chal, etc, but it would be unfair to compare him to Udit, because Udit is so far ahead in his singing capabilities. These two girls from the Chorus (not sure of their names, possibly from Channel V's Super Singer competition??), were amazing in their performaces of Rangeela Re, Sa Re Ga Me, etc. The new talent show cased at the concert was of very high quality. I was expecting an average concert due to the lack of key singers, but somehow everyone managed to do such an excellent job that it didn't feel so bad, infact it was excellent! Yahoo! [arr] Colourful concert
A.R. Rahman Reviewer Jessica Nicholas September 12, 2005 Colourful concert: The Bollywood extravaganza cast onstage at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night. From left, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam, Alma, Madhushree, Alka Yagnik, Kailash Kher, A.R. Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan and Blaaze sing the concert finale. Colourful concert: The Bollywood extravaganza cast onstage at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night. From left, Chitra, Sadhana Sargam, Alma, Madhushree, Alka Yagnik, Kailash Kher, A.R. Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan and Blaaze sing the concert finale. Photo: John Kumar Rod Laver Arena, September 10 Milling outside the Rod Laver Arena before A. R. Rahman's show on Saturday, I felt like a rather drab moth surrounded by butterflies. Richly coloured saris, embroidered kurtas and sequinned scarves floated around me, as an audience of mainly Indian expatriates gathered in anticipation of this first Australian concert by one of the biggest names in Bollywood. Inside, the atmosphere was reminiscent of a rock concert - the stage adorned with musical instruments, giant screens and floodlit fabric panels, and more than 9000 fans erupting at the sight of 39-year-old Allah Rakha Rahman taking the microphone. As Rahman modestly confessed to the audience, he is not a born showman. A film composer whose success has thrust him into the spotlight, he is more accustomed to creating music in his high-tech studio in Chennai than performing it live in front of a roaring crowd. But there was something very endearing about watching this slightly reticent individual absorb the energy of the stadium and give it back so generously over the next four hours. AdvertisementAdvertisement Yes, four hours, with no interval. Apparently Rahman was so inspired by the ecstatic audience that he actually wanted to play longer, but was constrained by venue protocol. So he had to content himself with performing 40 of his best-loved compositions, almost all of which were written for Bollywood films. Not all film music thrives in a concert setting. But Rahman's music - like Bollywood cinema - has a joyous, larger-than-life impact. And the composer, who also sings and plays keyboards, certainly knows how to put on a show. His "Third Dimension" tour has pulsing, floor-shaking rhythms; acoustic strings and folk instruments alongside banks of digital devices; a parade of superb Bollywood singers performing the songs that made them famous; twirling dancers and giant masked figures; and a series of animated 3-D images (which we watched with 3-D glasses) projected onto a screen. As a non-Indian familiar with only a handful of Bollywood songs, I did find four hours a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, it was impossible not to be awed by the seemingly endless stamina - and diversity - of the performers. But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this hugely entertaining show is that it was presented by a fledgling, volunteer-run organisation, Charities through Indian Arts in Australia, whose directors undertook this mammoth tour at great personal and professional risk. As for the music itself, Rahman's wonderfully imaginative approach to film composition - incorporating ideas from contemporary popular music as well as classical Indian and European traditions - has created a fascinating hybrid and, for millions of fans (among whom I now count myself), opened up a whole new musical world. http://www.theage.com.au/news/reviews/ar-rahman/2005/09/11/1126377200142.html?oneclick=true "We neglect our cities at our peril. [arr] Indian music enters another dimension
