As I know hindi, I think Swades is the album which got least jusice
for A R Rahman. This is one album where Rahman totally tried his best.
I mean u can't trace his trademark music like composed by a south
Indian composer. They were sincerely indian sound. Every song was a
gem. Forget the film's failure or poor marketing, the biggest shock was
for Film awards. They not even bothered for a nomination. Where as
copycats like 'Murder' were nominated. This is still a nightmare for me

Re: [arr] Re: leave the worst songs .so how many ppl have done justice?

2005-09-14 Thread Alex Kumar

As in tamil, there are also a few hindi films that
made no justice to ARR's songs. Swades was a good
example as well as TLOBS. The 'mahive' song was superb
but was not filmed fully. Even ARR has expressed his
dissapointment in his recent period films where the
songs went
unnoticed particularly Kisna and Bose. However Swades
was not a flop. According to B-O reports in planet
bollywood, Swades was an average hit. Also Boys was
not a flop at all. It was a success in tamil. It was
also a super hit in telegu and many other countries.
Just b'coz of the negative reviews that the movie had
doesnt mean it was a failure. There are many films
that received bad reviews but went on to become super
hits as well as critically acclaimed films that
failed.

ARR Fan,
Kumaran.

[arr] Benegal's Carmen set for take-off

2005-09-14 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Benegal's Carmen set for take-off

Saibal Chatterjee | Wide Angle

New Delhi, September 14, 2005

Septuagenarian filmmaker Shyam Benegal, coming off the box office debacle of
the historical
biopic, Bose - The Forgotten Hero, is all set to branch out into a new creative
terrain with a
Bollywood musical adaptation of the story of the classic coquette, Carmen.

The character is the female protagonist of what is arguably the best-known
opera ever composed,
Georges Bizet's Carmen. The story has been filmed and staged on numerous
occasions all over the
world.

Benegal's version, tentatively titled Chamki, will however not be based on the
popular opera.
My inspiration is the novel (by Prosper Merimee) on which Bizet's famed opera
is based, he
reveals during an informal chat in New Delhi.

It has already been reported that A.R. Rahman will compose the music for the
film. According to
Benegal, Chamki will be a musical in the Bollywood/Hollywood sense of the
term, and not in
the operatic sense. He says: Indians do not relate to opera.

Chamki will be bankrolled by the Mumbai-based production company, WSG Pictures,

Incidentally, Benegal has never made an out-and-out musical. He has, of course,
used music and
picturised songs in films like Bhumika, Sardari Begum and Zubeidaa, but being a
production
likely to be chock-a-block with songs and dances, Chamki will represent a first
for the
stalwart. The character of Carmen in my film is a performer, he points out.

Chamki belongs to a tribal community of musicians and mendicants who live close
to the Indo-Pak
border in Rajasthan. They are people who indulge in cross-border smuggling to
make ends meet.

Benegal has decided to cast Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar as Chamki. I was
looking for
sauciness and spunk, and not just sensuality, he says. That is why I settled
for Urmila.
Urmila had, incidentally, featured in Benegal's modern reworking of the
Mahabharat, Kalyug,
released 25 years ago as a child actor.

I see Carmen as a quintessential feminist, explains the filmmaker. She is a
strong-willed
woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. In the original story, she
is perceived as a
temptress though. You must remember, says the veteran director, that the
tale was written in
a Catholic country and it was, therefore, only natural that she was presented
as somebody who
was evil and led men down to hell.

What is it about Carmen that drew Benegal to the subject? It is a universally
recognized story
like, say, Romeo and Juliet. And it can be summed in four simple words: love,
betrayal,
jealousy and revenge. So it lends itself to great screen drama, he says.

Originally set in a cigar factory in Seville, Spain, Carmen is the story of a
sensuous,
beautiful Gypsy woman who aggressively seduces Don Jose, a soldier sent by his
regiment to
arrest her. The cornered woman aggressively seduces the man and the latter,
believing her
promise of everlasting love, allows her to make good her escape.

