[arr] TO Vijay Iyer - How ARR Composes tunes ???
This message is mainly to Mr Vijay Iyer and those associated with ARR closely as working team. I am keen to know as to how AR Rahman approaches any movie assignment. 1. What comes first in case of ARR, the tune or the lyrics ? 2. What does he prefer, first the tune or the lyrics ? 3. Does he keep a song bank from which the movie producer chooses some or all of his songs ? OR do the producers demand all new tunes ? 4. During actual recording, say for a duet, are 2 or more singers present at the same time or they record individually as per their lines ? 5. Does ARR use substitute singers to present the song to the main singer as a guideline ? 6. If he gets inspiration of a tune, how does he store the notations, that is, does he use a paper and pencil or directly goes to the recording equipment and records the tune on a walkman or laptop ? 6. When do the musicians ( instrument ) and chorus singers record their parts ? At any given time, how many participate in the recording process? As a keen follower and fan of ARR's art, I am keen to know the logistics of song recording ( what goes behind the scene ). So if the information requested is not a secret one, I request those close to this process with the BOSS to enlighten us. I understand that Rahman himself reads some of the messages of this group. I hope he goes through this one and answer to my questions if he can. Lukka-Chuppi (6:36 mins) - A superb guitar strumming at the beginning of the song takes you to a heavenly world...no words to describe the amazing guitar piece...on the lines of Vellai Pookal but the strumming is faster...coming to the song, this song takes you back to the golden days of hindi music as this is so beautiful in tune, composition, and singing that I wished this song would go on forever! our Boss has adopted a deep voice for this song that reminded me of Hemant Kumar's singingthe absolute best part of the song comes at a minute before the song ends where both Lata and Boss break into an alaap that should be heard to be believed...this song overtakes Boss's alaap in Yuva because for one, he is singing this with Lata, and he is simply flawless in his hindi as well as pitch and voicethis in my humble opinion is the best song of the album because of the mellifluous tune and flawless singing by botha definite classic this is... 3. Tu Bin Bataye (5:57 mins) - Madhusree is turning out to be the next nightingale!!such a sweet voice she has...a slow start to this song just melts you and sooths you... and Madhusree and Naresh Iyer take over and make this song a beautiful piece...I don't know, but somehow this song reminds me of 'Sonnalum Ketpatillai' from Kadhal Virus because of the similar mood and slow singing...whoever said this song was a rehash, better listen to this song again because they dont know what they're talking aboutSimply said, this song is beautiful in tune and singing... 4. Paathashala (3:39 mins) - Expect this song to be an absolute chartopper because this one is for the college going crowd!...superb electric guitars wake you up and gets you dancing and shows the rock side of rahman...great beat and rhythm coupled with catchy lyrics by Prasoon Joshi make this song a definite youth puller...somehow, the lyrics reminds me of Urvasi Urvasi just for that fact that they made me chuckle a couple of times...another out and out chartopper this is... 5. Paathashala (Be A Rebel) (3:09 mins) - Basically the same tune, mood and feel, except this song has some nice rap by Blaaze who has become a must for Boss in all his youthful ventures nowadays...not that anyone is complaining!...I basically have the same comments for this as the hindi version of Paathashala... 6. Roobaroo (4:43 mins) - At the start of this song, I felt awkward because of the start that Naresh Iyer gives to this song, coupled with another piece of mellifluous guitar strumming...after I heard Boss' voice, it melted my heart because of the way Boss goes rooobaaar...no words to describe my feelingsanother superb youthful track with strong melody and great singing, especially by Boss... 7. Khalbali (6:19 mins) - Alright guys, this is an absolutely new style of a composition from Boss!!The tune coupled with arabic lyrics is absolutely superbI've never heard Boss sing like this!!, just for the fact that he sings in arabic...he is given great support by Aslam who also sings superbly in arabicdon't worry, there is a small part of the song in hindi too!...but this is one song that definitely will be No.1 on the charts in