Indian music enters another dimension September 12, 2005 Composer A.V. Rahman pushes the sound barrier, writes Philippa Hawker. It's not every day that a theatre audience gets to don 3D glasses. But A.R. Rahman, one of Indian music's most celebrated and influential composers, isn't your average performer. His show features 65 singers, musicians and dancers, and combines innovation, dance, spectacle, 3D effects and even a cricket connection - he is from India, after all. "It's a big experiment," he says from his studio in Chennai. The 3D effect is intended to give the audience a more intense, close-up experience in a concert that will be a representation of his broad musical styles. His show will include new songs and classics, including numbers from his Broadway show Bombay Dreams. Proceeds from the tour will go to Udayan, the Indian centre for children with leprosy that has a celebrated Australian patron in the former Test cricket captain Steve Waugh, whom organisers say is hoping to attend one of the performances. The tour is being organised by Charindaa, a non-profit foundation set up by two Melbourne men, A.V. Mohan and Mohan Krishnamoorthy, to combine charity work with the promotion of Indian arts and culture in Australia. AdvertisementAdvertisement Rahman, 39, softly spoken and self-deprecating, has a high profile in his homeland. He is constantly sought for movie soundtracks in a culture where, as he says, "nothing else exists". Cinema is phenomenally popular in India, and film music is the dominant musical form. As a composer, he welcomes a challenge, the expectation that he will come up with something different: "The only problem," he says, "is when directors want me to replicate what I have done before." Rahman has a degree in classical music, is at home with jazz and pop, has a voracious interest in musical styles, and has embraced new technology. He has built a huge recording studio in Chennai and is, he says, still paying it off. He is a workaholic and his albums sell millions - but in India, he points out, he is not paid royalties, just a composer's fee. Lately, he's been broadening his scope, composing music for a Chinese film, Warriors of Heaven and Earth, and working on Bombay Dreams. The show was the brainchild of Andrew Lloyd Webber, who became a fan of Rahman's work after watching some of his films on TV, and intended to weave the musical around some of his existing songs. But the composer, not one to rest on his laurels, created plenty of new material. It ran for six months on Broadway, "three months more than I was expecting". The Time film critic Richard Corliss called it "the most vibrant, varied, new score in ages". Another Rahman project, going into rehearsal next month, is a stage version of Lord of the Rings, on which he is working with a Finnish folk group. He is also composing a piece for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, having conducted them recently. Rahman's father, who died when his son was nine, was also a film composer. Rahman began his musical career early, supporting his family as a performer. He was a successful jingle writer before he composed his first film score in 1992, for Roja, a Tamil movie directed by Mani Ratnam. "I was lucky," he says. "I worked with one of the best directors in India and it was a wonderful experience." Just as this new show is a challenge for the performer, it's also a big step for the two men who have organised Rahman's visit. Mohan and Krishnamoorthy share a love of cricket and a commitment to the arts: Mohan is a classical music fan, while Krishnamoorthy has a taste for more popular music. They and their volunteers have organised smaller-scale Indian musical events in the past. Rahman himself contributes to a number of charities - "If you can do something to help, why not do it?" - but his work is the key. "Music itself," he says, "has a healing power." A.R. Rahman is at the Sydney SuperDome on Saturday. http://www.smh.com.au/news/music/indian-music-enters-another-dimension/2005/09/11/1126377204387.html?oneclick=true "We neglect our cities at our peril. Not so proud anymore eh? It's true. Shantanu Moitra, a man who has seemed to captivate music lovers this year with Parineeta has stolen two of the seven tracks. Kaisi Paheli Zindagani was lifted straight from Louis Armstrong's 1951 track "A Kiss To Build A Dream On." And a line from Soona Mann Ka Aangan was plagiarized straight from Tagore's "Phoole Phoole." Himesh Reshammiya's hit soundtrack Aashiq Banaya Aapne has two lifts in it also: 1) Dillagi, which is taken straight from Pakistani pop singer Ali Zafar's "Rangeen," from his 2003 album "Huqa Pani." 2) Marjaawan is a blatant lift from Fakhir's "Marjaawan" from his 2002 album "Aatish." Oh yeah, Gela Gela (Aitraaz) was copied note for note from R. Kelly's Thoia Thoing from his 2003 album "Chocolate Factory." What's sad is the fact that our composers go on and on about cleansing our industry of plagiarism. Yet, they seem to have no problem taking tunes from right across the border! And as you will come to find out, Reshammiya isn't the only culprit in this hideous case. Pritam is known as the King of Dhoom. Well, he stole a track in there also, Shikdum. Personally my favorite piece, I was disgusted when I found out that he took it directly from from Turkish singer Tarkan's "Sikidum." And when asked about the word Shikdum, Sameer and Pritam never once stated the original piece. Where's the justice? In the just recently released Chocolate, yet another hot selling album, Pritam steals Zahreeli Raatein and Bheega Bheega. The former lifted from Pakistani pop band Jal's "Aadat." The latter is lifted word for word from Abrar Ul Haq's "December." As is the case throughout