In the bargain, Don Jose is charged with dereliction of duty. He loses all he
as: his job, his
dignity, and his peace of mind. In the face of Carmen's refusal to tie herself
down to one man,
Don Jose is wracked by jealousy and obsession. He triggers a tragic finale.

Jimmy Shergill has already been penciled in to play the central male character
of a BSF
officer, while Yashpal Sharma is being considered for another significant male
part, that of
one of Carmen's suitors.

Benegal is currently on a location-hunting trip in Rajasthan. The film is
expected to start
shooting in late October.

In the 130 years of its existence, the Carmen drama has been interpreted in
numerous ways in
virtually every major filmmaking country of the world. In the silent era
itself, it was brought
to life on screen by Cecil B. DeMille and Raoul Walsh in the US and Ernst
Lubitsch in Germany.

In more recent years, masters like Italy's Francesco Rosi and Spain's Carlos
Saura have filmed
it with great success. In Spain, says Benegal, Carmen is adapted virtually
once every two
years.

The latest version of the ever-popular Carmen saga, set in a South African
township, has
garnered critical applause the world over. The Xhosa-language film, U-Carmen
eKhayelitsha
(Carmen in Khayelitsha), directed by Mark Dornford-May, bagged the Golden Bear
at the 2005
Berlin Film Festival.

One of the more famous screen adaptations of Carmen is based on Carmen Jones,
the all-black
version written by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was filmed in 1954 by Otto
Preminger with Dorothy
Dandridge as Carmen and Harry Belafonte as Don Jose.

Is Benegal's film the first-ever attempt to bring Carmen to the Indian screen?
It isn't.
According to the director, there was a version of Carmen made in Mumbai in the
1950s with
Sheikh Mukhtar and Sitara Devi in the lead roles.

Not much else is known about that particular film. So, for most Indian
filmgoers, Benegal's

It is almost certain- A.R.Rahman will be the music director of
Shankar's prestigious project Sivaji with Rajnikanth produced by AVM.
At the moment, Shankar and Rahman are in Australia composing songs for
their forthcoming blockbuster!

Rahman is right now in Australia for `Qantas Sigaram TV A.R.Rahman 3rd
dimension tour 2005', a music concert. It is a fund raiser for the
Kolkotta based Udayan whose chief patron is Steve Waugh, the
ex-captain of Australian Cricket team who supports the concert tour.

Shankar flew in to Australia on Saturday and is a part of Rahman's
entourage. He had in fact come for the concert on special invitation
of Rahman to discuss the tunes of Sivaji. Late in the night, of this
10-day tour, Rahman and Shankar discuss the script and mood of the songs.

A.R.Rahman- Shankar combination is one the best in Indian cinema and
they have sold more audio album than any others in Tamil film music.
All their albums like, Gentleman, Kathalan, Indian, Jeans, Muthalvan,
Nayak (Hindi), Boys were all chartbusters. The only Shankar film
without Rahman was the recent Anniyan.

Shankar fell out briefly with Rahman over re-recording of Boys which
took months. Now they have patched up, and are totally engrossed in
composing five songs and the theme music of Sivaji.

It is turning out to be a dream combination, Rajnikanth- Rahman-
Shankar- AVM!

hi guys and gals out there, ive a new member of the group and as i've
been going thru the postings about ARR composing for rajini are chart
toppers, muthu, padayappa and baba... as ive heard them all in
malaysia, it really reminded me of the ARRs worst songs poll... not
sounding mean or anything, but i feel that rajini and ARR dont make a
good combo by default, and thus the songs turn out the way they r. As
ive read in one of ARR's interview, Muthu songs we created in a rush
and they r just average, hummable yes but not very memorable. As for
padayappa only the classical piece minsara kanna is catchy the rest
just ok, and Baba, one track inspired from punjabi music, and the
rest nothing of the ARR style. Therefore i wouldnt be eargerly
waiting for this new ARR-rajini combo.