What an event it was!!! I am sure that the event would definitely lessened the 'wounds', ARR incurred, from the shabbily arranged ARR concert at Andheri sports complex. Mumbai knows its music and it was well demonstrated last night. I hope just for mumbaikars [count out the politicians and organisations like that of Smita Thackeray] ARR rethinks about his decision to not tour to mumbai again. Myself, Swapnil and Rakesh had been to Planet M together.The guest list included Prasoon Joshi -Lyricist, Rakeysh [extra 'y' now] Omprakash Mehra - director, Aamir Khan and AR Rahman. As soon as the guests wlked in the crowd went bezerk. The security guards had a tough time handling the crowd but they managed to do a good job. ARR was the first to speak.. huge cheers accompanied. When asked to hum a few lines ARR introduced Naresh Iyer to the crowd and Ru Ba Ru followed. Naresh Iyer got a great response from the crowd but when ARR started crooning the crowd went into a frenzy. I have it on a video!!! When the comperer turned towards Prasoon Joshi... no one was interested. Everyone wanted more of ARR. The chants of 'Rahman Rahman' started echoing through out. It only stopped when Prasoon said that he will be singing a song from Rang de basanti... and he did sing the title song quite well. Then it was Aamir's turn to address the crowd. Surprisingly not many were interested again. Chants of 'Rahman Rahman' started again and finally Aamir had to convince ARR to sing a number for the crowd. I guess ARR realised that he had to sing for crowd and was recollecting the words of a song in his mind... his lip movements at that time did show that he was trying to remember the lyrics of some song. What followed was 'Khalbali' and the crowd wen into a frenzy again. When ARR was done with Khalbali we started chanting 'Dil Se Dil Se'. ARR pointed out to the CD of RDB, as if to say "Guys its the music lanuch of RDB, why Dil SE" Finally Aamir got to speak only because he decided to recite 'Lalkaar' as he has done for the album. I dont know whether they were running short of time or was it because of the crowds behaviour Rakeysh Mehra never got to speak.They were rushed to the Barista at the first level and followed was a group foto session with all the stars. I managed to sneak into the second batch of people. Finally the moment of my life arrived when I met ARR. I got to shake hands with him [how I wish i dont have to wash my hands ever again] Then I sat on the chair behind which ARR was standing and we got a snap clicked. I told him more members of the yahoo group were still waiting down for their chance to meet their idol. Once we clicked the snap we were asked to push off. I just reached down when there was an announcement that all Yahoo Fan group members were being called for a foto session. Myself Swapnil and Rakesh rushed back again for that. While we were sitting the fotographer was busy shooting Aamir with a fan of his. ARR asked the fotographer to hurry up. I told him "we really dont mind the delay" after all we dont get to see him in flesh and blood every day. To that he chuckled, patted on my back and said... "well there are others waiting too.. they might miss out" Truly considerate.. We had a group snap taken and then we reluctantly walked down again. We decided that we will wait at Planet M till the time ARR was there. The stars were then finally frisked away from the back entrance. Swapnil knows Naresh Iyer well and so we got to meet him. Incidentally Naresh was invited to have dinner with ARR and group but he decided not to join them. Only if the invitation was extended to us. We would have willingly hosted the dinner too Man what a day it was.I have clicked few snaps of ARR which I will post on the group site soon. Ha ha what a joke !!! luka chuppi - horrible. ARR Lata let down big time. started nicely (like nila kaaikirathu) and the second lata opened her voice its crying.Absolutely disagree with you there This is the best song of the album !!! Elegantly composed and sung by arr. The acoustic guitar played in the entire song is absolutely mind blowing. Alaap is beautifully sung by both, Lata and ARR. What an exotic combination of guitar and tabla ! And for godsake... please stop comparing with old songs !!! This is based on my second hearing. I am honestly not biased. One thing for sure, the beat and few instrumental sound rehash, but a totall new/fresh attempt ARR. HI All This is my first mail to the group. Yesterday, I met Boss at RDB release function. He sang Khalbali without any music and still sounded quiet good. Naresh Iyer sang Rubaru with ARR. Which is his mother tongue? A person is considered as a malyali,kannadiga (whatever), based on his mother tongue, it is nothing to do with the birth place. [arr] Make take on RDB so far
