Deepa Mehta's brave move forward Lisa Ray as Kalyani in Deepa Mehta's Water, the third film in her trilogy. Mehta had to produce the film in secret to avoid protests that dogged her after previous films. By Martin Tsai Nov 03 2005 Following Fire (1996) and Earth (1998), director Deepa Mehta finally completes her acclaimed and controversial "elements" trilogy with Water. Mehta's devastating depictions of gender disparity and religious turmoil in India provoked right-wing Hindu fundamentalists to stage protests, ransack theatres, issue death threats and even force the shutdown of Water's production five years ago. The director went on to make the lightweight Bollywood/Hollywood and The Republic of Love before returning to Water - this time filming secretly in Sri Lanka. Hindu holy texts dictate that a wife has only three options upon the death of her husband: She must either burn along with his remains, remarry his younger brother, or live the remainder of her life in self-denial. Set in Colonial-era India inside a house for spurned widows, Water continues the trilogy's exploration of the culture's unspoken and unchallenged hypocrisies. Eight-year-old Chuyia (Sarala) doesn't recall ever marrying, but the passing of her husband nevertheless divests her of sari, jewelry, hair, parents, a normal childhood and the possibility of happiness. The wretchedness of the women who keep her company allows her to grasp the bleak existence ahead: Elderly Patiraji (Vidula Javalgekar) fritters away her last days craving some sweets. Obese Madhumati (Manorma) bitterly abuses everyone. Beneath her resilient exterior, Shakuntala (Seema Biswas of Bandit Queen) still tries to reconcile her faith with her predicament as a widow. Lovely Kalyani (Lisa Ray of Bollywood/Hollywood) gets to keep her locks only because she must work as a prostitute to support the household. Handsome and erudite Narayan (John Abraham) takes a liking to Kalyani, but her circumstances threaten to keep them apart. With a story that recalls both Romeo and Juliet and A Little Princess, Water has the surface trappings of a timeless tale. But by using a child's perspective (Ã la Earth), a doomed romance, a dastardly villain and an unsettling tangent about coerced prostitution, the film often seems to be drip with manipulation. Furthermore, it endlessly bludgeons the audience with disconcerting scenes of widows enduring taunts and discrimination. With all the tragic turns of events and the uniformly cardboard characters in the picture, Mehta unwittingly invites skepticism from wary viewers. Landing the coveted opening spots at five festivals across the country (Vancouver and Toronto included) and a high-profile American distribution deal with Fox Searchlight, Water is one of the most prodigious Canadian films of the year. Rating: It was worth the wait and the fight to immerse ourselves in this Water . Back in 2000, because of right-wing Hindu extremists in India, writer/director Deepa Mehta found the production of this conclusion to her elements trilogy shut down. Four years later, she recast the film and relocated to Sri Lanka, and the result is a compelling, absorbing tale of oppression and survival. It's 1938 India, and feisty, imaginative eight-year-old Chuyia (Sarala), her betrothed husband dead, finds herself removed from her family and shut up in a reclusive house for Hindu widows, who, according to tradition, must live in penitence until death. There she meets other unfortunate widows, including the grotesque leader Madhumati (Manorama), the dignified Shakuntala ( Seema Biswas) and the young beauty Kalyani ( Lisa Ray ), whom Madhumati prostitutes to wealthy Brahmins. Mehta's script starts as the simple story of a Dickensian heroine (newcomer Sarala is incredibly expressive and intelligent) and opens up to become a riveting examination of changing religious and social mores, with the presence of Mahatma Gandhi and his work constantly in the background. Mehta has a sensitive eye and ear. The performances are exquisitely nuanced, the look of the film is stunning but never ostentatious, the use of the water metaphor subtle and graceful. Opens Friday, November 4, at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas Deepa Mehtas movies always have something going for them. Whether its the ambition of her ideas or the richness of her imagination or the innate grittiness of her humour, individual moments in Sam & Me, Fire, Earth, and Bollywood/Hollywood stick in the mind. On the other hand, the good parts are frequently undercut by certain flaws in the execution: a weak performance butted up against a good one, silliness masquerading as farce, or sometimes just a simple lack of funding. Water, the completion of her elemental trilogy, as referred to above, is the first film in which she gets the best pieces in all the right places. The story, set 10 years before Indian independence, centres on Chuyia (played by Sarala), an eight-year-old imp sent to live in an austere ashram in Benares (now Varanasi) because the man she married died of some unnamed illness. Its a bit hard for her, and us, to understand that she is expected to spend the rest of her life in this poverty-stricken purgatory. Initially bullied by a mean-spirited alpha female (the likewise single-named Manorama), she finds better care in the hands of a more introspective woman (Seema Biswas) who comes to question the validity of some Hindu practices. And Chuyia finds an even warmer friend in Kalyani (Lisa Ray), a young beauty who, alone among the widows, is allowed to keep her long hairthe better for the local drag-queen pimp (Raghuvir Yadav) to ferry her favours across the Ganges to wealthy Brahmins who pay for the privilege. By chance, Kalyani happens to meet Narayan (U.K.-based John Abraham), a handsome, young Brahmin lawyer who champions the progressive ideas of Gandhi, much to the dismay of his friends and parents, who are on that side of the river. Although Narayan only vaguely grasps the role Kalyani is forced to play, and its connection to his higher caste, he is determined to upset the prevailing order, even if doing so has dire consequences. Once these pawns are in play, Mehtas tale advances with the inevitability of an ancient fable, albeit one with modern resonance. There are a few sticking points. Mehtas romantic leads are many shades lighter-skinned than the people around them (and the film was actually shot in Sri Lanka), suggesting that they are somehow more attractive because of that, although this perspective is certainly not unique to foreign-based Indian directors. More troubling, perhaps, is the inertness of Abrahams character, who is such a perfect fellow that it drains some drama from the conflict. It is true that the only song which sounds like the familiar ARR is Andhi Maalai. Also, how come that some of the topmost singers sing for an unknown music director for a non-film album which was never publicised well and never became famous? However, other songs like Nilavukku Pakkam - SPB, and Mudhal Muthham do sound original, and do manage to create an atmosphere of warmth. I do remember thinking that even if the album is not by ARR, keeping track of the future works of the music director of the album would be interesting. I have also heard there were other vintage ARR albums, something like 'Fantasy' and 'Set me free' and one of these was later released as 'Andhi Maalai'. Got to sit-down one day and check out the archives for more info on this. Hi, I think Ambrish is right. You can get your cassette into a CD. It doesn't take a lot of time. You can even do it at your home if you have Goldwave and a wire with 2 stereo pins. Connect the output of your player to your comp and record it. Get it burned in a cd. It is as simple as that. You can reduce the hissing noise by using noise reduction option of goldwave.