All said, compared to these movies, i'd rather listen to songs from
Sangamam and and Indira, with the classical yet contemporary pieces
being so mindblowing!!

Shankar and A.R. Rahman have been a potent combination giving
wonderful
music for great films. All their seven projects together have
been box
office hits. In the recent Anniyan, Harris Jayaraj was the
composer.
Although the songs did well, the background score did not jell
well
with the movie and was not much appreciated by the audience.
Therefore,
Shankar is interested in bringing Rahman back with the Rajini
film,
Sivaji. Rahman has already scored music for Rajini's Muthu,

I have not heard Tamil nor Hindi muthu, but have read the
 lyrics in hindi.

 were these chart toppers?

 I am amazed?

  Padayappa
and Baba. Since the songs of these films were chart toppers,
Rajini is
also keen that Rahman should compose the music for SivajI.

Seems Sivaji is going to be a Tamil film?

any chance of it having a hindi version, even if dubbed?

And is it about Chhatrapati Shivaji?

2005-09-14 Thread karishma_saali
believe me its hard to put down the whole experience of ARR's concert
in words, its simply amazing.. not just him but the whole team
rocks!! but of course.. he is the BOSS!!!

im from johor bahru in Malaysia, and i'd like to find out whr can i
get a copy of ARR's live concert? any1 out there who knows or has a

 Hi All,

I went to the Melbourne concert last night and it was hands down,
the
greatest night of my life. They beautifully maintained the balance
between slow and fast numbers. Some of the best parts of the night
are
Humma Humma encore version, Poverty anthem, Ghanan Ghanan (the way
arr
would have composed it if it had a happy ending, fantastic singing
by
 shaker mahadevan there) …

The encore version of humma2 was so good every body was jumping up
and down by the end of it. It lasted almost 10 minutes. And then
there
was the Ishq bina/Loves never easy combo, beautifully switching
between languages. Switching languages was one of the highlights of
the night (hariharan and shankar perfecting it).

In the beginning they started naming all the movies from which
songs
will be played and all were Hindi movies and we thought there may
not
be any tamil songs. To our surprise, there were a lot of Tamil
songs
also (around 60% till almost the end) and then the percentages got
shifted very much in favor of Tamil, and some Hindi guys got bit
restless. But they were very sportive. There were one after another
mind blowing tracks from boys(sa re ga me), Thiruda Thiruda (Thee
Thee) and Ah Aah(anbe aruyire and woodpercker song, that's what
they
called it) which they might not know.

The more I write the more I remember and I am realizing that there
is
no way I can put all the excitement into words. I have missed out
so
much stuff. The audience was also so good. We were jumping up and
down
for the fast songs and when songs like Bombay theme came up, there
was
absolute silence and the sounds were crystal clear.

They played 4 hours of only massive hits and still loads of hits
couldn't be played, can any other composer/musician/artist boast of
 such a collection?

I will try to list all the songs I remember. Other who have
attended
the event please complete the list.

 Thanks

[arr] I've been making too many sacrifices: Rehman

2005-09-14 Thread djtamilstyle
I've been making too many sacrifices: Rehman
[Interview by Subhash K. Jha]
Wednesday, September 14, 2005

A.R. Rahman thinks he has been making too many concessions with the
way his songs are treated in films and says Bollywood needs to be
proud of its music again.

I''ve been making too many sacrifices, especially with the way my
songs were used. I think Hindi films need to become proud of songs
and music again, Rehman told IANS in an interview.

He also brushes aside the charge of being repetitive, saying he has
simply done a few too many period films. While Rehman wants to
return to the format of musicals, he is also keen on composing for a
string of Hindi films.

It''s better to be burnt out than fade away, he said. Excerpts
from the interview:

So many period films...and now Mangal Pandey. What challenges?
I was offered three period films at the same time, including one
from Roland Joffe. I was quite wary of doing Mangal Pandey until I
heard the script. I thought there was no scope for music.