Here's my take on RDB so far: Very diverse. Quite thoughtful. ARR has definitely put in the work for this soundtrack and yes, he had mass appeal in mind. However, he also excells in creativity and did not sacrifice his true artistic flair and his own stamp for this very unique soundtrack. My gems in this soundtrack so far are the RDB title song, Tu Bin, Khun Chale, Lukka Chuppi, Ek Omkar, and Roo Ba Roo. Soundtrack has a very fresh feel to it, very energetic and colorful. One of Rahman's most creative works in a long time. As far as mass appeal, a few songs will become quite popular, but as a soundtrack as a whole, I just don't see it becoming a super hit due to some abstract kind of numbers on there and other songs like Khalbli which lack immediate appeal and good melody. As a whole, the soundtrack is missing a pucca style and feel that masses love in typically super hit soundtracks. However, it will be Rahman's most commercially successful soundtrack in a while and will be a rage in some urban areas. I think the film will enhance the music appeal a lot and the sales will go higher once the film releases. All in all, I predict sales to be above avg. to hit. But, more importantly than sales in my opinion, this soundtrack is another milestone in Rahman's career and another feather in his cap. The maestro's music continues to shine brightly. This is my general impression so far. Won't go into song by song just yet. Enjoy this breath of fresh air by Rahman and some truly rocking numbers and wonderful melodies. Yahoo! [arr] Here's hoping for great commercial success for RDB
It's been way too long since a Rahman soundtrack up North has achieved great commercial success. Not since Saathiya. We can talk about how much sales don't mean much in a broader context as long as we enjoy Rahman's music, but it does matter. Based on public reactions in other forums, I am hearing mixed reactions to the soundtrack, which makes me a bit nervous. Of course, the music is still too new. The expectations were HUGE for this soundtrack and I hope that the songs are appreciated to the extent possible and that the film showcases these songs well. No doubt, if the film is a success, the music will be recognized more. I am praying and keeping my fingers crossed for Rahman's sake that the music of RDB becomes a hit. Luka Chupi - undoubtedly one of the very fine tracks of this album. I do not understand why junta continues to comment on ARR music after the very first listening. In this case, I think there is a safe exception. The track "Tu Bin Bataaye" was almost instantaeously touching. Luka Chuppi - give it just a second listening and you will be hooked. The film is to release in January 2006.The story goes like this A young woman from England named Sue comes to India to make a documentary based on her grand father's diary which was written by him (a soldier of the Raj) in 1920s and 30s about the sacrifices he and other people gave for independence. She decides to make a film on Indian revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad but when the BBC refuses her funding she recruits students from DelhiUniversity to act in the film. The film unfolds how the youth get inclined by the courage and spirit of their great revolutionary leaders.In the campus she meets different kinds of people-DJ (Aamir Khan) who passed out several years back but still wants to continue his associations with the campus because he thinks there isn't too much out there in the real world to look forward to.Karan (Siddharth), the son of an industrialist Rajnath Singhania who shares an uncomfortable relationship with his father but continues to live off him albeit very grudgingly. Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) is a middle class Muslim boy, who lives in the bylanes near Jama Masjid, poet, philosopher and guide to his friends.Sukhi (Sharman Joshi) is the innocent and vulnerable boy in the group, with a weakness for only one thing - girls.Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni), the fundamentalist in the group, the only one who still believes that politics can make the world a better place.Sonia (Soha Ali Khan), the only girl in the group tomboy and vivacious spirit, engaged to Ajay (Madhavan) - the dashing air pilot.One more important thing is that each one will be playing two characters, one, of the modern 2005 guy and another, of that in 1920s and 30s, while working in documentary.
