Now that Water, earlier pseudo-named River Moon, is complete and being readied for an early release, Deepa Mehta, now stationed at her farmhouse on the outskirts of Toronto, can breathe easy. When I was stopped from shooting Water in India my dream turned into a nightmare. All sorts of insinuations were made about the film by those who hadn't even read the script and knew nothing about the film. But Water was the last of my elemental trilogy after Fire and Earth. I felt incomplete without it. I had to make Water. Last year Deepa got together a new cast. Seema Biswas replaced Shabana Azmi. John Abraham and Lisa Ray took over the roles originally earmarked for Akshay and Nandita. And the film was shot and completed in Sri Lanka. And I'm so glad I've got it out of system. Now I feel I could just retire. I'm that satisfied with Water! All those who have seen the film have told me it's my best work, though I like all three parts of my trilogy equally. But since Water is a baby that underwent a very painful gestation period I guess it will always remain my favourite. Mehta is all praise for her cast. Seema Biswas is outstanding, as usual. But it's John and Lisa who are going to stun audiences. For all those who think Lisa would be unconvincing as a Hindu widow, the film is a revelation. My script required the girl to be a lotus in a murky pond. That's exactly how Lisa comes across. As for John he has left all of us overwhelmed. When he came to Sri Lanka to shoot for Water he was fully prepared. He knew how to wear the dhoti and how to play the flute. He knew the body language and the historicity of his character…and he just transformed into the character…. The chemistry he shares with Lisa on screen has to be seen to be believed. She's so fragile and vulnerable and he's so strong and yet so sensitive. How does Deepa assess her film? It's pure and honest, not melodramatic at all, as audiences will find out when Water opens in November. For me the final seal of approval came from A. R. Rahman. When he saw the film he was completely overwhelmed. The music score that Rahman has done for Water has given the film a whole new dimension. I couldn't have made Water without Rahman…or John, Lisa and Seema. But will it be shown in India at all? I hope so, Deepa has her fingers crossed. It must be seen by Indians to know how unfair the fundamentalists were in their premature perceptions on the film's theme. The rights for the Hindi version of Water are with the NRI entrepreneur Ajay Virmani who has financed some Hindi films earlier. It's entirely up to him when he chooses to release it in India. On my part I'm just elated to have made this film. I've gone through an ordeal by fire — no pun intended — to make Water. In fact (Pakistani litterateur) Bapsi Sidhwa has written a book on the making of Water which will be published when the film is released. Mehta is delighted by the turn of events in the Hindi film industry this year. Films like Page 3, Black and My Brother Nikhil show the audiences are ready for a change. Nikhil, I believe is about a HIV positive gay man. When my Fire was released in India the fundamentalists argued that there was no lesbianism in India! About the rumour that she plans to cast Priyanka Chopra in the central role of Chhoti Malkin in an adaptation of Bimal Mitra's Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Deepa Mehta says, I've no clue where this came from. He is between the horns of a bull, as his plans are getting a set back. Two of his films are ready for Pongal release. But he is not happy because this could lead both the films into disaster. The actor wants to release his film `Paramasivan' on Pongal. This could come true, as P Vasu has already completed the film. But a new problem has struck his plans out of nowhere. Nic Arts Chakravarthi, the producer of his other film `Godfather' has emerged after absconding for quite a while due to financial problems. Now, he wants to release the film on Pongal, as it is completed. But both the films would welcome disaster if they hit the theatres on the same day. So, discussions are on regarding the matter. Rajini's 'Siivaji' - new information There seems to be a low pressure hovering over Kodambakkam. The name :'Sivaji'!. Will it turn into a storm on December 1 or January 1? While Kodambakkam is agitated over this, here is the current status of 'Sivaji' for you! New Year means just one day. Deepavali means just two days and Pongal means three days. But 'Sivaji' means celebrations for one year! This is the objective of everybody from producer to production boy. To justify that objective Shankar is reported to have built in gigantic things in his screenplay. Every stage of progress in Sivaji will burst into '1000-walla' crackers. As a first phase, they have done a huge photo session with Rajini in Mumbai. Those photos are intended to delight you. Rajini's films will usually do the Puja at the temple in A.V.M. studio. The exception was 'Chandramuki'. Though the official launch of 'Chandramuki' was done at Shivaji's house, they also did a Puja at this temple. With the partition of AVM studies between the brothers, the temple went to the share of Mr.Saravanan's brother. So, Mr. Saravanan has now built a new temple in his portion. This is where 'Sivaji' is planned to be launched. Rajini would like to appear totally 'fresh' in 'Sivaji'. That is why he has refused the offer for 'Aadhisesha' by his friend and actor Ravichandran. Not wanting to miss out A.R.Rahman's music like the way it happened for 'Anniyan', Shankar has already started discussions with him. 'Sivaji's Puja - December 1 or 5? Hi All, I was just thinking if it is possible to go back and refresh our memories and share each one's experience in listening to ARR for the first time. O Paalanhaare was sung by Sadhna along with Lata and Udit. The movie has this version. Dude, listen to it carefully..and listen to the stuff around you..does it actually fall into the same catagoryI mean just because its been sung by Daler Mehndi..spare a thought for the melody and the amount of hard work that goes into the tune. The fact that Daler Mehndi sounds so spirited on the track is a very very good indication of how good the track will be once you hear it in its full flair.Until then, even though its your right, refrain from negatives about the track! Hi Vijay, Let me make this clear. I dont know anything about ripping audio from the DVD. I dont even have the necessary hardware, such as sound card, required for decoding the audio channels. All I am doing is providing a platform for sharing the files ripped by AJ and Wasim. I have given them credit when I posted the links for download. [arr] How to extract BGMs without dialogues from DVD
I am sharing something about this topic I know. A DVD audio track in Dolby 5.1 comprises of 6 channels namely Front-Left, Center, Front-Right, Rear-Left, Rear-Right. The vocal comes only through the center channel. Using a software like DGIndex, you can extract the audio of the required sequence in AC3 format with all 6 channels intact. Now you need to downmix to MP3 format. For that BeSweet can be used. Now BeSweet has an option to control the Downmix Power Level. You can input the power level in dB for each channel separately. Now to eliminate the center channel, you can try a negative powerlevel like -50dB or something for center channel alone, while not touching the power level for other channels. Also you have other options like specifying the output bitrate. And when you click the AC3 to MP3 button what you shud get is an MP3 file with center channel eliminated. I hope that was helpful. Gopal's information, as usual, is accurate. As Sadhana is related to me, I can add more information which is in Public domain anyway. When the national awards were announced, Sadhana was declared the winner in the Female singer category for O Palanhare. This news was duly flashed by all news channels on TV. However suddenly during the late evening news bulletins, Sadhana's winning movie was changed from Lagaan to a movie in Tamil with music directed by Illiyaraja. Gopal can check the stats. (Incidently Lata Mangeshkar was Rajyasabha MP during that time.) I am not hinting anything please ! Sadhana's plight due to the adverse lobbying and intense politics in Mumbai film world has been a matter of discussions in the past. However as her close relative, I am happy that Tamil film Industry and especially our dearest BOSS, AR Rahman gave her vital chance to prove her talent and for doing that, Tamilians and AR Rahman will always remain very close to my heart ! OOPS! A typo from my part. I said 6 channels but listed only 5. The 6th channel is LFE or Low Frequency Effects which ranges from 10Hz to 120HZ and the LFE is send directly to the sub-woofer of the speaker set.