Then when director Ketan Mehta and Aamir Khan came to me I quite
liked the interpretation. So we plunged into it. Before that I was
like...'Oh no, not another period film! I just did Bhagat Singh
and Bose...Composing for a sutradhar, as I've done in Mangal
Pandey, was a new experience for me.

How did you pick Kailash Kher for the title song?
I wanted a very Nusrat Ali Khan kind of voice. Lyricist Mehboob
suggested Kailash. He has done a fabulous job. Vaari vaari
in Mangal Pandey is my first mujra.

Your music in Bose - The Forgotten Hero went unnoticed?
They didn't picturise a large part of my music. When the music isn't
picturised, it goes unnoticed. The junta disregarded it. I told
Shyam Benegal that it's imperative to cash in on whatever songs I
compose. Why be apologetic about the music?

But I must say I enjoyed composing for Bose...For me, every score
is enjoyable. It can't be helped if some of them went out of hand.
Did the music for a film called Adaa, I don't know what happened.
I put my best effort in all of them. The rest is up to god.

In Mumbai there's a growing feeling that your songs have become
repetitive?
Which of my songs are repetitive? Tell me, so I can correct myself.
According to me, the repetitive pattern in my career was caused by
the series of period films. But I got paid very well.

Is money important?
Not as a rule. But I had invested in a studio in Chennai that cost
more than I had bargained for. I didn't have to take a loan. And I
enjoyed doing all the period films. But now whatever films I have on
hand - like Abbas Tyrewala's Jane Tu and Rakesh Mehra's Rang De
Basanti, Shyam Benegal and Rajiv Menon's new film - aren't period
films.

Too many assignments in Hindi?
Better to be burnt out than fade way...1999 was my busiest period -
Dil Se, Taal, Bombay Dreams, Kandukondain Kandukondain. I
love working on musical subjects like Taal, Sapne
and Kandukondain Kandukondain. Ghai and Mani Ratnam are two people
who know what to do with music. I want to return to that format.

For now I've stopped doing period films though they've helped me go
new areas of my creativity. Their fate wasn't in my hand. I'm doing
three southern Indian films. I'm happy about them. At least they
won't feel let down and they won't feel I've run away, like they
sometimes believe in Mumbai.

What went wrong with the music in Yuva?
In Yuva, Mani Ratnam didn't want songs in the first place. The
songs were done largely for the background. I knew from the start
there would be very high expectations from our combination. I knew
they were in for a letdown, though not as much as they finally were.

I've been making too many sacrifices, especially with the way my
songs were used. I think Hindi films need to become proud of songs
and music again. That's what the history of our cinema is about.
Even my Hum hain iss pal yahan in Ghai's Kisna was used in the
background.

The music boom in the Mumbai film industry is over.
The boom in music happened in the mid-1990s. That's when Roja
happened. During the last 7 to 8 years the whole equation between
music and cinema has changed.

Dhoom had one hit song, and that song made the film a hit. I feel
audiences shouldn't be tortured with unwanted songs. At the same
time why deprive them of something they love?

Anything in Hindi songs that you like lately?
I like M.M. Kreem's songs. Jadu hai nasha hai in Jism and some
of the Pakistani songs. Otherwise Hindi music seems to be following
the herd mentality. There's no time to think...One Kaliyon ka
chaman and everyone uses the same rhythms. Fortunately I'm not
forced to do anything that I don't want to.

Are you happy with your career?
My career is not in my hands. I'm happy with what I'm doing. But I'm
always thirsty for more. There's no fixed working place for me.
Chennai is my home, I guess. But I want to reach out to the listener
in Kanjeevaram and Kolkata. Their

[arr] (arr) Rahman Instrumentals - Please Please Read

2005-09-14 Thread bhaji bhadran

Dear All / .. Sirish,

I have a Highly SPECIAL REQUEST to make friends:

Can any one of you kindly give me the INSTRUMENTALS of ARRahman like Roja, GEntleman and any other ones u can lay ur hands on. I have all the latest instrumental which comes along with a film, but not the ones which have been converted from film music.