Filmi Music's infamous history, most of the tracks that stand out as classics in the mind's of music lovers are the ones that are plagiarized. You start to question the talent and competence of some of these composers respect is soon lost. To add insult to injury, the originals (especially the Pakistani originals) are far better than there uncredited Hindi versions.Only a fraction of "inspired" tracks are legitimate ones. Recently, Dharma productions paid a hefty sum for the rights to recompose Pretty Woman in 2003's Kal Ho Naa Ho. If others do have the common sense to credit the originals, they'll simply put a name beneath the song. What's in a name? Proper acknowledgment and citations include the name of the original composer, the title of the track, the year it was composed, and to what album it belonged. A name. Ha!Just recently, there was a popular soundtrack that released with all sorts of speculation and controversy. Zeher was the name of the film. Apparently none of the songs belonged to the composers of the album (mainly Anu Malik, who is one of the kings of plagiarism). I guess that's why there's no surprise as to why the score was a success. Anyways, the original score was credited to Roop Kumar Rathod. Is that so? It turns out that two of the popular tracks, Agar Tum Mil Jao and Woh Lamhe belonged to, guess who .Pakistan. I think it was just a way for the Bhatts and Anu

Re: [arr] Ah Aah
ye ah aah.. is out.. movie is okie.. not a super kinda one.. the songs hav not been picturised so good.. i liked dhigu dhigu song's video.. varugiraai is not bad.. mayiliragey is totally wasted.. it comes abruptly in de narrative.. marangothiye is worse than this.. unnecessary use of graphics has spoilt the song and the dance movements are not worth mentioning.. BGM at places is too good bringing in the rite mood.. I liked the instrumental piece of dhigu dhigu with flute replacing the voice.. wow.. it was amazing.. but it comes jus for few secs.. :o( overall the movie is worth watching once.. but am gonna c it again today.. :D cos I didnt like NEW the first time.. later when i gave a second look it was quite entertaining.. [arr] Regarding the Bangalore concert !!! List of singers
HariharanAlka YagnikChitraSadhana SargamShankar MahadevanMadhushree (Sujata Bhattacharya) Sivamani AnandamRajesh 'Blaaze' Raman Kailash Kher Alma (From Bosnia) Ani (From Armenia) Hi Group, Is this the final group of artists who are going to perform in Bangalore? Isn't this a bit too small comparing it to the previous concerts of Rahman ? Any idea on what happened to Udit Narayan, SPB, Karthik, Srinivas, Musthafa and Qadir khan, sukhwinder Singh etc who used to always accompany rahman ? Also, is there any plan for Rahman fans to attend the concert as a group or something? Which ticket class are you all planning to buy? Is the 3D part extended to the standing class also or is it restricted to the seating class? To be honest the seating class is a bit un affordable for me, but I would not like to miss this opportunity, as I missed the Madras concert :(. [arr] Melbourne Concert - The 'Ghanan Ghana' piece !
Melbourne Concert - The 'Ghanan Ghana' piece review: Ghanan Ghanan - This is nothing like you've heard before!! It was just ARR on the piano & Shankar vocalising with just two words 'Ghanan Ghanan'. The original lyrics of the song were NOT sung, it was just 'Ghanan Ghanan' sung in different variations to follow AR Rahman's piano for about 5 minutes!! ARR opened the song with an incredibly mindblowing piano prelude, and then Shankar slowly started vocalising from low to high to very high pitch, singing only the words 'Ghanan Ghanan' in several variations - It was simply magical and something I will never forget!! Shankar proved he is unmatchable vocally. Following the vocal variations of 'Ghanan', Shankar paused for a moment and then said the following to introduce the second movement of this incredible piece: "In the film, Lagaan, the clouds come, the village start singing, but then then the clouds go away. Now, imagine for a moment that the clouds hadn't just gone past, but rather it started raining. Imaginehow would A.R.Rahman have composed the song for such a situation? Do you want to hear it?" ...the crowd replied with a resounding "Yes!", and then, the large TV screen at the back showed rain crowds moving along (it looked great with the 3D glasses on), and then Shankar started vocalising again starting at low "Ghanan Ghanan Ghanan", and then quickly raising the speed and pitch, rapidly singing "Ghanan Ghanan" to match the mood of pouring rain. The melody kept varying to match the situation of rain pouring down. It was an composition by AR Rahman & Shankar's vocal skills weree simply superb. It was the most incredible piece of music I have ever heard. I'm kicking my myself very hard for not taking a audio recorder of some sort to the concert...folks please take along some form of audio recording device to capture these incredible pieces speically made for concerts!