This is actually for my BOSS, who inspite of being a Syrian, was and is a die-hard fan of ARRahman, but didnt know who he was. I recently (exactly 3 days back) came to know that he was a die-hard and for the past 10 years was contineously hearing Bombay Theme, which he said always soothed his soul, and i said Rahmanwas our own and he was taken aback and virtually pleaded to give more of the music, mostly Instrumentals as he told he wont be understanding hindi ot tamil. I am now compiling it for him.

I was overwhelmed by his act, the way he has placed AR Rahman in his mind, even though not knowing him and only one song wiht him.

PLEASE HELP. ANY LITTLE HELP FROM ANY OF MY FRIENDS HERE WILL BE HUGELY APPRECIATED. Thank You very much for going thru.

Lets together show him a new magical world of "International Music from an Indian Genius". BH.

Excerpts from the interview: So many period films...and now "Mangal Pandey". What challenges?I was offered three period films at the same time, including one from Roland Joffe. I was quite wary of doing "Mangal Pandey" until I heard the script. I thought there was no scope for music. Then when director Ketan Mehta and Aamir Khan came to me I quite liked the interpretation. So we plunged into it. Before that I was like...'Oh no, not another period film! I just did "Bhagat Singh" and "Bose"...Composing for a sutradhar, as I've done in "Mangal Pandey", was a new experience for me.How did you pick Kailash Kher for the title song?I wanted a very
Nusrat Ali Khan kind of voice. Lyricist Mehboob suggested Kailash. He has done a fabulous job. "Vaari vaari" in "Mangal Pandey" is my first mujra.Your music in "Bose - The Forgotten Hero" went unnoticed? They didn't picturise a large part of my music. When the music isn't picturised, it goes unnoticed. The junta disregarded it. I told Shyam Benegal that it's imperative to cash in on whatever songs I compose. Why be apologetic about the music? But I must say I enjoyed composing for "Bose"...For me, every score is enjoyable. It can't be helped if some of them went out of hand. Did the music for a film called "Adaa", I don't know what happened. I put my best effort in all of them. The rest is up to god.In Mumbai there's a growing feeling that your songs have become repetitive?Which of my songs are repetitive? Tell me, so I
can correct myself. According to me, the repetitive pattern in my career was caused by the series of period films. But I got paid very well.Is money important? Not as a rule. But I had invested in a studio in Chennai that cost more than I had bargained for. I didn't have to take a loan. And I enjoyed doing all the period films. But now whatever films I have on hand - like Abbas Tyrewala's "Jane Tu" and Rakesh Mehra's "Rang De Basanti", Shyam Benegal and Rajiv Menon's new film - aren't period films.Too many assignments in Hindi?Better to be burnt out than fade way...1999 was my busiest period -"Dil Se", "Taal", "Bombay Dreams", "Kandukondain Kandukondain". I love working on musical subjects like "Taal", "Sapne" and "Kandukondain Kandukondain". Ghai and Mani Ratnam are two people who know what to do with music. I want to
return to that format. For now I've stopped doing period films though they've helped me go new areas of my creativity. Their fate wasn't in my hand. I'm doing three southern Indian films. I'm happy about them. At least they won't feel let down and they won't feel I've run away, like they sometimes believe in Mumbai. What went wrong with the music in "Yuva"?In "Yuva", Mani Ratnam didn't want songs in the first place. The songs were done largely for the background. I knew from the start there would be very high expectations from our combination. I knew they were in for a letdown, though not as much as they finally were.I've been making too many sacrifices, especially with the way my songs were used. I think Hindi films need to become proud of songs and music again. That's what the history of our cinema is about. Even my
"Hum hain iss pal yahan" in Ghai's "Kisna" was used in the background. The music boom in the Mumbai film industry is over. The boom in music happened in the mid-1990s. That's when "Roja" happened. During the last 7 to 8 years the whole equation between music and cinema has changed. "Dhoom" had one hit song, and that song made the film a hit. I feel audiences shouldn't be tortured with unwanted songs. At the same time why deprive them of something they love?Anything in Hindi songs that you like lately?I like M.M. Kreem's songs. "Jadu hai nasha hai" in "Jism" and some of the Pakistani songs. Otherwise Hindi music seems to be following the

chart toppers, muthu, padayappa and baba... as ive heard them all in malaysia, it really reminded me of the ARRs worst songs poll...not sounding mean or anything, but i feel that rajini and ARR dont
make a good combo by default, and thus the songs turn out the way theyr. As ive read in one of ARR's interview, Muthu songs we created in arush and they r just average, hummable yes but not very memorable. As
for padayappa only the classical piece minsara kanna is catchy therest just ok, and Baba, one track inspired from punjabi music, and the rest nothing of the ARR style. Therefore i wouldnt be eargerly
waiting for this new ARR-rajini combo. All said, compared to these movies, i'd rather listen to songsfrom Sangamam and and Indira, with the classical yet contemporarypieces

Re: [arr] ayaiyo song...

2005-09-14 Thread up84mouli
Hi guys...

Much of the listings may be true, but there is a point to be noted:

When other MDs copy a song or a part of it, *some* ARR fans say
blatant lift, copycat and all that whereas Rahman's little-little
copies are termed as: inspiration, resemblance, self-accepted
inspiration, raga similarity, time pressure,
producer/director/actor recommendation etc.

Some people have come up with this: there are only 7 ragas and some
resemblences cannot be avoided, so thats NOT copying and all that...

Is it not possible that the *copiers* faced none of the problems. It
might not be known to the outside world, but why do you discount the
possibility??

A good musician gets good films, good respect from the singers and
those who do business with them and his/her own personality. We should
try to take all those into account and pass neutral comments.

That way R D Burman, S D Burman, SEL etc. may not be that bad. Even
Mozart *lifted* a tune which was played in a Church and which was kept
secret so that no one else (other than those who come there)
experiences its devine bliss. But because Mozart *did* copy it and
distributed the notes, many people were able to enjoy it.

Was he right or wrong??

What would you say for Rahman's version of O saathi Re, tere bina bhi
kya jeena which was O Bhaavray...dekho in deewaanonko

If you know tamil very well, sing this: thanga padakkathin mele
(MSV's number for MGR film), which became one of Rahman's hits: Enna
viai azhagay. Any non-arr-fan would say: wow. good xerox technology!

There are some more examples of this kind of ___ (you can name
it), but one thing is for sure...

Rahman definitely is blessed with some kind of devine grace. Just like
many people say Sachin was *born to just play cricket*, many more
people will say Rahman was *born just 4 music*.

Thanks for reading.
Chandra.

 Subject: [arr] Rahman's Worst songs

 hey guys
plz, do not scold me for writing this title, it was
 just to grab attention

see, we are die hard rahman fans and each song of
 him is like a
 precious gift for us

but are there any songs u guys do not like or like
 less?

 just write here

but u should specify the reason behind that (so that
 there is a
 constructive criticism here)

for me, there are two songs

 1. Rojana- Lakeer (its too loud in the beginning and
 do not look like
an a r rahman song or u can say that a song which
 was finished in
hurry, plus viva are the worst in singing)
[although there are some really really good pieces
 of flute in between
 the stanzas]

 2. Bano Rani- 1947 The Earth (first of all i hate
 the lyrics and
secondly the song looks very annoying, whenever i
 played it, i never
 listened it till the end)
[but again rahman has done wonderfull job in the
 stanzas]

 bye
